Too often in recent years Brunswick residents have come together in response to tragedy. Over the past two years, however, the community has unified on a town project – an accessible playground at Neura Park for children with special needs. The playground is expected to be completed by September 2022. “The project has been one of the unifying things in our city,” says Mayor Ron Falconi. “Everyone is chipping in, whether it’s city council, the city administration, local businesses, the schools and the civic organizations. Everybody is getting involved. People are doing fundraisers. We even have kids doing lemonade stands to help raise money.”

encourages kids to play with one another. We see that our population of typically developing students are very curious in a kindhearted way. They want to be friends with the special needs students, but there’s really no natural way for them to initiate play.”
According to Councilman Tim Smith, the cooperation toward a beneficial cause “says a lot about the type of people who live here in Brunswick.” Among the major contributors to the project was Meijer Inc., which in May opened a new supercenter on Route 303. Meijer donated $20,000 toward the playground project. “We had been waiting a long time for Meijer to open,” Falconi says. “When it did, it lived up to the hype. It’s a one-stop shop for everything from a gas station to the food and merchandise in the store itself. It’s a good addition to the community.” The 155,000-square-foot store offers groceries, a pharmacy, home goods and general merchandise including women’s apparel, beauty care, an expansive baby department and a pet department. The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based retailer, founded in 1934, operates more than 260 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. The supermarket filled a void created by the closing of the Buehler Food Market on Route 303 in 2016. Brunswick, which incorporated in 1960, is the largest city in Medina County with a population of about 37,000 residents. The 13 square mile town is strategically located right on I-71, which provides convenient access for

We are one of the few cities with industrial parks right next to an interstate highway. If you’re a business, obviously you want to be where the action is. Brunswick offers that strategic location with the advantage of having lower taxes than you have in most of Cuyahoga and Summit counties.” The city’s three business parks, the mayor says, are vital to its tax base. “Having a strong business base helps to keep residential taxes low, while helping to create good local jobs for the people right here in the community,” Falconi says. “Brunswick is a very business-friendly city and we’re very happy that the business owners in the industrial parks are here and help to play a big role in our Brunswick family.” Along with a strong industrial/manufacturing presence, Brunswick also has a thriving retail and service sector, which offers residents ample shopping and dining options. Many of those stores and restaurants are locally owned, independent businesses, notes Debbie Boehmke, executive director of the 300-member Northern Medina County Chamber Alliance. their own businesses — make up the largest tier of the people who are joining the chamber,” she says.
Green Space Balancing out the city’s commercial zones, Brunswick also has about 350 acres of parkland, made up of 23 community and neighborhood parks. Notable among them is 75-acre Brunswick Lake Park, which features a one-mile walking trail with two boardwalks encircling the lake. The trail provides easy walking access to the Susan Hambley Nature Center. In June, the Medina County Park District expected to complete phase 1 of the multipurpose Plum Creek Greenway trail, which will lead walkers and cyclists from Plum Creek Park to the city’s Mooney Park.

One of the ways the chamber promotes local business is through Chamber Chomps, a program through which members are encouraged once a month to eat lunch at a designated restaurant. The program started as a way to help local businesses that were severely impacted by the pandemic. “On the first Wednesday of every month we feature a local restaurant and encourage all of our members to go there to join us for lunch,” she explains. “Our office staff goes at noon and welcome as many members as we can to come, or we encourage people who can’t come for lunch to place a takeout order or dine in for dinner. It’s a unique way to support our local restaurants. I don’t think any of the other chambers are doing anything quite like that.”

The Brunswick Recreation Center, Falconi says, is important as an exercise and wellness facility, but also as a central gathering spot for residents. With all of those amenities, however, Brunswick’s most important feature is its residents, the mayor says. Tim Smith agrees. “This is the most communityoriented town I have ever been in,” he says. “We have the friendliest people I’ve ever met, including the people who run businesses in the community. When we moved here from Michigan 33 years ago, we looked at a lot of cities, but we fell in love with Brunswick.”

In 2019, Cheryl created The Footprint Effect in honor of her late husband, Nuccio. Nuccio was deeply passionate about helping others, and this allows his desire to live on.
