Transport providers “held ransom”

applications lodged six months ago

PETER LUHANGA earner transport service providers in the greater Atlantis area are upset with the City of Cape Town and the Provincial Regulatory Entity (PRE) for not granting them operating licences, having lodged applications six months ago.

to address these challenges. “The City is holding us ransom. We have lodged applications in December to the PRE and they referred the applications to the City for approval. The City only confirmed receipt of the applications, but nothing is forthcoming,” said Ashley Poole, secretary and spokesman of the forum. Poole said a protest against the City was on the cards and was being backed by parents of children they transported to school and disgruntled taxi bosses. “One learner transport provider transported 30 children per day, as MyCiTi buses cannot render door-todoor transport services to pupils”, she added.

In the meantime - while waiting for the operating license to be granted - City’s traffic services regularly crack down on the learner transport service providers for operating illegally. Law authorities impound their vehicles issuing hefty fines. The group, with 36 members and 108 vehicles providing learner transport services in the greater Atlantis area, has since formed a forum
