W

ith 21 counties in our coverage area, it’s no surprise that our region has plenty of outdoor experiences for you to enjoy. When it comes to fresh produce, there is ample opportunity to buy at local farmers markets. Even better, our region has everything from fresh fruit such as strawberries and peaches to flowers, pecans, and Christmas trees. Our Western region is home to all things fruit with Eckert’s and Braeutigam’s just miles apart in Belleville. At these farms you’ll find fresh fruit such as strawberries and apples. Once the leaves start to fall, you can pick your own pumpkins fresh for carving. If you’ve had your fill of fruit, head south to Prairie du Rocher and visit Illinois Country Harvest. Their build-your-own bouquets of native Illinois flowers make for a beautiful centerpiece in your home. The Central region is home to one of our more unique farms: Voss Pecans. Located outside of Carlyle, this family farm has grown and sold pecans for over 30 years. In Centralia, you can visit Schwartz Orchard for apples, peaches, pumpkins, and more. We recommend trying the apple cider donuts!

Finally, our Eastern region is home to all things floral. L&A Family Farms in Paris has a sunflower maze that is a photo-worthy backdrop for your socials. They also offer a pumpkin patch and corn maze when the weather cools off. Wild Child Flower Farm in Sumner has, you guessed it, flowers! They’ve turned their flower farm into an experience with morning yoga amongst the flowers, seasonal markets, and more.

Overcome obstacles such as “Electroshock Therapy,” where you cross through a field of wires that have 10,000 volts crackling through them. Or try to make it up “Everest,” a 13’ greased quarter pipe. Competitors will have to help one another to complete the race, making this the ultimate adventure. The Enjoy Illinois 300 NASCAR Cup Series event is a full weekend of fun for race fans and delivers the biggest and best racing action of the season. Last year’s checkered flag went to Kyle Busch. Who will celebrate in Victory Lane in 2024? This year’s race will be held June 1st-2nd and again features the Confluence Music Festival, bringing a mix of genres and stages to this multiday event. The first two editions of this can’t miss date have sold out, so make sure to order your tickets today! Attendees also have the option to upgrade their purchase with the Gateway Garage Experience, which grants fans access to the infield fan zone with up-close views of the garages, teams, and race cars for the ultimate race weekend experience. Formula DRIFT is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. On July 18th-20th watch as professional drivers execute controlled sideway slides through a marked course. Rather than being all about speed, style matters in this event as these skilled drivers push their cars to the limit. Each year the NTT INDYCAR Series Bommarito Automotive Group 500 draws a huge crowd, and for good reason. On August 17th, fans will enjoy an action-packed day, where they can see all the cars and stars of the IndyCar Series on the WWTR oval. Watch as drivers navigate the track in open-wheel cars just inches away from their competitors, while reaching speeds of more than 200 mph. The world’s fastest drag cars will return to WWTR for the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series September 27th-29th. Simply put, these cars are amazing. They make 11,000 horsepower, complete passes at speeds of over 330 mph, and if all goes right, do it all in less than four seconds. Every ticket is a pit pass and the access is second to none, so make sure to roam the midway and the pits to get up close and personal with all the teams. There is no better way to get into the holiday spirit than to gather your friends and family and experience WonderLight’s Christmas at WWTR. Operating from mid-November through December 31st, take the two-mile drive around the track’s infield with more than one million lights synced up to your favorite Christmas tunes.

CELEBRATE THE

SOLAR ECLIPSE W

hether you’re from Downstate or have never been, there’s no better reason to visit than for the 2024 Solar Eclipse. On April 8th, 2024 the path of totality cuts through our region, and communities are gearing up to make the most of it.

WHAT IS A SOLAR ECLIPSE? A solar eclipse is when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking out the Sun. Though the eclipse will be passing through Illinois midday, the sky will turn dark as if it is dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, viewers in the path of totality will be able to see the Sun’s outer atmosphere - the corona - which is typically obscured. Western: The solar eclipse cuts through the southern part of our Western region and fully encompasses Randolph County. Here you’ll find historic stops like Fort de Chartres in Prairie du Rocher and the home of Popeye the Sailor Man in Chester.

1 0 | D I S C OVER D OW N STAT E IL L IN OIS | DOWNSTATEIL .ORG

Central: In our Central region, Washington, Perry, and Marion counties are hosting various events to celebrate the eclipse. Visit the town of Kinmundy - home to the historic Log Cabin Village - as they host their “In the Shadow of the Moon” event. This event features on-site food trucks, nightly bonfires, family entertainment, and more. Eastern: The Eastern region is the place to be during the solar eclipse. Our counties Wayne, Clay, Richland, Clark, Lawrence, Cumberland, Jasper, and Crawford will offer great views of the eclipse. The communities in these regions are gearing up for the big day and many are hosting their own eclipse-related events. In Clark, visit Casey to see twelve of the World’s Largest Things. Visit our website for more information on the upcoming solar eclipse events hosted by our communities.

o matter who you are, it’s likely you’ve heard the phrase “Save the bees” in the last few years. Husband and wife Taylor and Aimee Zurliene are doing just that. In Spring 2016, the couple started keeping bees. Since then, their business Z’s Bees Honey has grown into a local success, serving the community at both Vine Street Market and the New Baden Farmers Market.

LEARN

Z’s Bees

When the family first started their business, Taylor Zurliene, a high school teacher at Wesclin Senior High School and mayor of New Baden, wanted to be directly involved in agriculture. “Keeping bees was a low capital avenue that I could take,” he explains. “My grandparents were dairy farmers and I have a degree in Plant and Soil Science, so I have always been working for someone else. Keeping bees was our way to have our own business but also have direct involvement in the ag industry.” Since they started keeping bees, they have expanded to keep hives in Trenton, New Baden, and New Memphis. Their product offerings have grown exponentially since then as well. “All of our products contain some component of the hives whether it be honey or beeswax,” Zurliene explains. “It’s amazing what can be done by simply utilizing the benefits of our hive products whether it is through direct consumption of the honey or applying it to the skin through the bath and body line.”

"All of our products contain some component of the hives whether it be honey or beeswax.” “The paw balm can also be applied before a walk to help create a protective barrier from the harsh elements.” One of the highlights of the Zurliene family’s time as business owners has been community outreach. When asked what the best part of running Z’s Bees has been, Zurliene answered, “Being able to interact with others and share our passion for not only the bees but agriculture in general. Many people have heard how the honeybee population has been struggling, but being able to further explain and educate the general public on the reasons and how they can help the bees has been rewarding.” If you want to learn more about honeybees and how you can help, Z’s Bees can be found at local markets. They even do visits to schools, daycares, and libraries. For more information on their products, visit their website:

Their products include raw honey, comb honey, whipped soap, whipped sugar scrub, lip balm, body butters, and more. If you’re looking for a unique, ecofriendly gift for the holidays, they offer their extensive line of products along with specialized gift boxes. They even have something for your four-legged friends. “Our paw balm is 5 simple ingredients that help chapped paws and noses,” Zurliene explains.

LongStory Coffee

E

rik Busch – owner and head roaster at LongStory Coffee in Belleville – never intended to open a coffee shop. His experience in the craft beer world motivated him to start his own craft brewing business. When that fell through, he turned to coffee.

“Over ten years ago, I decided to pursue a career in the craft beer industry,” Busch explained. He and a business partner started planning their own brewery. They were very close to opening, having found a location, equipment, and more. “Unfortunately, life happens, and my investor had to pull out last minute which caused my partner to pull out as well.” In explaining the brewery falling through to family and friends, Busch continually said “It’s a long story.” One of his friends responded,

"It makes every day exciting when I know I get to wake up and see these people on a regular basis, and I hope that I make a little impact on how their day is going with a simple cup of coffee.” “That’s a way better name for a brewery than your other name.” After that conversation, Busch filed LongStory as a business name and sat on it. His interest in coffee didn’t start until his father-in-law gifted him a tabletop coffee roaster. Busch instantly fell in love with roasting coffee. He started roasting so often that he and his wife couldn’t keep up consuming the amount of coffee that was being roasted. LongStory Coffee had its successful debut at Schlafly’s Winter Market in February 2020. When COVID hit in March, Busch had to readjust his strategy and started selling his coffee online. Two years later, Busch’s dream of owning a brick-and-mortar became a reality. “To my luck and surprise, the local café/ roastery in Belleville – Balance Coffee – was closing so the owners could move to Arkansas.” Busch signed the lease in March 2022 and the renovations began. Today, you can find LongStory at an 1800s train depot in Belleville. Busch converted and updated the space to include a kitchen for Clara B’s – another Belleville business – to sell delicious southern-inspired brunch. Additionally, LongStory roasts their own coffee in-house. Whether you prefer lattes or want to branch out and try one of their rotating nitro cold brew options, there is something for everyone. If you’re looking for a sense of community and a great cup of coffee, head to LongStory in Belleville. LongStory just celebrated their 1st birthday in December 2023 and have big things in store for the new year including a podcast called LongStory Short, launching an exclusive coffee club, and more. To keep up to date with all things LongStory, be sure to follow their Instagram and Facebook profiles: @LongStoryCoffee. Museums

Historical Sites AND

Downstate Illinois is full of rich history. We have gathered 10 museums and historical sites that we invite you to visit and learn from!

S

tep back to the early 1930s and feel what it would have been like for the world-famous jazz musician Miles Davis to grow up in his childhood home in East St. Louis. The House of Miles not only has a lot of artifacts from Miles’ life including instruments, clothes, and artwork but it also embodies the spirit of his work. This museum is part of a non-profit that invests in giving back to the community and educating kids outside of school. Get up close to the workhorses of the Air Mobility Command at the Scott Field Heritage Air Park just outside of the Scott Air Force Base in Shiloh. There are five aircraft currently on display that honor and commemorate significant events through the decades. Not only is the World Shooting & Recreational Complex in Sparta home to the World’s Longest trap line with over 120 trap fields, but it also boasts the Trapshooting Hall of Fame. With almost 200 inductees honored and artifacts that go back to the beginning of trapshooting, this hall of fame is truly unique and worth the visit! Since 2002, the American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville has been collecting and preserving farm equipment from all generations to help promote and educate the heritage of rural life. The museum is now home to thousands of hand tools, tractors, plows, a railroad, and so much more that is on display during their multiple events throughout the year. Be sure to visit Hill’s Fort, also on the property, and learn of its importance in opening the Northwest Territory. In Greenville, take a look at some of the world’s oddities created by the DeMoulin Bros. & Co. at the DeMoulin Museum. Take a crack at throwing knives, see how you fare with the electric branding iron, and look up at the guillotine! This rare collection of DeMoulin lodge initiation devices and marching band uniforms made by DeMoulin is worth a look. With over 17,000 square feet of exhibit space, the Illinois Rural Heritage Museum in Pinckneyville has plenty to learn from. With antiques dating back to 1850, you will get a glimpse of what life was like in early Illinois.

Illinois Oil Field Museum

The Standin' Proud Veterans Tribute

Scott Field Heritage Air Park

A newer museum to our region honors local veterans. The Standin’ Proud Lincoln Douglas Veterans Tribute in Bartelso showcases Debate Museum an F350 truck with airbrushed images from operations in the Middle East. This museum also includes items donated by local veterans and their families involved in conflicts from Iraq and Afghanistan to Vietnam. One of the foundations of early Illinois was oil, and while you can still find oil pumpjacks across Downstate Illinois, this part of Illinois history is often forgotten. However, in Oblong, those that volunteer at the Illinois Oil Field Museum are eager to teach that history and help keep it alive and well! Since 1961, this museum has been showing off tools and artifacts that were used to propel Illinois to one of the biggest oil producers in the U.S. around the 1940s. When we look back in history, we often think of how much harder life was and that is usually showcased in our museums, but at the Carnegie Museum in Olney, items show how life became easier. On display, you can find early versions of the washing machine, sewing machines, medical devices, and more that show the birth of the technology that we use today. Displays also include items linked to Richland County’s military heritage and a lesson on why the Great Depression affected the county much differently than the rest of the country.

American Farm Heritage Museum

Visit one of the sites of the Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas debates in Charleston at the Lincoln Douglas Debate Museum. On your selfguided tour, learn about all seven senatorial debates between the two politicians in 1858. Included in the museum are life-size sculptures, multiple exhibits, and a children’s hands-on area.

Miller MadeCrafts

O

ne of the great things about being the largest Convention and Visitors Bureau geographically in the state is that we are never short of unique makers. Jacob Miller, of Miller Made Crafts, pursued what started as a hobby at the start of January 2023 and his business has grown exponentially ever since.

“Through the years I would get asked to build custom picture frames and small cabinets and such. It was not until one year ago that I needed a cutting board for my kitchen and wanted a specific design,” he explains, “I made one and did not like it, made a second and did not like it either; thus, I posted them on Facebook for sale. The next thing I knew, I had a couple dozen people wanting cutting boards in October for the upcoming holidays. Since then, it has been steadily snowballing to a point I decided to make my hobby into an actual entity.” All Miller Made creations start with getting wood from a local sawmill. From there, Miller creates items such as rolling pins, cutting boards, picture frames, and more. If you can dream it, Miller Made Crafts can create it. Miller credits his family background and experience as a participant in 4H as his inspiration for Miller Made Crafts. “Working with my hands is my passion, whether it be in the shop at the farm, the hog barn, or in the woodshop,” he states, “Since I was a wee lad, I have been this way and my projects made in 4H showcase that. Watching my dad and grandpa do woodworking sparked something in me as a kid and I have always been trying to imitate that with projects in 4H. 4H played a major developmental role in my life with helping me pursue my woodworking hobby by improving and surpassing myself with each project.”

Miller Made Crafts calls the town of Marshall home and has found itself at various markets throughout the year. “The support from my local community is absolutely amazing!” He tells us, “With Marshall starting a farmers market throughout the summer, it has led to growth for many small businesses like myself. The way the community has supported me as a customer base to spread my name and work and working with other small businesses has been a wonderful feeling.” If you’d like to purchase your very own Miller Made creation, visit their Facebook page at:
