Your Spring and Summer Fun-Factor Heats Up Right Here At Home By Deanna Kent-McDonald

en•ter•tain•ment

Pronunciation: \en-ter-tān-ment\ Function: noun Date: 15th century Definition: something diverting or engaging Looking to be amused or inspired? Craving the excitement that the lights and sounds of fireworks can evoke? A campfire surrounded by artisans to spark your muse? Perhaps your style is more about the light-hearted laughter that a fire-eater might ignite. Whatever form of entertainment suits your fancy, if you want world class festivities this season, go no further than local. There’s a cornucopia of fun and frolicking all just waiting for you in and around Grande Prairie. As always, there are many reasons to stick around and take part in all the local magic. But unlike other years, 2008 (besides all of the other fabulous seasonal events) also marks Grande Prairie’s 50th anniversary! The fun factor is amped up and there’s no better way to celebrate how alive the city is than to plan to make the local festivals and entertainment events a part of your summer fun.

DUCK DAYS

For some laid-back family fun, (and some fabulous shopping opportunities) don’t miss Duck Days! Beginning June 14th downtown, Duck Days promises fun for the whole family. As the bands play toe-tapping tunes just for you, stroll around downtown and explore the wealth of unique, fabulous merchandise that will be displayed sidewalk-sale style. There will be inflatables and face painting for the kids, displays and demonstrations, a draw to win $1000 downtown dollars and of course plenty of opportunities for you to get GP Rotaract Club Duck Race tickets, which will be held July 20th.

DUCK DAY DETAILS:

Duck Day Downtown will be held Saturday, June 14th. 100th Avenue from 99 Street to 101 Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 10 am – 5 pm. Stroll around and take in the free entertainment!

GRANDE PRAIRIE STREET PERFORMERS FESTIVAL

Recipe for a fabulous Street Performer’s Festival: Mix 30,000 + people, great treats, a few fire-eaters, a couple of contortionists and some jugglers. Blend in fabulous face painters, voracious laughter, magic shows and one larger than life unicycle. Sprinkle a variety of world class entertainers (more than can be mentioned here). Serve outdoors. Enjoy. What began with a dream, some key volunteers, and some daring sponsors has turned into an annual must-see for those seeking world-class outdoor entertainment. With the support of ATB Financial, the Community Foundation of Greater Grande Prairie, the Downtown Association and many others, this energetic celebration has become Northern Alberta’s largest family festival. For three days each July, downtown Grande Prairie welcomes international talent and enthusiastic local audiences. An always changing cast of international characters will juggle, walk tight rope, eat fire, swallow swords, paint faces, twist balloons, dazzle with magic, perform incredible feats of physical strength, and much, much more. It truly must be seen to be believed. With audiences last year of more than 30,000, you don’t want to miss out on the fun!

STREET PERFORMERS DETAILS:

Friday, July 18: 4:30 to 9 pm. Saturday, July 19: Noon to 9 pm. Sunday, July 20: Noon to 5 pm. Taking in the sights and sounds is a totally free experience… but these touring entertainers make their living from generous audience donations. If you appreciate them, reward them. (There’s still room for more food vendors, volunteers and sponsors. Call the organizing committee co-chairs, Clyde Blackburn and Wayne Ayling at 402-1490). accent | 13

CANADA DAY & GRANDE PRAIRIE CELEBRATIONS

Happy 50th Anniversary, Grande Prairie! Cake, a parade, family festivities, fireworks… sounds like a party you don’t want to miss! The city always does some great yearround entertainment. Past events include Heritage Days, Winterlude, Easter Eggstravaganza and Sundays in the Park Concert Series. This year’s annual Canada Day Celebrations will be made extra special as the city of Grande Prairie is celebrating its very own 50th anniversary. It’s sure to be a party to remember.

PARTY PARTICULARS:

June 30th: 8 pm to Midnight - Amphitheatre entertainment June 30th: Midnight - Fireworks over the reservoir July 1st: 1 pm - Canada Day Parade - downtown July 1st: 2:30 pm – Muskoseepi Park festivities Most of the excitement is free, although a small fee may be charged for some of the extra on-site activities. No need to RSVP. Just show up with your red and white party hats on.

BE SWEPT AWAY WITH THE IMAGINATION OF THE GRANDE PRAIRIE LITTLE THEATRE

Entertainment should engage… and also have the potential to sweep an audience away to another place. Grande Prairie Live Theatre provides plenty of opportunities for escape – and participation – with a variety of shows and events.

GPLT SHOW & EVENT DETAILS:

Throughout all the seasons, GPLT wants to entertain you. This spring and summer they offer a Play Series, an International Movie Series, Second Streeters Summer Drama Camps (this fills up fast so register early!) and a Concert and Performance Series that brings in talented Blues and Folk musicians. Last spring marked the beginning of yet another exciting annual event: The Reel Shorts Film Festival which celebrates short films and the film-makers who create them. As always, GPLT provides a magical mix of live theatre and cultural performances to benefit all ages.

For volunteer and sponsor opportunities and for information about the fabulous shows and events you’ll want to be part of, contact Grande Prairie Little Theatre. Phone: (780) 538-1616 Fax: (780) 532-0464 Email: box.office@gplt.ab.ca

GPLT wants you to join the adventure. Every season, local volunteers participate as actors, directors, festival producers, stage managers, technicians, behind-the-scenes set builders, wardrobe/costume supervisors, maintenance people, front-ofhouse, fundraisers and Second Streeter helpers. This list touches only the surface of the kinds of jobs that the vast number of volunteers do for the Theatre.

ROCK, ROLL, & EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN

Both the Crystal Centre and BJ’s, located in the heart of downtown Grande Prairie, offer up some great live entertainment. Because shows, acts and events are constantly being added, your best bet to keep in the loop is to check out their websites. Check out the Crystal Centre on the City of Grande Prairie Website at: www.cityofgp.com OR friend the Crystal Centre on facebook! To find out what’s happening at BJ’s Q Club, check out their website (complete with a detailed calendar) at www.bjsqclub. com. Even better, pop in (10013 - 97th Avenue) and experience their fabulous pizza, pub atmosphere and live entertainment.

What’s In Your Family Backpack? Pack smart & make the most of your family festival outings ► Sunscreen & Hats: The sun’s rays are strongest from 10 am until 4 pm Don’t forget to apply your sunscreen 30 minutes before going out. ► H20: Pack plenty of water wherever your travels take you. It never hurts to have a few extra bottles so you can re-hydrate and continue to play! ► Emergency Kit: For those further-from-home outings, take along a few ‘just in case’ items - especially if you have children. Some snacks, bandages and even allergy medication (like Benadryl) could come in handy. ► Preserve Your Memories: Digital cameras might be your best (and most fun) way to make sure you remember your great summer days together, or, give each family member a disposable camera for the day. You can compile the wonderful images in a special summer adventure album. accent | 15

GREEN - IT’S THE NEW BLACK

Traditions: New & Old By: Cathi Hobbins

E

nvironmentally sound, efficient, healthy home design and decorating is steadily becoming one of today’s best practices. The goal of eco-design is to adapt the spaces we live and work in with our natural surroundings, ultimately contributing to the wellness of our planet, its resources and its inhabitants. Once only significant to hemp-wearing hippies, people are finding new inspirational ways to be kind to the environment when it comes to decorating their homes. There are many innovative ways to be conscious of your environmental footprint on the earth, without sacrificing style or great design. Brentwood Classics, a Toronto based upholstery producer for over 35 years, is the first furniture manufacturer in Canada to use a Bio Plush Foam made from natural soy beans, a renewable resource. Leading the country in this eco clever move, Brentwood converted all of their collections to eco-friendly foam last September. Unlike conventional upholstery foam, which is extruded as a by-product of crude oil, the bio plush foam is derived from soybean oil and is helping to create a cleaner, more energy efficient world. This not only saves 2200 barrels of crude oil, the manufacturing process results in 36% less global warming emissions and requires 61% less non-renewable energy than petrol based polyols. Without any sacrifice to quality or style, the new foam offers increased comfort and superior loadbearing performance.

Brentwood already uses water based glues and air or kiln dried woods in their frame construction and is working towards every sofa and chair they produce being 85% to 90% eco-friendly by the end of 2008. Rowe Furniture, a leading manufacturer of custom upholstered furniture in the US, is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council. They use lumber which is harvested from domestic forests which are then diligently replenished. Rowe’s Eco-Down cushions use a combination of regenerated fibre, blended with duck feather and down. The 100% natural cotton, down-proof ticking fabric used for the casing has been processed without bleaching. Rowe recently introduced its first hemp fabric and it’s first bamboo/cotton blend fabric, joining an expanding lineup of 100% natural fibre content fabrics including cottons and linens. Bamboo on a sofa sound uncomfortable? You would be amazed at how smooth and luxurious this fabric is. Bamboo grows in abundance throughout the South of China, and is acknowledged as the world’s most rapidly growing plants, reaching it’s full height of up to 50 feet within six months. This rapid growth creates an unending resource and the uses for bamboo are increasing every day. The Caren sofa from Rowe, is one of many that can be custom ordered in 100% Hemp or 60% Bamboo fabrics. No compromise on style here!

PQ Trading, located in Vancouver, imports Bamboo candles which are made in a fair trade environment using only plantation bamboo under sustainable harvest in Thailand. They are filled with 100% soy wax and utilize unbleached cotton wicks. These bamboo candles are packaged with hemp string, recycled craft tag, printed with soy ink and then placed in recycled card boxes with paper tape. When you have burned your candle to the bottom, soy wax bead refills and replacement cotton wicks are available so you can use the bamboo vessel over and over again. They look great on their own, or mixed with different heights. PQ Trading has taken into account every aspect of these candles and has put the earth first.

Above: PQ Trading’s Bamboo and Soy candles. Below: Roots popular graphic tees are made from Bamboo fibres or organic cotton.

Bamboo’s popularity is also increasing in other industries; Roots is proud to bring consumers the very latest in environmentally friendly fashion, tshirts and other items made from bamboo yarn. This fibre is made from bamboo pulp derived from stems and leaves from the bamboo plant. The rootsgreen line of clothing is made from organic cotton, cultivated without pesticides, chemical herbicides or synthetic fertilizers that are harmful to the environment. Tags on these items are printed on 100% recycled bamboo paper. Roots is also using it’s famous graphic tee’s to get the message out there with imprints like “Live Green”, “Think Green” and “Keep it Natural”. Carpette Concepts, a European importer and custom carpet operation based in Montreal, is also addressing the worldwide concern for the environment. They recently introduced an organic line of wool rugs hand made in Pakistan named “Chobi”, which are prepared using completely natural dyes. Barks, roots, plants, flowers, leaves and stones are employed to obtain various shades and tones of colour. For example, different shades of brown are obtained from walnut husks, shades of pink and red are extracted from madder, wild saffron produces a reddish yellow, or a pale yellow from turmeric and blackberry roots are used for various hues of purple. Other vegetable materials which are mixed to obtain different tones include henna, lemon, pomegranate, black tea, tobacco and mustard, just to name a few. By designing eco-efficiently we benefit from lower bills, less waste, fewer allergy and chemical related illnesses. Green building practices and products have come a long way over the years. In these image-conscious times, the integration of cutting-edge technology and contemporary design has brought green building into the forefront of architectural interests. All too often, the only obstacle to eco-design was the lack of available green resources and products. Not any longer. As a retailer, we know that there is a growing interest among consumers to not only buy environmentally friendly products, but shop at stores that are following green practices in their own business. Going green is not a trend, it’s a new way of life for everyone. accent | 29

COME SEE OUR SHORTS! By Terry Scerbak

W

ohooo!” That’s the reply I got by email when I told Axel Henning that we had the funding in place for both he and his brother Henning to fly here from Germany for Grande Prairie Live Theatre’s Reel Shorts Film Festival April 25 - 27. They co-wrote, co-directed and co-edited a remarkable 29-minute sci-fi film called ‘D-I-M, Deus in Machina’ that I saw in Toronto at the Worldwide Short Film Festival in June. It wasn’t even Henning’s graduating film from film school and Axel never went to film school. To see why I was so impressed, visit the link to their trailer at www.reelshortsfilmfest. ca. They’re going to present the ‘Behind the Green Screen: Visual Effects & Postproduction Magic’ workshop to schools during our school week, April 21 - 25 as well as to the public during our festival in which they’ll illustrate how they created the future world of their film. D-I-M has received much international recognition including nomination for the best CGI at the 2007 Swansea Film Festival and winning Best Science Fiction Short at the 2007 Chicago International REEL Shorts Festival. It’s wonderful that they’re excited about coming to Grande Prairie to share their knowledge and experiences with students and aspiring filmmakers, because we’re thrilled to have them! In addition to D-I-M, we also saw four of the 10 short films that received Oscar nominations several months later. We selected two of them for our festival and they’ll appear as part of the short film packages that we put together - ‘The Future’ (which includes D-I-M) on opening night, ‘Little Gorillas’ (the family program) and ‘Fair Trade’ on Saturday - as well as the two Oscar-nominated packages on Sunday.

takes to get into the business without leaving the province. He graduated from Grande Prairie Composite High School in 2004 and will finish the two-year Film & Video Production Diploma at SAIT in April, but he’s already been busy working in film and TV. He has worked on a CBC TV series called Cowgirls and a British TV mini-series called Burn Up. We will also bring back Scott Belyea from Vancouver and as many of the talented members of his filmmaking team as can make it. Scott, Derek Toker, Riley Pearcy and Derrick Doll presented the very popular ‘The Filmmaking Team in Action’ workshop at our first film festival. All of them graduated from St. Joe’s in 2001 except for Riley who graduated from the Composite High School in 2002. They “were very entertaining and informative about the ins and outs of the filmmaking industry” according to Bradi Baker, a teacher at PAVE (Peace Academy of Virtual Education in Spirit River). “They even led us through the making of a short film. I was amazed at how well the film turned out considering they only had half hour to create it!”

Photos, top to bottom: Axel and Henning Ricke, Kyle Robson on the ‘Curse’ set, Alex Zahara.

The other workshop that we’ll offer during the festival is called ‘Breaking into the Film Industry in Alberta’ presented by Kyle Robson. He was Director of Photography for two of the films that screened at our first film festival. He’ll give an overview of the film industry in Alberta and share his insights on what it

We’re also offering workshops to the public during the week leading up to the festival. Alex Zahara is a home-grown Grande Prairian who’s now a film and TV actor in Vancouver. He’s coming back to present the ‘Acting for the Camera’ workshop. He’s a familiar face to sci-fi fans having had 7 guest spots on Stargate SG-1 as well as appearing in numerous other TV series including Babylon 5, Dark Angel, Andromeda and The Outer Limits. He’ll give tips on breaking into the film and TV business in Canada and discuss how acting for the camera differs from stage acting.

The Reel Shorts Film Festival is the last weekend in April with workshops and a school program the week leading up to opening night. Check out our program at www.reelshortsfilmfest.ca, phone the box office at 538-1616 to order tickets and come see our shorts!

est we think that early residents of Grande Prairie were sober, hardworking citizens who had little time or opportunity for culture and entertainment, let’s examine just one month in their lives — May 1925.

the overtures ‘Majestic’ and ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’. There were also vocal solos ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘It is Enough’ from the oratorio ‘Elijah’; three rousing hymns by the audience and the anthem ‘Praise to the Father’ by the choir.

The Grand Theatre Programme that month offered a choice of three movies over five nights and a reminder not to forget the big dance at the end of the month. The Grand was also the venue for the Board of Trade Concert and Minstrel Show on May 1.

Towards the end of the month, the first ‘District School Musical Contest’ was held at the Grand. Test pieces included ‘Three Cheers for Canada’, ‘Mighty Britannia’ and ‘The Bird That Leaves its Parent Nest’ from Pattison’s operetta ‘Britania and her Daughters’. In addition there was an hour-long sketch by seven ladies titled ‘Those Husbands of Ours’. Hedman’s Orchestra played for the dance which followed and did not break up until two o’clock in the morning. Not bad for a Wednesday evening!

This show featured an hour long program of solos, chorus work and jokes, followed by a 15 minute sketch called the ‘Mug’; a “clever exhibition of club swinging” by the high school girls; comic recitations ‘Nuff Sed’; ‘The Swede at the Ball Game’; ‘Johnny Cortot’ from Drummond’s Habitant poems; and ‘Don’t Scrap the British Navy’. Then came a number of selections by Hedman’s Orchestra, and the solos ‘Bandolero’ and Bohm’s ‘Calm as the Night’. Two nights later the ‘Final Social Sing of the Season’ featured the Grande Prairie Orchestra, original violin compositions and

These were the major events of May. In between there were three repititions of the Minstrel show, a ‘roast’ and banquet for Dr. Forbes on the eve of his departure and a final program for Hedman’s violin students. Grande Prairians appreciated culture, but for the most part, they provided their own. At the Theatre ca. 1925
