In our featured piece, we look beyond Alberta and travel down the west coast of British Columbia to gorgeous destinations just a few steps from the ocean. Our ever exciting photo shoots paint two very different pictures of equally stunning weddings achieved in collaboration with local vendors: one, an inspired starry night set-up full of light and glittering gold; the other, a whimsical, outdoor affair emphasizing a bohemian look and eco-friendly message. BLING FOR HIM
When it comes to accessories, it’s more than just making sure his colours match the theme. Take a little extra time to consider how to make his personality shine through. From superhero t-shirts under formal wear to cowboy hats, there are a number of little things to let him be himself. Consider a pattern to his tie, or embroidery on his pocket square. If he thinks bowties are cool, forego the standard look and let his personal style shine through!
Another way to make your groom shine is by taking special care when it comes to those little flourishes. Tie pins, cufflinks, and the ring are all little things that might not be noticed from afar, but knowing you took the time will make them all the more important to him. These are the perfect pieces to add his own flare to his wedding style.
Even if it may be difficult to visually represent his personality, a pair of personalized socks is a great way to remind him that you know exactly who he is. Get a special message written across the top of each and he’ll have it with him all day.
Serve beer and sliders as a midnight snack
Engrave a tie pin with an image relating to his interests. Find a pair of crafted cufflinks that make you go “that’s so him.” When deciding on the rings, encourage him to be an active participant and find something that makes him say yes!
F E E D H I M H I S FAV O U R I T E S When it comes to weddings you can’t get through the day without snacks, treats, and a variety of foodstuffs. When planning what to serve take into consideration some of your groom’s favourite things to eat. Even if they aren’t traditionally served in a manner that would fit in with your theme or style, see if there are other ways to prepare or serve them. Chances are you can find a way to get his absolute favourites included during the main event, giving him one more thing to be happy about during the big day. But it’s not all about hors d’œuvres and the reception meal. During the day both the bride and groom need little things to keep them going. Keep your groom at the top of his game and make sure he has some tasty snacks throughout the day. Before the ceremony it’s best to avoid foods that may stain or drip. Focus on items that can be popped into the mouth in just one bite such as unsalted nuts, fruit, or cheese trays. And if you want to go for something a little more personal, bite-sized versions of his preferred treats will make his day that much more special.

The date is set, the plans are being made, but what can be added to make that big day just as special for your
husband-to-be? Quite a lot! From groomswear, to accessories, to his favourite things to eat, there are more than a few little things that a bride can do to make her groom feel just as special. Or, at the very least, keep those cold feet toasty warm all through the wedding toasts and beyond.
UNIQUE BOU TONNIÈRES

Traditionally a boutonnière is a floral decoration worn on the left lapel, typically consisting of a single flower. However, over time, a number of amazing boutonnières have been created. These unique accents can be a wonderful talking piece, or allow you to show off more of your groom’s personality.
Every bride has an emergency kit to get her through her big day though what’s inside may differ here and there. But when it comes to the groom, there are a number of little things you can put in his very own survival kit to make that day go just a little smoother for the both of you.
With an outdoor wedding, you can make a boutonnière out of items you would find in the woods, from bits of trees to berries or nuts. For something more colourful and fun, there is the option of folded paper decorations, such as pinwheels or origami flowers. For the bird enthusiast or a fisherman, try your hand at a boutonnière made of feathers. These days the possibilities are rather endless. If you can pin it to a jacket, you’re in business!
The kit can be on the smaller side, covering the basics of Advil, “cold feet” socks, mints, and a little bottle of his favourite liquor to help calm the nerves. Or, you can go all out and add in a variety of other little gifts or items that you know he would like or find useful; a new watch or stylish pocket watch can be both a charming gift, and a nice reminder to be on time.
THE GROOM’S CAKE The groom’s cake originated in Victorian England, but the tradition has continued on. While the traditional wedding cake leans towards a lighter, whiter style, the groom’s cake offers a great deal of variety and flair. One of the best parts about this cake is that you can pick your groom’s favourite flavour or bring another popular taste to the dessert table, while showing off your man with its design.

The groom’s cake is versatile and can take on a number of styles to demonstrate your fiancé’s personality and tastes: his favourite sports team, a hobby he enjoys, a mini-landscape, or a scale model of his dream car. The options are wonderfully vast when it comes to planning and designing a cake just to showcase your groom. The cake can be served at the rehearsal dinner, which adds a spotlight on your finacé before the big day. It may also be served at the reception. In this case, the cake is often served at a separate table than the wedding cake and offers another dessert flavour for guests to sample.

E A G L E’ S N E S T R ET R E AT The Eagles Nest Retreat is located on the southernmost tip of Galiano Island, on a 20 acre estate, surrounded by 200 acres of park and protected land on the three inland sides. With an entire kilometre of ocean front views and trails leading through 75 acres of wilderness it is a picturesque venue to host your wedding. The Retreat is perfect for small, simple, and intimate weddings. For your reception, the marquee tent, with its silk ribbon ceiling and soft lighting, has a whimsical atmosphere. The artistically designed and distinctively crafted home, built almost entirely of cedar from the property, has been featured in “Northwest Best Places.” The beautiful surrounding landscape and the unique character of the Retreat create something truly magical. Natural and quiet surroundings will help you relax and unwind in preparation for your big day. The romance of ocean views and raw wilderness are the perfect setting for wedding photographs. The retreat is a five minute walk to the Mount Galiano trail head and ten minutes from the nearest beach, providing a variety of landscapes to explore or act as natural backdrops that will lend themselves to stunning and memorable pictures. Not only does the site have a sauna house, but the hot tub has an incredible ocean view. If you’re lucky you will spot some of the local wildlife. Eagles, whales, racoons, sea otters, sea lions, ravens, and deer all make appearances near the Resort. The intimate property does not have a restaurant, but the full size kitchen has everything you may need to cook a grand dinner, including a herb garden right outside. Although, the large maple table only seats twelve people the local market and the pub are only five minutes away by car.

As a photographer
who loves weddings, Allana had always joked that she could plan a different wedding for herself for any month of the year. No matter the date, she wanted to make sure the wedding reflected her and Derek’s personalities. They had met as teenagers, snowmobiling with mutual friends, meeting again as adults when Allana was at a friend’s stagette. That sparked a relationship. A few years later, while on a family vacation in the Dominican Republic, Derek proposed on the beach at sunrise. Fourteen months of planning resulted in a day that reflected what was most important to them. They held both the outdoor ceremony and reception on family property where they often spend weekends enjoying nature. Allana’s father helped her build a mantle. Derek made plank-
and-stump benches. Her mom helped with the bunting. Her aunt did the flowers, incorporating buttons from Allana’s grandmother’s collection in the bouquets. Her bridesmaids helped her make the cake and cupcakes. The family pitched in to make pies. In many respects it was an old-fashioned family affair. Old-fashioned carried into the decorating, as Allana loves everything vintage. She got ready with her bridesmaids at an antique vanity in an old-styled tent, wearing coral gingham shirts she had personalized by embroidering. The tent offered fantastic light for pictures. The men got ready in one of the small rustic cabins on the property. They created an outdoor church setting by using four wooden church pews and homemade benches. An old wooden wine barrel served as a

She recounts these moments with just the two of them as among the day’s most memorable.
became votive and tealight holders. Even the cake sat on an antique tin inside a floral wreath atop a thick round of wood. A borrowed log bar was decorated with bunting and antiques, with drink specials listed on an old-fashioned chalkboard.
After the ceremony, the guests enjoyed popcorn and lawn games while the bridal party took formal pictures in the forest on the property.
Allana’s vibrant colour scheme carried from the bunting to the ribbons draped above the dance floor, to the flowers, the cupcakes, and ribbons in the flower girls’ hair. That everything blended so beautifully was a testament to Allana’s visual talents as a photographer.
The reception was held in a grouping of four center-pole tents that looked like a country fair. Antique and rustic touches abounded. The head table backdrop of a pallet wall was spray-painted with doily patterns, and decorated with colourful flag bunting, flowers, and antiques. Centrepiece bouquets sat on slices of wood, and smaller wooden pieces

encing another culture. While working in Edinburgh, she met Kelvin, who not only worked at the same hotel, but lived on the same street. Walking to work together led to dating, and when the relationship deepened, Kelvin followed Nicole back to Canada on a work visa.

The greenhouse was a vibrant backdrop at a time when the Peace Country spring was still brown, and the greenhouse’s benches and planters created the perfect setting for the intimate ceremony. Some draped ribbons, the only decorating they did apart from rearranging, added a cheerful splash of colour.
They soon knew they wanted to get married. He officially proposed by attaching her ring to their Boston terrier’s collar, then popping the question. What followed was a whirlwind two weeks of planning, necessitated by needing certain paperwork done before Kelvin’s visa expired so he wouldn’t have to return to Scotland. Nicole remembers it as a stressful time that she got through thanks to help from friends.
Every detail had significance. The yellow daffodils were Nicole’s favourite, and purple heather symbolized Scotland, as did the tartan bouquet wraps. She created centrepieces for the banquet using teacups from her extensive collection.

classic pearls, and a birdcage veil. Wingtip pumps and red lipstick completed her look. Her bridesmaid’s ensemble had a similar aesthetic, but was more simply styled. The men wore classic three-piece suits. Kelvin’s tartan tie was another nod to his Scottish roots, while his groomsman wore a bright yellow bowtie that popped with the bouquets. Nicole also had three friends serve as adult flower girls, and asked them to wear whatever they chose. She was thrilled when they all showed up in shades of pink. Their beloved Boston terrier was their ring bearer, his bowtie making him look as if he’d put on formalwear.

And because they had the reception at the Acropolis, the belly dancer became their entertainment, with Kelvin good-naturedly joining the dance when urged. Nicole and Kelvin proved that you don’t need a big budget to create a unique, memorable wedding. Their one extravagance was to return with a second photographer in June for a portrait session when the greenhouse was in full bloom. The end result was a wedding both intimate and meaningful, but also a lot of fun. And they have the pictures to prove it.
Because it was a small wedding, they decided that a casual reception at a local restaurant would work best. Nicole made low centrepieces, using her teacup collection, which enhanced the table but didn’t impede the

They met while working in the same store and
began dating several years later. After Sunny realized he wanted to marry Camellia, he spent months planning a proposal. He took her to the restaurant, Hummus Brothers, site of their first date, and with the owner’s help, set up a private room with flowers and champagne. When the owner conspired to get Camellia to the room, Sunny played guitar and sang a song he’d modified for the occasion, then proposed. Thirteen months later they were married in a traditional Sikh ceremony. Like all Sikh celebrations, it was a vibrant, multi-coloured event. The bride wore an elaborate gown of red and white, with a gold necklace, earrings, and tikka (forehead jewellery), gold bracelets with red and white choora (traditional bracelets). She carried lilies. The groom wore a traditional achkin (long jacket with rounded collar), and a red
turban. Gold detailing on both was echoed in the groomsmen and bridesmaids’ outfits, also traditionally styled. The effect was like a summer garden in full bloom. The wedding began two days before the ceremony, as Camellia and Sunny took part in preparations and related ceremonies, in their respective homes with their families. Following custom, Camellia, her female friends and relatives applied henna, Camellia’s being the most elaborate design. Sikh weddings involve a lot of food, including before and during the ceremony, which ends with serving Karah Parshad (sweet pudding). In the lunch that followed, Camellia added decorative touches with a natural motif. Table centrepieces featured wooden baskets, candles, potpourri, and small logs decorated with moss and rocks. The motif extended to their formal photograph session at a nature preserve.

As an expression of their thoughtfulness toward the environment, Camellia and Sunny chose rings from a company that uses recycled precious metals and stones. The traditional components of their wedding made for a long day, so they held their reception the following evening. They exchanged their traditional garb for an Armani suit, and a stunning blue Indian gown with gold skirt and embroidery. Camellia’s bouquet had gotten lost in the whirlwind of the ceremony day. A friend collected flowers from neighbours’ gardens for a replacement bouquet, which she used in photos taken prior to the reception in downtown Prince George.
As is traditional, the groom’s family arranged for decorating at the reception, held at the local Golf & Curling Club. Again, a nature theme prevailed, along with Camellia’s favourite colour, green. Centrepieces were glass vases with pebbles and bouquets of twigs. Trees around the room were hung with twinkle lights. The cake was a splash of blue, topped with peacocks, their tails cascading down the tiers. A sofa and green curtains served as a backdrop. The wedding was a kaleidoscope of colour and joy, but mostly it was an event that united two families. And once all the formalities were done, everyone moved to the dance floor to wrap up four days of celebration with a party. Food, family and fun—all part of a glorious tradition.

An outdoor wedding in the Peace Country doesn’t
automatically mean a vintage or rustic theme. When Janelle chose the Millwood Country Inn for her ceremony, she used the landscaping features and a few floral arrangements to create a “formal garden” motif. Her elegant dress, with a train and cathedral veil, made her a jewel in an ornamental setting. The bridesmaids’ pink cocktail-length dresses and the men’s three-piece suits added to a graceful formal aesthetic. This formality was a far cry from the casual way Janelle and Kevin met, randomly crossing paths in the community. After dating for three years, Kevin surprised Janelle by proposing on a romantic sunset cruise in Vancouver harbour. Eleven months later, on a perfect sunny day, they said their vows and signed at a glass table decorated
by a vase of pale pink roses and white hyacinths. During the recessional, guests threw rose petals from cones they’d been given. They then enjoyed champagne and appetizers, and lawn games for the children and young at heart. Meanwhile, the formal photo session was split between the inn’s gardens and a rural location where a Queen Anne sofa added a unique touch. Continuing the formal theme, they held the reception in the Pomeroy Hotel ballroom. Large, luscious pedestal arrangements of peonies, candles, and twinkle lights behind sheer drapes, all enhanced the classic look. A cascade of pink peonies (which had to be flown in from Holland) also decorated the cake. White tablecloths and chair covers were elegant yet discreetly focused the attention on silver

place settings, votive candles, and pink floral centrepieces. Fuchsia petals dotted the head table. An exotic element, designed for guest relaxation, was a lounging area created from gauzy drapery, sofas, and subdued pink lighting. Inside this unique haven, a stunning ice bar, carved with the happy couple’s names, awaited adventurous guests who could drink a shooter using one of the bar’s ice luges. Or they could enjoy one of three signature cocktails. Above the dance floor stencilled with their initials, a large floral wreath hung like a crown. Leading up to the wedding, Janelle and Kevin had taken dance lessons, so the traditional first dance was a great start to a high-energy evening of dancing to a live band.
The elegance of the day was anything but stuffy. Fun touches were sprinkled throughout, from a “beer cake” for the men as they dressed and embroidered satin makeup robes for the women, to Janelle’s perky fuchsia shoes, the lawn games, and a life-sized cardboard standin of the couple and their dog with faces cut-out for a photo prop. The couple encouraged guests to use a personalized Instagram tag to facilitate picture sharing. And at midnight they held an outdoor “street meat” barbeque. As a send-off, guests formed a sabre arch with sparklers, and the happy couple ran underneath, their smiles as bright as the halo of sparks around them. From beginning to end, it was a day bright with champagne memories.

Having kids undoubtedly
changes many things. For Janell Connors, it kick-started a journey that ultimately led her to her career, a new creative passion and her husband, Ryan. “I was trying to take cute pictures of my kids,” Janell says. “I’d set up my child with teddy bears and stickers on the wall, use a disposable camera, and wonder why they came out so crappy.” The memory makes the professional photographer laugh now. “I thought, ‘I need to figure out this photo thing.’” She started going online, researching and reading photography forums. She bought a better camera in 2008 and immersed herself in the craft.
all the time, says Janell. “We’re just content to be together and flow together nicely.” Ashley Evans found The Tiny Wedding Co online and hired the company for engagement pictures. It was a huge success, she says. They all recently returned from the Mayan Riviera, where the Connors shot the Evans’ wedding. “They are remarkable photographers,” Ashley says. “You don’t find many husband and wife duos that take pictures together. They have completely unique styles, their styles are not similar so you get pictures you never thought would be possible.” One thing they do have in common is an element of artistry in their work, using innovative edits, interesting poses and props, and unexpected locations in their work. “We’re both super creative,” says Janell, “so there’s definitely an aspect of that in our work.”
“I was practicing lots and spending way too much time at my computer, editing images, so I started charging really cheap rates,” she says. “People just kept booking me. When I realized how busy it was I realized I could make a living off of it.” She shot her first wedding in 2009. “It was scary,” she says, “but it went really well.” As Janell launched into the world of professional image-capturing, she was still spending time online, learning from and chatting with other camera aficionados. She struck up a friendship with one she found particularly inspiring. They chatted back and forth for years and finally met up face-to-face in 2012, in Vancouver. A few weeks later, he moved to Grande Prairie. They were married two years later. Ryan Connors has been her partner in life and in their wedding photography business, Tiny Weddings Co, ever since. The couple, who live and work together, has now shot over 20 weddings as a team. It’s not hard for them to be in each other’s space
It’s exciting for those having their photos taken, says Ashley. “You have this idea of what wedding pictures are supposed to be like and they give you those but they also give you creative things you would never even think to look for.” The career means long days and booked-up summer weekends. Why do it? “I like love,” says Janell, smiling. “I know everybody says that but I like the love. I’m always catching my breath and fanning away my tears when the bride’s coming down the aisle, whether I know her or not.” She and her husband also do lifestyle, commercial, and boudoir photography, as well as raising three boys. “It’s pretty much just nonstop from wake-up to sleep,” says Janell. “Your brain doesn’t shut off. It’s all you think about.”

Weddings may not look the same as they
did a decade ago, but they are becoming more flexible. Whether on a mountainside or next to Niagara Falls, elopements are becoming a convenient, stress-free, and inexpensive way for couples to say “I do” without sacrificing romance. Local businesses are even getting involved with pop-up weddings and unique contests aimed at creating something a little bit different. The most important part of any wedding is having a special day to recognize the love between two people. How couples choose to do that is entirely up to them. The world of weddings is changing. It’s becoming less about following traditions and more about celebrating individuality. Wedding planner Melissa St. Pierre knows this. As owner of Pierre & Co. Event Planning & Design, she has integrated this concept into her work. “People getting married want to be with their closest friends and family,” she notes. “A lot are finding it unnecessary to have a large gathering and are scaling back their celebrations.” So, in the fall of 2015, Melissa introduced the
Peace Region’s newest way to get married: the pop up wedding. What exactly is a pop up wedding? “It’s a two-hour, elopement style affair that we’ve created,” she explains. “Basically, we take all of the components of a traditional wedding and fit it into a smaller time slot.” So far, she says, it’s been creating a lot of buzz. Four pop up weddings took place at different times over the course of Friday, September 4th and Saturday, September 5th. Melissa generously donated her own yard as the venue. “I’ve got three acres and a lovely meadow where I’ve always wanted to have a party,” she confesses with a smile. “We arranged for guests to meet at a central location where we picked them up and brought them to the ceremony. When they arrived, they helped themselves to cocktails and took their seats.” During the ceremony, the couple was able to articulate all of the loving words that make weddings so meaningful with the help of an officiant. Once married, the pair ventured off to two stylized photo shoots.

Wedding guests enjoyed refreshments on elegant, lounge-style seating under a tent. When the couple returned, they cut the cake and had a chance to visit with guests. After hugs and well wishes, the two shared their first dance over a stunning LED dance floor. The great thing about pop up weddings is that couples can customize them as much or as little as they like. “One wedding had all white décor with pops of navy for him and coral for her,” Melissa says. “It was a terrific balance between overly girly and overly masculine.” To make things even more unique, Melissa arranged to pick up one of the brides in a blue, 1955 Chevrolet Bel-Air. Anybody can find something to love about pop up weddings. For those planning to get married abroad, a pop up wedding can be a wonderful way to include friends and family who can’t make the trip. For the couple that’s been together a while and hasn’t found time to plan the wedding of their dreams, a pop up one can be an easier but still enjoyable way to celebrate their lives together. In fact, two couples Melissa worked with had been together for over 10 years. Pop up weddings are also great for people with smaller budgets. “You can still get married without compromising the beauty that comes with a more traditional event,” Melissa says. “You’re going to have this huge wow factor without spending $33,000, which is the average price of a wedding in Alberta.” Finances and circumstances almost prevented four local couples from marrying, but luckily, they were able to realize their dreams through more public elopement-style weddings. Thanks to Q 99’s Married on
Main contest, Melissa and Cory, Desiree and Nathan, and Candance and Kimm all celebrated their love right in the middle of downtown Grande Prairie. On June 27th, Lindsay and Kyle Janes were married in another unconventional place: Bud Country Fever. They were chosen from a group of 12 couples that entered the Redneck Garden Wedding contest. In her 100-word entry, Lindsay explained how she wanted to have a special day for her fiancé but could not afford a traditional wedding. “We hadn’t really planned anything until we won. I knew I wanted a country theme, though,” she says. Since they both love country music, it was a perfect fit. For Lindsay, the best part was watching their one-year old daughter, Olivia, come down the aisle. Bud Country Fever Event Manager Kelly Buyar says the idea of having a wedding was a fun way to celebrate the festival’s 20th anniversary. “The community really embraced this idea. Lots of people were talking about it.” Lindsay and Kyle won two VIP passes for the weekend, a gold camping pass, and 20 tickets for their guests. They enjoyed music in reserved seats, complete with a catered dinner in redneck style to-go packages and tableside cocktail service. Kelly says they plan on holding a similar event in 2016, creating a new tradition for Bud Country Fever. Elopement-style events like Married on Main, A Redneck Garden Wedding, and pop up weddings offer people more chances to make their day fit their needs. Weddings should be as unique as the couples that have them. These celebrations may not be the typical way to marry, but they still have the most important ingredient: love.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has a
deal with bridal consultants across the country: the CRA won’t give advice on whether you should choose the strapless princess ball gown in tulle or the sweetheart mermaid gown in lace for the bride’s wedding day, and bridal consultants won’t try to explain the contribution limits to a spousal or common-law partner registered retirement savings plan, how to change your name, or, if you are blending your families, what you need to do to receive or change the Canada child tax benefit payments. KEEP ABOVE GROUND
The CRA does know you should not say “I do” to participating in the underground economy. You may think you are getting a deal by paying cash and avoiding taxes for such things as flowers, catering, or even your dream venue, but it can leave you with no proof of payment or recourse, should a goods or services provider not fulfil their obligations. Not to mention, if you are caught evading taxes, you may face fines, penalties, or potential jail time. Save yourself the trouble and don’t participate in the underground economy. Under-the-table deals undermine the integrity of Canada’s tax system. They deprive the Government of funds for vital programs that benefit all Canadians, including children and seniors. They also provide unscrupulous contractors with an unfair, illegal advantage over those who follow Canada’s tax laws. G O O D B Y E S I N G L E S TAT U S
As for you, now that you’ve updated your marital status on Facebook (so long, single!) and splashed pictures of your nuptials all over Twitter and Instagram (#justmarried #heputaringonit #bigweddinghairdontcare), don’t forget to let the CRA know about your trending marital status. While the CRA doesn’t accept name changes via hashtag, you can update your status on the CRA’s My Account service, or submit Form RC65, Marital Status Change, which can be easily found online at www.cra.gc.ca/forms.
The CRA has reserved a portion of its website for life events like marriage and the changes to your tax situation they can cause. Head to the CRA’s life events page for more detailed information. A NEW HOME FOR YOUR NEW LIFE
Once you’re back from your honeymoon and have written all the thankyou cards, your life as a married couple can really begin. Bring on the white picket fence! If you’ve bought a home together or are moving into a new place, let the CRA guide you through an address change, reporting rental income, or accounting for expenses related to the business use of your home. You may also be able to participate in the Home Buyers’ Plan, a program that allows you to withdraw up to $25,000 in a calendar year from your registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) to buy or build a qualifying home. Not to mention, with the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit, you might even be able to claim an amount of $5,000 for the purchase of a qualifying home acquired in 2015. Blending families can make for a full house, literally! Step-parenting can be busy with the added juggle of school, work, and recreational activities. With so much on your plate, skip the last-minute number crunching and avoid stress by taking advantage of the CRA’s secure electronic services and filing ahead of the deadline. Using online help tools like videos and webinars, the CRA will walk you through the basics of completing your income tax and benefit return, making it easier than ever to file your taxes. Even if you haven’t earned any income in the past year, ensure you receive the credits and child and family benefits to which you are entitled. There is the universal child care benefit, a taxable benefit designed to help Canadian families with the cost of raising children. Parents will receive a

monthly benefit up to $160 for children under six years of age and up to $60 for children ages six to 17. There is also the Canada child tax benefit, a tax-free monthly benefit as well as, the goods and services/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit.
