Details of some great York businesses for you to find your favourites

I worked with Independent Life to develop this ‘Home of Independents’ cover. We decided on an organic tapestry style collage weaving together an assortment of independents, landmarks and architectural features. To bring the piece together as one flowing, seamless intertwined entity I used the city walls, rivers and bridges along with the iconic curved railway canopies.

A confident, real colour palette was used to heighten relatability and fit perfectly with Independent Life’s on the ground narrative celebrating the place and the people that make

Meet You on the Corner

Shutishuti is the delicious York patisserie by Eszter Takacs, who has opened her first shop this year at Fairfax Corner. Having gained a great reputation for her tasty bakes at Food Circle York Market, The Pig and Pastry and Kiosk, Estzer tells us all about taking the next step at her gorgeous new micro-bakery.

Fairfax Corner is a sitting room size operation. The building has historically always been a shop; in the eighties, it was a grocers, in recent history it was an eco store and community kitchen. In Victorian times, the corner building should be a public space, and the landlords are keen that this corner is used for the original intended purpose, as a community shop. That’s what Shutishuti Patisserie is.

I'm from Hungary and I grew up with the idea of the cake shop; for most people there, a normal activity on a weekend would be to go and get a lovely selection of cakes to take home for the family to enjoy. That's very much part of the culture, and I’d like to bring some of that here.

The local people have been really supportive. They saw me coming here and were waiting patiently during the renovation, crossing their fingers for me and saying “you can do it”! And once I opened, they showed up, and they continue to show up - people gathering on the street enjoying cakes, coffee and conversations. It’s important to have a good relationship with the local community.

I started out this baking journey just from true interest. I didn't train at Catering College, so am pretty much self taught. I’ve been baking for about fifteen years, starting around the time I was studying fine art in London. To support myself during my studies, I worked as a waitress at a fine dining restaurant, and I was fortunate enough to transition to a trainee pastry chef, which I absolutely loved.

While my career path hasn't been a traditional progression solely within the culinary world, as I've also been actively involved in the art scene, my baking experience continued to grow. Shutishuti began as a side project and gradually developed into a more consistent baking business after my move to York. Since then, I've had the pleasure of collaborating with Kiosk, running a pop-up shop at the Angel On The Green, and supplying cakes and tarts for Pig And Pastry. And I won Best Bakery at the 2021 Deliciously Yorkshire Taste Awards, which is ironic because I didn't have a brick and mortar shop bakery then.

Primarily I'm a cake maker and pastry chef. The ideas behind the cakes are always in the ingredients. Whilst I’m not currently at Food Circle’s market at Community Centre in Tang Hall, I still get my produce from them. The whole inspiration is the produce, and I try to always use local - for example, damsons that I foraged were used to make the jam for cakes recently.

At Shutishuti everything is made in the kitchen, and I'm the only person who bakes here. I have a barista who makes very nice coffee (from Harmony Roasters in York) and my sister Kata helps me. Independent businesses have been supportive too, particularly Steve and Julia at The Pig & Pastry. I supplied their cafe with cakes and they’ve helped me with advice on opening, even lent me equipment, which is a huge help.

Everyone says I will outgrow this place, that I will be successful and need a bigger shop. I don't know. I'm not really looking so far ahead. My short term objective is to make sure I can keep going. Do it week by week, gradually, gradually. For now, it’s for people to enjoy some well baked cake with a nice drink.

Shutishuti Patisserie

Mansion House Reopens for York Georgian Festival

Following a period of renovation, Mansion House is ready to reopen. Sarah White gives us some insight into the improvements and celebrates this historic building’s return in time to host York Georgian Festival.

The Mansion House is one of the earliest buildings built in the new fashionable ‘classical style’. Rising above what is now St Helen’s Square, the house would have been seen as a significant statement: a building of brick and stone built in a medieval city of timbered jettisoned buildings. It has influenced the development and other architectural buildings in St Helen’s Square.

The house is Grade 1 listed, marking it out as a building of important historical and architectural merit. It is also the home to a significant collection of works of art, from medieval swords to a silver chamber pot and a desiccated magical cat! All items are intrinsically linked to the history of York.

As with all historic buildings, there’s a cycle of maintenance and some more substantial repairs, as areas of the building deteriorate. The planning for works started in 2014, and a fabric condition survey was carried out in 2023. This looked at the overall condition of the house and includes: restoration of the roof structure, internal plasterwork and external windows; upgrading building services and fire measures; regulating the temperature, humidity and air conditioning; improving environmental performance and accessibility issues. Significantly, the Mansion House lift, which provides access throughout the house to wheelchair users, was no longer reliable and a new lift is now being installed. A new lift will be installed.

The works are in 2 stages, which run concurrently, with stage one completed in August whilst stage 2 runs until November. Standout parts so far include the colours - using modern research methods to analyse paint and paper fragments to establish the original 1730s colour schemes and provide a sound basis for the historical interpretation of the spaces. And the archaeological excavation in the beer cellar discovered a Roman ‘surface’, possibly a yard of road. Bits of 18th century bottles were also found, and a 1980s Boost chocolate bar wrapper!

The Mansion House will re-open in August in time for the York Georgian Festival. As the host of the festival, it’s the main events programme of the year for the Mansion House - which has been the home of events for 300 years!

By preserving this beautiful building we are able to continue to host, not just daytime visitors to explore the history, but private hires, weddings, theatre, music, cultural events, and of course… the York Georgian Festival.

It truly is a time period that the city is embracing, and the residents and visitors are the most amazing history enthusiasts, dressing in their finery all over York. We are incredibly proud to be the creator and host of this celebration, and to re-open the Mansion House in time for this festival is celebration enough for our love and respect for this magnificent building that sits rather unassumingly in the centre of our city.

mansionhouseyork.com/ yorkgeorgianfestival

Spanning 5 days from Thursday 7th to Monday 11th August, the festival covers all manor of events, from talks, dance classes, trails, fashion, promenades… and the ultimate York Georgian Ball. The festival has grown so much in its 3 years and stretches right across the City. The Mansion House hosts back to back events throughout but you will also see the Ball at the Assembly Rooms, talks at Barley Hall and Fairfax House, theatre at Merchant Taylor’s Hall, Gin Tasting with York Gin at Impossible, Mad Alice taking you around the city for exclusive Georgian gore, and so much more!

Welcome INOS!

Greek street food favourites SASA are adding to their original SPARK unit by opening a restaurant on Piccadilly called INOS. Owner Martin Tsatsas tell us all about it.

I was introduced to Greek food the traditional way, through my family, and it has been part of my life ever since. Food is an institution in our culture and everyday life; the cuisine is simple, honest, and most importantly, Greek!

Simple is sometimes misunderstood; Greek cuisine is sophisticated in its simplicity. Recipes have been elaborated for a long time using specific techniques to achieve that quality. A huge gratitude to all Greek parents and grandparents for working so hard to keep it so simple and delicious! And it’s honest because you can’t cheat with Greek food! Quality, quantity, and consistency are ingredients of every dish.

Cooking has been a passion of mine since I was young, and the idea of having a food business started when I was unhappy working long office hours; I replaced them with long, more interesting, kitchen hours! Having this plan in mind, we moved to the beautiful city of York, and me and my wife Kristina were looking constantly for a place. SPARK believed in our project back in 2020 and offered us a small unit in which we created SASA Greek Street Food. We fitted our project around the space we had at that time, and I’m proud to say it continues to be 100% the same since day one!

YORK TALKS

SASA started out of my passion for cooking, and I believe its success stands on the consistency and hard work that we have put into it. We worked as a family who wanted to bring to our customers an authentic cuisine that reminds of the bold flavours of Greece. We pride ourselves on using fresh ingredients, very good quality meat and authentic Greek products like olive oil and feta cheese.

INOS will be the same concept plus everything else that we can’t offer at SASA. We have longed to have our own space where we can accommodate our customers and offer them a full Greek experience. At INOS we have expanded our menu to include new traditional dishes, Greek wines and Greek spirits. INOS is the space where people can enjoy a relaxed lunch or dinner with friends and family and feel at home.

Any cuisine is extremely related to the nature and environment of the country it has been created. Food is an experience not only to the sense of taste, but to a combination of all the senses. This is what INOS will try to achieve: a balanced combination of activating senses through food, drinks, environment, atmosphere and service, so our customers can have a full authentic Greek hospitality experience.

WHERE TO EAT

KEEPING IT FINE

SINCE 1990

Husband and wife team Michael and Lucy Hjort celebrate 35 years since they first brought fine dining to York. Their original restaurant Melton’s is still

A Warm Welcome

We opened Melton's in 1990 with the aim to serve good food in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere - with less formality than had been associated with such food at the time. We did not want 'silver service' type dining or to be the slave to fashion that 'trendy' dining implied - and that Michael's Roux training and time in London had exposed us to. The sort of welcome, place and food we wanted as customers ourselves.

Made in York

There was never any alternative to York as it was where Michael had been born and brought up - the restaurant is named for family business Melton College on Holgate Road where he grew up. Originally it was just Michael and one or two others in the kitchen.

delighting the city’s tastebuds from their welcoming Scarcroft Road site. Lucy tells us the story of how Melton’s have been keeping it fine since 1990.

Critical Acclaim

We quickly received notice from The Good Food Guide, Michelin Guide and various national press (remember, this was all before the internet review phenomenon) and grew our customer base steadily. We still see some of the customers who came the night we opened!

A Food Evolution

Over our 35 years we have evolved. Changes in kitchen equipment, such as pacojets & thermomixers and temperature controlled water baths, have encouraged food style development. The rise of the TV Chef, of Masterchef programmes, and of Tasting Menus, has normalised a more sophisticated presentation to a more discerning customer base. Under our Head Chef Calvin Miller our menu provides this in both a Tasting Menu and a Short Menu format.

Wine!

My wine list has also grown, from a modest 30 wines to now over 170. I have something for every palate and pride myself on matching dishes and wines.

A Special Celebration

Celebrating our anniversary on June 6th, we are bringing back our much loved Raspberry Souffleon the menu when we first opened! And we will be revisiting some of our favorite dishes - with Calvin's modern twist - over the next year.

Hundreds of artists are represented in our collection, with works dating from the start of the British studio pottery movement at the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. The objects themselves range from functional to sculptural and domestic to monumental, alongside installations and commissions.

'Not a Pot' will explore the collection using the inspiration, ideas, intentions and impact of Gordon Baldwin (1932-2025), one of the UK’s most important and influential ceramic artists. Through diverse themes such as Surrealism, landscapes and the human figure, we discover how artists use clay to respond to the world creatively.

Current exhibition: Harland Miller: XXX

Until 31st August, this exhibition of York-born internationally-acclaimed artist and writer Harland Miller is bright, colourful and appeals to all ages.

The exhibition showcases paintings and works on paper from his renowned ‘Letter Paintings’ series. The themes extend beyond the indoor gallery spaces and into York Museum Gardens, through a creative interpretation of Miller’s vibrant ‘Far Out’ diptych using a selection of flowering plants. Visible from the ground and the gallery’s balcony, the plantings have been sown on two wired raised planting beds on the sloping grass verge behind the Gallery which leads up to the wildflower meadow. This floral installation has been planned so flowers appear from the end of June, peaking during the summer season.

This exhibition has been supported by White Cube.

Yorkshire Museum

New major exhibition: Viking North

Opens 11th July

Filled with magnificent objects, many unseen for generations, this incredible collection from 11th July will tell the story of the Viking Age in the North of England from around 865 to 1066. Underpinned by new archaeological research and cutting-edge technology, the exhibition combines objects from the Yorkshire Museum’s own collection and specially loaned items including artefacts from the Bedale Hoard, not seen since 2017, the Vale of York Hoard and the Viking Army Camp at Aldwark in North Yorkshire, among other key national loans. This combination of artefacts, shown together for the first time, reflect the north as the power base for the Vikings. Many of these items in gold and silver are of high value and prestige – our version of ‘bling’ - that deemed to show the power, wealth and skills of the Viking people who lived in Yorkshire and the wider north of England in what is now the NorthWestern counties, the Midlands, Lincolnshire and East Anglia. Displayed with added atmosphere alongside the internal ruins of the Abbey at Museum Gardens on which the Yorkshire Museum is built, the world class objects on display include:

The York Helmet - the renowned The York Helmet found in Coppergate in York

The Ormside Bowl - a silver-gilt bowl found with sword in a Viking burial in Cumbria

The Bedale Hoard - an extraordinary collection of precious items many proving international connections

AGAINST THE GRAIN

Philip and Nelly Trevelyan have owned Hill Top Farm for 50 years, launching Yorkshire Organic Millers 20 years ago to grow organic wheat and rye from the North Yorkshire site. In 2023 Rob Archer

and Maygan Brown took over management of Yorkshire Organic Millers and Hilltop Farm. Rob gives us some insight to life on the farm creating their sustainable high quality flour.

Milling was new to us, but through great teaching from Philip and Nelly we learnt fast about the whole milling process - maintaining the mills and managing the grains and grists to produce the best quality flour consistently. Keeping the mill running has been an eye opener into the amount there is to do behind the scenes, from organising grain with farmers to making sure the orders arrive safely on time. This - alongside running the 120 acre farm with organic sheep, chicks and beef cattle - has been a huge honour and very rewarding.

Yorkshire Organic Millers is currently producing 350 tonnes of flour a year, which can feed 18,000 people. The current setup is four stone ground mills with the hardest granite stones which were designed and imported from a French mill producer. Three of the mills run our 85% bread flour daily, and the other mill is swapped between rye and wholemeal as needed.

We’re currently looking into the possibilities of growing the brand. Since taking over we’ve made minor improvements to the mills, enabling us to produce 20% more flour without losing quality.

We’ve also been looking at various other flour types which one day we’d be keen to produce - having already started producing plain flour which has been a hit with some artisan bakers and bakers from homes. One of my future goals is to set up a micro bakery on the farm to supply locals with fresh bread daily.

TIM SELLERS FROM CARR HOUSEFARMINDRIFFIELD

priority is to ensure our flour is the best quality we can supply and to keep the local and stone ground heritage that Yorkshire Organic Millers is known for. We’re keen to keep our flour sustainable, so from grower to consumer everyone is able to afford the produce. We have a good relationship with the local farmers who supply us with grain, ensuring they receive the best possible price and future crops can be planted: Tim Sellers from Carr House Farm; John Gibson at Gillamoor, who we buy our rye grain from; Alex Fraser from Fraser Farms, who is a knowledgeable young organic farmer; Stringers and Sons at Bishop Wilton; Neil Wilson from Woodlands Farm, whose land produces consistent quality grain with high protein, which is key to our bread flour production. The varieties of grain we currently mill are Mulika, Nelson, Paragon and Oland, along with Rye.

We supply flour to many bakers across Yorkshire and the UK - from some of the best artisan bakers to micro bakeries who all produce amazing breads, pastries, pastas, pizzas and more. Phil at Haxby Bakehouse has been a loyal customer and highly skilled baker from the day Yorkshire Organic Millers were born, winning international awards for his Yorkshire mill sourdough. We also supply Wild Hearth Bakery at Crieff who has won national awards for his bread. Other great local bakeries we supply are Bluebirds Bakery in York and Malton, The Handmade Bakery in Slaithwaite, and Stark Farm, who use traditional wood fuelled ovens.

All Along the Yorkshire Riviera

All along the eastern edge of Yorkshire is a glorious coastline spanning approximately 100 miles. From the southern Spurn Point to Redcar in the north, there are several stunning spots to stop at, see, and stay. We took a tour of the coastal towns and seaside resorts to discover the beautiful nature and brilliant businesses creating unique experiences all along the Yorkshire Riviera.

Bridlington, Flamborough Head, and Bempton Cliffs

Moving on up from the attractive East Riding resorts of Withernsea and Hornsea, we land in the archetypal East Coast town of Bridlington. This famous old resort has traditionally been a popular getaway for family fun and later life relaxation, with the extensive, sandy South Beach overlooking Bridlington Bay, offering beautiful views of the harbour. Attractions here include Bridlington Spa, which hosts several shows and events, and Bridlington Old Town, where historic buildings have been revived by some fine new independents.

Just a few miles from Brid, to the eastern point of the Yorkshire Coast, is a wondrous piece of nature. Flamborough Head is a remarkable promontory which has been designated a Special Area of Conservation. The picturesque white cliffs are topped by two standing lighthouse towers, dating back centuries, with beautiful bays beneath. For a magical experience nearby, Bempton Cliffs are a must-visit; a magnificent nature reserve where hundreds of thousands of seabirds settle in the crags during Spring and Summer. Enjoy a spectacular clifftop walk whilst taking in the joyous spectacle of puffins and other wonderful wildlife.

Filey, Cayton Bay, and Scarborough

Filey is a local seaside town that grew from a small fishing village into a popular tourist resort in between Bridlington and Scarborough. Filey offers a more serene environment without losing any seaside amenities; indeed, everyone’s favourite seaside staple, fish and chips, is served traditionally and deliciously at timeless delights Dickie Bees and CJ’s. Along the road, Maynards will provide your dessert with a great selection of old-skool sweets. And during the day, Filey’s long stretch of golden sand provides one of the best beaches on the Yorkshire Coast.

An equally impressive beach is found a little further up the coast at Cayton Bay. Here, the wide sweeping bay is complemented by a clear and waving North Sea, attracting surfers all year round for its consistent conditions. Whether you’re here for the surf or the sun, there’s the chance to relax at beachfront cafe Salty Dog, take in some culture at Scarborough Fair Collection and Museum, and treat yourself to an elegant meal and maybe even a luxurious stay at The Farrier.

Next, we arrive at perhaps Yorkshire’s most famous coastal town: Scarborough’s iconic seafront conjures visions of a romantic past, and behind the sweeping bays and grand hotels, its present remains full of life. In amongst the vibrant south bay amusements are the fabulous fish shop Lifeboat and seafood supremo Lookout on the Pier. Up on the scenic north bay, you can visit the tranquil Peasholm Park and see live music at Scarborough Open Air Theatre. And back in the centre, drink great coffee at Koda, sup craft beer at Craft, and watch the best Yorkshire culture at St Joseph’s Theatre.

Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby, and Sandsend

The north east coast reveals a trio of delightful Yorkshire towns. Robin Hood’s Bay, nestled between Scarborough and Whitby, is a picture-postcard gem. Winding down to the bay and through cobbled streets passes cute cafes, small shops and cosy pubs, including Tea, Toast and Post, Berties of Bay, and Smugglers Ale House respectively. No trip to this fishing village is complete without a walk on the idyllic beach, where you can discover fossils and explore rock pools.

There are even more beauty spots to continue on to; from the pretty village of Sandsend, where Fish Cottage serves delicious seafood and Saltmoore provides a gorgeous wellness spa hotel; to the sandy shoreline of Runswick Bay, the charming fishing village of Staithes, and the surf and sun of Saltburn-by-the-sea. And that’s exactly where to enjoy your Summer: by the sea, all along the Yorkshire Riviera.

On to many people’s favourite piece of the Yorkshire Coast: Whitby. This unique and evocative town is filled with historic charm and modern delights. The distinctive skyline looks out to Whitby Abbey, a 7th-century Christian monastery which influenced Bram Stoker’s Dracula - it’s no wonder Whitby is home to the world’s largest Goth Weekend. To get here, climb the 199 steps and reward yourself with a clifftop beer at Whitby Brewery. Elsewhere, food is plentiful; there’s breakfast at The Singing Kettle and lunch at Angel Fisheries or dinner at The Magpie. And it’d be rude to leave without Whitby Jet, the local gemstone found in many independent jewellery shops here.

Putting Independents on the Map

At Independent Life, we believe in working harmoniously with like-minded people to make a positive impact on our city; complementing one another, united in supporting local independents. Indie York has been championing independent businesses in the city centre for almost a decade, and last year they expanded further to cover the whole of York. Alice Bentley tells us their story and maps out some of the many great areas to explore York’s indie scene.

A Small Passionate Movement

Indie York began in 2016, following the Boxing Day floods of 2015, which hit loads of local businesses really hard. A bunch of independent traders came together with a simple goal: support each other and make sure the city's amazing independent scene not only survived but thrived. We're a not-for-profit - meaning everything we do is for the benefit of our members. What began as a small, passionate movement has grown into something pretty special.

Authentic Taste of York

At its heart, Indie York is about shouting loud and proud about all the brilliant independent businesses that make York such a unique place. Whether it’s a quirky gift shop, a cosy coffee spot, a boutique salon or a local artist’s gallery – we help people discover the gems they might not find otherwise. It’s ideal for locals wanting to support small businesses, and for visitors who want a proper, authentic taste of York.

A Real Support Network

Indie York isn’t just about promotion, it’s also about community. We're run by volunteers who all own and run their independent business. Behind the scenes, we’re a real support network for local business owners. We swap advice, collaborate on projects, and offer each other a listening ear during the trickier times. There's a real sense of camaraderie - people look out for one another, and that’s something we’re genuinely proud of.

Good For The City

The impact of a strong independent scene is huge; it keeps money flowing through the local economy, helps small business owners thrive, and preserves that one-of-a-kind feel that big chain stores just can’t replicate. It’s good for the city, good for the community, and frankly, it makes York a way more interesting place to live and visit.

Stronger Than Ever

York’s always had a strong sense of supporting independent business, but it’s really stepped up in recent years. These days, around two-thirds of the city’s businesses are independently owned - which is pretty impressive. More and more people are realising the magic of shopping local, eating local, and supporting local talent. There’s real pride in York’s independent culture –and with Indie York spreading across the whole city, we want to make sure that spirit’s stronger than ever.

More Than 270 Local Independents

Indie York create an amazing directory and a beautifully designed map that’s packed with more than 270 local independents - from the heart of the city to the buzzing suburbs and surrounding villages. You can grab a printed version dotted around the city, or check it out online. Here’s a taste of what’s out there:

City Centre Streets…

The Shambles & Shambles Market: Yes, it’s iconic –but its full of indie treasures. From handmade crafts to tasty street food, it’s a must-visit.

Beyond The City Centre...

Haxby: A thriving high street with that proper village feel – full of lovely local shops, salons, cafés and community favourites.

Fulford: A peaceful spot with a growing collection of independents, including cafés, creative studios, and wellness spaces.

Strensall: Friendly and full of character. From local food shops to unique little stores, it’s a brilliant place to explore.

Acomb: A strong community spirit and an exciting independent scene – expect local cafés, makers, and businesses doing brilliant things.

Clifton Moor: Known for retail parks, yes - but it’s also home to some fantastic independents doing things differently. Whether it’s fitness, food, or creative services, there are local businesses here worth shouting about!

VE Reflections:

York from Wartime to Present time

Following this year’s 80th anniversary of VE Day on the 8th May 2025, we took a look back at York in 1945. With thanks to Buff Reid for permission to use these photographs, here are some evocative visions of York at wartime alongside York at peace.

A Beautiful Thing

There’s a very particular uncontrollable joy when a terrace erupts into bouncing pandemonium at a goal. There is, I swear, an almost inconceivably brief but absolute silence as a goal-bound shot crosses the line. Then everything is subsumed into a collective and spontaneous chaos of noise and limbs.

A beautiful thing.

York City Football Club was founded over 100 years ago in 1922. After 88 years at home ground Bootham Crescent, the club moved to the York Community Stadium in 2021. The 202425 season ended without promotion back to the football league, but its success both on and off the pitch has created optimism for the future. Head of Operations Adam Crowle reflects on last season, looks forward to next, and describes the importance of the football club’s connection with the people of York.

Rebuilding Foundations

Having survived relegation from the National League on the final day of the 23/24 season, 24/25 was about rebuilding foundations to be more of a success on the pitch. Early season form and results soon found the team at the higher remits of the table, with the new look squad producing some great performances. This success saw the attendances growing at the LNER Community Stadium, and also for away fixtures where our fans were travelling far and wide to back the boys each week. Adam Hinshelwood as manager created a strong bond with the supporters and the results were being shown. Promotion wasn't expected at the start of the season, but it soon became apparent it was achievable. Finishing in the play-off positions was a massive success in comparison to the previous season, and even though promotion wasn't quite achieved, the club’s growth plan was ahead of schedule.

Create Memories

Since moving to the LNER Community Stadium, York City has already been able to create memories; all football clubs generate moments throughout their history, so being able to do this at the new stadium is vital for engaging generations of fans who won't remember the club's time at Bootham Cresent. Moving further away from the centre could have lost the closeness to the city, however over recent years it's evident the fans are beginning to really enhance the new stadium. This was proven during the 24/25 season, where the average home attendance was over 6000, and looking ahead to 25/26, already over 3300 season tickets holders are backing the team for that promotion push back into the English Football League (EFL).

Fully Rounded Experience

Matchdays are what every football fan looks forward to, and that isn't any different here. We try to ensure that matchdays are not just centred around watching the game, but also enabling all those attending to enjoy a fully rounded experience. Being based to the north of the city at Monks Cross, it’s key for fans to have plenty of parking options, at the retail park or the Park and Ride with YCFC matchday buses (X22). Prior to kick-off, the club hosts face painters, stalls and kickabouts outside the stadium for the whole family to enjoy, and a fan stage with live music in the concourse for those seated in the South or East stands. Being based at the LNER Community Stadium has also allowed the club to increase hospitality for up to 420 supporters. All of these areas were a huge success in 24/25 and are set to be full again for 25/26.

Tony Cole @yorktone

As a club, the importance of being attached to its fanbase is massive, and being able to grow that fanbase for the future is required. The club's owner Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla are constantly striving to enhance the fan experience and connect as much as possible. York as a city only has one professional football team, so having the backing of those locals, whether or not they attend fixtures regularly, is amazing. Throughout the course of the 25/26 season and beyond, the club will be looking to setup more fanbase incentives and initiatives to spread across the city.

Tony Cole @yorktone

A Community Club

Financially the day to day running of a football club is tough, and it's imperative the club becomes sustainable to carry on the upward curve of success. This will include the development of a new performance and business strategy that will be designed and implemented in the coming months now that the club is in a position to do so. Moving forward, the aim is to return York City to the EFL, but also to create a community club that services the city.
