PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Greetings, Hopyard Farm Homeowners!

I hope you’re enjoying your summer so far. It’s hard to believe that school is starting again! Good luck to all of our students in King George and those who are departing for college! We wish all of you a successful academic year!

Welcome new homeowners to Hopyard Farm! We have a very active homeowners association and hope you’ll consider becoming part of a committee. There are five to choose from including Backyard Wildlife, Communications, Covenants, Pool and Recreation (Events), and Finance. If you’re interested, please contact Debbie Sutton in the community center to pick-up an application! It’s a great way to meet your neighbors and support the community.

At our last Board Meeting we discussed renaming the Pool and Recreation Committee to an Events Committee because there was confusion about what that committee does. This committee plans all of the community functions – they are not responsible for the pool or clubhouse rules. If you haven’t already done so, please plan to attend the next event – it’s a great way to meet new friends and to socialize with fellow homeowners!

With school starting again, please remember to watch for children entering and exiting their school buses!

As a gentle reminder, please drive with care through the neighborhood and keep Hopyard Farm a safe community!

A friendly reminder for those of you who regularly walk your pets – please remember to pick-up after them so others may enjoy their walks, too. Your Board appreciates your thoughtfulness and so do your neighbors! We kindly appreciate the efforts from those of you who already do so!

Our next quarterly meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 20 at 7:00 pm in the community center. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. I look forward to seeing you there.

Your Pool & Rec Committee thanks you for coming out to our summer events and promises some fun happenings for the fall & holiday season! Mark your calendars and join us for: Oktoberfest Beer & Brats (adults 21+) on Saturday, October 22nd and our Halloween Bash on Saturday, October 29th (fun for all ages!). Check out the official invites in this issue. We want to thank everyone for your RSVPs! It is very important for us in our planning process and how we use our funds for each event.

The Events Committee is always looking for new members and/or volunteers to help make our events a great success and fun for all. By bringing our neighbors together to socialize and get to know one another better, we cultivate a greater sense of community and camaraderie.

KING GEORGE PARKS & REC– Remember, Take a Day to Play!

School, and an abundance of things to do! It is hard to believe! The youth are back in school, school-year routines are beginning to take shape, fall colors will soon arrive; and activities are cranking up. As the youth are returning to school, parents in need of before and/or after-school care may want to check out the Play It Smart program offered at each of the elementary schools. Fields will be filled with youth and adults participating in soccer, football, softball, baseball, field hockey and lacrosse in the form of leagues, scholastic, club sports or tournaments. Anticipated are several hundred to 1000+ citizens participating in practices and games throughout the County’s parks and school fields during the Fall months.

Youths not interested in sports may occupy their time in non-sporting events whether it is in the before/after school programs, gymnastics, tot/toddler programs, dance programs, art classes and other enrichment programs offered through Parks and Recreation, Smoot Library, YMCA, Caledon State Park, local businesses and/or churches.

But for everyone interested, young to the young-at- heart, there are several special events that are offered in the Fall season. While some are geared to the young, others may be geared to the over 21 crowd; somehow they all tend to encourage family participation. The Fall Festival is the largest and longest running community event.

Celebrating 58 years, this second Saturday in October event (October 8) starts off with its annual parade. See approximately 100 units travel Route 3 from the Courthouse area to the entrance of the King George High School. For more information on the Fall Festival, visit their website at www.kgfallfestival.com Meanwhile, at King George High School, the morning is bustling converting the parking lot into an active area filled with food vendors, games and amusements, displays and a variety of information booths. Inside the school: crafters will be setting up their wares.

At 10:00a.m, this area will start buzzing with people checking things out and awaiting the parade’s conclusion. By 12:00 or 12:30pm anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 visitors have descended upon the grounds. The smell of sausages, bar-b- que, hamburgers/hotdogs and funnel cakes fill the air; all about the grounds patrons will be entertained with live music; and permeating throughout are the joyous sights and sounds associated with fellowship.

Other special events taking place in King George: Friday, September 9 – King George County Parks and Recreation holds its annual Back to School Family Dance. Lots of activities, dancin’ and fun at the Citizens Center.

The langa's In this issue of this great new magazine, the Hopyard Voice, we introduce you to a very unique family living under some very unique circumstances. Please meet the Langa family.

When looking for a new home they adored the Hopyard neighborhood and were one of the first residents while most of the surrounding land was still in farm use. They find the people here to be great neighbors and friends and especially are fond of the great job the new HOA Manager, Debbie, is doing. Nicole works tirelessly helping her husband Constantin live with a very debilitating disease. Their six year old son, Traian, also helps out in his own special way giving his dad the heart-felt love needed for the best quality of life possible.

A recent graduate of kindergarten, Trian has earned his yellow stripe for his white belt in Tai Kwon Do karate. With the discipline, physical fitness and skills that come with karate, Trian will be a terrific asset to his dad in the future, and will surely make him proud.

Constantin worked for the Federal Government at the Department of Homeland Security before his disability took him away from his career. Constantin suffers from a hereditary recessive genetic disease known as Wilson Disease. The disease prevents the liver from metabolizing copper in the body. Copper plays a key role in the development of healthy nerves, bones, collagen and the skin pigment melanin.

Copper is primarily ingested through our food and water flowing through copper pipes and excreted through the bile, a substance produced in the liver. With Wilson Disease, unmetabolized copper spills out into the nervous system and makes its way to the brain where is does significant damage causing excess saliva as its first symptom. As the disease progresses speech skills are lost along with experiencing cramps, tremors and loss of mobility. Since the disease is so uncommon it is rarely diagnosed by family physicians; even specialists have a difficult time identifying the disease 6 - Hopyard Voice - September 2016

accurately. But after six months of testing the diagnosis was confirmed. Constantin has been going to John Hopkins Hospital for the past six years undergoing treatments in attempts to remove the excess copper from his body. In the past two years he has been undergoing chelation therapy for the copper and other excessive nutrients, however, the treatments have very unpleasant side effects. Some of the therapy is designed to retrain the brain to do what it used to do before it was so badly damaged. Constantin regularly undergoes a combination of physical, aquatic, hippo (horse) therapy as well as electrode monitoring of the brain, neurofeedback, acupuncture, acupressure, modified yoga and weight training.

Wilson Disease has taken away most of Constantin’s ability to speak to where most people could understand him. Living with him, his family is able to understand some of what he tries to say. The family has developed their own form of sign language in order to better communicate. Technology also benefited Constantin as he uses Speak It on his I pad.

Coming soon, October 1, there will be the second annual big Walk On Wilson (WOW) event to bring awareness to Wilson Disease. The first walk turned out to be the largest walk in the United States for any disease. The local walk will be very family oriented and dog friendly. It will be held on the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail (DRHT) and will help raise money for research on the disease. Please show support for your neighbor and come on out for an enjoyable stroll with your family and other neighbors. Is There A Bear In Your Back Yard?

By Allen Easterly There just might be a black bear in your yard. If so, he’s probably feasting on those delicious seeds you’ve put out for the birds, rummaging through your trash for table scraps, or munching on some dog or cat food left out for your pet.

While King George County is somewhat urbanized, there are still bears that come down from the mountains every summer and some pass through the county, though none are thought to live here. Most are in search of food after spending a long winter in a den or are young males seeking to establish their own territory, which can cover as much as 290 square miles. With bear populations increasing throughout the Commonwealth, encounters with Ursus americanus is increasingly more likely. But there is little to fear. Despite popular public opinion, black bears are not the ferocious people eating monsters of the silver screen. If you happen to get a glimpse of a black bear this summer, consider yourself one of the very lucky few. Just respect the bear’s space, do not approach it, leave it alone and enjoy what may be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

A fully grown black bear measures about four to seven feet in length and stands about three feet high at the shoulder when on all fours. A male bear can weigh from 100 to 500 pounds, being lightest in the spring after leaving the den and heaviest in the fall after gorging on acorns and other foods prior to entering his den for the winter. They can put on 100 pounds of fresh fat in just a couple weeks. Females are considerably lighter at only about half the male’s weight. For their size they have tiny round eyes. Black bears have thickly furred rounded ears; retractable claws; thick, rich black fur; and a long snout covering a mouth full of bone-crushing teeth that you probably won’t get to see. Bears usually travel alone with the exception of a female caring for her cubs. The best time to see a bear is dawn or dusk, but they will travel at any time of day or night.

Breeding season is another time when you might see more than one bear together. Every other year between June and August the female will accept a male for breeding. In January 7 - Hopyard Voice - September 2016

or February she will give birth to one to four babies while in her den. Each tiny bear cub will weigh only a half pound or so but will grow rapidly. They will stick with mom for about 18 months before they head out on their own and mom breeds again. During the first year about one in five cubs will fall victim to bobcats, coyotes, domestic and feral dogs, foxes and even other bears, especially mature males. Once a bear has grown to adulthood it has no natural predators other than humans. When the cubs have reached three years old, they’ll start a family of their own and live about 25 years.

For the most part, bears will avoid people. Confrontations between bears and people are usually the result of well intentioned folks feeding bears to the point they associate food with people. They can be quite destructive when they want more food and can cause a lot of damage looking for it.

The best way to avoid conflicts with bears is to avoid feeding them. In fact it’s against the law in Virginia to feed bears at any time, even inadvertently. This law is on the books as much to protect the bear as it is to protect people and their property. A destructive bear that has lost its natural fear of people often must be destroyed. That’s a terrible waste of a magnificent animal just because someone was trying to be nice to the critters. When you see a bear around your home and want to protect it, the best thing you can do is not give it access to food. This might mean take down your bird feeder, feed pets indoors, keep trash locked up in a garage or shed until pickup morning, or put up a temporary electric fence around ripening fruit trees. All of these measures only need to be taken for a few days. When the bear realizes there is no food, it will move on. Talk to your neighbors and convince them to take the same action so the bear moves well out of the neighborhood. I hope you’re one of the lucky few to see a bear this year. Enjoy!

DID YOU MISS THE LAST MEETING? There will be a binder in the HOA Office for homeowners to view pending Exterior Alteration Applications during normal business hours. Last quarter the Covenants Committee received 24 applications (See page 12 for Approved Applications).

The Backyard Wildlife Management Committee installed 522 pollinator plants.

Finance Committee reports a Positive Cash Flow of $20,000. However, delinquent accounts continue to be an issue with over $30,000 in outstanding dues.

We are in need of volunteers for community events. Please contact the P&R Committee.

Thoughts were discussed about a yard sale and community clean up event with a roll off dumpster available for residents to dispose of unwanted items.

The P&R Committee reported over 100 guests at the Ice Cream Social in June.

Items planned for this Fall are: Beer Tasting Event - October 22 Family Halloween - October 29 The Pool and Rec Committee and Covenants Committee are in need of members. Please consider donating your time and talents.

Repairs to the Fitness Center equipment are in the works.

Goodbye Summer….Welcome Fall!

Well, we must say farewell to our pool until next year. The pool will officially close on September 5th. As our community continues to grow I can already see that I’d like to make some changes for pool registration next Spring. I hope to have a few evening and weekend hours available for registration. I know many of you work out of the area and it’s hard to get there during office hours.

I want to thank you for being so welcoming and patient as I settled into my position here at Hopyard Farm. Please know that as your Community Manager I look forward to working with you. I’m here to help when possible and to resolve any issues that you may have. As a part of my job I conduct Inspections. These are not meant to be critical, they are meant to help keep YOUR Community and home values up.

Also, the less I have to send out violations the more it will help keep your assessments down!

Fall is the prime time to work on your lawn after a hot summer. I’ve included some tips below from Virginia Tech.

Late August-Early September: Put down Crabgrass Preventer when the grass seed is germinating.

Mid-Late September: Aerate; Top Dress with ¼-1/2 Inch of Compost (Leafgro or a bio solid/compost combination); Apply Lime (Pellet). Lime can be applied any time the ground is not frozen.; Apply Grass Seed (September 15-October 15). Apply Fall Lawn Fertilizer if you are using a starter product-WATER, WATER, WATER! October/Early November: Apply Fall Lawn Fertilizer (30 days after if this is your second application); Once temperatures stay below 85 degrees, apply board leaf weed control (Consider using a Spray product.)

November: Rake or Mulch Leaves-Do not rake up grass seedlings. Apply final application of lawn fertilizer (30 Days after October application.)
