Birds: & Bees

LongStory Coffee, Belleville

At LongStory Coffee, sustainability isn’t just a global cause—it’s poured into every cup. As the first in the Midwest to join the Smithsonian’s exclusive 100% organic Bird Friendly Coffee certification, they’re brewing more than just exceptional coffee; they’re brewing change. From bean to brew, their dedication to sustainability reflects a passion for both environmental integrity and fair practices at every step. This revolutionary program is reshaping the coffee industry from the ground up—literally.

Twenty-five years ago, the Smithsonian Bird Friendly Program uncovered something alarming: conventional coffee farming practices were upending local biodiversity. But, on farms where coffee grew in harmony with nature, biodiversity flourished, doubling in comparison and thriving in a balanced ecosystem.

When Erik, the owner of LongStory Coffee, traveled to Colombia, his mission extended far beyond sourcing beans—

it was about reconnecting with the very origins of coffee. Immersing himself in the lives of local farmers, he built personal relationships so meaningful that you could practically taste the passion in every handshake. In a global trade often defined by distance, Erik brought everything back to the source, reminding us that each sip can forge a powerful and intimate connection.

Exploring lush forests, meeting families who lovingly nurture the land, and strengthening global partnerships born from a shared devotion to sustainability, was the heart of Erik’s transformative journey. It reawakened his unwavering commitment to preserving the planet, proving that this mission is about more than coffee; it’s about creating meaningful, worldwide impact—one personal relationship at a time.

With practices that ensure fair prices, healthier communities, greater biodiversity, and bird habitat protection, Bird Friendly Coffee is more than just a sip; it’s a movement. By sipping LongStory Coffee, you’re not just enjoying a well-crafted brew—you’re helping to shape a sustainable future.

Leave with honey, snacks, and a deeper appreciation for nature’s busy workers!

The farm also grows hay, powered by the manure from its chickens and cows. Talk about recycling at its finest, as the manure comes full circle, nourishing the very crops that feed the animals from which it originated. Kasey welcomes tours from local farm groups or individuals interested in learning more about her operation. She also hosts events, such as yoga sessions, which are announced on her Facebook page. To purchase Neely Farm products or schedule a tour, visit @neelyfarmillinois on Facebook.

Each spring, they plant over 10,000 tulips to kick off the season with a stunning rainbow of blooms, followed by zinnias in every shade—from white to hot pink to lime. Thanks to a carefully staggered planting schedule, these flowers brighten the farm all summer long. Wild Child Flower Farm also fosters biodiversity by creating a refuge for local pollinators like bees and butterflies. If you’re lucky, you might even spot finches lending a hand (or wing) in pollination and pest control, contributing to a balanced ecosystem. In addition to vendor markets, they offer U-pick flowers, letting you bring home a bit of that summer magic. Stay up to date on their events by liking their Facebook page @wildchildflowerfarm.
