Brunswick and its

residents can be very proud of their city. Over the years, we have been named as a top suburb or top city for our quality of living. Photos: Tim Smith This only adds to the honor that we received when we were recently named by the National Council for Home Safety and Security as one of the 50 Safest Cities in Ohio. We are a business-friendly community! We work with potential business owners to see what can be done to streamline the process to have your businesses up and running. We happily work with current owners who want to expand and grow and we want all of you to be successful! Brunswick is fortunate to have Cuyahoga Community College’s Brunswick University Center within our community, allowing you to acquire an Associate's,

Bachelor's, or Master's Degree affordably and seamlessly! I am proud that they serve our city. Brunswick also has numerous medical choices with the Cleveland Clinic, Southwest General’s Brunswick Medical Center and ER, and MetroHealth Brunswick Health Center operating all within our border. Please visit our many wonderful parks. Our newest one, Brunswick Lake Park, is home to the Susan Hambley Nature Center. Come see the live animals there and have the children be a part of the many programs that take place. Feel free to take a walk on the trail that goes around this beautiful lake. As you can see, Brunswick really is where it all comes together. As mayor, I have to admit that I strongly feel that the sun always shines on our city. We will continue to use our successes as a foundation upon which to build an even brighter future because Brunswick’s best days are still yet to come! Sincerely, Ron Falconi Mayor

we are in Northeast Ohio. But our community residents, stakeholders and businesses know what a sunny, bright place Brunswick is to live, work and call home. Over the past year, our community has experienced strong and stable growth which is evidenced from new homes, condos and apartments, to retail operations and manufacturing. Some of the businesses that we have welcomed into the Brunswick community include Petitti’s, Scene 75, Pavletich Manufacturing, Engelke Construction

Services, Antonio’s Pizza, West Branch Malt House, Northpark Plaza, which has HotHead Burritos, Pizza Fire and DentalWorks, to name a few and US Bank has opened a new branch on Pearl inside Drug Mart, along with other businesses. We have seen solid growth from our companies already established here in Brunswick including, Mazda of Brunswick, Ronlen Manufacturing, Murphy Tractor, ID Images and A Raymond Timmerman to name a few. This coming winter and into the spring of 2018, we will see the building and opening of the new Comfort Suites hotel, a new Sheetz being built at the corner of W. 130th and 303 along with the new Zeppe’s Tavern in the Laurel Square Plaza. Our housing starts and senior housing options remain strong, with the opening of Danbury of Brunswick in the next few months, the new Brunswick Pointe skilled nursing  Continued on page 5

Made in Medina County is a Business Expo Like No Other! Because manufacturing represents

over 29% of Medina County’s economy, Made in Medina County’s mission is to raise awareness and educate the residents, students and businesses as to the economic importance and career opportunities of the county’s manufacturing industry. Made in Medina County’s manufacturing expo event is held every other October at the Medina County Fairgrounds and attracts nearly 1,000 visitors, including students from every school district in the county. Expo attendees enjoy breakfast and networking, followed by a keynote speaker. In 2017, Made in Medina County welcomes the Disney Institute to share insights into leadership excellence. After the presentation, the trade show floor opens up to showcase the great manufacturers making products right here in Medina County that everyone uses in daily life and are shipped all over the world. To get a true understanding of what manufacturing looks like today, visitors can participate in interactive demonstrations such as robotics, welding simulation, and 3-D printing. The manufacturing expo is held at the Medina County Fairgrounds, 720 West Smith Road in Medina. For more information on this event, visit www.madeinmedinacounty.com.

development. We continue to see this time and time again at our area businesses. Companies are looking to grow and to do this, they are looking to either train or hire a skilled workforce. From construction to manufacturing, companies need skilled employees that can be transferable from one industry to another. Without these folks to work in the skilled areas, we lose our edge in the growing economy. Directions may change from time to time, but we will need multi discipline skills for generations to come. With 20 community and neighborhood park sites totaling approximately 350 acres, Brunswick is fortunate to have abundant parkland for everyone to enjoy. Brunswick Lake’s gorgeous setting which includes paved bicycle and walking trails and the Susan Hambley Nature Center, operated in partnership with the Medina County Parks District, is a gem in our community.  Continued on page 8

Consumer Protection in Medina County Are you concerned

with making sure you get what you pay for? Auditor Mike Kovack’s Weights and Measures Division ensures that consumers receive what they pay for by regularly inspecting gas pumps, deli scales, electronic scanners and other devices throughout the county. What can you do as a consumer? • At the gas pump, be sure all settings are at zero before pumping. Pump one gallon of gas. Check to see if the price is equal to the advertised price. • At the grocery store check-out, watch as the price of the item appears. Ask the clerk to check the price if you think the scanned price is incorrect. • Check for the current year approval sticker on devices. • If you suspect that a measuring device is not working properly, call the Medina County Auditor’s office at 330-725-9764. The Award-winning Brunswick City Schools The residents of Brunswick have a lot to be proud

of when it comes to Brunswick City Schools. The district recently received the Auditor of State Award for its excellent record keeping. The Auditor of State Award is given to those entities that file timely financial reports in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), as well as receive a “clean” audit report. The “clean” audit report means that the financial audit did not contain findings for recovery, material citations, significant deficiencies, or questionable costs. Brunswick High School was ranked 96th on the U.S. News and World Report Best High Schools list earning the school a silver medal award. Schools were evaluated based on student performance, graduation rates, state testing and advanced placement exams. The high school was also recognized by the Cleveland Clinic as a Cleveland Clinic Banner School. This award recognizes a school’s noteworthy success in leveraging community resources to advance student

Education

learning. The schools’ effort in implementing the Cleveland Clinic eXpressions program demonstrated an exceptional commitment to student enrichment and distinguish Brunswick High School as a 2016-2017 Cleveland Clinic Banner School. This distinction is earned by fewer than 30 percent of the 159 schools in four states that participated in Civic Education programming this year. Kidder Elementary was recognized as a Hall of Fame School by the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators (OAESA). The award recognizes schools that engage faculty, students and the community to provide a quality school experience. Kidder Elementary was judged from their completed application and on-site visits from the OAESA committee. Beyond being an award-winning school district, Brunswick City Schools continues to expand opportunities for its students. This past year Project Lead The Way was added at all three middle schools as well as the high school. The program focuses on problem-solving, creative thinking, communication and collaboration. The district has formed a partnership with Discovery Education to enable students to dig deeper into the lesson by accessing a full library of multimedia resources such as digital field trips, virtual labs and writing prompts. Moving towards digital content will help students expand their 21st-century skills and apply the content to real life situations, giving them an advantage when competing with others throughout the Michael Mayell, nation and the world. Bullseye Activewear and Promotions Celebrates 25 Years

One of Ohio’s leading suppliers of screen printing, embroidery and promotional products, Bullseye Activewear and Promotions is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Bullseye started out like many small businesses: as a home-based business. The continued growth and success of the company is directly linked to the background and drive of the founders – Jim and Susan Heiser. Jim studied graphics in high school, at CVCC in Brecksville, then earned a college degree in Graphic Communications Management and Technologies. Jim worked at a leading commercial offset printer in Cleveland for 14 years, beginning as an estimator and ultimately became the production manager, customer service supervisor and scheduler for a 3 shift, 100 employee operation. He then used his commercial printing industry knowledge to start Bullseye with his wife Susan in 1992. Bullseye quickly outgrew its home-based roots and moved to Brunswick to expand their operation. A move to the Brunswick Industrial Park in 2011 gave the company even more space, allowing room for a showroom, spacious offices, a retro 50’s style break room, conference room, climate controlled embroidery room and the space to upgrade to a 12 color, automatic screen printing press. Increased orders spurred expansion plans. Soon a 4,200 square foot addition will

Bullseye Activewear 2947 Nationwide Pky., Brunswick 330-220-1720 • www.bullseyeactivewear.com

increase their space to 11,000 square feet. “We offer our customers a wide range of promotional products and print services. Custom screen printed or embroidered apparel is our specialty. We listen to our customers’ needs and help them through the production process. We have the knowledge, experienced staff and business relationships to help with all types of marketing, branding and uniform needs,” states Jim Heiser, VP of Operations. This year’s addition of two cutting edge, 15 color, multi-head embroidery machines helps to illustrate their continued commitment to the latest technologies. Bullseye is proud to service local businesses, schools, churches, fortune 500 companies, and even professional sports teams. Bullseye was thrilled to be trusted to provide Championship shirts for both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Indians last year! The staff worked through the night after the wins so retailers could have championship inventory on their shelves the next day. Jim and Susan praise their entire staff. “We wouldn’t be able to produce the quantities needed and meet the deadlines necessary without a great, dedicated staff,” says Jim.

Rito’s Italian Bakery HOME OF THE GIGANTIC CANNOLI

ito’s Italian Bakery & Imported Foods was founded by Santo Rito, with the help and support of his wife Maria Rito and his sister Maria Belfiore. Santo came to America from the small town of Riposto, Sicily in 1955. He developed his trade as an apprentice in the most distinguished pasticcerie (pastry shops) of Taormina, a famous tourist location in Sicily. Santo introduced the concepts of good Sicilian baking to the west side of Cleveland in the form of Rito’s Italian Bakery in 1965. Since then business has expanded and Rito’s Bakery moved to the suburbs of Cleveland. The Brunswick store is a landmark of one of the most prestigious bakeries in Ohio, celebrating over 50 years in baking. While many factors contributed to the business’ success most of the credit is due to the hard work and dedication of the entire family. This dedication ensures the bakery’s future and keeps the tradition alive. Rito’s is known for its cookie trays, Italian bread, wedding cakes, Sicilian cassata and cannoli, and especially the famous “Gigantic Cannoli” filled with three dozen miniature

cannoli which was featured on the Food Network’s show “Guilty Pleasures.” “It has been an honor for the Rito family to serve the Greater Cleveland community for the past 50 years, and we continue to strive on a daily basis to provide our customers with the most authentic, highest quality products possible.”

Senior Living

The Catered Approach to Active Aging By Kimberly M. Corrigan, Administrator Pearlview Rehab & Wellness Center

For the first time in history, our older population is

extremely diverse, from ability and age, to income and culture, to expectations of life. How will we meet the needs, capabilities, expectations, dreams and desires of such different individuals? Every week over one million people around the world turn 65. Yet, addressing population aging is less about the numbers of older people and more about their diversity. A lifetime of diverse experiences, and the behaviors they have created, makes the 65-and-over age group a unique segment of the population. These experiences and behaviors influence everything, from where and how people live, to

their health status and quality of life. Meeting this group’s expectations and needs requires us to understand who they are. Consider, for example, their physical and cognitive abilities; health; age; work or marital status; sex; sexual orientation; race and culture, as well as whether or not they have children or grandchildren, access to transportation, and disposable income. This is why the older-adult market has challenged our creativity, strategic thinking, planning and implementation processes, and why one-size-fits-all solutions fail miserably with these individuals. To address aging seniors, we first needed to establish this group’s wants and needs. Upon much focused deliberation and extensive research, we developed a partnership of care service providers to offer a catered approach to the kinds of products or services desired and have created and will deliver to meet the expectations of active aging seniors. Life happens, sometimes resulting in a hospitalization. Afterwards, a patient may need rehab and skilled nursing services before the can go back home. Today, thanks to the great advances in our healthcare system, you too can achieve a healthy, successful and muscle-building lifestyle to ensure you do not fall and break a bone!

We are an independent local shelter with no ties to any national organization or rescues, and we employ a humane officer and emergency rescue technicians who respond to calls about animals in need 24/7. Animals in need are brought into our facility where we provide medical care, rehabilitation and adoption. Shelter adoption hours are 12pm-4pm. Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday (Closed Mondays & Wednesdays). Donations are gratefully accepted between the hours of 9am-5pm any day. Our address is 8790 Guilford Road, Seville, Ohio 44273. We are always looking for new volunteers, foster homes and adopters!
