A Great Place to Call Home

From its official organization in 1818, to becoming the tenth fastestgrowing county in Ohio, Medina County has strived over 200 years to provide residents with abundant opportunities to live, work and play. Medina County is fortunate to have people who treasure the history and

who are proud of the communities in which they live. With a population of around 182,470 as of the last census, Medina County offers three cities, six villages and 17 townships to call home. From historic downtowns to familyoriented suburbs to rural countryside, there is something in the county for everyone!

Do you love history? There are 29 properties and districts located

on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the local historical societies have activities to participate in throughout the year. The Medina County Historical Society held a capital drive to purchase and preserve the iconic McDowell-Phillips house located at 205 S. Prospect St. in Medina. This beautiful Queen Anne ShingleStyle home was built in 1890 by R.M. McDowell. Located in the Bankers Row historic district, the house features seven fireplaces, 14 rooms, and is considered the largest house in Medina. It is a historic landmark and serves as an additional museum to house the society’s collections as well as many significant items left by the five generations who lived there. The society also owns the John Smart House Museum located at 206 N. Elmwood Ave. in Medina. Both house-museums are open for tours at various times throughout the year.

for free? Veteran ID cards are issued by the Medina County Recorders Office located in the County Administration Building on the first floor.

The 273-acre Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery was opened by the Federal Government in June of 2000. The cemetery is one of only 136 such cemeteries throughout the United States.

There are seven public school districts within the county and numerous private school options. The Medina County Career Center offers courses for high school students who want to focus on advanced career technical training and academic excellence for life-long success. Courses are also offered to adults who want to start a new job or advance in their existing career. We boast The University of

Akron-Medina County University Center, Cuyahoga Community College – Brunswick University Campus, and an Achievement Center which educates those with developmental disabilities. Medina County Park District connects people with nature through education and conservation, managing more than 8,400 acres that include 22 parks and preserves, over 50 trails, two nature centers, and Ohio’s largest natural inland lake — Chippewa Lake. Six libraries are conveniently located throughout the county to escape with a good

book or partake in one of the numerous programs offered. A Bookmobile makes stops throughout the county bringing books, movies, and programs to the communities.

Traveling around Medina County is easy through Medina County Public Transit (MCPT), which works to

provide safe, reliable, quality public transportation services to all of Medina County. Last year, the MC Flex began as a pilot program in Wadsworth to test the viability of the service. MC Flex is a microtransit service, a relatively new public transit option that operates similarly to ride-hailing applications like Uber and Lyft. Rather than waiting for a bus operating on a set route, the on-demand service allows riders to instead book a trip that will pick them up and drop them off at their preferred destination anywhere within the designated zone. Riders can book a trip in one of three ways - by using the Rides on Demand mobile application from their smartphone; using the web-based application on their computer; or by calling the MCPT office and speaking with a dispatcher. Benefits of the MC Flex service include increased ridership, improved service capacity, reduced vehicle miles, less

passenger travel time, and lower vehicle fuel usage. The service operates in Wadsworth, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Medina City, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Brunswick, Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Trips can be scheduled by calling 330-7239670 up to seven days in advance. A

minimum of two hours in advance is required. Trips are booked based on availability. MC Flex fares are oneway, $1.50; qualifying reduced, $.75; or all-day pass, $4. A monthly MC Flex Pass can also be purchased for $46. Additionally, tickets can be purchased through the EZfare App to further

increase the ease of payment while riding transit. Buses are equipped with EZfare Validators, allowing passengers to scan the barcode when boarding.

The newly constructed Medina County Courthouse opened in December 2022. The new courthouse consists of four floors and provides approximately 86,300 square feet of new space and approximately 21,000 square feet of renovated space. Constructed behind the current courthouses, the new courthouse includes the County Clerk, sally port, secure holding areas, Common Pleas Court, Juvenile and Probate courts, Juvenile Probation and County Adult Probation. Renovations to the 1841 Courthouse, located on Medina’s Historic Public Square, were completed in 2023 creating a safer, more efficient courthouse with ample space to serve the citizens of Medina County for many years to come.

With easy access to three interstates, Medina County provides the ideal location for nearly 4,000 businesses. Interstates I-71, I-76 and I-271 provide easy access to the large metropolitan areas of Cleveland, Akron and Columbus. There are two federal highways and eight state routes that intersect the county. All these aid in making the average travel time to work approximately 27 minutes. Feel like taking a trip out of town? The Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the Akron-Canton Regional Airport are both under 40 minutes away! There are also two municipal airports. The Port of Cleveland, the third largest port on the Great Lakes, is located 45 minutes north on Lake Erie.

Whether you visit or spend a lifetime, Medina County can match your housing, shopping, spiritual, education and business needs.

The Key to Stability

The team at Medina County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) focuses on attracting, retaining, and expanding businesses. The business base of Medina County is not concentrated in any one industry, and the local economy has proven that diversification of industry is the key to stability, regardless of economic climate. We are always looking to attract new businesses to Medina County, especially small, closely held, or family-owned businesses.

Through our business outreach program, we meet with over 200 companies annually to learn from their successes, anticipate their needs, and help them achieve their goals. MCEDC helps retain businesses by providing them access to financing resources, connecting them to workforce and educational partners and their programs, and negotiating local and state incentives.

Medina County’s business community continues to see tremendous growth, particularly by innovative companies that have found new market niches and opened new product lines during the past year. Through a variety of partnerships, MCEDC supports businesses’ growth, allocating resources to those who need help expanding their businesses.

The Key to Stability

To combat workforce shortages and to build the county labor pool, MCEDC has created and strengthened programs aimed at keeping our high school graduates in Medina County to start their careers. Since 2022, our career coach has helped over 3,000 students explore career interests, connect to prospective employers, and find career opportunities. To support new graduates in their career paths, we developed a program awarding scholarships to students who have gained employment immediately following high school graduation to aid them in acquiring the necessary tools to start their career. This year we awarded $1,000 scholarships to sixteen students, adding to the 23 scholarships in the prior two years.

Our Pre-Apprentice program is certified by Apprentice Ohio and provides an opportunity for students to gain soft skills, learn about careers

in Medina County, and ultimately earn two graduation seals for completing the program. In the first three years of the Pre-Apprenticeship program, 275 students have earned their graduation seals. MCEDC’s work is also paving the way for new developments on sites with existing infrastructure that had fallen into disrepair. The first round of state grants for brownfield redevelopment awarded in 2022 provided $4.5 million for 11 building demolition projects through 2024 that have led to over $58 million in new construction, renovations, and clean land for either future development or permanent open space for community enjoyment. MCEDC is working on another $2.5 million in grants that will support the construction of the new Legacy Hotel and a new Meijer store in the City of Medina, among other projects, that will result in over $40 million in new capital investments.

The Medina County Economic Development Corporation is here to support all businesses and help them meet their goals. If you are a company that would like to discuss your plans, business development resources, or talent acquisition and retention, visit MCEDC at www.medinacounty.org or call our office at 330-722-9215.

If you or someone you know is one of those people, please know we have great jobs right here in Medina County, ready and waiting!

Greetings fellow Medina County residents! I am honored to have the opportunity to share a short message about the amazing things going on in Medina County School Districts. In 2023 the Ohio Department of Education (now Department of Education and Workforce) released the 2023 Ohio School Report Cards, and Medina County was ranked number one in the state by average overall stars (4.5 out of 5) by county! The School Report card, which now awards stars to individual schools and school districts, ranked Medina County School Districts as follows: Highland 5 stars, Brunswick 4.5 stars, Buckeye 4.5 stars, Cloverleaf 4.5 stars, Medina 4.5 stars, Wadsworth 4.5 stars, and Black River 4 stars. These rankings do not happen by accident - it is a testament to the amazing educators and the support of the families across Medina County.

The collaboration and support do not end with educators and families. In fact, our schools are at the forefront of workforce development by working with the Medina County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC). Schools are the foundation of the community and businesses - and our collaboration continues to provide opportunities for students beyond the classroom walls. Our county is one of a handful that employs a specific career coach - who bridges the gap between schools and businesses to help connect students to career opportunities. Our schools worked with the MCEDC to develop a pre-apprenticeship program that helps students learn the soft skills needed to be successful in the workplace. We are also working through our Business Advisory Council to better connect businesses to the classroom to support teachers through unique resources and, most importantly, provide students an insight into opportunities that can help provide information so they can make better-educated decisions about their future.

To be sure, each of Medina County School Districts embodies the spirit and values of their individual communities in the educational and extracurricular opportunities they provide. People from all walks of life are passionate about what their schools represent and the environment and support provided to students as they grow throughout their educational journey. They care about the education their children receive and they care about the

Amazing Things Are Going On!

outcome - because Preschool through Twelfth Grade is just the beginning of the lives of the next generation. I am proud to say that each of the schools in Medina County is preparing our children and young adults to become successful in all arenas including military, industry, and post-secondary education. On behalf of the schools in Medina County - thank you for your support! And to all the educators across the county whose efforts go above and beyond for our childrenthank you for preparing the next generation to be successful citizens!

Simplifying the Process

Hiring a general contractor for construction, additions, or renovations simplifies the process significantly. These experts manage all aspects of a project, ensuring every detail is handled efficiently. They offer comprehensive services and have a network of subcontractors to expedite timelines.

A general contractor reduces stress by managing building permits, inspections, and subcontractor coordination. They carry insurance, protecting property owners from liability for accidents. Additionally, their relationships with suppliers often result in cost savings and timely access to materials, preventing delays.

With a general contractor, clients benefit from having a single point of contact overseeing the budget, timeline, and scope, ensuring clear communication and informed

decisions. Their services are customized to meet the project’s specific needs, guaranteeing the client’s vision is realized. Experienced contractors provide valuable feedback throughout the process, addressing issues promptly and ensuring desired outcomes.

Hiring a reputable general contractor, such as Titan Construction and Repair, which offers various construction services and has a long history

of trust, ensures a successful and well-managed project. Visit www.titanconstructionandrepair.com for more information or to request a free quote.

An Ounce o f Prevention

As a homeowner, it is important to maintain the exterior of your house and surroundings. Algae, mold and other contaminants can cause severe damage to your property if not properly cared for.

In the case of decks, fences or other wooden structures, homeowners must clean and stain them regularly to protect against moisture and UV damage. Consider using a professional wood restoration company, as there is chemistry involved to ensure long-lasting results. If an improper cleaner is used, the wood's pH will not be balanced, resulting in premature coating failure. And choosing the proper stain is a science in itself, with so many options to choose from.

Medina Meow Fix is making lives better for our community and the cats living in it.

Kitten Season - it’s something most of us have heard about for as long as we can remember. Unfortunately, with the shift to warmer winters and the already soaring numbers of unaltered cats, Kitten Season has turned into an all-year nightmare for these cats and the communities they live in. Enter Medina Meow Fix (MMF).

MMF assists community members in achieving population and illness control of feral, free-roaming and abandoned domesticated cats with the utilization of trap, neuter and return (TNR) in the Medina County area. In the less than three years since being established, they’ve already helped over 3,000 cats.

Why TNR? Grounded in science, TNR stops the breeding cycle of cats and enhances their lives while preventing reproduction. With successful TNR programs, the lives of feral cats and their relationships with the people who live near them improve as the size of colonies decreases naturally over time.

MMF also ensures kittens and cats who are friendly and socialized to people are transferred to a partner rescue to be placed for adoption.

If you’d like to learn more about MMF and how you can help cats in your community, visit www.medinameowfix.org

In the case of vinyl siding and roofs, proper cleaning will remove unhealthy and unsightly mold spores and algae. With concrete driveways and patios, regular washing and sealing will reduce cracking caused by ice expansion and will eliminate slippery, algae-ridden areas. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to your home's exterior! For a free estimate or for more information on keeping your outdoor space clean and protected, call Deck Rescue at 888-949-3625, or visit www.deckrescue.net.

A Farm in the City

In May 2022, Medina County Park District (MCPD) and its nonprofit partner, Friends of Medina County Parks, Inc. (FOTP) became stewards of the ‘farm in the city’; a property on Route 18 owned by Mr. Edson J. Brown and Mr. Ross M. Trump, both prominent antique dealers.

It was Brown and Trump’s wishes that their Medina Township property be preserved as a working farm for cultural, educational, and aesthetic purposes, as a green gateway to the city of Medina and a way to balance encroaching commercial development, as a museum and historical site, and as a community space that inspires future generations.

In 2023, MCPD entered into a ten-year lease with Hope Recovery Community (HRC), a Medina-based nonprofit that provides recovery housing for men with substance use disorder. This signified the unofficial start of the Brown-Trump Homestead. HRC is dedicated to increasing

sustained recovery by providing hope, support, advocacy, and resources to those impacted by addiction. The nonprofit receives funding from Medina County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Board.

In place of rent, HRC is responsible for maintaining the residential house, which increased the organization’s housing program by nearly 43 percent. HRC leads agricultural programming on the grounds and also develops several workforce tracts for the residents of the house and local recovery community. In the first year of the farm, Feeding Medina County received more than 1,000 pounds of produce grown at the Brown-Trump Homestead.

Although the Brown-Trump Homestead is not open daily to the general public, there will be opportunities for special events and tours in the future.

For more information visit www.medinacountyparks.com/ index.php/en/parks/brown-trump-homestead.

Medina County Park District connects people with nature through education and conservation, managing more than 8,400 acres that include 22 open sites, over 50 trails, two nature centers, several multipurpose trails, and Ohio’s largest natural inland

lake -- Chippewa Lake. Visitors can enjoy cycling, sledding, crosscountry skiing, boating, paddle sports, horseback riding, and more. Open-air and enclosed shelters can be reserved for events large and small. The park district offers a range of public programs for all ages and interests -- almost all of them free -- including an environmental education curriculum aligned with Ohio Department of Education learning standards.

The park district’s boundaries include all of Medina County except Hinckley Township, which is part of the Cleveland Metroparks system. A three-member board of commissioners, appointed by the probate judge of Medina County, governs the park district. The commissioners, who serve without compensation, appoint the park district director. The director, in turn, hires the staff that oversees day-to-day operations.

Visit MedinaCountyParks.com to register for programs, download trail maps, reserve shelters, and much more. In addition, the park district recently launched a new website dedicated to Chippewa Lake. Visit www.ChippewaLakeOhio.com for information about activities, rules on the water, partnerships, map of the lake, and the master plan for Chippewa Lake. You can also follow the park district on these social media sites: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn.

Residential Campus

On October 16, 2023, Recycle Medina County, aka the Medina County Solid Waste District, opened our new Residential Campus. The goal when designing and constructing the residential campus was two-fold; (1) to separate the residential traffic from the commercial haulers; and (2) to eliminate lines of traffic on Saturdays, which resulted in back-ups all the way to Route 224.

RECYCLING

Our recycling bins are accessible at the entrance to our facility. Residents no longer have to come across the scale just to utilize the recycling bins.

BULK WASTE/TRASH

Residents now have a safe way of disposing of bulk trash and scrap metal, away from commercial traffic. Our residential campus is open for bulk waste and trash customers Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

SPECIALTY WASTE FACILITY

Residents now have a drive-through area to drop off specialty and hazardous waste such as appliances containing Freon, paints, pesticides, batteries, fluorescent bulbs, spent electronics, and scrap tires. For a full list of items taken and disposal costs, please visit our website at www.recyclemedinacounty.com. Our Specialty Waste Facility is open Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. – noon.

YARD WASTE

(clean vegetation, branches, twigs, leaves, grass clippings)

Residents with yard waste must still enter at the commercial entrance

Finding Your Roots

where your grandparents or great-grandparents lived and worked? Were they farmers or tailors? Grocers or sailors? Did they immigrate to the US? Maybe you could be a member of Royalty! Geneticists have determined that Charlemagne, who ruled from 768 to 814, is an ancestor to everyone living today with European ancestors. Are you one of them? Becoming involved with your family’s genealogical history can provide a wealth of information. But beware! You may discover some bad news with the good.

Large families were common. Many stayed in the same area. Others had family members who left for “greener” pastures. Brothers and sisters named their children after other family members and the names passed down many generations. How can you identify your ancestors with the right parents?

The Medina County Genealogical Society (MCGS) can help! Formed in 1976, MCGS was established to assist not only members but the public as well. The mission of the Society is to promote the preservation of family history, the preservation of and availability of Medina County historical records, and public awareness of the value of preserving the past for the future.

To accomplish this Mission, we provide genealogical research services of Medina County records, hold meetings with educational programs, and provide guidance to those searching their family histories. We promote good genealogical practices and administer Medina County Lineage Societies (First Families of Medina County, Settlers and Builders of Medina County, and Century Families of Medina County).

Visit our website at www.medinacoogs.org for more information. Come join us and maybe we can help you find your ancestors!
