Freedom is...action, not words: When asked what their beliefs

and hopes are for their people, Rasta Ananda and Christeline Esau agree that people must stop saying and never do. "When we say equal rights and justice, how equal are we? God does not only speak through man, he also speaks through woman and child, so we must not exclude them. That is my cry,” says Ananda. Christeline believes being a Rasta is about actions of the heart and the way in which one speaks. The couple has been living in the Atlantis Dunes for four years with their two-year-old son, selling herbs to make an honest living. In South Africa, Freedom Day is observed every year on 27 April. Horse Pals call on community Ledimo case: ‘We to help save animals believe he is innocent’ MEGAN MAVOSA

oshua Swarts is the founder and director of Horse Pals Atlantis, which started in 2018. He realised that many young children were idolizing gangsters and felt that a way to help these young ones are through horses and other animals. “God told me to do something for His creation.” Horse Pals offers three types of activities, mostly for children. “We’ve got a youth development program where we teach kids how to look after animals. We also started our horse-riding school where we teach kids how to ride and groom a horse. Then we also have workshops and interaction with other organisations,” explains Swarts. His role in Horse Pals is to make sure that all animals that have been abused and neglected are protected. He also tries to make sure that they find new homes or get vet treatment when needed. They offer the community assistance by giving advice or help their sick animals get vet treatment. They also help animal owners to find their animals when they get lost or stolen. In addition to these good deeds, Horse Pals also help the community with food and other necessities whenever they can. But they also face many challenges. “When I have to confiscate horses that have been stolen by gangsters, I always get death threats, but it doesn’t bother me. When COVID started, it really affected us financially because people now think twice about donating to the organisation.” Currently they get no assistance from welfare organisations and Swarts has to use his own stretched

They give us information about animal cruelty and the neglecting of animals in the area via social media. We respond on the information we get from the community.” After being based in Atlantis for a few years, they moved to their new location on a farm near Saxonwold at the of last month.

They also undertook a house search in Orange Street, Atlantis which led to the arrest of a 42-year-old male for dealing in dagga to the street value of R2000. After the completion of a lengthy internal investigation conducted by SAPS, Ledimo was found fit to continue as head of the station. he day on which the Mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato, could not attend a scheduled meeting in Atlantis citing medical reasons, his official Facebook page apparently told a different story. On 15 April 2021, the mayor was pictured in Delft alongside members of his political party. There, he was seen engaging with residents from the area, in support of Dineo Masiu, the Democratic Alliance’s Ward 20 candidate for the by-elections which took place on 21 April. The Atlantis engagement started on Tuesday, 23 February when, following a series of land-invasion attempts in protest against housing shortages, Plato met with community members to address a number of issues presented to him. During the feedback session, the mayor worked through a list of points, providing answers to only some. With the majority thereof noted for follow up, he assured the community that there would be another meeting scheduled with all the key stakeholders from relevant departments present. It was agreed that the follow-up meeting would take place on 8 April at 12h00. On 6 April, his office notified the community that the mayor has taken

ill, postponing the meeting to 15h00 on the following Thursday, 15 April. On 12 April, Plato’s office moved the meeting time to 11h00, with the endtime at 12h30. After some emails to the Mayor’s office requesting that they honour their initial timecommitment, the meeting time was shifted to 11h00 until 15h00. But, on the 14th, the mayor’s office postponed the meeting once again, saying that the mayor is acting on doctor’s orders. This final postponement of the meeting did not sit well with the community, because the mayor was allegedly seen in Delft only two days prior. Given the benefit of the doubt, they accepted the postponement and wished the mayor well on his recovery. On the 15th, the mayor was found to be doing rounds in the Delft area, with his official Facebook page called “Dan Plato for Cape Town Mayor 2021” confirming in a post how he had spent the morning there.

The congregation of the Pella Moravian Church had already wished her farewell in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Kronenberg had to postpone her plans to go to Europe. Her footprints run deep in the small community of Pella. Her entire family has made significant contributions to the development of the denomination and school in the neighbourhood. She and her two brothers attended Pella Moravian Primary school. Her late mother, Ellen Kronenberg, was a teacher at the school and her father, the late Reverend Joel Charles, was both minister and school principal. During the 1970s, most ministers at the Moravian mission stations served as principals at the schools. reedom Day celebrates freedom and commemorates the first postapartheid elections held on that day in 1994. South Africa is celebrating 27 years of liberation, and it is nothing but a chance to be better and play our part. MONIQUE HANSEN spoke to a few community members about what the day means to them. Janine Passenz: On this day over 25 years ago, we had the opportunity to have access to much more than before 1994. But, even post-apartheid, I still feel we do not have full freedom as it should be, especially accessibility to resources and being able to raise my voice, because of the marginalization we face in our communities. Donae September: Freedom Day means that it is our right, as South African citizens, to be and do more than before 1994. Unfortunately, we have never been free from oppression. It is a cycle that needs to be broken in South Africa. Lenric Michau: Freedom Day signifies the coming together of people. It is a reminder of how far our people has come as a nation, as well as how much progress we made with regard to the peace and unity amongst our people. Donito Botha: It is a day to celebrate those who have fought for our freedom and remember our past so that we do not repeat it. It is our turn to fight for what is our right. Leeroy Maans: Apart from being able to vote, Freedom Day means that I am being recognised as a South African. This means I can go wherever I want to, do whatever I want to, and I can chase my dreams without being restricted.
