YORK CONSERVATION TRUST

Guy Bowyer, Chief Executive @yorkconservationtrust

York Conservation Trust are custodian of some of the most beautiful and interesting buildings in York. Founded by Dr John Bowes Morrell in 1945, he and his brother Cuthbert Morrell had been purchasing historic buildings for years previously, saving them from redevelopment, conserving and rehabilitating them. Early properties included Wealden Hall (now Chinese Laundry) and 45 Goodramgate (now La Piazza Antica), and Sir Thomas Herbert’s House.

In 1976, under the guidance of William Bowes Morrell, the property company became a charity. Today, York Conservation Trust is a nonrevolving building preservation trust. Our properties are let to commercial and residential tenants, with all rental income directly fed back into the maintenance, preservation and enhancement of our buildings.

We have three charitable objectives:

- To provide for the conservation and preservation for the public benefit of buildings of significant historic interest, architectural or constructional merit in York and North Yorkshire.

- To promote public knowledge and enjoyment of those places

- To advance education and skills in the conservation of buildings.

We are now 80 years old as a company, and in 2026 we will be celebrating 50 years as a charity.

DUTY

The Trust owns 70 historic buildings in and around York, 56 of which are listed. Having recently undertaken a full portfolio review of all the buildings in our care, and in 2024 we committed £17m to a 10-year strategic plan for their maintenance and repair, making sure all buildings are in full use, securing improved income for a sustainable future for the Trust. But we are concerned about the future of heritage buildings as a whole; alongside a busy decade of conservation activity, we will be seeking partners to support promotion of enjoyment of historic buildings and education in heritage crafts skills, to secure the continued conservation of historic buildings.

PEOPLE

In 1981, William Bowes Morrell quoted Thucydides, “for it is people and not walls that make a City”. The Trust has continued its founders’ interest and investment in heritage, education and the arts, which is driven not simply by a wish to preserve York’s history, but by a desire to improve the lives of its people. Our commitment to repairing the estate will ensure our buildings can be comfortably lived in and worked from for a long time. And we acknowledge the importance of place, and celebrate how buildings can hold valuable memories.

PLACE

Whilst many of our buildings are iconic in their own way and continue to play a key role in York life – for instance York Theatre Royal, De Grey Rooms, and Bootham Lodge – others house some of York’s best loved independent businesses and play a big part in the York street scene. Goodramgate, for example, has a strong independent vibe, and businesses like Nox, Chinese Laundry, Earworm Records, La Piazza Antica, and Lily Vine all contribute to that. When we market a commercial premises, we try not to accept offers from businesses that compete directly with existing indies in our buildings. We also love that St Anthony’s Garden on Peasholme Green is an important space to so many people, and we want to look at different ways that new visitors can enjoy the space.

MADE IN YORK, LOVED AROUND THE WORLD

Some of the most famous names in chocolate originated in York centuries ago. Today, a global confectionery brand is honouring that history and building on its legacy by continuing to produce millions of chocolates here in York - to be loved around the world. Nestlé describe how they got here, and where they’re going…

The History

You can trace our York chocolate business back to 1725 when an orphaned quaker called Mary Tuke built a small-scale cocoa factory as part of her grocery shop business. This business was then bought by Henry Isaac Rowntree in 1862. Henry’s business, Rowntree’s, was threatened with bankruptcy in 1860, and the Rowntree family sent Henry’s older brother, Joseph, to try to save the company. Joseph Rowntree suggested they improve the sweet and confectionery ranges and put the first Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles into production.

This proved successful, and by 1890 Rowntree’s had outgrown its small production sites in mills, warehouses, and above a pub in Tanner’s Moat and North Street. Over a period of 20 years, Joseph moved the business to a purposebuilt factory on Haxby Road, where the confectionery business remains to this day.

The Evolution

Rowntree’s invented some of Britain’s most famous confectionery brands, including KitKat, Aero, and Smarties. In 1969, the company merged with John Mackintosh and Co. which manufactured other iconic brands like Rolo and Quality Street. At this point, the business became Rowntree Mackintosh.

Nestlé, with its Swiss origins, has a rich chocolate making heritage of its own, through brands like Milkybar and Cailler. Nestlé acquired Rowntree Mackintosh in 1988 and has continued to invest in York ever since. It also established its global R&D centre for confectionery on Haxby Road. This centre develops new confectionery for Nestlé markets worldwide.

The Living Legacy

Nestlé has invested more than half a billion pounds in York since 1988, and, 90 years after the invention of KitKat here in the city, up to four million KitKat bars are still made on the site every day. There are around 2,000 people working for Nestlé at the York campus, from manufacturing to research and development, logistics and head office. Aero, Yorkie, and Polo are other brands that are also made on the site.

BISHOPTHORPE ROAD SCARCROFT ROAD

Just a short stroll south from York’s city walls, Bishopthorpe Roadaffectionately known as Bishy Road - is a buzzing independent high street with a community village feel. Once a quiet residential stretch, Bishy Road has blossomed into a thriving hub of independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs, all while retaining its friendly easygoing charm.

Historically, Bishopthorpe Road served as a route to the Archbishop of York’s residence in Bishopthorpe village. Today, with the adjoining Scarcroft Road, the neighbourhood is a must-visit destination in its own right. The streets are lined with characterful businesses that ooze quality and creativity; there’s great coffees and brunches at Robinson’s Cafe, Stanley & Ramona, and The Pig & Pastry: evening eats at fine dining favourite Melton’s and Sicilian speciality Trinacria; stylish, eco-friendly shopping in The Good Food Shop, Frankie & Johnny’s, and The Bishy Weigh; and relaxing drinks at Angel on the Green, 2

BISHY ROAD

Many Wines, and Jorvine round the corner on Nunnery Lane.

The lifestyles of Bishy Road’s locals and visitors are looked after by experts in hair and beauty and yoga and wellbeing. And with butchers, bakers, greengrocers, florists, opticians, shoemakers and more, the street’s independent spirit is everywhere - passionate people doing what they love, and together creating a warm and welcoming community for everyone to enjoy.

Tucked between the River Foss and the city centre, Castlegate is one of York’s quieter gems, with strong historic and current reasons to visit. Once the heart of civic life in York, Castlegate was home to the city’s law courts and the imposing York Castle, remnants of which still survive through the iconic Clifford’s Tower, a dramatic medieval fortress perched on a grassy mound, from where you can take in panoramic views of the city.

Castlegate is a place to immerse yourself in York’s history. The York Castle Museum hosts exhibits that bring Victorian streets, wartime Britain, and fashion through the ages to life. Just across the way, Fairfax House showcases Georgian splendour in a beautifully restored townhouse, giving a glimpse into the lives of York’s 18th-century elite. St Mary’s Church has transformed into a stunning art venue. And nearby, on Pavement, Herbert House is one of York’s most fascinating Tudor buildings next to the equally intriguing snicket Lady Peckett’s Yard, whilst on Coppergate the world famous Jorvik Viking Centre tells the compelling story of Vikings in York to millions of visitors.

But the neighbourhood isn’t just about looking back - it’s also a place to enjoy the present. The area is dotted with lovely places to cosy up with some tasty treats. From the traditional Castle Tea Rooms and Rustique French bistro to the contemporary Clucking Oinks chicken restaurant, York Gin, and Howl wine bar, there’s delicious food and drink for all tastes. Chocoholics can indulge at York Cocoa Works, whilst heritage and hospitality come together at Blue Boar, an 18th century pub that’s home to the ghost of notorious highwayman Dick Turpin. Steeped in history and enjoyed in comfort, this epitomises the calm and culturally rich experience of Castlegate.

For many years, Fossgate has been the hub of York’s independent scene. In the south of the city centre, the street blends centuries of history with a vibrant, modern-day buzz - where medieval buildings meet artisan coffee shops, international restaurants, and quirky boutiques.

The name means ‘street leading to the River Foss’, and the wooden bridge built during the Viking era that connects Fossgate and Walmgate continues to link the adjoining streets, both lined with an array of great independent businesses. Over the centuries, Fossgate has seen everything from cattle fairs and fish markets to the founding of Rowntree’s chocolate empire. Part of Fossgate’s history remains beautifully preserved and ready to visit at the 14th century Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.

Now, the neighbourhood has transformed into one of York’s most beloved indie quarters. Foodies can travel the world through the restaurants here - from a European tour of Spain, Italy, and Poland, to an Asian exploration of India, Japan, and Thailand. Brunch, coffees, and more can be enjoyed at unique cafes such as Black Wheat Club, Kiosk, and The Speakcheesey. And drink in the evening at a crawl of eclectic bars, from the laid back cool of Fossgate Social, through the impressive Brew York taproom, to the cosy tradition of The Blue Bell - York’s smallest pub! Fossgate and Walmgate’s positive energy emits from the shops here too, with plants, vintage clothing, tattooists, and hairdressers. The area’s bohemian community is epitomised by Spark on Piccadilly, a creative collective serving up good times from upcycled shipping containers just off the top of Fossgate. Like the street itself, it’s brimming with character, and proudly independent.

LAID BACK COOL

GILLYGATE BOOTHAM CLIFTON

Gillygate is one of York’s most underrated streets - quietly charming and home to speciality shops and authentic eateries. Running parallel to the city walls and leading onto Bootham and towards Museum Gardens, the area is surrounded by York’s history and greenery, with the nearby Minster peeking through the skyline.

ONE OF YORK’S NEW HOTSPOTS

A gentle stroll along Gillygate and Bootham takes you to several local gems for various passions; for record collectors and game enthusiasts, go to Rebound and Sore Thumb; there’s quality stationery at Snowhome and experienced experts at Gillygate Framing; Ella de Wastney and HEIMA keep Gillygate stylish with their interior design and homeware, respectively; literature lovers are satisfied on Bootham by Janette Ray booksellers and The Blue House Bookshop; and the nearby York Art Gallery adds more creative energy to the area.

The food is equally excellent here too. Cafe No.8 Bistro serves seasonal dishes in a relaxed setting with a leafy garden out back; V’s Artisan Kitchen is a wonderful new bakery mixing Yorkshire with Greece; Love Cheese absolutely lives up to its name; and more cafes and restaurants cook up fabulous flavours, including North South, Original Shawarma, and Taas. Gillygate may not shout for attention, but it rewards those who wander here.

GOODRAMGATE

Goodramgate is a street where York’s deep history meets everyday life. Nestled between Monk Bar and King’s Square, it’s one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares, with roots stretching back to Viking times. The name itself comes from ‘Guthrum’, a Norse personal name, hinting at the street’s ancient origins.

The heritage remains evident on Goodramgate. It’s home to Holy Trinity, a hidden 15th century church that feels like stepping back in time. Just around the corner, The Treasurer’s House offers a glimpse into Edwardian grandeur. The architecture here is a patchwork of centuries - medieval timber frames sit alongside Georgian facades, creating a visual timeline of York’s evolution.

Within the characterful old buildings are new shops, bars, and restaurants. From Spanish tapas at Ambiente and Italian gelato at Roberto to Syrian cuisine at Damastique and local bakes at Little Arras, there’s a culinary world to explore. Soak it all up at a modern cafe bar with a view The Habit or traditional pub with a fire The Snickleway Inn. Wherever you choose, Goodramgate offers a slice of York that’s refreshingly real.

NORTH STREET

MICKLEGATE

The name Micklegate means ‘great street’ in Old Norse - and almost a thousand years later it’s still living up to the bold description. From its origins as a ceremonial and prosperous gateway, to the thriving foodie quarter it has become today, Micklegate remains a handsome street filled with confidence and quality.

The imposing Micklegate Bar still stands guard at the top of the street, housing a museum dedicated to York’s royal history. But it’s the evolution into modern Micklegate as a haven for food, drink, and creativity which attracts locals and visitors here now. Amongst several standouts are Divine Coffee Roasters, Partisan cafe, and perhaps the most influential opening in the recent rise of Micklegate, Skosh - an award-winning restaurant blending global flavours with Yorkshire produce.

For drinks, The Falcon is an inviting pub with real ale, local charm, and a boutique inn to stay above, while Micklegate Social offers cocktails and craft beers in a suitably cool atmosphere. The street is also home to top independent shops such as Lucius Books and FortyFive Vinyl Cafe, as every doorway seems to lead to something interesting. Micklegate is a place to visit and revisit to discover the delights behind them all.

PETERGATE

LOW & HIGH COLLIERGATE

Petergate is one of York’s most picturesque streets, curving gracefully around the western edge of York Minster. The street follows the line of the old Roman road, and its name reflects its proximity to the Minsterformerly St. Peter’s Cathedral. The buildings here are a beautiful mix of Georgian and medieval architecture, with timber-framed facades and sash windows that tell tales of centuries past.

CONTRASTING STREETS

In the present century, Petergate is a modern delight, its historic buildings filled with shops, cafes, pubs, and plenty of character. Divided into High and Low Petergate, there are gems from top to bottom, and continuing onto Colliergate. You can go shopping in stylish clothing, jewellery, and art stores; make memories at LV Bridal Studio;

Credits: 1. Bennett’s, 30-32 High Petergate 2. Little Apple Bookshop, 13 High Petergate 3. Drake’s Fisheries, 97 Low Petergate

have fun in curious gift shops; get what you need from fab family hardware store Barnitts; be healthy at food store Tullivers; and purr in the unique Cat Gallery. There are many options for good food, whether you fancy fish & chips at Drake’s, small plates at 22 Yards, local fare at Forest, Portuguese cooking at Tasca Frango, or Italian favourites at La Vecchia Scuola. And enough pubs for a small crawl, between The Fat Badger, Eagle & Child, Hole in the Wall, and Three Legged Mare. Petergate delivers York’s past and present on a street that feels both grand and grounded.

SHAMBLES

York’s most famous street retains a timeless charm like no other. One of the best-preserved medieval streets anywhere, this narrow, cobbled lane is iconic - and for good reason. Stepping into the Shambles feels like walking into a storybook - whether it’s the story of its 14th century origins which are evident all around, or the books of Harry Potter, from which Diagon Alley was inspired by the Shambles.

Indeed, shops here like The Potions Cauldron and The Shop That Must Not Be Named lean into the magic magnificently - but even if you’re not a Potterhead, there’s plenty to be enchanted by. Delightful speciality shops such as Hebden Tea Company and The York Ghost Merchants offer gorgeous gifts and unique experiences, whilst the street is kept sweet by an array of exceptional treats, including macaroons at Florian Poirot, chocolate at Monk Bar Chocolatiers, desserts at The Cheesecake Guy, and ice cream at Gelato! by Ashley Smith.

There’s more great grub at Shambles Food Court, where vendors cook up global cuisines in a vibrant communal setting. And Shambles Market just around the corner is perfect for browsing local produce, crafts, and clothing from the daily stallholders. Whether you’re here for the history, the shopping, or the atmosphere, it’s a must-experience to soak up the magic of

THE PLACE TO BE

Stonegate is a major central street in York that runs from St Helen’s Square to the shadow of York Minster. Once the Roman road leading to the fortress headquarters, it’s now a bustling pedestrian street that blends heritage with high-end charm.

Lined with beautiful listed buildings which are inhabited by stylish businesses displaying jewellery, homeware, antiques, fashion… and teddy bears! The street has long been associated with printing and bookselling, and you’ll still find literary nods today, including nearby The Minster Gate Bookshop, a treasure trove of second-hand and antiquarian books.

STONEGATE

Cafes, pubs, and bars are tucked into historic nooks. The striking architecture at House of the Trembling Madness is matched inside by its distinctive decor and impressively stocked bar. And when walking along Stonegate you can’t miss Ye Olde Starre Inne, one of York’s oldest pubs, whose sign spans the street and whose cellars date back to the 17th century.

The fun continues just off the main street; at its sibling Little Stonegate, where Sotano cooks up tapas and Northern Monk bring the brews; on Lendal, where Zaap transports us to Thailand; and on Museum Street, where Brew & Brownie serve delicious daytime delights opposite the York Explore Library and Archive and the wonderful York Museum Gardens. This is a neighbourhood that rewards curiosity and celebrates beauty.

LENDAL BLAKE STREET MUSEUM STREET

SWINEGATE

Tucked just behind the Minster and branching off from the bustle of Stonegate, Swinegate is a compact but lively corner of York that’s big on personality. Despite its name hinting at its medieval past as a pig market, Swinegate today is a stylish hideaway for food, fashion, and fun.

The street’s transformation over the years has turned it into a cosmopolitan and contemporary area with a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. The architecture is a mix of old and new, with historic facades housing modern interiors and trendy businesses.

Shopping here is boutique and curated. You’ll find fashion-forward clothing, accessories, and gifts in independent stores that cater to those with an eye for style. Daytime bites don’t get much better than the neighbouring Heppni Bakeri and The Savvy Baker. In the evening, the vibes are classy and cocktaily; at Lucia, Bora Bora, or up on Kennedy’s rooftop.

Turning on to Grape Lane reveals more laid back independents serving excellent eats. Try Thai at Phranakhon, go North African at Los Moros, or order sustainable seafood and game at Fish & Forest. Swinegate may be small, but it’s full of flavour and always worth discovering.

VISION OF YORK

A message from Councillor Claire Douglas, Leader of the City of York Council on all that York has to offer.

Whether you’re a welcome visitor or a cherished resident, York has something to enjoy. From West End shows to intimate indie gigs, world heritage buildings to cutting edge contemporary media art, Michelin starred restaurants to cosy cafes, trendy bars to traditional pubs - it’s all here.

We are a modern city that preserves its past. We’re always on the move, as you’d expect from the place that pioneered the railways. Our grand C19th Railway Station is currently being refurbished, both front and back, to provide a fitting welcome whether you’re here for a holiday or on your way home from work. At the front, the Station Gateway scheme has opened up great views of the city walls, improved bus services and built new pedestrian and cycle routes, all of which should be up and running by Spring ’26.

Behind the station is one of the UK’s biggest regeneration sites - York Central. Walk or cycle along the new route through it and get a feel for its scale and size. This site is teeming with opportunity now and for generations to come with plans for investment in good jobs, a vibrant culture and genuinely affordable housing. This project has been stalled for decades so it’s fantastic to finally see progress being made.

Take a walk on our walls. They are the most complete city walls in England and a treasured inheritance from York’s long history. This year they’re also at the vanguard of a change that looks to the future. As a warming climate alters the way we plant and grow, we’ve trialled wildflower planting, just opposite the Grand Hotel, to minimise our use of water and provide visually stunning displays that are more resistant to sustained periods of dry weather.

York is the only UK UNESCO City of Media Arts. As a 2,000-year-old city we’re proud to be recognised for the work our businesses and residents do at the cutting edge of global TV, Film, Games and App productions. This is celebrated every November at the wonderful Expo, BAFTA accredited Film Festival and Fringe organised by Aesthetica, itself a globally leading contemporary arts organisation.

We excel at sport, and 2026 will see York Knights joining the Men’s Rugby Super League, where they will seek to emulate York Valkyries, who won Women’s Super League back-to-back titles in 2024. We are firmly on the sporting map and punching well above our weight with our brilliant LNER Community Sports Stadium.

We welcome more than nine million visitors each year to York. Great news for our businesses and our cultural and hospitality sectors. And we run a regular cycle of festivals, from Vikings to Early Music to celebrating food. There really is something for everyone; so whether you’re a resident or visitor, come and enjoy all York has to offer!

THANK YOU

We want to say thank you; to everybody in York that has helped us: its people, and its businesses; to the passionate individuals and the creative communities all over the city; and to everybody that has made the Book of York happen.

With support from local people sharing great things, from independent businesses looking out for each other, and from popular attractions supporting the city; large and small, from all the diverse corners of this amazing city, York has come together to create the complete city guide.

And thank you to the people of York and to the visitors here who keep coming back for more. It is all of you who make this great city what it is.
