Kerke stap en bid vir vrede

p Sondag 26 Maart was Atlantis in rep en roer toe kerk-lede in hulle hordes die strate ingevaar het om te bid vir bende-geweld, armoede en dwelms in ons dorp. Verkeer in die strate was tot stilstand gedwing deur die massiewe groepe mense wat deur Grosvenor Laan, Carl Uys Rylaan, Meermin straat en Gardenia Straat beweeg het. Volgens die koördineerder pastoor Sydney Jacobs was die poging tot `n reuse sukses. “Dit is die eerste keer dat daar so baie kerke saam betrokke was.” `n Reeks opelug-dienste het begin op Sondag 26 Maart en eindig op Sondag 2 April op die perseel langs Seven Eleven in Avondale. Die gasspreker is Evangelis Edward Ackerman.

Nader aan die huis sit ons byvoorbeeld met die Kanonkop behuisingsprojek wat na soveel maande nog steeds stil staan. Dit terwyl mense in hulle hordes geforseer word om in agterplase en opslaanhuisies te woon. `n Ander dreigende krisis is die toename in bendegeweld in ons skole en ons dorpe in die algemeen. Klaarblyklik het niemand `n teenvoeter vir die euwel nie.

Ons het drasties ingryping nodig.

Gebed, optogte, gespreks-forums, samewerking, strategiese en kreatiewe oplossings, out of the box thinking.

Welliswaar al die bogenoemde. Maar wat ons ookal doen - die tyd om dit te doen is nou en hier!

Koppe bymekaar gesit oor bendegeweld en vandalisme in skole

Jesse Stevens was just seven-years-old when he was fatally killed on 30 July 2016 by a youngster on a quad-bike, allegedly riding on a public pavement in Nottingham Street, Sherwood Park, Atlantis. The homicide case has been dragging and no one has been charged over the case even though the suspect is known to the public and investigators. Jesse`s father, Grant Stevens, has been following up with the local police station in Atlantis only to be told each time that the docket was at the provincial detective monitoring office. “I go to the Atlantis police station every week and every time investigation officers say the docket is at their

Wat my nog meer opgewonde maak is die feit dat die torings gebou en gestuur word na my geboorteplek, Loeriesfontein, waar hulle opgerig word.

Die ingineur, werkstasie-bestuurders en inligtingsbeampte en die fabriek met sy fantastiese masjiene het my beïndruk. Maar hulle vriendelikheid en gasvryheid het die kersie op die wors rolletjie en sagte drankie geplaas.

Kanonkop ‘still quiet’ despite increasing housing backlog...

No basic services for Pella squatters A PETER LUHANGA fter illegally invading land owned by the Moravian Church in Pella, a group of former back-yard dwellers are now forced to relieve themselves in nearby bushes, and living without water supply.

PETER LUHANGA onstruction of the remaining 160 residential units at the Kanonkop housing project remain suspended since December 2015. No time frame has been set for the completion of the remaining state subsidised houses, at Kanonkop, Atlantis. 13 of these units are severely vandalised.

The City`s Mayco member for Transport and Urban Development, Brett Herron, said the total budget for the project is R60 million, of which R36 million was spent on the completed 294 units handed over to beneficiaries. The remaining R24 million would be spent on the remaining 161 units, which includes the 13 vandalised units.

At the beginning of this year - at the first sub-council 1 seating - the lack of progress on low-cost housing projects in the Atlantis area, prompted councilors of different political affiliations to demand a progress report from the City of Cape Town. Subcouncil chairperson, Cynthia Clayton, said that low-cost housing projects in Atlantis was in the Intensive Care Unit. On Thursday, 23 March, Clayton said she had received a progress report from the City’s Transport and Urban Development Directorate and she was satisfied with it. On the Kanonkop Phase 1 housing project, Herron said the contractor has not resumed work as yet as the City needed to first negotiate the terms of the contract. “The contractor needed to renegotiate terms with their suppliers and subcontractors first before they could commit to anything with the City.

Authority to extend the contract has not yet been granted pending the City’s internal processes currently underway, said Herron. He said the City has applied to the Department of Human Settlements for additional funding to cover the cost of fixing

the vandalised houses. They will only be able to announce the details of the contractor once all supply chain management processes have been concluded and the contractor was ready to commence work. At the sub-council’s March 2017 meeting, DA proportional representative (PR) councilor, Gregchan Barnardo, submitted a motion on the Kanonkop housing project. He proposed that the Department of Human Settlements “does everything within its power to ensure that the Kanonkop project commence and be managed, and that all relevant parties provide monthly progress reports.”

Clayton said her sub council was also currently conducting an audit of all privately owned vacant land in the area. “We want the City to buy the land so our people can buy serviced plots to build their own houses. We have lots of people that earn above R3500. We want to return the young working class to Atlantis, they don’t have to move out of Atlantis to buy plots and houses elsewhere,” she said.

She also said there was 100 low cost houses planned to be built in Witsand, which will be allocated to Atlantis residents who have been on the City`s housing database “We want integration with Witsand,” she said.

About 40 families who were previously living in backyards, invaded the land at the beginning of February, saying that overcrowding in their families` homes and backyards is the main reason why they were forced to illegally occupy the land. They clashed with the City’s law enforcement agencies who demolished the newly erected shacks. Soon after demolishing their homes, the residents re erected their shacks and opened a case of assault against the City’s Law Enforcement officials. They are now demanding that the City of Cape Town make the squatter camp habitable with the provision of basic services.

When visiting the site on Sunday, 19 March 2017, IMPACT NEWS counted 40 shacks.

Sidney Arends, 31, (pictured above) said authorities did not return to destroy their shacks after the initial show-down early in February. “The land was vacant so we can stay here. We feel alright here. I got my open space and my own shack. The only problem is water and toilets. We relieve ourselves in the bushes and we need the City to provide us basic services,” said Arends. Dillion Petersen, 23, said he was also excited to leave his mothers overcrowded home and live on his own at the squatter camp. “We are not going anywhere. We are here to stay,” said Petersen. About the Koeberg Public Safety Information Forum

Section 26(4) of the NNR Act states that “The holder of a nuclear installation license must establish a public safety information forum as prescribed in order to inform the persons living in the municipal area in respect of which an emergency plan has been established on nuclear safety and radiation safety matters.”

What is the Public Safety Information Forum (PSIF)?

The PSIF is a meeting which takes place four times a year. It is used as a platform for residents within the municipal boundary of Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to enquire about and receive nuclear safety related information from the facility.

Which topics are discussed?

The forum will address any topic that the members feel could impact their health, environment, and safety from a nuclear emergency preparedness point of view.

Who should attend?

All persons living within the municipal area around Koeberg, all affected and interested organisations or parties, and any other persons concerned about their health and safety from a nuclear and radiation safety point of view are welcome to attend the forum. Illegal dumping major eye-sore in Atlantis ROXXANNE PRETORIUS llegal dumping has become one of The City of Cape Town’s biggest challenges, with hundreds of millions being diverted to address the problem annually. At the beginning of March the City launched a clean-up campaign at the Atlantis City Mall CBD area to help assist in keeping Atlantis decent and squeaky clean. Councillors Cynthia Clayton, Greg Bernardo along with the Expanded Works Public Program (EPWP) and community members came together to get their hands dirty.

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness. It is our responsibility to keep our community clean. We should teach our children not to litter and set an example for them to follow”, said Councillor Clayton.

Due to the cost of clearing dumped material and the seeming reluctance of perpetrators to make use of the City’s designated drop-off facilities, it has

become evident that the City should try a new strategy. In addition to the cleanup campaign residents should also note that individuals guilty of making use of their vehicles for illegal dumping, those vehicles will be impounded and seized.

You will also need to pay a tariff for its release, which will increase after each impoundment and offence. If you’re found guilty of illegal dumping you’ll pay R7000.00, and it will have doubled by your third offence.

“This new legislation also offers much greater scope for affected communities to assist in identifying and punishing offenders. We encourage all those who witness these crimes to take photographs of the incident to assist us in our investigation. If the vehicle registration is included, this could help to ensure that the perpetrators are suitably punished”, said Alderman Smith. Illegal dumping can be reported to the City on 021 596 1999.

Biblioteek-week `n groot sukses Free vehicle checks before D Easter ROXXANNE PRETORIUS ie Biblioteek- en Inligtingsvereniging van Suid-Afrika (LIASA) het vroeër vandeesmaand (18 tot 24 Maart) Suid-Afrikaanse Biblioteek gevier, met die inspirerende tema, ‘my biblioteek, jou biblioteek’.

Hierdie tema het ten doel om biblioteke nader aan gemeenskappe te neem, mense te motiveer om meer te lees en die rol wat biblioteke speel in die gemeenskap weer te laat posvat. Hulle doen daarom ‘n beroep op mense om meer betrokke te raak by projekte by hul plaaslike biblioteke.

Wesfleur Biblioteek het ‘n vol program vir Biblioteekweek gehad wat op Maandag 18 Maart afgeskop het, met onder meer storieen speeltyd vir kleuters, brand en veiligheids praatjies vir senior burgers en ‘n tiener uitreik-program. Die hoogtepunt vir meeste was egter die domino-kompetisie, met

Mother’s Day fundraiser exceed all expectations

ROXXANNE PRETORIUS n 25 February MK1 Lifestyle car club held a mother’s day fundraiser in the parking area behind Silverstream Hotel, selling boerewors rolls. They sold a whopping 550 rolls, raising more than R8000.00 in the process. “The community`s support was extremely good on the day and we didn’t expect it. A huge thanks to our fellow car clubs including, Mamre Petrol Heads, Audi Power and Team Dapper X, The City of Cape Town and Councillor Cynthia Clayton, as well as Gordon Panels”, said Ricardo Skippers, Chairperson of MK1 Lifestyle.

Although the intended mothers haven’t been chosen yet, they definitely plan on including all moms from old age homes in Atlantis. The club deliberately started early on in the year so they can be pre-order and purchase gifts that is both functional and will serve as a reminder to mothers of how special they are.

Kerria Primary opens its ‘doors to knowledge’

T

he Strebel family influence in Atlantis can almost be traced back to when the town first started taking shape.

The late John Strebel opened a hat manufacturing company in Atlantis a few decades ago and since then Atlantis has always been close to the hearts of the family. The family clearly has a passion for education, having first invested in the John Strebel Educare centre many years ago. The need for a functioning school library was prioritised and in 2016 steps were taken towards bringing this vision to fruition.

Courtney Hugo was employed to be the full-

time library assistant and started training immediately. One of the people who shared a few ideas and familiarised Hugo with the functioning of a library was André Davids, librarian at the Avondale Public Library. “As the wind came up this morning I thought of it symbolising the winds of change blowing through our school. I’d like to thank our stakeholders and sponsors from the Strebel Foundation Trust for helping us towards achieving our vision for learners to gain knowledge,” said Andrews. “It is a very generous gesture to name the library the Strebel Library and we are honoured and blessed by it”, said Dr. Strebel when

addressing the crowd. “I celebrated a big birthday recently. I won’t say how old I am, but a friend suggested I buy as many books as the amount of years I celebrated and donate it to the school library, which I did. My family no longer gets Christmas gifts either, instead they get a picture of the front cover of a book donated to the Kerria school library on their behalf,” Dr. Strebel joked.

Learners at the school will now more fittingly be able to live up to the school`s motto, Scientia Liberatas, Latin for knowledge brings freedom.

Talented Atlantis duo shares stage with Billy Ocean

NICOLE GREEF the Music, also known as 4TM, is an idea that started 11 years ago in Dubai, formed initially with 2 members namely Peter-John Frans and Jabu Magagula.

A year and a half later Elton Frans, brother to Peter-John, joined the group and has been part of the band ever since, flying the flag high for Atlantis in the UAE. Their journey started at Madinat Jumeirah, a prestigious 5 Star hotel at the center of many activities of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Word soon spread about this vibrant band with their eclectic sound. Their ever-growing popularity would later have them performing at renowned venues in Doha, Qatar and Bahrain. These days they find themselves back in Dubai, where they perform to packed audiences at the laidback Bahri Bar. They also headline at corporate events and have been a resident act at the annual Taste of Dubai food festival since 2008 and now started performing at the Taste of Abu Dhabi. At

these events 4TM has been the opening act for artist such as The Wailers, BoneyM, and Bjorn Again.

On the 9th of March, they had the very exciting opportunity to open for multi-platinum 80`s pop sensation, Billy Ocean. Born in Trinidad, the Grammy award winning singer/ songwriter, made a name with hits such as Lover Boy and Caribbean Queen. Many of his singles took the number one spot worldwide on pop charts in many countries, making him the United Kingdom’s biggest black artist ever.

n Friday 17 February the learners and staff at Wesfleur Primary school held a modeling show with a difference.

The theme was “reduce, reuse and recycle for love” where grade 7 learners worked in groups to create an outfit made completely of recycled materials. “The idea was to provide creative and alternative solutions to reducing the pollution in our area. Our teachers also got involved, sporting some recycled fashion of our own. The end result was overwhelming; simply seeing all the creativity and effort that went into the outfits. Even the judges felt like they should have awarded every outfit based on each unique design. The learners, teachers and the audience had a blast”, explained teacher and event organiser, JamieLee Titus, (pictured right with two learners at the school).

W

hen Tashwell Adams matriculated from Saxonsea High in 2007, he had no prospects to study further at a tertiary level.

So he took it upon himself to start coaching in the Atlantis district and mould his own future. In 2008 his professional journey started at Saxonsea Primary and from there his career ascended into greatness in all sport codes, especially in athletics.

Now Tashwell is the assistant coach at Robinvale High in all sport codes, chairperson of Velocity Athletics Club, sprint Coach and Academy Coordinator at Durbanville High, coaches an exercise group at Van Riebeeck High in Melkbosstrand and also assist various other schools in Atlantis.

After being a part of the coaching sport scene for 10 years, Adams is finally getting recognised for his contribution in his field. On 1 March the Cape Town Sport Council Awards took place at Cape Town Civic Centre, where he got nominated for Coach of the Year 2016, alongside Suzaan Ferreira and Marcel Otto. The winner will be announced in June this year. “Just to be nominated alongside these coaches is a huge privilege. I’ve only been in the industry for 10 years and I thank the Lord for making all of this possible. It is great to be recognised and acknowledged in my field because athletics isn’t as big as other sports codes in South Africa.

I humbly thank all my mentors, athletes I’ve worked with, Velocity and all schools in Atlantis for guiding and accompanying me on this journey”, said Adams.

ROXXANNE PRETORIUS t’s only the third month of the year, but the Avondale Majorettes has already competed in two different Western Province Majorettes & Cheerleading Association (WPMCA) competitions.

The first competition took place on the 25th of February at JG Meiring school grounds in Goodwood and they walked away with the 5th best group prize overall. Avondale was also the only team who competed on a junior, senior and tertiary level, making history at the WPMCA as the first team to compete on all three levels in one competition.

Hottentots Holland High School in Somerset West was the venue of the second contest on the 4th of March.

Avondale competed against Brackenfell, Curro Junior, Dr. Van Der Ross, Groote Schuur, Helderkruin and Leiden Avenue Primary schools and they achieved overall 4th place, also ranking in 3rd place for both the Squad and Display rounds, 6th Best Leader and fourth Sub-Leaders.

“We are so proud of our girls with their amazing achievements. Our next competition will take place on 22 April 2017 at Brackenfell High School. We would love to have some support from our community, as we are the only team from Atlantis. Gate entry for adults is only R20 and children R10,” said head-coach, Kaylene Cordom.

n Saturday 4 March Atlantis, Mitchells Plain, Kraaifontein and many more car enthusiasts turned up to attend and compete in the first Turn Up Car Show, hosted by West Coast Events (WCE) at the Dollies Centre in Atlantis.

Engines were revving, sound boxes booming and tyres burnt and performances provided by local acts like Frankie Souldeep and others kept the crowd entertained.

Car clubs like Dapper X, Audi Atlantis, Honda Prime, Mk1 Lifestyle and Bassnatics challenged each other in the ‘Show and Shine’and ‘Sound Off’ competitions. West Coast Events decided to have a special award called the “Umer Dollie Award” to reward a club that has done “good” in the community.

The car clubs submitted the work they’ve done in the community and based on the number of people they reach, how involved they are in and how they have given back, the winner was chosen. Tevin Syce, Founder of team Dapper X, definitely stole the show in the Show & Shine section. “For me personally I feel winning the trophies was unexpected, I didn’t go with the intention of winning. Being awarded the ‘Second Best Overall’ was great and I dedicate all the trophies to my Team members”, said Syce. Walking

away with the first prize for Best Overall Car and second prize for Best Engine Bay in the Show and shine category, was Ricardo Skipper, chairperson of MK1 Lifestyle. “It felt awesome to win the awards. It made all the hard work worth it”, he said. The space was limited and this was a deliberate decision on the part of WCE, enabling them to control the event better. WCE plans on making this an annual convention in the community and doing things bigger in the years to come. “We think using the supplier Deafrow really contributed in a huge way to the success of the event. Their setup for the competition really engaged the crowd and made everyone feel part of the event instead of just another attendee. We’d like to thank our sponsors, all of whom has supported our event from the beginning,” said Elaine.
