Mamre takes a stand against police brutality

hat started off as a peaceful protest, marching to end marginalization and the lack of service delivery, soon ended with shots fired and several forms of police brutality. Several days earlier, on Thursday 30 July 2020, the community of Mamre came in their masses to stand in solidarity with the victims who were arrested, beaten, and shot with live ammunition during the Gatvol protest that happened days earlier. The protest aimed to address marginalization and the lack of service delivery in coloured communities. The movement was supported by many communities in Cape Town, where they managed to shut down the city for a day. The group who appeared in court on 30 July was assisted by the Human Rights Commission, as it was considered a

case of the violation of human rights. Community member of Mamre and Atlantis exercised their constitutional right to protest, as per section 17, 1996 of the Constitution, but it was allegedly violated by the local police. “The Government are not seeing us, and when we break our silence, they want to respond with violence and lock us up. The City of Cape Town and the provincial government has not responded to the incident. If they do not listen, we will go again and keep fighting until they treat our people properly,” protesters chanted.

PHOTOS: JOHN SEPTEMBER Chairperson of the Mamre Residents Association, Jo Cooper, said that the community wants justice, they want everyone who has been involved in the brutality to be investigated and removed from the police station. “This is not only a fight for Mamre, we are fighting for all communities who depends on the protection of this police station,” Cooper said. AFR: Women of Atlantis rise as one

O

ALLISON ADAMS

n 9 July, exactly one month before National Women’s Day, the women of Atlantis raised the bar and started c e l e b ra t i n g their own. A m e l i a Milligan (pictured r i g h t ) , founder of the initiative, put a call out on a local Facebook group to see whether any of the ladies would be interested in joining her network. “My plan was to create a private group, where we can express ourselves, vent, share advice, celebrate, and support one another,” she says. The huge number of responses took her by surprise. “I looked at it and thought: ‘Wow! This rocks!’ And that is how the name, Atlantis Females Rock (AFR), came into existence. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction,” she smiles. Milligan, who initially hoped to reach at least twenty people, was pleased to see more than a hundred women join on the first day. By day two there were 300 members and, within a week, over a thousand women have joined AFR. Earlier this year, she started documenting

her own journey on a page called Amelia’s Chronicle. It was from this personal experience that she wanted to create a platform where more women could freely express themselves. “But first, I needed to create a safe space for them to do so. So often, we tend to hide our voices, or we underplay our talents because we are afraid.” Since the group’s inception, there has been a massive flow of positivity and support amongst the women. With a membership of over 2000 now, a successful clothing bank and food drive has been set up to help those in need. Several focused groups were also created on WhatsApp, including a team who offers counselling to those facing hardships. Milligan says that, it is in times like these that one realises what is truly important in life. “The world is facing one of the biggest pandemics ever. And from the ashes of devastation, rises this amazing spirit. Our women have realised that we have been living too far apart from each other. And that, individually we are great, but collectively we are a force!” And evident to the wide reach of women power, AFR has also inspired women from Oudtshoorn to start their own group called Soul Sisters.”

CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 MAYOR’S JULY CITY COUNCIL ADDRESS Important Highlights for Residents:

• I want to extend my condolences to all the families, friends and loved ones of all those who have passed away from COVID-19 over recent weeks. • National government must listen to the calls of the hospitality, tourism, wine and other major sectors. These industries are able to open safely but remain mostly locked down and restricted. Any business that can open safely should be allowed to do so. •

A R56 million City property is to be transferred to Province to further develop the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (SEZ). By taking this step, thousands of job opportunities will be unlocked and billions will be added to the regional economy over the next 15 years.

The City is making land available in Khayelitsha for the building of a private hospital. We are pleased to be driving progress for the community.

Communities are called on to report those who try to invade land or destroy property. Attempts to invade land are threatening housing and human settlements projects to the value of R1,3 billion. Last week, the land for a R50 million housing project was illegally invaded in Makhaza, undermining the rights of 420 families who have waited patiently for a brick and mortar home. Attempted invasion at Blueberry Hill housing site in Eerste Rivier also threatens to undermine 1500 beneficiaries. The City is doing everything in its power to combat illegal invasions, and we will keep standing up for the overwhelming majority of law-abiding residents.

• •

The City is ready to oppose the SA Human Rights Commission court application for the common law right to protect property to be declared unlawful. The SAHRC is asking the High Court for an interdict preventing landowners from removing empty, unoccupied structures as a means of protecting property from invasion. The commission also seeks the voiding of all existing court orders permitting the City to protect specific sites from illegal invasion. This will set a dangerous precedent and goes far beyond what the Constitution allows. I am grateful to all the City staff, the service providers, and our partners in provincial government, who have worked day and night to ready health facilities, ensure that testing facilities were easily accessible, distribute thousands of support packs for small businesses to re-open safely, provide food aid to thousands of residents in need, and adapt the way we work so that we can continue to deliver services.

Progress is possible, and we can overcome the hardships we face as One City Together.

Robinvale Spurs verruil sokkerballe vir kos-potte

A

RICARDO ADONIS

Die verbod op plaaslike sokker en alle gepaardgaande aktiwiteite bring mee dat spelers DISCLAIMER: IMPACT NEWS subscribes to the Code of Ethics and Conduct for South African Print and Online Media that prescribes news that is truthful, accurate, fair and balanced. tans op hul eie moet oefen, wat veel makliker gesê as gedaan is.
