the residents in their desperateness, wants to meet the government halfway by building their own houses. This will also alleviate the global housing dilemma fostering and embracing a culture of ownership that is much needed in communities. The community are continually expanding and with no new housing foresights, intense density will be the result. Increased density of communities can lead to inadequacy of basic municipal services, and exhaustion of existing infrastructure networks. The capacity to utilise toilets, taps, and drains per household can stretch the utilisation ability of the existing infrastructure. Anecdotally there is a serious concern around the topic of overcrowding and additional strain on infrastructure. At the beginning of democracy in South Africa, the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP), kicked-off with its first priority – to meet the basic needs of people. Nelson Mandela appealed to all future government leaders to honour these principles. These priorities are vital to enable reconstruction of family life in all societies. It can also be regarded as a foundation towards democracy as the constitution of South Africa states that no one may be deprived of property except in terms of law and general application. Are these fundamental RDP principles still

honoured? Are people still a priority? These questions ultimately became driving factors that`s taking this once patient and peaceful town to an area having various protest actions, as was seen on 27 July 2020 and on previous occasions. Residents were expressing their severe anguish as it seems that all the municipality is doing is calling meetings and collect names to put on lists, and no one ever knows what happens to those registers. Are these registers merely a technique to calm residents? Should municipalities not instead display transparency by continuously updating residents about developments? The Minister of the Department of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, recently stated, that “decent housing is not a privilege, but a right” and to provide people with houses will restore their dignity. So, is the community of Mamre waiting to be honoured, or is this the situation as an end result for our residents to embrace? - Marshé Passenz is a concerned resident and student at the University of the Western Cape, specialising in local government issues and challenges

HAVE YOUR SAY! DRAFT INCLUSIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH STRATEGY (IEGS) The City of Cape Town is in the process of finalising its Draft Inclusive Economic Growth Strategy (IEGS). The IEGS is a high-level strategy aimed at achieving long-term inclusive economic growth through addressing a wide range of economic challenges that are felt at a national level, which include inadequate growth of the local economy, widespread unemployment, and worsening inequality – as well as the compounding impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Inclusive economic growth is the only path to recovery from the deeply felt impacts of these challenges and the pandemic, as well as to achieve a better standard of living and more dignity for Capetonians. Exciting water-project taking shape at Reygersdal Primary MEGAN MAVOSA

B

E AfriBusiness, a company specializing in water conservation, renewable energy and agriculture, recently launched an innovative water purification pilot project at Reygersdal Primary. The first of its kind in South Africa, the exciting initiative could pave the way for similar initiatives in Atlantis and immediate vicinity. WaterKiosk is a project that turns borehole water into purified water and made fit for human consumption. CEO, Bradley Chetty, says they have done these types of projects all over Africa, especially East Africa, but this is going to be the first of its kind in South Africa. “Reygersdal has the privilege of being the first school to get a

project like this,” he explained with excitement. The aim is for the school to sell the water to the public at very affordable prices. Furthermore, a recycling system will enable the school to use excess ground water for ablution facilities. Solar panels will also be installed to assist in generating electricity for the system. Reygersdal will benefit in many ways, i.e. from the income of water-sales, site rental, electricity from the solar panels and water from the ablution facility. The school was chosen after Lentino Dirks (an ex- learner) wanted to plough back into the school and community he comes from. Dirks is now a bookkeeper for the company. “Any school needs funds to enable them to give the best to every single learner. There are so many benefits

De Kock was born and raised in Atlantis and continued to follow his dream of becoming a music artist. His music genre, which is RnB/Hip Hop, might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but his song is one that many can relate to. Although his role model is Curtis Jackson (better known as 50 cent), he admits that his true support has always been his family and friends. “Just keep on being creative and build your network and followers, so that you can expand and gain that support from the community. Always work hard do your best in your craft,” is his advice to those who also want to get into the music industry. The crew was established during the COVID 19 pandemic and is made up of nearly one hundred Ford ST owners from all over Cape Town. One of the members, Christo Martinus, says they have a lot planned and hope to donate to various institutions across Cape
