Welcome to Brunswick! Brunswick really is where it all

comes together! It is a wonderful community to live, work, play, and enjoy life.

Our town of about 35,000 people is situated south of Cleveland. Because our top-notch safety forces go above and beyond in protecting our community, Brunswick was recently named one of the 50 safest towns in Ohio. We have a great school system and access to Cuyahoga Community College, as well as The University of Akron’s Medina County University Center, all within the City’s borders or very close by. Brunswick has become a medical mecca. The Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, MetroHealth, and Southwest

General have all opened branches in the City within the past 10 years. Residents have their choice of top medical facilities in the region all right here in the community. Our business-friendly community has helped make Brunswick prosper! The City administration is ready to work with potential businesses to relocate to Brunswick. Work continues to ensure that existing businesses stay in Brunswick and flourish. In addition to our numerous retail opportunities, recreation is a priority. Brunswick Recreation Center offers members numerous opportunities to stay fit and healthy. We also have many parks. Brunswick

Lake Park is home to the Susan Hambley Nature Center, hosting a fitness path, fishing, wildlife galore and programs for children. Residents and dogs enjoy walking the beautiful path that surrounds the lake. As mayor, I am proud to see the City’s growth over the past 10 years. Our close-knit community will continue to move forward and work together. We are making a good city even better. Brunswick is really where it all comes together! Sincerely, Ron Falconi Mayor

communities were in the running when Tim and Gayle Smith considered a place to settle down and raise a family 27 years ago. Brunswick's small town friendliness made it the clear choice, recalls Tim Smith, who has since served as the city's economic development director and as a Medina County commissioner. "It was one of the things I noticed from the very beginning," he says. "I moved from a very friendly town and I was looking for a place that would be as friendly as the place I moved from. Brunswick was it." Smith isn't the only one who noticed the friendliness. Almost 30 years later, says Mayor Ron Falconi, Brunswick still has that neighborly charm. "It's a feeling of community; a feeling of friendliness

Brunswick…Where It All Comes Together that you don't see in a lot of places nowadays. When people are in need, this community comes together to help. It's amazing. Unfortunately, we've seen that in action after tragedies in recent years. When we had an apartment fire two years, people literally were without homes. Out of the blue, in the middle of the night, people just started driving to St. Ambrose to deliver clothes and pillows and toys. I think it's because we're a community of people with old fashioned values." Brunswick, Falconi says, is an ideal place to live, play and run a business. "We're far enough away from the big city, but we're still close enough so that people can still commute to work," he says. "And because we're outside of Cuyahoga County, living here is more affordable in large part because of our lower taxes. My home is a lot more

affordable than if it were the same home, but in Cuyahoga County." Settled in 1815 by Massachusetts natives Solomon Deming Jr. and his son, Frederick, the area that became the city of Brunswick now makes up the largest city in Medina County, with a population of about 35,000 residents. Contrasting its bustling retail areas along Route 303 and much of Route 42, the city touts about 350 acres of parkland, made up of 23 community and neighborhood parks. Notable among them is 75-acre Brunswick Lake Park, which features a one mile walking trail with two boardwalks encircling the lake. The trail provides easy walking access to the Susan Hambley Nature Center.  Continued on page 4 |

on I-71, and our industrial park sits right there along the freeway," he says. "That's a tremendous draw for businesses that want to relocate or start up here in the city."

With plenty of recreational amenities, Brunswick also is a strategic location for business, Falconi notes. "We're right

The city’s income tax base is made up of a mix between business and residential taxes, with business withholding taxes making up 49 percent of all income tax collections in 2017. The remaining portion of the city's income tax revenue is made up of residential taxes at 43 percent and business netprofit taxes, at 8 percent. Brunswick continues to be fortunate to have a diverse business tax base that is not reliant on any one business or business sector, the city reported in its 2017 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). "The Brunswick business tax base is made up of many small to medium size companies that have a wide range of products and services," the CAFR says. "The continued healthy growth in income tax revenue over the last several years is attributable to this diversified and growing tax base along with an increased renewable tax rate."

Scene 75, Cleveland’s newest and largest indoor entertainment center, opened this past fall in Brunswick.

With its logistically strategic location, Brunswick also offers myriad shopping and dining opportunities, higher education and convenient health care offered by some of the most notable providers in Northeast Ohio.“Brunswick is a medical Mecca,” Falconi says, noting the presence along Route 303 of renowned institutions like Cleveland Clinic and University

Hospitals through its affiliation with Southwest General, as well as MetroHealth’s first facility outside Cuyahoga County. All three of those facilities have walk-in clinics, and Southwest and Cleveland Clinic operate emergency rooms. The city's growing commercial and retail base offers retail storefront multi-tenant space in 20 shopping centers, accentuated by the 107 acre Brunswick Town Center, located just east of Brunswick Lake Park. Anchored by Home Depot and Giant Eagle, Town Center's charming Main Street is lined with small specialty shops. A Comfort Inn and Suites is scheduled to be completed in the complex this year, Falconi says. Falconi says Brunswick's neighborly feel is reflected in its many civic and faith-based organizations, which volunteer their effort for the betterment of the community. "The Brunswick Ministerial Association, a group of local pastors, meet at least once a month to share ideas for ways to help the community," he says. Last fall, Falconi had the opportunity to promote the city to the other side of the world. The son of Filipino immigrants, the mayor was one of 10 Asian-American community leaders from across the U.S. chosen to visit Japan as part of a cultural exchange program through Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "We learned about Japanese culture and discussed U.S.-Japan relations," Falconi said. "It was a opportunity to represent Brunswick and put the city in a positive light."

Taxes are a Complicated Subject The new tax laws have an impact on most taxpayers.

You may be receiving more in your paycheck since the withholding tables were changed in February 2018 to take out less tax and therefore increasing your take home pay. The question most of us have is whether we get to keep that increase or will we owe it back come April. There are changes in several tax benefits for parents with children under age 18; the increase in the child tax credit to up to $2,000 is only one of the changes. Another change is that your 529 plan can now be used for your children in K-12 for tuition in private schools. Not just for college anymore! Some reasons to see your tax advisor for a checkup: - If you moved during the year from one city to another, you may need to make estimates to your new city. - To learn how HSA contributions can be part of your retirement planning. - To review your estimated tax liability and your withholding. - If you started a business. - If you have received correspondence from the IRS, your state or city. We are here year-round to help you to plan and prepare according to your needs! Contact the H&R Block in Brunswick by calling 330-225-8200 or visit

Brunswick City Schools...Dedicated to Excellence It is an exciting time for Brunswick City Schools. Over

the past year, the Brunswick community has demonstrated its dedication and support for Brunswick City Schools. In November 2017 the community passed a 2.3 mill bond issue to build a new middle school. The new middle school will consolidate the district’s three middle schools and provide the students with updated facilities. The new middle school will be built on the property that sits behind Edwards and Visintainer Middle Schools. For this project, the district has contracted with ThenDesign Architecture and Hammond Construction, both of which have extensive experience designing and building new schools. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2019 with an estimated occupancy date of August 2020. The district continues to increase the number of opportunities for students. This past February the district had a ribbon cutting for a mock CVS store. CVS Health has partnered with Brunswick City Schools to create a mock store inside the high school. The mock store features shelves of CVS products and has a curriculum where the work study students will

To kick off the new middle school project, the district held a visioning session which included a large group of students, staff and community members. Over the course of the day the participants identified the successes and challenges of our current middle schools.

Brunswick City Schools hosted the Third Annual Track and Field Day in partnership with Special Olympics Ohio Medina County on May 10, 2018 at Brunswick Auto Mart Stadium. This day provided an extraordinary opportunity for students with disabilities to showcase their athletic abilities with a group of peers from across the county. Brunswick will once again host this event in May 2019.

Ralph (Gene) Tolliver, founder of Gene’s Refrigeration, was born and raised in Naoma, WV. He worked cutting timber in exchange for a ride to Cleveland and left home at the age of 17 with only $10.00 that his father gave him. By stating he was 18 instead of 17, he successfully landed a job at GM and often held at least two jobs. During one of his second jobs (at Parma Community Hospital) he decided to study heating and cooling. After completing the mailorder courses, he purchased a pickup truck with a ladder rack and started working on refrigeration units in bars in Brunswick. Gene developed many suggestions for the GM plant. The first being eliminating the 300 window air conditioner units and replacing them with two 200-ton rooftop units…both of which are still functioning at the GM plant to this day.

Carrier and Gene’s Refrigeration is a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer to this day, having earned the Carrier President’s Award in 2017 and 2018. The President’s Award is Carrier’s highest dealer honor that recognizes dealers who exemplify leadership and management, customer satisfaction, expertise, business growth and operational excellence. Some things will never change, however. You can still reach Gene’s at the same number from 1959…330-225-6650 and Gene has instilled his values into every one of his employees. They currently employ about 30-40 service technicians, installers, and office staff. As they prepare to celebrate their 60th “Diamond” Anniversary, they are excited for continued growth, providing the absolute best customer service, involvement with local communities and the virtues that Gene has put in place.

In 1959, Gene officially started Gene’s Refrigeration out of his home in Brunswick, OH and by 1961, he hired his first employee. The company and his family continued to grow and in 1975, he relocated his family to a house on Norwalk Road in Medina. By 1985, Gene had to build another building to house the business, and choose to build on his property right next to the house, which is the current location. Since then, the building has had two additional add-ons to accommodate the growth of the business. One of the additions houses their in-house duct line so that they can custom fabricate the duct work in each home. In 2010, Gene transferred ownership of the business to two of his four children, Keith Tolliver and Linda (Tolliver) Ankney. Over the years, the business has continued to grow and evolve. They now offer heating, cooling, plumbing and electric repairs as well as installations and new construction. In 1984, Gene partnered with

With a newly expanded presence in Strongsville, Altenheim Senior Living is home to a variety of spectrums of the aging process. “With our new memory assisted living community and therapy rehab center, we are the only senior community in the area designed to the Planetree principals of person-centered care,” announces Paul Psota, CEO of Altenheim, a not-for-profit life plan community. Several years ago, when Altenheim decided to address the area’s shortage of memory assisted living and rehabilitation services, C.C. came immediately to mind. “C.C. is one of the few architects who specializes in the Planetree concept,” Paul explains. “Planetree removes the barriers between residents and caregivers, focusing on the needs of residents and their families.” “Designed to emphasize nature and calmness,” states Director of Marketing Donna Casey, “the two-story Shurmer Place Memory Assisted Living community offers 38 private one- and twobedroom suites with living rooms, dinettes, four season rooms and roll-in showers to accommodate residents with memory loss.” The Altenheim Therapy Rehab Center serves patients recovering from orthopedic, cardiac and neurological conditions that require therapy. Along with 32 private rooms, a full-service spa and a beer garden, the center also includes an outpatient unit for occupational, speech and physical therapy. “I’m proud to say we have built the most beautiful memory assisted living community in the area,” Paul says. Consistent with the Planetree philosophy, the community emphasizes natural light and openness, explains Resident Director for the memory assisted living community Beth Seese. “The community was designed with nature in mind, with color schemes that were specifically chosen for residents with dementia,” Beth says. “Studies show that certain

colors create feelings of calmness, which is especially important to the emotional and psychological well-being of memory care residents.” The apartments are arranged in clusters of six or seven, which open into a common area to create a feeling of community. Each common area features a fireplace, oversized windows and a central kitchen where residents can gather and participate in meal preparation. “We want the residents to participate and remain involved,” Beth says. Activities in the memory assisted care community range from performing everyday tasks such as meal preparation, enjoying arts and crafts and entertainment. The new 4,000 square foot therapy rehab center, Paul says, allows Altenheim to meet the demands of ever-changing post-acute care by providing all aspects of physical, occupational and other therapy. The community features a training kitchen, bath, and bedroom, where patients can prepare for the routine daily tasks they’ll need when they return home. Outside, an area has been set aside for residents to practice getting in and out of their own vehicles. All inpatient therapy rooms are private, spacious and have roll-in showers. “Keeping with the hospitality concept, we offer room service,” Donna says. Along with inpatient therapy, the new community also offers outpatient therapy services by recently acquired Hands on Physical Therapy at Altenheim.

Rito’s Italian Bakery

ito’s Italian Bakery & Imported Foods was founded by Santo Rito, with the help and support of his wife Maria Rito and his sister Maria Belfiore. Santo came to America from the small town of Riposto, Sicily in 1955. He developed his trade as an apprentice in the most distinguished pasticcerie (pastry shops) of Taormina, a famous tourist location in Sicily. Santo introduced the concepts of good Sicilian baking to the west side of Cleveland in the form of Rito’s Italian Bakery in 1965. Since then business has expanded and Rito’s Bakery moved to the suburbs of Cleveland. The Brunswick store is a landmark of one of the most prestigious bakeries in Ohio, celebrating over 50 years in baking. While many factors contributed to the business’ success most of the credit is due to the hard work and dedication of the entire family. This dedication ensures the bakery’s future and keeps the tradition alive. Rito’s is known for its cookie trays, Italian bread, wedding cakes, Sicilian cassata and cannoli, and especially the famous “Gigantic Cannoli” filled with three dozen miniature cannoli which was featured on the Food Network’s show “Guilty Pleasures.” Rito’s was recently awarded a Best of Cleveland

from Cleveland Magazine for their gigantic Cannoli. The bakery is excited to announce that Heinens will now be carrying Rito’s Cannoli! The small plain and small chocolate dipped Cannoli will be available at all Heinens locations. “It has been an honor for the Rito family to serve the Greater Cleveland community for over 50 years, and we continue to strive on a daily basis to provide our customers with the most authentic, highest quality products possible.”

New Medicare Cards are Coming 1. Your new card will automatically come to you. You do not need to do anything as long as your address is up to date. If you need to update your address, contact the social security office. 2. Your new card will have a new Medicare Number that is unique to you, instead of your Social Security Number. This will help to protect your identity. 3. Your Medicare coverage and benefits will stay the same. 4. Mailing takes time. Your card may arrive at a different time than your friend or neighbor’s. 5. Your new card is paper, which is easier for many providers to use and copy. 6. Once you get your new Medicare card, destroy your old Medicare card and start using your new card right away. 7. If you are in a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO), your Medicare Advantage Plan ID card is your main card for Medicare— you should still keep and use it whenever you need care. In addition, if you have a Medicare drug plan, be sure to keep that card as well. Even if you use one of these other cards, you also may be asked to show your new Medicare card, so keep it with you. 8. Doctors, other health care providers and facilities know it’s coming

and will ask for your new Medicare card when you need care, so carry it with you. 9. Only give your new Medicare Number to doctors, pharmacists, other health care providers, your insurers, or people you trust to work with Medicare on your behalf. 10. If you forget your new card, you, your doctor or other health care provider may be able to look up your Medicare Number online. WATCH OUT FOR SCAMS Medicare will never call you uninvited and ask you to give us personal or private information to get your new Medicare Number and card. Scam artists may try to get personal information (like your current Medicare Number) by contacting you about your new card. If someone asks you for your information, for money, or threatens to cancel your health benefits if you do not share your personal information, hang up and call us at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Homes & Real Estate

Welcome Buyers with Great Curb Appeal When you decide to list and sell your home you

should pay attention to the curb appeal. You want everyone that pulls up in front of your home to get the desire to step inside. What is involved in preparing? First and foremost, a clean yard! Make that extra effort to pull the weeds, mow the lawn, put down fresh mulch and plant some flowers. While you are at it, take a look at your front door and the trim around it. Do either need a fresh coat of paint? Paint is the quickest and most inexpensive way to freshen up your front stoop. Don’t forget to add a beautiful wreath on the door. Remember, you want to draw potential buyers into the house. Now that we have them in the house, let’s address the next most important visual, the foyer or entryway. Here are five welcoming suggestions: * A mirror. It is a must have. * A lamp or light. You need to be able to see when you lock up. * Flowers. Yes, more flowers. Try an orchid or potted plant. * A bench or seat. You need to sit down to put on your shoes, right? * A bowl for keys or change. It’s a visual that says, lay your keys here. The goal is to get the buyer to imagine living in this space. By creating a warm and welcoming environment, the buyer says “I want to see more of this home.” A seller consultation with a Howard Hanna agent will help guide you to marketing your home with maximum impact. Give us a call at 330-225-1077. Our signs are everywhere! Provided by Emily Lopez, Howard Hanna Brunswick Branch Manager.

We serve the communities of Brunswick, Brunswick Hills, Hinckley and Valley City, providing a three-day emergency supply of food. Eligible residents of these four cities can receive assistance from us once a month. In 2017 we served 2,265 families, which were made up of 7,014 individuals. Each member of the family was provided three meals a day for three days, which works out to a total of 63,126 meals. The disturbing statistic is that 29% of our clients are children. Hunger is very real and it’s happening here in Brunswick. Federal Government and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as well as various State and local governments. In most cases, eligibility for most benefits is based upon discharge from active military service other than dishonorable conditions. State and local benefits can sometimes be more complex and have other criteria associated with their eligibility, such as residence requirements, service connection for a disability, receipt of a certain medal or award and in some cases income. In all cases, each veteran must be assessed for eligibility independently from their peers. No two veterans are alike when it comes to Veterans Benefits. Although several benefits can be cast across a broad demographic of veterans there are those benefits that are specifically designed to help our most at risk Veterans. Federal Government (VA) Benefits: Disability Compensation, Veterans Pension, Medical, Education and Training, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, Home Loan and Life Insurance. State of Ohio Benefits: Ohio Veterans Homes (Ohio has two veterans’ homes in Georgetown and Sandusky), Ohio Veterans Bonus Program, State Tax Exemptions, Homestead Exemption, Military Injury Relief Fund (MIRF), Financial Assistance (from county office), State Employment, Ohio Educator License Fee Elimination, Ohio National Guard Scholarship Program, Ohio War Orphans Scholarship, The Ohio Promise and Recreation Benefits such as Disabled Veteran Recreational Benefits, Hunting & Fishing Licenses, Boating Licenses & Registration, Camping at Ohio State Parks, Active Duty Hunting and Fishing Licenses and Camping Discounts at Ohio State Parks. Medina County Benefits: Financial Assistance Program, Request for military records, Proper submission of claims to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs through a VA Accredited Service Officer, Grave markers and flags, Notary Service, Transportation and Veterans Identification Cards. As stated all veterans are reviewed individually when applying for their earned benefits.
