When my wife and family moved here to Brunswick after the start of the new millennium, we were excited to be moving to a new and growing city. After living in this wonderful community for over 20 years, I can honestly say that Brunswick is where it all comes together!

The city employees are dedicated to the service of the people of Brunswick. We have many dedicated people here at City Hall who do exceptional work, and their number one priority is to serve you!

Our vibrant community of 35,000 people is strategically located along I-71, between Cleveland and Akron. This makes Brunswick an ideal spot for businesses. City Hall is always ready to assist companies in relocating, expanding, and thriving here.

We boast an excellent school system, with convenient access to Cuyahoga Community College and the University of Akron’s Medina County University Center, either within the city or very close by.

Over the past sixteen years, our city has become a medical mecca.

Brunswick has so many beautiful parks! Our newest one, Brunswick Lake Park, is home to the Susan Hambley Nature Center, named after my former colleague on Council. Also, the Brunswick Recreation Center offers members numerous opportunities to stay fit, stay healthy, and stay connected to the community.

Where It All Comes Together

ow taxes provided the main impetus to bring Mayor Ron Falconi and his wife, Genevive, to Brunswick in 2001. In the ensuing 23 years, Medina County’s most populous town has proven to be the perfect community in which to raise a family, with a convenient location, ample dining and shopping options, and a diversity of recreational opportunities for people of all ages, the mayor said.

“We were looking for homes here and in Cuyahoga County and we calculated that we would save a lot of money by moving to Brunswick,” Falconi recalled. “It just turned out to be a good fit. Our son was just born when we moved in and we were expecting our second child at the time, and we found it to be a small-town, tight-knit community with all the amenities for a new family. We’re close enough to Downtown [Cleveland] or Akron if I need to be there, but far enough away from the big cities, and the airport is just a hop, skip, and a jump away as well. So Brunswick is in the middle of everything.

Brunswick’s most important component, Falconi insisted, is its residents.

“We have such a great mixture of people here,” he said.

“There are people who have been here for a couple generations and then there are people like me who have been here around 20 years, then the newer residents. Together, we are a very tight-knit community that bands together to support one another.”

The closeness of the community has been illustrated in the past decade or so when it banded together after local tragedies like a car accident that took the lives of four teens on the eve of their high school graduation and an apartment fire that left residents homeless. More recently Falconi noted, residents have united to oppose a proposed highway interchange at I-71 and Boston Road, the city’s northern boundary. “People of different political affiliations who sometimes oppose each other on City Council are working together to support and unite behind residents who are afraid of losing their homes and who are concerned about how the interchange will change the nature of our community,” Falconi said.

“Even people whose homes wouldn’t be directly impacted by the interchange are coming together to support their neighbors.”

Brunswick, which incorporated in 1960, is the largest city in Medina County with a population of about 35,000 residents. The 13-squaremile town is strategically

located right on I-71, which provides convenient access for workplace commuters as well as businesses that rely on highway transportation, Falconi noted. “We are one of the few cities with industrial parks right next to an interstate highway,” he said. “If you’re a business, obviously you want to be where the action is.”

Brunswick’s retail and commercial zones — primarily

located along routes 42 and 303 — are bustling centers of activity that continue to expand. “We’re excited about the way the community has been growing over the past year,” the mayor said. “I’ve been to numerous ribbon cuttings already this year.

Post-pandemic, everything seems to be trying to get back to normal.”

Falconi noted that Brunswick has plenty of shopping options, with supermarkets like the Meijer supercenter, which opened in 2022, and Giant Eagle — as well as ample dining spots.

Among the new restaurants to open in Brunswick is Mission BBQ, a patriotically-themed eatery. On the south end of the city, Market 42, a multicultural mixed-use market is expected to open this fall, according to Nick Kyriazis, the project’s developer.

Located on Route 42 just north of Sleepy Hollow Road, Market 42 is modeled somewhat after Cleveland’s famous West Side Market, with about 30 vendors, a seasonal farmer’s market and restaurants — with the addition of 18 townhouses and a nature trail through adjacent wetlands, Kyriazis said.

“It’s an exciting project and I think it’s going to be a good addition to that corridor there,” he said. “In the city’s five year plan, they want to transform that corridor into a commercial area and I think this project will spearhead more of development in the area. I thought it would be a good idea to put something there to bring in fresh local produce and meats and also have restaurants where people from Brunswick, Medina and Strongsville can come to.”

Balancing out the city’s commercial zones, Brunswick also has about 350 acres of parkland, made up of 23 community and neighborhood parks. Notable among them is 75-acre Brunswick Lake Park, which features a one-mile walking trail with two boardwalks encircling the lake. The trail provides easy walking access to the Susan Hambley Nature Center, which is operated

Exciting changes are unfolding in our district! In May

2023, voters approved a construction bond, launching the final phase of the Brunswick City School District (BCSD) Master Facilities Plan. This approval allowed BCSD to leverage $42.6 million in state funds, significantly reducing the project’s cost to taxpayers in our community. The bond funds several major initiatives: building a new high school, demolishing Towslee Elementary and Willetts Middle School, adding parking lots and classrooms at Kidder and Applewood, relocating the Maintenance Department and Board of Education, and enhancing the new high school campus. Importantly, these construction funds come exclusively from the bond, as Ohio law separates operating levies from construction projects.

A Pathway to a Better Life Amidst the changes in the workforce and higher education through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) emphasizes the importance of helping students build prosperous and purposeful lives. That importance was reiterated by the inauguration of the College’s fifth president, Michael A. Baston, on April 14, 2023.

During his candidacy, Baston made three promises for his presidency:

Construction Commission (OFCC) to design and build the new school. In late September, a Community Educational Visioning session garnered feedback from stakeholders about the design and function of the new building.

Currently, TDA is in the schematic design phase, finalizing the school’s footprint, infrastructure, utilities, and layout. Input from students, staff, and the community remains a top priority.

In early May, BCSD hosted a Community Construction Update where attendees received updates on the design process, interior layout, and construction timeline. A “visual preference activity” allowed community feedback on the exterior design, and over 1,000 survey submissions were collected via social media for those who couldn’t attend.

This spring marked a significant milestone as Willetts Middle School and Towslee Elementary School underwent abatement, and demolition began. The new high school will be built on the Towslee campus. BCSD collaborated with the Brunswick Historical Society to preserve meaningful artifacts and offered community members bricks from Towslee to keep as mementos. Site work will continue this summer on the Willetts and Towslee properties to prepare for the new Maintenance Department and high school construction.

In addition to our schools’ physical transformations, this year showcased remarkable achievements! Sixteen Brunswick High School students embarked on an ambitious fundraising campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). As part of the LLS Student Visionaries of the Year program, they

Through innovative events and community outreach, they garnered immense local support. Their dedication paid off, raising over $85,000 — a testament to their commitment and the generosity of Brunswick residents. Only two student groups in northeast Ohio raised more. Additionally, team captain Maggie Romano earned the Pillar of Research Award from LLS. BCSD prioritizes transparent, strategic spending. In the spring, the BCSD Treasurer’s Department earned the Auditor of State Award for the fourth consecutive year. This prestigious award recognizes exceptional financial reporting and compliance with fiscal laws, awarded to less than six percent of public entities. During a recent visit to the district, Auditor of State Keith Faber praised BCSD for its extraordinary achievement and commended the district for being a leader in fiscal management.

BOUNDLESS CONFECTION CONNECTION BAKERY, a nonprofit wholesale bakery, celebrated their first anniversary on Friday, June 28. They held an open house at their bakery which is located at 3819 Center Road in Brunswick. They were joined by many members of the community who support their mission and have purchased their tasty treats.

Confection Connection is unique because of its dedication to creating an accessible and inclusive work environment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Their mission is to help each person learn valuable vocational skills in the workplace and build healthy relationships with each other while they bake

so they can gain employment in the general community.

“When the bakers started most of them needed one-on-one assistance and now, they are almost all completely independent in the kitchen,” said Elizabeth Fox-Woodcock, Confection Connection Bakery Operations Manager.

The Confection Connection menu offers a variety of treats like cookies, mini bundt cakes, turnovers, muffins, and mini cheesecakes. To place an order for your next event, you can either call the bakery at 330-641-2531 or place an order online at iamboundless.org/bakery.

Have you heard the news? Farming with Friends is a new nonprofit with operations based on an 87-acre farm in Hinckley.

Farming with Friends’ mission is to restore God’s creation through regenerative farming, employment of people with disabilities, and community engagement.

With community engagement in mind, the Farming with Friends team would like to invite you to join us for Fun on the Farm: An Ability Inclusive Event. This event will be hosted on the farm at 1438 Center Rd. Hinckley, on Saturday, October 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is a Free, Family-Friendly event intended for both typically-abled

people and people with disabilities, and will feature hay rides, pumpkin painting, egg tossing, a pie eating contest, a chili cook-off, pumpkin shotput, live music, and many more entertaining activities. Volunteers collect, sort, and distribute gently used and new clothing items donated by generous community members. This initiative ensures that recipients can dress appropriately for various seasons, job interviews, school, and everyday life, helping them to feel confident and valued.

Beyond meeting physical needs, Woven with Promise fosters a spirit of compassion and community. Volunteers often engage with recipients, offering a listening ear and a kind word, embodying the love and grace of Christ.
