Bygesê, is dit beslis een van die mees handige uitvindings “since sliced bread”, wat hedendaagse kommunikasie soveel makliker maak, of dit nou vir werk of plesier is. So groot was my verbasing toe nou die ander dag, toe iemand vir iets stuur wat ek wil lees, en wonder bo wonder weer wou lees.

Soveel so, dat ek besluit het ek deel dit graag met ons lesers.

• We live in times where many know the price of everything, but not the value of anything.

s Avondale Primary gears up to move into their brand-new school building, a farewell celebration was held in honour of the old school building that had served the community for the past 42 years.

The farewell included a Valentine's Ball on the 15th of February, followed by a family day the next day. As an ex-learner at the school acting deputy principal Karen Johnson says that it felt only appropriate to say goodbye to the old building that holds so many memories.

"We wanted to give old schoolmates a chance to be together at the school for one last time." The Valentine's ball was set between the first and second

Former learners of the school could walk around the school one last time, revelling in the memories of years gone

by. For many it was years that very much laid the foundation towards becoming the people they are today. By the end of February, everything will have been moved over to the new buildings, and the old school demolished. While standing on the new premises and looking back at the old school, Johnson says that, "One can hardly believe everything that we managed to accomplish in that old building, and for so many years!" This is a profound perspective where, looking back, serves as a reminder that one must keep moving forward. *The school’s principal, Michael Scholtz, sadly passed away at the end of 2018.

ike every other year, The Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni, announced the 2019/2020 South African budget last week. Here are some of the main points that affect most of us.

• Personal taxes: a slight adjustment to the tax threshold of the income tax bracket has been made.

• The fuel levy will increase by 30c per litre for petrol and 29c per litre for diesel.

• A beer will cost you 12c more.

• Wine increased by 22c per bottle.

• Whiskey increased by R1.14 per bottle.

• Cigarettes increased by 64c per pack Social grants were increased moderately.

• The old-age and disability pensions increased by R80 to R1770 per month.

• The foster-care grant increased

by R40 to R1000 per month.

• The child-care grant will increase by R10 in April and R10 in October 2019 to reach R430 per month.

Smart-park: Save our pitch, says youth

heir concerns come in the wake of the deplorable acts of vandalism carried out by a person or people at the park where patches of the synthetic pitch have already been removed (pictured right).

In the latest incident one of the basketball posts completely broken and removed. The very existence of the Atlantis smart park built at a cost of just over R12 million, and opened with great fanfare less than two years ago, is now precarious. Within weeks of the grand opening the park was a hive of activities with soccer by avid high school soccer player from across the area, taking centre stage. Learners are appalled by the act of vandalism and said it is shocking. “It’s even worse to think that people are busy destroying the pitch that gives us so much enjoyment. Every afternoon learners from all over Atlantis descends onto the pitch where we compete in our own little competition.

“Our greatest fear is arriving at the park one afternoon and found the entire synthetic soccer pitch has been stripped.

What are we going to do and where are we going to play? The people stealing the synthetic pitch will not just destroy the pitch but friendships that has been brokered at the field. We are begging the City of Cape Town to intervene and

build a proper fence around the pitch to save our soccer field.” Residents staying around the park and echoing the sentiments of the learners believes the pitch is being vandalised by people in the area. They also implore residents to be on the lookout for people selling pieces of green synthetic grass as rubber maths or using it in driveways or in and around their homes. Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Zahid Badroodien, confirmed that vandalism and antisocial behaviour have been huge challenges for the City’s Recreation and Parks Department in maintaining the facility since 2017.

“Remedial measures have been put in place such as assigning law enforcement officers to patrol around the clock, but problems persist. We’ve also considered placing security guards at the park two hours a day, but this is costly and unsustainable. The only way to reduce vandalism is for the community to protect the facility by seeing the park as part of the community. We encourage community members to take ownership of their facilities and in partnership with the City of Cape Town, build a working relationship to protect their community assets,” Badroodien said.

Reporting crime is very important

S

adly, there are still many criminal incidents that go unreported each year. The problem with this is that it contributes to the dissemination of misinformation around crime.

What the SAPS and private security companies really need to apprehend suspects is accurate and contextualised information.

Fidelity ADT’s National Marketing and Communications Manager, Charnel Hattingh, says no matter how big or small or how insignificant you feel the crime is, you need to report it. “What the public needs to understand is that by reporting crime you are helping the authorities establish crime trends.

This in turn leads to better allocation of resources. Your crime report could

also lead to more arrests as your crime could be a critical link to another similar crime.” There is sometimes apprehension or fear associated with reporting a crime so explain that this can be done confidentially. Sometimes criminals threaten further violence if a crime is reported. However, by not reporting the crime, these criminals will carry on doing this to other victims. It is our responsibility to step up and report what happened. She says it may be helpful to accompany a friend or family member to the police station when a crime needs to be reported. “Offer your support or consider a trauma counsellor to assist if the victim is showing signs of trauma. Reporting a crime is often a big step inthe healing process,” she said.

Sparks fly at SEZ elective meeting VINCENT CRUYWAGEN he nominated community members introduced at General Meeting of the Atlantis Special Economic Zone Community Stakeholder Network (ASEZ-CSN) on Thursday 7 February 2019 , is regarded by the provincial and national, local government as legitimate partners.

This is core message that reverberated at the meeting. Prof Brian Williams, who facilitated the important meeting held at the Robinvale Hall, silenced those who argued that the process was flawed and not legitimate. Williams had a torrid time and faced a barrage of questions that at times reached boiling point. He said the entire framework is a brand new model that was created and does not exist anywhere else in the country, adding the structure were created to serve the best needs of the community. However, pandemonium broke out shortly after Patrick Kadalie, part of the Oversight Committee (OC), announced the elected members and indicated that the Youth nominee didn’t meet the criteria. Of the 15 seats only 12 were filled.

A very outspoken resident, Peter Stoffberg, lambasted the omission of the youth sector. “How can the youth be overlooked especially in view of the high unemployment rate. I represented myself in terms of youth to serve on the CSN, but was disqualified based on vague and miscommunicated criteria” Other questions raised from the floor doubt the validity and credibility of the election process and why certain members who they claim belong to political parties were nominated.

Steven Alberts, representing the faithbased sector, and Mischka Ganief in the civic organisation seat. He argued that Alberts serves on the executive body of a political body, while Ganief is part of Patricia de Lille`s newly formed political party, the Good Party. Responding to this Williams said: “This process cannot take your rights away. If Alberts is a member of a political party that’s fine.

We cannot ignore his constitutional rights as a voter as an individual. The same principal applies with the issue of SANCO linked to the ANC. SANCO chose to associate themselves with a political party, but they are not a political party.”

Kadalie gave insight on how the OC came about determining the outcome that was reached. He informed the meeting they found that the youth sector nominee did not meet the criteria.

“Some of the key issues in terms of the principles were the, track record of the status as umbrella body that represents the interest of the sector. When we applied these principles the youth organisation did not meet the criteria and we got the necessary evidence to support this. Making this decision we will have therefore await new nominations,” he explained. Resident and youth developer, Allen Beukes, wanted to know if the people in the room decide to declare whole process null and void, what the next step would be. “Wait for the report compiled by the OC, then make the decision to challenge the legitimacy of the process and lodge a complaint,” Williams responded.

Ring Shot places Elric in Top 10 ALLISON ADAMS

I

t is the third year in a row that Elric Arendse has made it to the Top Ten List for Wedding Photography at the Admired in Africa (AIA) Awards. The AIA is a digital platform that focuses exclusively on showcasing the best photographers and cinematographers in Africa.

Elric, hailing from Atlantis and an IT consultant by day, has been doing parttime photography for the past eight years. “It all started with an inexpensive compact camera. I took photos at an event for my son’s crèche, and one of the other parents asked whether I do 21st birthday shoots as well. SWEET LOVE: During February we

The San Mitchell Independent School took the initiative to share their love with the community of Atlantis, with their “Share the love” campaign. The school started the campaign this year to teach their kids about how important kindness and caring for others are. The school wanted to celebrate Valentine’s Day, not by promoting the traditional ways of having someone to share the day with, but by reaching out to the community. Distributing candy in the local mall, was a way of sharing love to everybody and not just one person.

To respect and listen to each other’s opinions, before finding a solution. “We never forget where our help comes from, no matter what we go through, because with God, everything is forgiven,” Wilma said.

Martin & Delores de Villiers: Been married for 39 years and the love for each other and mostly living a spiritual life has kept them together.

Having God involved, not only in their marriage, but in their individual lives, play a big role in building a stable and loving home.

“Being a committed and emotionally involved father helps with making a home stronger. We do everything together, but we also allow each other to do things separately and outside of our comfort zones,” Martin added.

Better service delivery in Atlantis A City delegation recently visited Atlantis to do a site inspection on the progress being made with service delivery, informal trading and the construction of housing units.

The delegation also visited newly built City rental units. One of the priorities identified during the visit was the installation of electricity at 40 new rental units in Kanonkop. The City has asked the service provider to proceed with the project.

The construction of an additional 160 rental units has started. In relation to economic development in the area, the delegation visited informal trading sites in Witsand to get an understanding of the challenges faced by traders.

Informal trading is an important part of the economy, as it affords traders the opportunity to earn a living and enter the formal market.

There is a definite need to regulate and assist informal traders more effectively, as this will open up economic opportunities in Atlantis.

Feeling festive: In December, Cape Town was named the “World’s Leading Event and Festival Destination for 2018” at the World Travel Awards in Lisbon, Portugal. Living with load-shedding You can reduce load-shedding pain by planning ahead.

skom has resumed load-shedding, and the City encourages residents to plan ahead and ensure that they stay connected, healthy and safe during power outages.

• Communication: Charge your cellphone, laptop, tablet, radio and other devices when power is available.

• Transport: Make sure that your vehicle always has fuel, as most petrol stations cannot pump fuel during outages.

• Cash: Keep some cash on you, as ATMs cannot operate without electricity.

• Security and safety: Check that backup batteries for electric gates, garage doors and security systems will manage loadshedding. Store torches, gas lamps and candles in places where they will be easy to find in the dark.

Follow your City on:

• Eating: If you do not have a gas stove, prepare meals before outages. Boil water and keep it in thermos flasks for hot drinks. You can also use an insulating cover on teapots, pots and pans to keep drinks and meals warm.

• Medication: Most medication requiring refrigeration can be kept in a closed fridge for several hours without spoiling, but you should check with your doctor or pharmacist if in doubt.

• Traffic lights: Intersections with traffic lights affected by load-shedding should be treated as four-way stops. The motorist who stops first has the right of way.

• Where possible, companies should consider flexible working arrangements so as to reduce traffic during peak hours.

In the past, the City has been able to reduce the impact of load-shedding in its electricity supply areas through generation capacity from the Steenbras hydro-electric power scheme. This is not possible now, as the Steenbras scheme is undergoing maintenance until May 2019.

The maintenance was specifically planned for this time as electricity usage is lowest early in the year. With the latest round of Eskom load-shedding, the City is unable to assist its customers.

The walkways connecting three platforms at the MyCiTi station in Atlantis and two platforms at the station in Table View will be roofed.

This will take place without disrupting service, as the contractor will work between 23:00 and 05:00, when buses aren’t operating.

The total project cost is approximately R11 million, with some R6 million budgeted for work at the station in Reygersdal Drive, Atlantis, and R5 million for the station in Blaauwberg Road, Table View.

These are both busy stations and count among the most popular along the MyCiTi network. Residents and schools in these areas had asked the City to make the stations more commuter-friendly and protect commuters from the elements.

Several Port Jackson fig trees will also have to be moved to make way for the roofing at both stations. The trees will be replanted at other MyCiTi stations and stops.

The City has received its 15th consecutive unqualified audit opinion from the Auditor-General for the 2017/18 financial year. This confirms its strong financial position, despite the effects of the extraordinary drought.

The report does however also include findings regarding supply chain management processes that were not properly complied with in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act. These mainly relate to contracts that were amended after award without tabling the reasons in Council. All expenditure was fully accounted for and used to deliver services to residents.

These issues are being addressed and remedial measures taken.

n my first 100 days of office, I went out to our communities and hosted more than 50 public meetings. I particularly wanted to engage with those who believed the City hadn’t delivered the required level of services.

Crime and safety were the biggest concern raised, so we’ve taken steps to help residents feel safer. It’s of the utmost importance for residents to feel that they are seen and heard. While the South African Police Service (SAPS) remains the primary protector of our people we, as the City of Cape Town, also

A message from the Executive Mayor, Dan Plato have a role to play in making sure our communities feel protected. This is why I’ve announced a R165 million allocation to to deploy 100 additional officers, 50 new security cameras and more than 40 new law enforcement vehicles.

I served as mayor during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and it remains a very special memory. The success of this event attracted many other major events to Cape Town.

I believe it is this City’s hard work at capitalising on the success of 2010 in the past nine years that earned us the fantastic accolade of the "World's Leading Festival and Events Destination" at the 2018 World Travel Awards.

We have also allocated R115 million to clean up areas affected by illegal dumping and a general lack of cleanliness. To support this, I will soon launch a clean-up campaign

to mobilise communities to help us by playing their part to keep our beautiful city clean.

We have survived the worst of the water crisis and are grateful to all residents who responded to our call to save every drop they could. We will soon be unveiling a new Water Strategy for a public participation process, so please give us your input. This will allow us to be more resilient to future droughts.

At the ready, 24/7: This summer, there were fewer fatalities through fire.

A safer summer, thankfully The City’s enforcement and rescue services worked hard over the holidays to ensure public safety. Working with volunteers, the South African Police Service, the National Sea Rescue Institute, SANParks and others, their efforts paid off.

Statistics show a reduction in road deaths over the peak season, fewer drownings, an increase in children registrations at the Identikidz beach stalls, and fewer fires and fire-related deaths.

Collectively, the City’s three enforcement agencies arrested 737 suspects on a range of charges, including drunk driving and possession of drugs. Traffic Services arrested 5 056 motorists for outstanding warrants, while another 12 700 warrants were served.

Traffic Services’ officers also recorded just over 200 000 offences, the bulk of which related to speeding.

On the beaches and in other public spaces, Law Enforcement staff confiscated 9 968 bottles (nearly 6 400 ℓ) of alcohol.

Eliminating alcohol from public places means fewer drownings, less anti-social behaviour and fewer vehicle accidents.

The Fire and Rescue Service responded to 2 411 fire calls and 1 126 special service calls. And while there was an increase in residential fires, fewer structures were affected and fewer fatalities recorded.

The Public Emergency Communication Centre’s busiest shifts were New Year’s Eve and Boxing Day, when staff respectively fielded 1 049 and 962 calls. In December, the centre dealt with 41 209 calls, of which 77% were emergencies.

The City thanks every one of its uniformed staff members who helped make our summer safer.

criminals. Some of these initiatives include R10,1 million for security hardening measures such as burglar bars, alarm systems, high-mast lighting, etc.; R20 million for the deployment of facility protection officers, and R9,8 million for the deployment of 312 safety wardens.

These measures are having an effect, but the City cannot do it alone. Report vandalism to the police or Law Enforcement – call 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.

Watch out for, and treat, diarrhoea Diarrhoea, a fairly common ailment during warmer months, is one of the biggest threats to children under 5. An average of 600 to 700 cases of diarrhoea in children under 5 are reported in Cape Town each week.

Symptoms of diarrhoea include loose or watery stools, nausea, vomiting and fever, which can result in dehydration.

Treatment with oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is a simple and cost-effective way to prevent and remedy dehydration.

Mix six level teaspoons of sugar and half

a level teaspoon of salt in one litre of clean water, and give this solution to a child to prevent dehydration caused by diarrhoea.

Start ORT as soon as a child starts having loose stools. Common symptoms of dehydration in children include passing little urine, a dry mouth, tongue and lips; fewer tears when crying; sunken eyes; weakness, and being irritable or lethargic.

If in doubt, take your child to one of the City’s 105 clinics, or call the City’s emergency call centre on 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.

The City is doing its best to safeguard its assets against vandalism and theft, but communities are also urged to take ownership of the facilities and protect them.

Several facilities have already been vandalised since the beginning of the year, costing the City millions in repairs – money that could have been spent elsewhere – and disrupting service delivery.

Art and Conservation equals F.U.N

MONIQUE HANSEN roject F.U.N is an exciting initiative which aims to create awareness about the importance of conservation and opening the space where learners can live out their artistic abilities.

P

In September 2018, the Fundamental Understanding of Nature (F.U.N) project, commenced with a new initiative to attract local learners and teach them how conservation and art can be linked.

The project makes learners aware that they do not need to be academically or athletically inclined in order to make a difference in the world. Every Thursday and Friday the Project F.U.N team consisting of Donna-Lee Beukes (project owner and entrepreneur), Vanita Blake and Whitney Beukes, meet up with the learners of Grosvenor-, Mamre- or Wesfleur Primary School and teach them about the chosen conservation topic for that month, followed by discussions and craft assignments that relates to the topic.

Terence Adams, principal at Grosvenor Primary School is happy to be part of a project like this, because it forms part of their after school “game changer” programme, which ensures that every learner has access to comprehensive, quality after school programmes. ”The project is for those who are not academically strong and it creates a platform where the biggest bully can make a difference, whether it is at

school or at home. Basically, it is open to all and it creates a sense of belonging,” Adams explained. Project F.U.N recently received funds from The Table Mountain Fund (TMF) which supports non-governmental organisations that helps with restoring and protecting the natural wonders of the Cape Floristic Region, as well as The Dassenberg Coastal Catchment Partnership (DCCP).

Hulle het in kontak met van die Khoikhoi stamme gekom, veral die Cochocqwa wie se veiveld oor die hele Skiereiland versprei was. Die strook veld langs die Weskus, met Saldanha in die Noorde, Hottentots Holland in die Ooste en Tafelberg [Khoikhoi naam is Hourikwagga, wat beteken die berg by die see], in die Suide. Dit staan later bekend as die Slagtersveld. Dit was uit hierdie gebied dat die beeste en vetstert skape van die Khoina geruil en per ossewa na die Kasteel in die Kaap gebring is. Omdat so `n jag of ruiltog baie beslommernis ingehou het, het die VOC besluit om poste buite die Kasteel, in `n Noordelike rigting uit te brei. So is `n pos, eerstens in`n groen strook [vanwee die natuurlke varswaterbronne in die omgewing] opgegrig. Dit het De Groene Cloof geheet [Mamre 1808]. Op so `n tipiese pos was daar `n ringmuur om roofdiere uit te hou.

Noord van De Groene Cloof het nog poste begin oopgaan. Dit is waar soutpanne was en die poshouers kon sakke vol sout skraap en dit direk aan die VOC verkoop, of skelmpies met skepe in die hawens van Saldanha of De Kaap ruil handel dryf. Oos van de Groene Cloof was daar nege sulke buiteposte waarop graan gesaai en met vee geboer

is. Die poshouers het De Groene Cloof van graan, riet en vleis voorsien. Die huidige Werf op Pella het voorheen deel uitgemaak van een van hierie nege buiteposte, wat Oos van Groene Cloof lê. Dit het voorheen bekend gestaan as Cabano Plaatz en Groenrivierkop.

Hierdie plaas was een van die vele stukke grond wat later in besit van Carl Stephan [van Italiaans / Duitse herkoms] was. Stephan en sy broers het `n vervoer maatskappy besit, te wete trek-osse op land en `n plat boot [karveel bote] op see. Hy het hom ook sterk beywer vir die suksesvolle hervestiging en welvaart van sy Italiaanse landgenote hier aan die Weskus. William Florentino, [karweier en vissmous te Katzenberg] en die Stephan Broers het floreer en hulle was skatryk karweiers van vleis asook dekriet vanaf Saldanha na die Kaap.

Stephan moes soms soekgeselsskappe al langs die kus lei wie na vermiste skepe se oorlewendes soek. Enige oorlewendes met hulle besittings is na hierdie buiteposte gebring, waar hulle herberg en vars voorraad ontvang het. Volgens mondelinge oorvertelling het Stephan die buitepos [genaamd Pella] van een van die afstammelinge van `n oorlewende van `n soortgelyke bootramp, die Pallas, ingepag. In 1880 verkoop hy die grond, Pella en haal hy ook vir Cabano oor om sy plaas, langs Groenrivierkop – die huidige Dassenberg – aan die Morawiese Kerk in Suid Afrika te verkoop.

Later vanjaar publiseer ons die res van die geskiedenis van Pella in `n spesiale gedenk-publikasie.

Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Full Volume Siren Test 27 February 2019 A full volume siren test of the Koeberg Public Warning System will be conducted in Atlantis, Duynefontein, Melkbosstrand, Van Riebeeckstrand, Philadelphia, Bloubergstrand, Bloubergrandt, West Beach, Sunningdale, Parklands, Robben Island and the farms surrounding Koeberg Nuclear Power Station between 10:00 and 12:00 on the morning of Wednesday, 27 February 2019.

You do not need to take any action, as this is only a test. However, as a precaution, please ensure that your pets are indoors or are in an area where they cannot escape (due to the volume and the sound of the wailing test tone, dogs have been known to run away from their homes). Remember to switch off your radio and television in order to hear the Public Address announcements informing you about the test. Please do not panic as this is only a test. We appreciate your co-operation.

If necessary, individual sirens may be re-tested on Thursday, 28 February 2019, and Friday, 1 March 2019, for maintenance purposes. Note that the sirens form part of the Koeberg Emergency Plan and must be in working order. Communities must Neighbourhood Watch Award partner with the nominations now open City, says Twigg PETER LATEGAN

STAFF REPORTER he City of Cape Town’s annual Neighbourhood Watch Awards event celebrates individuals and groups within the neighbourhood watch fraternity who go above and beyond the call of duty.

The City has opened the nominations process for the annual Neighbourhood Watch Awards.

Now in its second year, the Neighbourhood Watch Awards celebrates and acknowledges the achievements and contributions of individuals and groups who help build safer communities in Cape Town. The nomination process will close on Friday 8 March 2019.

M

eet Alderman Grant Twigg, the City`s newly appointed Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management. He has always had his heart in communities, starting out in the Stellenbosch Advice Office as a para-legal advisor, after which he then became involved in the trade unions as both advisor and negotiator.

He joined the City of Cape Town as a PR councilor in 2000 and since then his political career at the City grew through serving on various portfolio committees. He then became sub-council chairperson for three terms in a row, and more recently, was in appointed in this new, exciting portfolio. With the ability to multi-task, and juggle multiple projects, Twigg still serves as a councilor for his area, which is ward 7. He also dons the hat of Cape Metro Regional Chairperson for the Democratic Alliance. To make residents understand his role and vision, we conducted a brief interview with him.

When was the urban management directorate established?

It is a new portfolio. We previously had four area based Mayoral Committee members. The Executive Mayor, Dan Plato, has now formed one urban management out of the four, and we also now have one Mayco heading it. From this portfolio, the idea is to be proactive. It’s going to look at a system where we are proactive in dealing with community concerns and in rendering services.

What are the roles and responsibilities of the urban management directorate?

We have different directorates. The urban management directorate’s responsibility is to make sure that service delivery across the metro is adequately delivered and this is done by pulling together all the departments so that service delivery is addressed with a holistic approach. Ultimately, what we do is to see if there are blockages in the system, ensure that development is done as planned and that infrastructure is attended to.

How is the urban management directorate going to create economic opportunities?

We are actively engaging communities in creating these opportunities. We are currently changing illegal dumpsites into economic business hubs, for example we are expected to go out to clean up illegal dumping sites, on which we spend billions of rands every year. So instead we need to change the approach and establish economic business hubs at these dumping sites, use the rubbish that has been dumped and turn it into an income. Residents will be employed, and money generated is going to them. The city is going to save a lot of money instead of cleaning up illegal dumping sites every other week.

What is your experience so far in heading the directorate?

The work is challenging. At times you have to admit where the City is failing. Nonetheless, I am excited to be doing what I do. In admitting where the city is failing, for example, we had 43 subsidised housing units in Atlantis which were completed without electricity. It could have been done better and we are now putting in the necessary infrastructure that is outstanding. Everybody must take responsibility in the first place, from the planning stage everything should be involved.

Our directorate makes things gel where there are challenges.

Despite resources at its disposal and its various departments, the City cannot do everything on its own. Communities must partner with the City to accelerate service delivery.

Without their contribution our public safety efforts would be far less effective,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith. "We are always seeking ways to further solidify our relationship with community policing structures, and the evolution of the neighbourhood watch support programme over the past decade proves that.

One cannot underestimate the importance of a well-functioning and committed neighbourhood watch. They know their areas better than anyone, which means they provide a level of crime intelligence that makes the job of the uniformed services easier," said Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.

“The Western Cape has one of the world’s best and most active neighbourhood watch systems.

Their hard work and dedication have paid off, with a 6,8% reduction in property-related crime last year. It is clear that when we all watch, we are all safer. I would like to applaud the active moms, dads, grannies, grandpas, young people, men and women who are making a positive difference in our communities on a daily basis. These awards are a showcase of their collective commitment to the cause, and an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for the efforts they make to keep us safer. The various activities at the schools and other venues are keeping learners occupied, catering to the needs and talents of many. e explains: “As a teenager, I have made many mistakes, but as I grew up, I realised that I have a purpose in life, and that I can do something for our people.”

With some help from the community members, the group cleared a piece of land across from where they live, and now use it for sport and physical exercises such as acrobatics. “These kids don’t have access to facilities that speak to their passions, so I look to see how we can make the most of what we have. We don’t have much to offer, but the children enjoy it, and that’s what matters,” he says. When they are not taking walks to the dunes, they often hang out together as a group.

“Sometimes they’ll be listening to music, and I’ll dance in my old-school ways, which usually end up in them

laughing at me.” Peter’s daughter and her friends are also part of the group, and through this he gets to keep an eye on them and jokes that “especially now, since the teenage hormones will soon be kicking in.”

When spending time with the group, he says it is important to also listen to what they have to say. “I want to better understand which way they are heading in life, and what it is that drives them.

When I learn about what they are currently being exposed to, I am also able to offer them guidance in other ways.”

He says people often say that they want to see change, and that all he did was to put those words into action… and that is to make a difference. “I cannot bring change on my own, I can only try, then hope that the next person adopts what it is that I am trying to offer.”

Adams is a second-year sports science student and an Ambassador for Pérez Sport Investment, who helps her build experience in the field.

Adams started doing athletics when she was in primary school, but only in 2018 she started getting involved in the sport competitively. She attended the Western Cape Sports School and did not yet realise how much potential she had until she competed for the school and received her Western Province colours. Adams says that sports keeps her disciplined, focused and driven. “I don’t just do the sport, live it. Athletics defines me, it takes me to limits I did not know I could reach.

Athletics allows me to focus on myself and develop into both a great athlete and as a person,” she said.

At the tender age of 18 Anastasia is already coaching and inspiring others, a future professional athlete and definitely one to keep an eye on.

She mostly gives a hand to the athletes who struggles with certain categories, but also helps with sprints, fitness training and motivational speaking.

Training others is therefore also part of personal training for her, as she finds it difficult to do pull ups, which is one of her biggest challenges.

Pushing her body beyond her limits serves as an added challenge. This is often something that holds many athletes back, but she lives by making the impossible, possible. Her goal for 2019 is to compete at varsity level, representing the University

Die samekoms is oudergewoonte op Wesfleur Park aangebied. Die vroeër wedlope vir seuns o/13 is deur Dwayne Minnies oorheers met nie-amptelike tye van 24.66 sekondes in die 200m en 11,51 sekondes in die 100m. Maar dit was nie net Minnies se dag nie, want in die meisies o/12 afdeling is daar ‘n nuwe vonds ontdek in die vorm van Lieschen Roberts van Mamre Primêr, wat gou stof in haar teenstanders se oë gehardloop het. Kyle Doyle, `n graad 5 leerling van Saxonsea Primêr, het ook die baan aan die brand gehardloop en skoonskip in sy afdeling gemaak.

By die pas afgelope Metro Noord atletiek byeenkoms, wat op Saterdag 16 Februarie in Parow plaasgevind het, het Atlantis Primêre atletiek skole span derde geeïndig na Table Bay en Durbanville Bellville, wat as algehele wenner van die byeenkoms aangewys is.

Volgens spanbestuurder, Gary Markus het Atlantis het baie goed presteer en bo alle verwagtinge 11 goud, vier silver en 18 brons medaljes by die byeenkoms verower. Na afloop van die byeenkoms het die Suid Afrikaanse Olimpiese atleet van 2016, Alyssa Conley, twee paar hardloopskoene aan Dwayne Minnies en Lieschen Roberts oorhandig as aansporing tot beter tye in hulle volgende byeenkoms wat Saterdag, 23 Februarie in Coetzenburg, Stellenboch plaasgevind het.

Alle kwalifiseerders het op die dag WP kleure ontvang, waarna hulle teen die ander streke sal meeding vir toelating tot die Provinsiale span van die Weskaap.

Atlantis klop Wynberg in nael-byter DAVID ROSSOUW p Saterdag 16 Februarie, kon Baggy Blues se kaptein, Kurt Julius, net toekyk hoe sy opponent van Wynberg Krieket klub, die loot wen en besluit om eerste te boul.

Met baanbladtoestande gunstig vir boulwerk, is die Baggy Blues vanaf die eerste boulbeurt onder druk geplaas en hulle was vroeg al in die moeilikheid toe hulle drie vinnige paaltjies verloor het.

Lukas Damonse, Rodger August, Jevon Cloete en Marchillo Bruintjies het tot die redding van die Baggy’s gekom, en die telling tot 87/7 geneem. Die laaste drie kolwers het hulle paaltjies vir net sewe lopies verloor, wat aan Wynberg net 35 boulbeurte gegee het om hulle opponente terug te stuur kleedkamer toe vir ‘n skamele 94 lopies. Met `n teiken van slegs 95, het Wynberg vanuit die staanspoor die lopies gejaag, maar is vinnig deur die Baggy draaiers, Kurt Julius en Eldine Goliath tot orde gebring.

Met die toetrede tot die aanval het Julius en Goliath onmiddellik vrugte afgewerp deur vyf vinnige paaltjies in te oes. Die toevoeging van die snelbouler Areldo Meintjies, het die paaltjies verder laat kantel en Wynberg knie-

diep in die moeilikheid op 85/8. Met vyf boulbeurte oor, moes Wynberg 10 lopies vir ’n oorwinning aanteken. Maar met die vurige boulaanval in die laaste paar boulbeurte was hulle fondamente geskud en is hulle uitgeboul vir slegs 91 lopies Danksy Cloete se 22, August se 20 lopies, die onspeelbare Meintjies, bygestaan deur die draai aanval van

Julius en Goliath, kon die Baggy Blues hul tweede agtereenvolgende oorwinning behaal, nadat hulle teen Macassar en Yorkshire vasgeval het. Met hierdie oorwinning is die tuisspan weer terug in die prentjie vir die trofee van afdeling 1C van die WP Krieket-unie.
