LETTER FROM THE

editor

You’re getting married? Congratulations from everyone at ULTIMATE BRIDAL! We’re

here to help you along the way to planning what will be one of the biggest days of your life and hope you will find inspiration within the pages of this issue. In this edition, we showcase prime settings for a mountain wedding, local wedding stories, and gift ideas for your wedding party. This year, we’re doing something new and theming the issue around the great outdoors. With this in mind, our featured pieces focus on backyard weddings and mountain destinations. Be it on a farm, at a camp, or in luxurious tents, this outdoor trend is one that we’re very excited to see more of! As always, I would like to take a moment to thank all those who have contributed to and supported this magazine. It’s through your quality of work and dedication that we are able to produce this fantastic resource and distribute it throughout the Peace. To our talented wedding designers who worked with brainstormed ideas to create beautiful mock-weddings, the photographers who captured and shared real moments, the writers who passionately researched and advised, the advertisers who continue to allow our magazine to be free, and the brides and grooms who let us share their stories: we could not have done it without all of you. You can find articles, vendors, and advertising information online at ULTIMATE BRIDAL MAGAZINE . CA. As always, we welcome ideas, feedback, and suggestions for future issues. We hope you enjoy reading and find inspiration within the following pages.

As for a budget, you can stick with any amount you choose, but it’s generally recommended to look for gifts within the $75 to $150 range. Also, remember that what works for one person might not always work for another. While it’s easier to give everyone the same thing, you can also opt to buy different gifts for each person. Our gift picks of the year are ones that stand out as being long lasting and can be personalized to suit your own wedding party. Best of all, they are all easily acquired online or locally and won’t break your budget!

the right

bouquet for your day Every bride wants her wedding day to be a memory of happiness and celebra-

tion that she can cherish forever. The bridal bouquet is a superb way to communicate your wedding’s theme and your own personal tastes. Choices you make for colours, types of flowers, and arrangement style can complement your dress, show off your personality, and give a sense of the tone for the rest of the wedding. There are endless possibilities to shape a bouquet as unique as you, which can make pinpointing the right one a bit challenging. It can almost be as tricky as selecting your wedding dress! In this edition, we’ve picked out our favourite trends of the year and worked with local florists to create beautiful bouquets to inspire you.

say

M A R R I E D I N T H E M O U N TA I N S

You’ll be on top of the world

when you say “I do” in the mountains! From a rugged, wilderness wedding to a fairy tale ceremony on the banks of a shimmering lake, a destination wedding in the mountains has it all. Not constrained by time of year, you can even say your vows in your own winter wonderland. Mountain weddings offer something you simply cannot find in the hustle and bustle of city life. There is a peace and serenity that surrounds you, letting both you and your guests engage on your special day. You can slow down and relax as you look over brilliant landscapes of mountains, lakes, and forests with the one you will spend the rest of your life with. There is no need to create intricate backdrops to make your mountain wedding perfect. Nature has done that already: snow-capped mountains, lush valleys, thick forests, sparkling lakes, and fields of flowers. All these things create a unique and beautiful setting for a wedding you will never forget and one your friends and family will hold with them always. Mountain resorts and lodges take great pride in utilizing local experts and their own wedding planners to use everything that these locations have to offer. This takes away the stress of planning and makes it easier to make the big decisions.

Grand lodges provide that perfect combination of rustic and romantic. The elegance and beauty that comes hand-in-hand with the idea of a perfect wedding is coupled with the feeling that nature is still all around you. And it’s not some arduous climb to pull off your perfect mountain wedding either. In fact, these destination weddings can prove to be far less stress than your average, at-home affair. With remote locations all over, you can avoid those three-year booking times from that well-loved and well-used venue down the street, and find your own, magical setting closer to home than you might think. Not only that, but with the wide array of options out there, your wedding can fit into any budget. You could rent an entire island, taking in the experience with friends and family alone, or you could stay at a nearby campground, creating a truly personal and outdoors feel. Show off that trademark beauty of the mountains to friends and family, near and far. Have your perfect day, when you want it, where you want it, surrounded by all the people you love. And make it a day you, and they, will love too. As inspiration for destination weddings, we’ve selected a handful of beautiful mountain locations close to our region!

Mountain destinations aren’t just for small weddings either. Many locations offer venues for both the ceremony and reception that cater to 80, 100, and even 200 people or more. And that magic that captures you during your vows is not lost when it’s time for dining and dancing!

P Y R A M I D L A K E R E S O RT Pyramid Lake is situated just outside of Jasper, in Jasper National Park. The biggest draw for wedding ceremonies is Pyramid Island, located on free-touse, Parks Canada land. While this location is open to anyone, the variety of backdrops makes it the most popular option for an outdoor ceremony. Pyramid Lake Resort hosts one wedding a day, showing their focus is only on you. This resort is open all year, offering chalet-style guest rooms with views of both Pyramid Lake and Pyramid Mountain. If you want to add even more fun and adventure to your wedding, the resort also offers boat and canoe rentals, bike rentals, biking and hiking trails, and has a picnic and barbecue area. For those ready to brave the cold on their wedding day, you can indulge in ice skating, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, and even sleigh rides. If you just want to sit back and relax, you can enjoy their ten-person outdoor hot tub. The Pines restaurant in the Resort is committed to serving regional and sustainable choices and have been awarded a Gold Award for both their lunch and dinner menus from the Alberta Hotel Lodging Association. The restaurant handles all the catering needs for weddings both large and small, from reception trays to buffets, to plated meals. They also cover either option of a host or cash bar and easy to follow price guides. Their signature and most popular dish is the beef tenderloin plated dinner.

It is the only resort in the entire region on the south-facing side of the mountains. What does this mean for your wedding day? Long, warm days and exceptional lighting for all of your photos, whether on the golf course, near the river bank, or any of the other stunning vistas the location has to offer. For an outdoor wedding, the perfect location is the gazebo. Framed by lush trees, overlooking the valley, and completed with a brilliant backdrop of mountains it is not only beautiful, but functional, with the ability to host parties up to 250 people. Silvertip boasts exclusive “Mountain Wilderness Fusion” cuisine. They use fresh ingredients from the region and inspiration from nature to tempt your taste buds and leave you wanting more. With two full time restaurants on site, catering for the receptions is covered in any number of ways; from hors d’oeuvres, to displays, to plated dinners and buffets. You can even create your own buffet with a variety of simple options. The resort also provides the option of either a cash bar or host bar. Not only is the menu inspired by nature, but so is the architecture. Their resort is highlighted by Douglas fir timber and handcrafted with local rundle stone. They take the beauty and majesty of what nature has given and taken it to a whole new level. While the resort is open to the public, with two restaurants open during events, Silvertip Resort is dedicated to a very personal touch. Don’t be surprised if the wedding planners start calling you “their bride,” because they put a big focus on your special day to make it everything you dreamed it would be. OVERLANDER M O U N TA I N L O D G E The Overlander Mountain Lodge is a scenic, 35 minute drive from the Town of Jasper. This allows for the lodge to be removed from all the hustle and bustle of the captivating tourist destination while still being close enough for you and your guests to enjoy everything it has to offer. Overlander is not a big-chain hotel. It is small, stylish, and independently run, with coordinators dedicated to making every part of your wedding perfect. Their goal is to ensure your special day is unique, memorable, and truly reflects your desires and personality. The lodge, which was originally built in 1963 and has been completely renovated over the years, offers five room types to make your stay comfortable and magical. These include beautiful mountain and garden view rooms, which are highly recommended for the bride and groom. Separate from the main lodge are the Miette rooms, cabin rooms, and kitchenette rooms, all of which allow pets. In addition, a number of 2–3 bedroom chalets can be rented to accommodate families or larger groups of friends. a party of family tradition

M E L I S S A & D U S T I N F O L K Married August 31st, 2013

Every good love story has its own meet-cute, and for Melissa and Dustin, it all began with a dance at the Lions Den Pub (now The Den Pub & Carvery).

Melissa was studying nursing at the Grande Prairie Regional College when one night, after a few too many wobbly pops, she decided to show off her country moves all by herself. Dustin walked up and asked if she needed a partner to dance with. The couple was engaged seven years later in a rather elaborate production, where Melissa was led to believe that she needed to pick Dustin up at their home and take him to an appointment because his truck was in the shop. She arrived at home, late as usual, and started honk-

ing the horn, texting, and calling him, all with no response. Finally she marched up to the front door and burst inside only to find the kitchen table covered in roses. At first, Melissa panicked, wondering if she’d ruined some sort of surprise, but when Dustin appeared and got down on one knee, she realized that the roses spelled out “Will You Marry Me.” Just over a year later, the couple were married in a down-home, farm-style wedding in Fort St. John. Much of the wedding was filled with family touches and elements of Melissa’s Ukrainian culture. With the ceremony taking place on the September long weekend, they embraced the fall season and incorporated rich colours into the décor, including flowers which were grown by family members. The bride and her two brothers had Ukrainian family

tattoos inked before the wedding to show their bond and pride for their heritage. Melissa’s gown had a family touch as well, with her sister-inlaw sewing a blue petty coat with the couple’s names and wedding date embroidered on the hem.

Everyone dined on a pork roast provided by On Fire BBQ, but what really brought the meal together was the Ukrainian family effort by Melissa, her mom and aunts, who all got together and made cabbage rolls and perogies for all 300 guests.

The ceremony took place at Charlie Lake Church, but the real fun began when the 300 guests headed out to the tent set up in a friend’s field for the reception. Tulle covered with twinkle lights lined the inside of the tent and rows of burlap had photos clothes-pinned to them. The centrepieces were composed of a trio of Mason jars in varying sizes, lined with burlap and red ribbon, and filled with bouquets of sunflowers, zinnias, and dill.

The party carried on into the wee hours of the morning with a fireworks show. The seven piece Ukrainian band, the Playboys from Edmonton, made sure the music had people dancing. What mattered most to the bride and groom was that every single guest had fun, with no pressure to go home early. In fact, many of the guests parked their campers in the field to spend the night. Melissa and Dustin wanted to host a party no one would forget—and it all came together perfectly.

It was 2011 and the couple had just bought an acreage north of Sexsmith, were starting to settle into a new life, and looking at getting a puppy. After finding a dog breeder they liked, Layton felt it was the perfect opportunity to ask Bobbie to marry him and he secretly brought the pup up from Calgary.

Choosing a theme was simple for the couple. After a two year engagement, they were married in a simple, rustic, country-inspired ceremony.

One day, he blindfolded Bobbie and told her he had a surprise. Then he brought in the cute, fluffy Newfoundland puppy with the engagement ring tied around its collar. Layton knew the dog alone would be a big surprise, and with all the fur, the ring wasn’t easily

The ceremony took place at Sorkenville in Teepee Creek, and with soft pastel colours for the wedding party and a few pairs of cowboy boots and belts, it was the perfect setting for their outdoor country wedding. 250 guests joined them in the celebration, with everyone doing their

part to make it a success. The two feel very lucky and grateful for the support from their families, who were all on board helping out. Everyone came together to help make Bobbie’s vision come alive and she says the whole process, spread over the two years, felt effortless.

All of their hard work leading up to the big day made everything worth it. The two describe it as the perfect day, surrounded by loved ones, including their son Easton, who was almost one-yearold at the time.

While the focus was very much on their union that day, Bobbie and Layton truly did consider it a day for both of their families to share in. It wasn’t just their wedding day, it was for everyone.

It’s not every day that all of your friends and family, all of those people most important to you, have the chance to get together. Even better, for Bobbie and Layton, it was all about celebrating the new journey they’d embarked on together.

Surrounded by Mason jar chandeliers, hay bales, handmade barn wood backdrops, pine slab centre pieces, and hundreds of feet of burlap, everyone enjoyed a BBQ reception that featured beef and pork that Bobbie’s father raised for the occasion.

A R A B E S Q U E & Q U I N N M C C A S H I N Married August 18th, 2012

Looking back on her wedding,Arabesque McCashin admits that having an open mind was the best thing she and Quinn ever did.

Initially she never would have thought of having a camping wedding, but after giving her fiancé a bit more credit than she initially had, the two thought outside of the box. Their wedding ended up being perfect. Arabesque and Quinn were married in Grande Cache two years ago— one day before their 10 year anniversary—but their journey together began years before, when the pair started dating during their time at Strathcona High School in Edmonton.

Eight years after their first date, Arabesque was busy interviewing in various cities for her medical residency. She tried several times to convince Quinn to come spend the weekend in Toronto with her, but he refused. When she arrived she called him and, in a teasing fashion, told him all about her beautiful hotel, her room on the 39th floor, and the view overlooking an outdoor hockey rink. Little did Arabesque know that Quinn had actually come to Toronto to surprise her and, as they spoke on the phone, he was already on his way up to her room, knocking on the door, and proposing then and there. The engagement was short, with six months of planning for their memorable wedding. They knew they wanted something casual and relaxing

and fun for all of their family and friends, and the idea of a camp wedding fit perfectly. Arabesque spent a lot of time researching various sites before settling on Camp Hide-A-Way, a lesser known spot tucked away near Grande Cache. They held the reception there, but were married on the second platform lookout of Sulphur Gates, a spot where two rivers, the Sulphur and the Smoky, converge. With a gorgeous mountain landscape backdrop, 60 guests joined them for the weekend, which meant plenty of time together to create memories, laugh, and enjoy themselves.

Of all the memories from that weekend, what sticks out most for them is the reception. A canoe filled with ice chilled a seemingly endless supply of beer and wine and guests drank out of personalized Mason jars while enjoying a catered meal of chicken, ribs, cornbread, and Saskatoon berry muffins, along with a trail mix snack bar. Picnic tables decorated with burlap, lace, wild flowers, and tin dishware were set up in a big oval field on the edge of the forest. As the sun set, little white lights, strung up among the trees, twinkled in the twilight, and Mason jar candle holders flickered. Eventually, a beautiful dark sky, empty of clouds filled up with stars and they danced the night away.

Taryl grew up in Valleyview

near Mark’s aunt, uncle, and cousins. They were all close friends, with Taryl hearing countless stories about Mark, who lived in Newfoundland. The two finally met when Taryl, 10 at the time, was on vacation in Newfoundland. Eight years later Mark and his brother moved to Alberta and he and Taryl had more time to get to know each other. Eventually, as it so often happens, friendship evolved into something more. They were together for about two and a half years before Mark proposed. It was a normal night in for them: they were playing a card game where each person has a card stuck to their forehead and they’re trying to figure out what it is. The two were just killing time and Taryl had no idea that when she won her prize it would be a ring.

Their proposal story is very much reflective of their style—as was their wedding—which Taryl describes as cozy and casual with some vintage flair. Not even the rain showers throughout the day could stop Taryl and Mark and their guests from enjoying the day. The ceremony and reception was held at Taryl’s parents’ acreage in Valleyview. Wide, open space meant that many of their guests, who made the long journey from Newfoundland, could camp out and save money on a hotel. The family reunion was particularly sweet, given how close Taryl is with Mark’s family. There were no set colours for the wedding, but as planning proceeded a pattern with a softer palette of blues, greens, purples, and yellows

emerged. Beautiful wooden place settings were accent with decorations of re-purposed family items, such as the doilies, plates, and jars Taryl found at her Baba’s house, books from family members, and napkin holders made with her great grandmother’s button collection. Taryl and her mom handmade a lot of the decorations including the bunting, which Taryl admits took the longest, but overall, it all came together easily. Popeye even made an appearance in the table decor.

It was a day filled with good company, good music, and great food prepared by the Valleyview United Church ladies. Taryl and a friend spent a few weekends baking all the homemade desserts, while Taryl’s Baba and a family friend made the cabbage rolls; and Mark’s Mom and Nan handled the dressing, a traditional Newfoundland stuffing. It was important to them that the meal featured food they love, the kind that represents their heritage and where they come from.

Taryl’s unique cocktail length wedding dress was accented with a blue polka dot belt and matching shoes, and the best man even sported Popeye cufflinks, another example of the fun, quirky touches that were added throughout the wedding.

Even though the day itself was busy, rainy, and over too soon, there was still plenty of time to dance, smile in the rain, and take in the celebration with family and friends.

COVER PHOTO CONTEST WINNER

Dara Enns,

a local Grande Prairie wedding, portrait, and commercial photographer, has won this year’s Ultimate Bridal cover contest! For Dara, who is interested primarily in capturing people, the things that make them connected to each other, and the ways their relationships translate visually, wedding photography is an excellent fit.

dara enns PHOTOGR APHY

Dara’s love of photography began after she was married, when her husband bought her a film camera. She would shoot a lot of films and started carrying a notebook with her to record what succeeded and what didn’t. This developed into her sole hobby and, after some time and workshops, she was asked to shoot events and weddings. After taking four years off to raise her children, Dara came back to her hobby to start a career in photography. Although she still has and uses her film gear, she made the transition to digital cameras for her new business.

“We’re crafting something together that’s beautiful and we all contribute to that. It’s not just me. I just get to be there when it happens,” Dara says. For her, it is about making the couple comfortable by talking to them, asking them questions, playing with what makes them laugh, and finding the moments when she can capture “whatever their love looks like, whether it’s kind of intense or it’s funny and quirky.” She cannot recall the last time she had a bad experience at a wedding but has an abundance of good stories to tell: “I feel like we have the best clients in the universe. And I’m so thankful for every one of them. I’m still astonished and grateful to do this.”

“I love working in Grande Prairie because I feel that for young, female entrepreneurs who are dedicated to a craft, it’s quite a unique time and place,” says Dara, “There are a lot of opportunities for people who have a vision and are willing to work hard.” While Dara incorporates her vision into her work, she wants her clients to look at their pictures and say, “That looks like us. That looks like how we love each other.” Since her job requires her couples to trust her and work with her, Dara does not think of herself as an artist but, rather a crafts-person.

One of her favourite things is when couples who think they aren’t photogenic come to her. “They’ll be a beautiful couple, but the first thing they’ll say is, ‘We’re nervous, we don’t photograph well together.’ So I love the first moment when I can show someone an image where they look absolutely magical. It feels really good to give that to someone who’s not necessarily comfortable being photographed and then they leave feeling amazing.” For the future, Dara wants her business to grow but she doesn’t grow beyond the point where they can feel personally connected to her couples and clients. While she wants to stay small and personal, Dara wants to expand to photographing different and unique weddings.

Step into a garden wedding that reinterprets the prominent vintage theme with inspiration from Victorian tea parties. Natural light of a summer evening falls warmly on this outdoor reception, giving the venue a romantic glow. Shimming gold, soft pastels, and

ivory linens are complemented with lovely table settings, mismatched teacups, and romantic bouquets in mossy green vases. Secluded under tree branches filled with crystals and flower-filled birdcages is a vintage velvet sofa which marks the cake table. A French macaron tower in pale tones of green and pink with gum paste roses perfectly complements the theme. Informal luxury can be found in every detail of this midsummer wedding.

The bride is dressed in a delicate, fit-and-flair wedding dress from the Martina Liana collection. Lace, tulle, and chiffon create a romantic, vintage look and delicate details for a timeless appeal.

Balanced on top of a men’s Madani 14kt rose gold and tungsten band is a 14kt two-tone, white and rose gold engagement ring with a 1.53tw, and matching rose gold band.

A tower of French macarons decorated with gum paste roses on top of a clean white cake, rest on an ornate golden cake stand.

The bride is accessorised with freshwater pearls and Pandora gold drop earrings. To keep with the soft tones for the mid-evening reception, her styling was kept simple with a rosy cheek, blush lip, and dramatic lash and her hair is kept flowing in gentle waves.

The cake table station consists of a vintage velvet sofa and coffee table underneath a canopy of branches decorated with strands of pearls, crystals, and floral filled birdcages.

Rose filled bouquets, birdcages, cherubs, and candle-holders give each centerpiece an elegant, garden look. Each place is set with a gold charger, scalloped plate, and teacup.

An icy palette of light blue, silver, and white give this contemporary wedding a cool elegance. To set this reception apart and modernize

it, the dĂŠcor includes the sleek silhouettes of white orchids, uniquely square dinnerware, frosted stemware, and glittering sequin tablecloths. Glass and silver sparkle in the natural light on every table and the table settings are carefully edited to achieve a minimalistic style. Complementing the bold lines of the dĂŠcor is a trendy, geometric pattern that is used in a trio of banners and stationery. Perfect for the cooler months, guests can warm up with a beverage from the espresso bar, which replaces the traditional cake table.

The sweetheart, Bonnie Bridal gown is tailored away from usual embellishments. Detailed ruching covers the bodice and flows down into the asymmetrical waistline while the skirt is gathered to one side. The bride is accessorised with sterling silver and quartz jewellery by Trudy Gallagher, a stainless steel Pyrrah cuff, and a Jade Daniels hairpiece.

The head table is lined with frosted stemware which mimics the look of ice.

A halo, 19kt white gold engagement ring is coupled with a Max Strauss 14kt white gold, diamond wedding band. These balance on top of a men’s titanium and sterling silver ring with satin finish and comfort band.

A blue patterned backdrop gives an interesting texture to the head table where a light box covered in white branches and silk orchids sits.

TOA ST W O RT H Y T I P S F O R STO CK I N G U P

Your big day is marked on the calendar

and there is already so much to do, but don’t fret the details of the drinks. Lisa Hagen of Southgate Liquor has tapped into her 20 years of experience bartending for weddings and offered up her expertise, so you can stop worrying and get to the important details that matter most.

HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED?

PICKING YOUR DRINKS

When calculating how much alcohol is needed for your wedding, you first need to know how many people are going. Approximately 5 drinks will be served per person (1 drink per person, per hour) in a general ratio of 50% beer, 30% wine, and 20% cocktails. The following chart roughly breaks this down for your guest list (wine and hard liquor are based on 750ml bottles):

Stocking up on beer is relatively simple. Pick the beer brands that your guests would want and always have 1 ‘lite’ beer available.

G U E S TS

TOTA L

BEER

WINE

LIQUOR

50 100

200 drinks 500 drinks

11 x 12 packs 21 x 12 packs

15 bottles 30 bottles

3 bottles 6 bottles

650 drinks 26 x 12 packs 750 drinks 32 x 12 packs 1,000 drinks 42 x 12 packs

38 bottles 42 bottles 60 bottles

7 bottles 9 bottles 12 bottles

125 150 200

If one of your close family members or wedding party might like something specific, treat them by getting a bottle of their preference and let the bartender keep it stashed away. Make sure to give your guests something to toast with by following our wine recommendations below. As for serving the wine, one option is to leave bottles open on the table for guests to serve themselves. This is effective and easy if you don’t have enough ProServe certified staff.

W I N E R E C O M M E N D AT I O N S

LINDEMANS

Traditionally, you will have 1 bottle of white and 1 bottle of red per table, but you may want to provide 2 different types of red wine for guests to choose from. We recommend a Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon for variety.

This is a good Australian wine with consistent quality between years and bottles, making it a solid choice. The grapes might not be 100% Australian but the prices are competitive.

The following are Southgate Liquor Store’s three most popular brands that offer both red and white wine within a $7–15 price range:

S I G N AT U R E C O C K TA I L S When choosing a signature cocktail, consider the theme of your wedding, the colours of the bride’s dress and accessories, the time of year, and your family heritages. The possibilities are literally endless: a fruity sangria, spiked lemonade or iced tea, or something completely your own. Avoid mixes that require too many different liquors, as it can be pricey to stock the ingredients. OUR PICK : SOMETHING BLUE

1oz Citrus Vodka + 1oz Blue Curacao + (equal parts) Pineapple Juice + Lemon Juice

+ Lemon Wedge Garnish

MIXED DRINKS

WHEN TO GET IT

A F T E R T H E PA RT Y

Choosing what kind of alcohol to offer depends entirely on what you and your guests want. It is a great idea to purchase mixing ingredients like cola, Sprite, ginger ale, club soda, Clamato, orange juice, and cranberry juice. For an average wedding size of 125, you will need about 25 2L bottles of mix total. These mixing beverages are also good to have for those guests not wishing to drink alcohol or who can’t.

Once your wedding date is set, you should start putting together your alcohol cache as soon as possible. The advantage of going to private stores is that they usually give wedding discounts and can keep an eye out for sales if they know what you’re looking for. It is also easier afterwards to return unopened merchandise. Another consideration is to purchase your drinks in bulk quantities, which will lower your expenses per drink. Decide what you want to do with the extras after the reception; you might want to keep them for another occasion!

Make sure to organize driver services after the reception. This should not be overlooked. Ask cab companies or driver services for a bulk discount and to be on stand-by at your venue. Make sure your guest are aware of these arrangements at the beginning of the reception; this way your guests will be more relaxed about having a few. There are also a number of volunteer and fundraising groups who can be hired to transport your guests home in their own vehicle!

SKINNY GRAPE

VIÑA MAIPO

This wine is a low-calorie alternative from the United States. The flavour is very fruit forward with a compelling taste to want more. The price is very competitive and as a bonus the bottles are quite pretty for display on the tables.

This Chilean wine producer was founded in the Maipo Valley, renowned as Chile’s most famous wine growing region. These award winning wines are a bit more per bottle than others, but they’re well worth the cost.

laws&marriage

R O M A N C E : T H E C O U RT S L E AV E T H AT TO Y O U

Rumour has it that you’re engaged and about to embark

on a life together as a couple! Like most soon-to-be married couples, you probably have a personal definition of marriage, but do you know how the Courts view your upcoming nuptials?

Courts leave the fairy tales to you and instead focus on the logistics. Specifically, that you’re entering into a legally binding contract with your spouse and that they’ll be charged with enforcing it. How romantic! Here are a few legal basics of marriage you should know before your big day! WHO CAN GET MARRIED?

You must be over 18 years old or, if 16–18 years, must have parental consent. Also, the Federal Civil Marriage Act¹ says that same sex marriage is legal, however religious officials can refuse to conduct if not in accordance with their religious beliefs. Y O U ’ R E E N G A G E D, N O W W H AT ?

You’ll need a marriage license from an Alberta registry office like TheLicenceCentre.ca. Present your ID and, if you’ve previously been married, your Divorce Certificate. Don’t procrastinate, as the license is only valid for 90 days. MARRIAGE LICENSE, CHECK .

Sounds obvious, but the marriage must be voluntary. This isn’t Vegas; remember that you can’t be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You also can’t already be married, so single, widowed, or divorced. Another sticking point is that you can’t be lineally related (grandparent, parent, child) or a sibling (blood or marriage). Avoid these pitfalls², and you’ll be fine. T I M E F O R A C E R E M O N Y.

Remember, it needs to be before a registered clergy (religious ceremony) or a marriage commissioner (civil ceremony) with authority to perform marriages in Alberta. You also need two credible adult witnesses and a declaration of vows. In rare circumstances, marriages can be annulled if there are signs of alcohol, drugs, duress, fraud, or mistake³.

SETTING GROUND RULES.

Prenuptials or marriage contracts outline what couples wish to occur during the marriage or upon separation. They can be entered into prior to or during the marriage and often deal with money arrangements and/or future plans. They can modify the Matrimonial Property Act (MPA) and, therefore, each party must have their own lawyer and acknowledge that they may be losing rights under the MPA. W H AT ’ S I N A N A M E ?

Once married, you may keep your surname, hyphenate, or change it. If you change it, make sure to update your ID. You do not need to do a legal name change but should update your records with most organizations. Most will want to see a marriage certificate. A C Q U I R I N G S T U F F.

You’ll likely accumulate or purchase property which is typically considered joint property. Upon separation and divorce, the Courts may divide property under the MPA. Previously owned property (prior to marriage) is exempt, although the increase in value is divisible. Inheritances, third-party gifts, or money from awards or settlement for damages are exempt. Again, increases in value are divisible. T H E B I G S T U F F. Y O U H AV E O P T I O N S .

If you choose to buy a house with your new spouse you’ll be asked how you wish to register the house: either as Joint Tenants or as Tenants in Common. Joint tenancy has an ‘automatic right of survivorship’ and, in the event that you or your spouse passes away, the other spouse automatically inherits the home. Tenants in common allow you to leave your portion (be that 25%, 50%, etc.) to whomever you designate in your will. WE CAN HELP!

Although you’re on your own for the fairy tale, a lawyer can help you navigate the non-romantic legal waters. Whether it is for family law matters or real estate transactions for that lovely new home, a lawyer can help! This is general advice and does not constitute legal advice. Consult a lawyer on all legal matters. ¹ Civil Marriage Act, SC 2005, c.33, ² Marriage (Prohibited Degrees) Act, S.C. 1990, c.46, ³ Marriage Act, RSA 2000, c.M-5

homeownership

WRITTEN BY:

Pam Lobban

B U D G E T I N G T O W A R D S Y O U R F I R S T H O M E Dominion Lending Mortgage Broker

Transitioning from being a renter to

a homeowner is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make throughout your lifetime. It can also be a stressful experience if you don’t plan ahead by building a budget and saving prior to embarking upon homeownership. Budgeting is a core ingredient that helps alleviate the stress associated with money issues that can sometimes arise if you purchase a home without knowing all of the associated costs—including down payment, closing expenses, ongoing maintenance, taxes, and utilities. The trouble is many first-time homeowners fail to carefully think about their finances, plan a budget, or set savings aside. In this society of instant gratification, money problems can quickly escalate. The key is to create a realistic budget based on your goals. Budgeting offers a step-by-step formula for figuring out how to best save your hard-earned money to invest in homeownership. Start by listing your household income, then your household expenses, and review your spending habits. All of this can be done on a pad of paper or on a computer spreadsheet. Keeping receipts for everything that you purchase will enable you to accurately keep track of where your money is going each month so that you can review and make necessary changes to your plan on an ongoing basis. Examine all areas of your life from entertainment to the type of food you buy, where you buy your food and clothes, and how and where you travel. Also look at your spending personality and make necessary adjustments. Are you a saver, a splurger, a spontaneous shopper, or a hoarder? Become smarter with your money and avoid impulse buying. Budgeting provides you with the opportunity to re-evaluate your needs and wants. Do you really need the magazine subscriptions, the gym membership, and all the other things you may spend money on each month? Although everyone needs some “me time” to wind down, could some of that time be spent in cost effective ways, like taking a walk or reading a good book you borrowed from the library?

The following are three top tips to help you prepare for the purchase of your first home: 1 ) S E T U P A S AV I N G S A C C O U N T:

You can deposit a predetermined amount into this account each pay period that you will not touch unless it’s absolutely necessary. This will enable you to put money aside for a down payment and cover closing costs, as well as address ongoing homeownership expenses such as maintenance, taxes and utilities. 2 ) S AV E U P F O R B I G -T I C K E T I T E M S :

As you accumulate money in your savings account, you will be able to also save for specific purchases to help furnish your home—avoiding the buy now, pay later mentality, which can have a negative impact on your credit when you’re seeking mortgage financing. 3) FIND YOUR TEAM OF PROFESSIONALS:

When you’re getting ready to make your first home purchase, enlist the services of a licensed mortgage professional and a real estate agent. These experts are invaluable to you as you set out on the road to homeownership because they help first-time buyers through the home purchase and financing processes every day. They will be able to answer all of your questions and set your mind at ease. A mortgage professional has access to multiple lenders, and can help you get pre-approved for a mortgage so you know exactly what you can afford to spend on a home before you head out house hunting, while a real estate agent will be able to match your needs with a house you can afford. Both parties will negotiate on your behalf to ensure you get the best bang for your buck. And, best of all, these services are typically free. They will also be able to refer you to other reputable professionals you may need for your home purchase, including a real estate lawyer and home appraiser. If you can set your budget solidly in place before you head out home or mortgage shopping, you will be far more prepared to purchase your first home.
