The City only confirmed receipt of the applications, but nothing is forthcoming,” said Ashley Poole, secretary and spokesman of the forum. THE MAGIC OF GIVING ...AND RECEIVING

A

s we depict on page 1 and 4 respectively, and like every other year since its inception, Mandela Day 2015 once again inspired young and old “to do good” in one way or the other. To a degree this coincided with the month of Ramadaan, an important period of sacrifice and generosity for millions of Muslims worldwide. This holy time is characterised by personal sacrifice, good deeds and compassion towards others, which is the essence of Mandela Day. It somehow moves people to want to do something good and make the world a better place. There is something godly and somewhat magical about giving unto others, and it generally a source of inspiration to both the giver and the receiver.

At the risk of grossly and perhaps unfairly generalising, I have however picked up another tendency amongst so many young people and children in recent times, which tends to take the wind out of my sails every single time I witness it raising its ugly head. It is something that is in total contrast to doing good, going the extra mile or taking showing compassion. It is something called apathy. One dictionary giving us at least 10 synonyms for it, i.e. lack of interest, lack of enthusiasm, lack of concern, unresponsiveness, passiveness, detachment, dispassion and lack of involvement. From my own experiences in the last few years, I have seen so many signs and attitudes that is quite concerning. Many of these youngsters somehow think the world or the country owes them something, and that they know it all, they are “unteachable”. The lack of pride in their work and general conduct is equally concerning, which sounds all kinds of alarm bells.

Abrahams claimed that during the early planning stages of the City’s Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system, residents and people employed in the informal public transport sector were not consulted.

Herron said the city assesses the applications based on the type of school (preprimary, primary or secondary), the location of the schools in relation to the MyCiTi routes, and whether older children can make use of MyCiTi instead. Furthermore, motivation from the school principals is taken into account.

If, based on this, the City is satisfied that the learner services are required, it directs the PRE to grant such licences. The PRE in turn ensures that such vehicles are up to the required standard. “For this reason, the City has not yet provided the required direction in terms of these applications and the PRE in turn reserved adjudicating these applications until the City is in a position to make an informed decision,” said Herron.

MyCiTi make changes after complaints

A

fter feedback and much unhappiness from many MyCiti users, the City of Cape Town held community information sessions last week to notify all Atlantis, Mamre and Pella residents on refinements made to the MyCiTi services and have their questions answered by City officials.

The City has taken these suggestions on board and has made a number of changes to the service including: • All Saturday and Sunday feeder services now arrive at their stops one hour earlier so that passengers can arrive at the Atlantis Station trunks in time for the first departures • Earlier buses will be introduced on feeders 235 and 237 from Mondays to Fridays • Frequency on some of the feeder routes where full buses were experienced last week has been improved. For example, on 233 and 236 trip frequency has been improved from a bus every 10 minutes to a bus every six minutes.

One Pella resident said MyCiti doesn’t cater for the aged. “With Golden Arrow we had pensioner`s rates. Pella only has two bus stops, meaning we have to walk very far”. Another Mamre resident echoed the sentiments about too little bus stops and added: “MyCiti fares are also more expensive than Golden Arrow and we spend more money on travelling now than before”.

Early feedback have resulted in major improvements and a full survey on all Atlantis routes was planned for Wednesday 22 July.

Applications for ECD grants now open

Cape Town’s Social and Early Childhood Directorate has made in grant funding for this

Community organisations working in the same areas of focus as that of the directorate can apply, provided they meet the criteria.

Organisations working in the areas of early childhood development, street people, substance abuse, youth development, vulnerable groups and poverty alleviation will be able to apply for funding for developmental projects. The minimum amount per project

is R100 000 and applications must include a detailed business plan with detailed breakdown of the project costs. Organisations must also be able to provide documentation like registration certificates, tax clearance certificates, and copies of municipal rates and service accounts where applicable, etc. Application forms are available at the Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate’s District Offices.

Mandela Day once again inspires everyone WARM HEARTS FOR MADIBA: Staff of

Impact News together with Jesse Pillay and her family from Parklands dedicated their 67 Minutes for Mandela to treat more than 20 senior citizens from the Weskus Seniors Club. They donated warm blankets, gloves and caps, while the group was served a scrumptious lunch. On the far right is Janine Lategan from Impact News, Mrs Davids from Weskus Seniors and Jesse Pillay.

NATURAL BEAUTY: The Mandela Day Charity event is held every year at the City`s Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve by the DCCP staff for Environmental Education.

On 17 July 2015 the City’s staff and Atlantis Dunes Off-Road Executive (ADORE) entertained thirty Grade 8 learners from Saxonsea Secondary School who participated in the Dunes Clean-up earlier this year with 4x4 rides and sand-boarding.

What to in case of an Emergency at Koeberg?

National legislation (NNR Act of 1999) requires Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to have an established emergency plan to protect the public in the unlikely event of a nuclear accident. The Act also requires that the effectiveness of the Integrated Koeberg Nuclear Emergency Plan be tested by the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) every two years.

So, what should residents know and do in case of an emergency at Koeberg?

There are three levels of emergencies at Koeberg.

Alert – the first level

An Alert is declared when an event has occurred that could reduce the level of safety of the power station, but back-up plant systems will still function. Local Authority officials are notified and response facilities are established on a standby basis.

What are you required to do in the event of an Alert?

No action is required by members of public. This is an on-site event only, as the incident is contained on-site and only impacts on-site personnel.

Site Emergency – the second level

In the event of a Site Emergency, a problem with a safety system has occurred, or is likely to occur.

Local Authority officials are mobilised at this stage in preparation for the possibility of a more serious situation.

What are your required to do in the event of a Site Emergency?

No action is required by members of the public - this is an on-site event only, as the incident is contained on-site and only impacts on-site personnel.

How will you be notified in the event of a Site Emergency?

In the event of a Site Emergency being declared, press releases will be sent to the media. Members of the public would be made aware of the incident at the power station, using the news media.

General Emergency – the third level

A General Emergency is the most serious but most unlikely emergency situation. There is a likelihood that radioactive material could be released from the power station beyond the Koeberg Power Station boundary.

What are your required to do in the event of a General Emergency?

Listen to your radio. If there is a General Emergency, the public notification system will be supplemented by regular instruction messages on Good Hope FM, Kfm, as well as on local SABC television channels. Follow all instructions issued.

The Koeberg Emergency Plan consists of two Emergency Planning Zones around Koeberg.

If you are instructed to evacuate, residents will have to proceed via car or public transport to the nearest Mass Care Centre which will be identified via radio stations. You will only be instructed to evacuate if you could possibly be exposed to harmful levels of radiation. You will likely be away from your home for a few days and will be notified by news media when you can return.

Children at school

Your school-going children will be well cared for.

City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management personnel will be in contact with local schools. In the event of an instruction to evacuate, scholars will be evacuated to another pre-identified school outside the affected area where arrangements will be in place to care for the children and keep them in contact with their parents/guardians. Do not attempt to fetch your children from the affected school as this would disrupt the school’s evacuation process.

Caring for animals in the event of an emergency

Animal owners may take their animals with them during an evacuation. If animals have to stay behind, ensure that they have enough food and water. The SPCA will assist in case of an emergency. Owners can become members of the SPCA and register their pets at the same time for emergencies.

Caring for those with special needs There are special plans to assist and care for persons who are medically disabled or handicapped. Find out about the special assistance that may be available in your community. Register with the local office or the fire department for special assistance in an emergency. The City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management can be contacted on telephone number 080 911 HELP (080 911 4357) for further information and assistance.

What is meant by food banning?

Banning of foods is only applicable to farmers and home-grown crops. In the event of a major incident at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, the Department of Agriculture will issue periodic information regarding the safety of using home-grown products.

Remember that livestock that graze in open fields that have been contaminated, will ingest radioactive material which will be absorbed into the animal’s system, thereby making the food or milk dangerous for human consumption.Emergency officials will advise you what to do based on the type of emergency. Please follow their instructions to prevent or minimise the contamination of food products.

Residents living in the 16km radius from Koeberg, are advised to consult their Annual Emergency Plan Calendar for information about the Koeberg Emergency Plan and information about the various Assembly Points and maps. The Public Safety Information Forum (PSIF) meetings are held quarterly at Koeberg where information pertaining to Koeberg’s Emergency Plan is discussed, the remaining PSIF meeting dates for this year are: Thursday, 30 September and Thursday, 26 November 2015. Saam met Dedick Jansen, `n lidmaat van die kerk, het hulle jong mense tussen die ouderdome van 12 en 20 uitgenooi om die week met gaste deur te bring. Vir die week was daar tussen 80 en 150 kinders per dag teenwoordig, vir wie `n maaltyd kon aangebied met onder meer die hulp van verskeie borge, insluitende African Bank en Seven Eleven.

ity of Atlantis Community Church (COACH), under the leadership of Pastors Trevor and Lizette Klaasen used the June school holiday to empower young children from Atlantis to participate in a youth program hosted by the church. The program consisted of many activities including group exercises, dancing etc. to more than 150 children per day. The intention was to teach

the children the basic life skills and how to work together as a team.

The week ended by rewarding groups and group leaders for teamwork, commitment and discipline. “COACH partnered with Uniting Christian student Association of South Africa (UCSA), who presented the program. Their main focus is to make children aware of the skills and abilities they have”, said Lizette Klaasen.

Cancer Foundation F open its doors PETER LATEGAN

he Tiara Cancer Foundation has in recent months opened their offices in the Dollies Building, Mark Street in Atlantis.

The foundation was established as an NPO in October 2012 with their main aim being to support all patients and immediate family members affected with cancer by means of transportation to and from medical care facilities 24 hours a day. Other forms of financial aid include food parcels and vouchers to these families. They are aiming to host counselling sessions and focus groups in Atlantis and surrounding communities. Eventually, as the organisation grows, they will be looking at aiding the rest of the West Coast as far as Vredenburg “With the support of a local businessman who donated office space to the foundation as well as the generosity of Old Mutual who fully furnished

our offices, we were able to establish the foundation.

We have also received aid from Media 24, Henriques cc, GFG IT Solutions, Martin Louw, Saxonsea Hardware, Die Damhuis, Cafe Delos and Spier Wine Estate”, explains cofounder Antonio Don. “At this point in time we have six children on our program whom we have assisted. We will only be providing assistance to children for now and will reach adults as funding allows or as soon as more sponsors come on board.” he said.

Taking the “foreign” out of foreign exchange

I

n order to better understand the growing trend of ordinary people trading in foreign exchange (forex), PETER LATEGAN spoke to Garth L. East, Managing Director for FXV Group, Pty (Ltd) for Commodities and Currencies.

Although foreign exchange (forex) is the largest financial market in the world, it is largely a “foreign concept” for many people. In the past it was primarily the domain of large financial institutions and multi-national corporations, but with the advent of internet-trading a few years ago, more and more ordinary people from all walks of life became part of this growing industry.

A WILLINGNESS TO SUCCEED After working for several asset management companies in South Africa, Spain, France and the UK, Garth L. East started Forex Varsity in 2009, training family and friends on a rather informal basis. Although it was never intended as a training entity, he soon realized the value and business potential in training people to trade. Although the company trades in various commodities such as metals, oil, etc, training is mostly giving in foreign exchange, as this is easier to understand consisting primarily of technical matters, then moving onto fundamentals too. “Over the last few years we trained more than a thousand people from all walks of life including, doctors, lawyers and architects, even priests, deaf people and a boy of 13 years old.

You simply need a willingness to succeed and we will show you how. Our ambition is for the ordinary man to make money. Making money in US Dollars, but living and spending in Rand is a wonderful position to be in”, explains a very passionate East.

The company doesn`t offer a beginners course, but start out with an intensive training course. He explains: “You cannot learn to trade the financial markets in three days, it is simply not possible. For this reason we offer a complimentary 18 month mentoring programme, with daily access to our trading floors, access to our traders in person or via telephone, and as much help as you need for that period”. FXV Group trades live with clients every day of the week, and every Tuesday in Cape Town until 8pm, accommodating people who are in full-time jobs. One of their other unique selling points is a newsletter containing leads and tips, available at R200 per month.

FOREX TRADING IN SIMPLE TERMS “The simplest way to explain forex is as follows: We are buying a currency when it is increasing in value and we sell it again when it decreasing in value. These little differences are called pips.

We collate pips to dollar value. For instance, one US Dollars per pip for some of my smallest accounts and up to 35 US Dollars per pip on my largest account”, East explains. They recommend that people start trading with at least one thousand US Dollars (approximately R12 000.00). Doing it part time means five hours per week, which is a combination of time with a trader, and time on your own.

Many other forex trading companies tend to trade from countries where they are not regulated very strictly, but FXV only trade through banks and do not use brokers. “The reason for this is that the banking industry is very tightly regulated and generally has compliance officers from the regulatory authorities based in their offices. When it comes to your and my hard earned money, FXV wants it in the safest place possible, that’s why we use banks” he explains.

Quality of life is important to East, and he believes a successful part-time or full-time career in forex can help you get there in the shortest space of time. “If you do this right, you will never ever be unemployed again” he concludes.

LORENZO DEVOTEd TO HIS COMMUNITY`S HEALTH

From sweeping floors to medical doctor

iven everything that young medical doctor Lorenzo Maya has achieved, one would be pleased to find that this talented young man hasn’t forgotten his roots.

He is the son of the well-known Pastor Isaac and Mrs.Viviane Maya. He attributes a healthy sense of humour and humility to his success and is keen to share his story with all who cares to listen, “If my story inspires only one person facing challenges similar to the ones I’ve faced in the past, that would be enough,” says the 28 year old.

Lorenzo grew up in Atlantis, attended Avondale Primary school and Atlantis Senior Secondary School. “When I was in high school, my friend and I decided we needed extra cash and went job hunting in the Atlantis industrial area.

Here I landed my first job sweeping a factory”. This experience offered perspective on what it was he did not want to do. However, this ambitious young man’s pursuit to become a doctor started many years before that.

As a child he was very ill, frequenting Red Cross Children’s Hospital. It was as a result of this that his grandmother first told him, “One day you’re going to be doctor Maya.”

The road that led to Lorenzo attaining his medical degree in 2011 was paved with a number of challenges. After he completed high school, his grades were too low to study medicine. This did not stop him. The words of his high school principal motivated him to continue trying. “It’s not how you fall, but how you get up,” his principal said. The University of Stellenbosch granted him access to their medical Academic Development Program and would later reconsider his application to study medicine, provided he proved himself academically. He also didn’t have the funds to pay for his studies but obtained a study loan. In 2006, his first year as a medical student, Lorenzo received a call from the university’s finance department telling him that a woman from Franschoek would like to pay for his studies, “At first I thought

it was a joke, until I saw the funds in my student account, covering all my expenses for one year!”, he says with a smile. Today Lorenzo works as a locum doctor at Wesfleur Hospital in Atlantis, as well as Kraaifontein and Porterville hospitals. He’s also enrolled as a law student at the University of South Africa. “I got tired of complaining about the government, and not doing something about it. So my plan is to join the Department of Health and aid to a better future for our health sector in South Africa,” he explains.

Lorenzo is a strong believer in miracles and the human ability to overcome adversity, thus his favourite bible scripture, Philippians 4: 13, which reads, “I can do all things through Christ that gives me strength.” He is rumoured to have devoured whole pots of breyani at a time. His favourite movie is Men of Honour and his loyalty lies with Manchester United FC. This light-hearted doctor in a final bout of humour adds, “Enjoy life because you are going be dead much longer.”

TOUGH COOKIES: The teams of Atlantis Leeds United and Saxon went head-to-head earlier this month in a nailbiting soccer slam on Robinvale Sports field. Female soccer is gaining in popularity locally.

n Saturday 4 July, female teams Atlantis Leeds United and Saxon went head-to-head in a physical showdown, exhibiting just how tough female soccer players can be.

Atlantis Leeds United scoring the first 2 goals in the first half. Saxon coach, Gavin Combrink remained on the edge of his toes, intensely guiding and commenting from the side lines. “We had chances, we didn’t make use of it, and we didn’t score the goals” admitted coach Combrink afer the first half. “The opposition has got us under pressure and they are using the facility very well”. Atlantis Leeds United coach, Amelia Milligan remained calm. “At the moment they are putting a lot of pressure on u,s which is good because we’ve scored the goal, but we are starting to lose a bit of our patience”, said Milligan in the first half. Their team is mainly made up of youngsters with their youngest player being only 12. During half time, coach Combrink’s evaluation of his teams downfall in the first half resonated across Robinvale sports ground.

“We need to take action first! We need to sort ourselves out right now. Dis nou of nooit!” yelled Combrink. The game resumed with Saxon scoring their first goal in a matter of minutes, raising the stakes for Atlantis Leeds United. The second half demonstrated both teams urge for victory.

With several bulldozing tackles and aching knee collisions, it could well be said these girls were playing like boys. With time running out Fazline Adams (26) shot a bullet of a goal, which would have defined the game, if it was not for Atlantis Leeds United goal keeper, Tamia Milligan (16) who made the best save of the game.

However, with their guard down Fazline Adams of Saxon scored 2 goals in the last 15 minutes. “As long as there is time left in soccer, there is time to score”, said Combrink.

The final score was 3-2 in favour of Saxon. In the true spirit of the game, the teams shook hands in the middle of the pitch after the game, despite stinging knees, swollen ankles and grazed foreheads and forearms.

he talented drifter, Shane Green competed in a drift competition, The Supadrift Regionals at Killarney on Saturday the 11th of July 2015 and once again made his fans and Atlantis proud with his achievements.

“Competing in all three rounds was tough”, says Shane. With competitors like speed and sound driver Sean February, X-Mod`s driver Noer Asmoedien, legendary Steenberg tyres driver Chinyany Croudster and many more he felt the pressure of the competition but he worked hard enough to get to the top.

He came in third place in round two and round three. “I am currently working on my second vehicle, a BMW E46 M3, and plans to take on the national series as soon as this car is complete”. This series is more advanced than the regionals, but Shane believes that he can make it to the top as well. Shane has many future plans, which include opening a drifting and spinning school for the local youth.
