Thank you to everyone who has corrected the maintenance issues on your home from our Comprehensive Inspection. One of the biggest issues that the inspector found was mold/mildew/algae on the siding. You may want to watch out for this again in the Fall months and it’s sure to return next year. It’s very important to take care of your investment and inspections aren’t meant to be critical. They are meant to protect your investment. Fall is the time you will want to Core Aerate and Seed your Lawn. For best results add a layer of compost after aerating and before seeding and remember to water.

It is hard to believe! The youth will be back in school in a couple of weeks and the school-year routines will begin taking shape. As the youth are returning to school, parents in need of before and/or after-school care may want to check out the parks and recreation Play It Smart program offered at each of the elementary schools. Fields will be filled with youth and adults participating in soccer, football, softball and baseball, in the form of leagues, scholastic, club sports or tournaments. Anticipated, are several hundred to 1000+ citizens participating in practices and games throughout the County’s parks and school fields during the Fall months. Youths not interested in sports may occupy their time in non-sporting events whether it is in the before/after school programs, gymnastics, tot/toddler programs, dance programs, art classes and other enrichment programs offered through Parks and Recreation, Smoot Library, YMCA, Caledon State Park, local businesses and/or churches. But for everyone interested, young to the young-at-heart, there are several special events that are offered in the Fall season. Quarterly HOA Meeting Notes from July 19 , 2018

Submitted By : Melissa Endrizzi, Hopyard Resident and Publisher of The Hopyard Voice Email: melissa@endrizziadvertising.com

Board present minus Dan Sweeney, President. 13 resident attendees present. RESIDENT QUESTIONS: -Has the board ever considered monthly HOA dues vs. quarterly? Would this help our collection efforts? Response: No. Monthly payments are allowed and accepted if that what residents choose. -Have we ever considered a handicap chair for the pool? Response: No. It is not required and there isn't a need. COMMITTEES: Covenants: Not present. Backyard Wildlife: Dee reported that the committee meets every Spring and Fall. Yard of the month is currently going on so gets those yards looking beautiful! Getting ready to plant trees this Fall. Pool and Rec: Not present. Finance: Chris Werle reported that we ended the 2nd quarter in the black. 24 Delinquent accts equaling $39k.

82% of those are 120 days past due. Equity is $43k and ideally we want that at 10-20% so we fall a little short. Net cash reserve is $91k. We budgeted 30 new homes for this year and by the end of June we were at 14 so projections on track to meet or exceed that number. MANAGEMENT REPORT: Debbie stressed the need for everyone to sign up for the new Town Square. Current eblast from her have gone away and this is the only form of direct communication from the HOA. Current sign ups are about 90 residents. Pool furniture continues to be replaced. Several start up items were needed at the pool and were replaced at the beginning of the season. Baby pool was patched but will be fixed next year. Bird slides worked! Playground mulch was done. Two rain sensors were installed on the irrigation system. Hopefully soon the gazebo will be painted. Exterior doors and the hallway by the gym need to be painted. Melanie reported that the October meeting needed to be rescheduled and they are working to determine the date. And Section 4 by the gazebo has broken ground.

Mooned By A Moth? One of the largest and most beautiful moths to fly the night sky in forested areas of King George County is the luna moth. It is one of the largest silk moths in North America. This moth is light green with a maroon border along the front edge of its wings. The four wings can spread as far as 5½ inches. Each wing has a round transparent spot surrounded by rings of yellow and blue. These eyespots appear similar to the rings around the planet Saturn. These moonlike spots are the basis for the moth’s name. The rear wings taper into long narrow curling tails. The antennae appear comb like on all four sides. The male sports larger antennae than the female and is more yellowish green. The female is blue green in color. If you’re not outdoors to see one you might catch sight of an animated version on television commercials for Lunesta. Their image was also used on U.S. postage stamps back in 1987. Actias luna is a nocturnal critter that usually breeds after midnight. In Virginia, most will breed a couple times each summer. The female extends a scent gland from her abdomen that releases a pheromone into the air to attract any nearby male. Once attached, the couple will remain that way until the next night. The next night the female will begin laying one to six oval white eggs singularly or in groups, attaching them with a brown adhesive to both sides of plant leaves. She will continue laying batches of eggs over the next few nights until she has produced 150 to 250 eggs. When hatched in eight to 13 days, each egg produces a bright green caterpillar between two and 3½ inches long. These attractive crawlers sport horns, armored knobs and the occasional stinging spine. Beware the stinging spines and bite of any caterpillar. I was bitten on the knee by one as a young teen and the bite quickly swelled to softball size. I still have the scar from this rare encounter. Other than human knees, the caterpillars feed on beech, hazelnut, cherry, hickory, pecan, persimmon, willow, white birch, sweet gum, walnut and sumac leaves. Because their numbers are relatively few, their feeding activity rarely causes any problem to the host plant or tree. The caterpillars have to eat plenty and store up reserves for the rest of its life. Once the caterpillar enters the cocoon stage it doesn’t feed again. The caterpillars will eventually turn a reddish color when they’ve had their fill during a month or more of heavy feeding and right before development of their cocoon. The cocoon is a single layer of spun silk wrapped in leaves. The pupa is anchored to a silken pad at the rear end of the cocoon by hooks. Kind of like the insect world version of Velcro.

by Allen Easterly

The luna moth will cut itself free from its cocoon during a warm mid morning. After a five minute struggle to release itself from the confines of the cocoon, the moth will hang from leaves, stems and trunks of trees or plants while their wings are unfurled from less than an inch long to the full five inches or so. The unfurling process lasts 30 to 45 minutes as the moth pumps fluid into the veins of its wings. Several more hours remaining stationary allows the wings to harden enough so it can maintain flight. They’ll be ready to fly by evening. The females probably won’t use their new wings until after they have mated; but the males have already been on the wing for a couple days scouting for that lovely pheromone moth perfume. The moths emerging in the spring will be a deeper green than those emerging later in the season that will be a more yellowish color. Luna moths are often attracted to certain ultraviolet light waves similar to those emanated by some street lights. This interferes with their normal breeding cycles and can cause a significant reduction in their numbers in urban areas. The caterpillars also serve as host to many insect parasites. Even the eggs and pupae are tasty snacks by a wide variety of predators. Owls and other night insect hunters can take a large number of adult moths. I used to have a bug zapper in my back yard and eventually quit using it when I noticed a lot of luna moth wings on the ground. The ultraviolet light attracted them and then night critters feasted on them. These moths are not completely defenseless. The caterpillars will rear up when threatened as if to strike like a snake. They will also make a clicking noise with their mandibles and regurgitate fluids that ward off potential diners. I know I wouldn’t be interested in eating anything that is throwing up in front of me. They are also colored well to blend into their surroundings. Allen Easterly is a free lance writer, Virginia Master Naturalist and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Complementary Work Force Volunteer who has been studying area wildlife for over 55 years.

Summer Harvest Recipes

BLUEBERRY LEMON BREAD 2 cups all-purpose flour + 1 tablespoon divided (spooned & leveled) 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 cup oil coconut, vegetable, or canola 2 tsp. vanilla extract Lemon Glaze: 3/4 cup confectioners sugar

REFRIGERATOR PICKLES 4 thinly sliced cucumbers 1 large sliced red onion 1 large sliced green pepper 1 T salt

2 cups white vinegar 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 t celery flakes 1 t red pepper flakes

Mix cucumbers, onions, peppers and salt; set aside. Put vinegar, sugar, celery flakes and pepper flakes in a pot and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add 2 handfuls of ice until melted. Place all veggies in canning jars. Pour mixture over veggies and store in your refrigerator. Will keep up to 2 months. Makes 2-3 quart jars.

2 eggs 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup plain greek yogurt or sour cream Zest & juice of 1 lemon 1 cup blueberries 1-2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9x5 loaf pan with cooking spray and set aside. In a small bowl, toss the blueberries with 1 tablespoon of the flour and set aside (this helps to prevent the blueberries from sinking). In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In a separate bowl, mix together the oil, vanilla, eggs, sugar, greek yogurt, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, just until smooth. Do not overmix or your bread will come out tough. Lightly fold the blueberries into the batter. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan and bake for 50-60 minutes. The bread will be finished when a wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.* Once bread is finished, remove from oven and allow to cool for about 10 minutes in the loaf pan. Remove from loaf pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Once bread has cooled, whisk together the confectioners sugar and lemon juice. Start with one tablespoon of lemon juice and whisk well. If your mixture is too thick, slowly add up to one more tablespoon of lemon juice. You want the glaze to be thin enough to drizzle, but thick enough to set up on the bread. Using a spoon, drizzle the glaze on top of the bread. The glaze should harden up a little more after about 15-20 minutes. *If bread begins to brown too much on the top, tent with aluminum foil. I used some foil for the last 10-15 minutes of baking, *Store in an airtight container on the counter for up to five days. Bread will freeze well for up to two months.
