CARBONDALE

It’s no secret that Downstate Illinois has a long-standing connection to brewing renowned beers. A rich history steeped in heavy German influence dating back to the 19th century has created an environment that is ripe for modern brewers to express themselves in new and unique ways. Innovative brews abound in the area as Downstate quickly becomes one of the premier craft beer destinations in the region. With so many options to choose from, we created this short list of some of the best breweries in the area that are worth a stop this fall and winter!
Shoehorn Brewing
Shoehorn Brewing in the great-big, small town of Belleville has the brews for you this holiday season. Stop in and have a pint or grab a can to go and keep the good times rolling on your own terms. Their beers, which are artfully crafted to embody a wide variety of brewing styles, range from tangy and sweet wheat sours to thick and cozy porters. As the seasons change, so do the beers at Shoehorn, so get your holiday favorites before they get put back in the vault for the year!

Excel Bottling Co.
While probably best known for their classic lemon-lime soda, Ski, Excel Bottling Co. in Breese also produces a stellar lineup of craft beers that will warm your soul during the holidays. Fall-inspired pumpkin ales and vintage-styled German lagers are just a few yearround flavors that pair perfectly with shorter days and colder weather. This small shop keeps old-school bottling traditions alive, making their beers the perfect drink to accompany your holiday happenings in 2025!

Stubborn German Brewing Company
Nobody embraces Downstate’s strong German roots quite like Stubborn German Brewing Company in Waterloo. Aside from the obviously German-influenced branding of this hometown staple, their year-round production of the ever-popular Stubbornfest Oktoberfest beer cements them as a mainstay within the community. The rest of their beers offer a globetrotting experience, featuring brews influenced by various European traditions and Mexican and American techniques. So, celebrate the holidays the old-world way and enjoy a pint from Stubborn German’s ever-evolving tap list.

Lieferbrau Brewery
Lieferbrau Brewery in Red Bud is a can’t miss year-round destination for beer lovers in Downstate Illinois. With a stunning patio and beer garden in the summer, and cozy old-school feel in the winter, there is never a bad time to swing by and sample any one of their rotating small batch brews. Over the last year, the team at Lieferbrau has poured their blood, sweat, and tears into a complete overhaul renovation that resulted in possibly the best holiday gathering spot in the area. Whether you are looking for rental space for a holiday party, or a quaint spot to pop in for a casual drink, this inviting family-owned brewery should be at the top of your list this holiday season.
Millpond Brewing
Millpond Brewing in Millstadt, began as a passion project and has grown into a beloved community hub. Housed in a thoughtfully renovated 1940s service station, this craft brewery opened its doors in 2019 and quickly became known for its welcoming atmosphere and quality brews. In addition to its signature beers like Old Millstadt and Dunkes Bier, Millpond offers rotating seasonal selections that keep patrons coming back. Guests can enjoy their drinks on the dogfriendly patio, often accompanied by local food trucks, live music, and community events. Whether you're a beer enthusiast or just passing through, Millpond Brewing is well worth a visit.

Sweet, Sweet Victory Daylight Donuts
After a hard-fought contest, Daylight Donuts in Olney has emerged as the winner of the 2025 Annual Downstate Bracket Challenge. This year’s theme was donuts, and the competition was tight. To celebrate their extra-sweet victory, we caught up with the team behind this beloved Eastern region staple to learn more about the people and passion fueling their success.
In a response that was fraught with gratitude, Heather Martin and the team at Daylight expressed just how pivotal the Richland County community was to their success in the challenge. In addressing the flood of digital support that came throughout their victory campaign, “this win isn’t just ours - it’s yours too! Every share, comment, and cheer made a difference, and we truly felt the love,” said Martin. Support wasn’t strictly limited to the digital landscape, either; the Daylight team recalled an outpouring of praise from their amazing customers during their frequent visits to the shop.
It's those same regulars, claims the Daylight crew, that make up the lifeblood of their business. The smiling faces, hungry stomachs, and wholesome interactions are what keep Daylight running day in and day out. In reciprocation, Daylight spreads the love right back. Through a combination of school fundraisers, National Donut Day celebrations, and youth sports sponsorships, this humble hometown breakfast joint is committed to giving back to the community that has helped it thrive. This strong sense of community undoubtedly helped Daylight edge out all other competitors in an exceptionally strong field in 2025.
Participation in this year’s bracket challenge, according to Martin and the Daylight team, helped boost their social media exposure both in town and around the region. This flood of traffic catapulted Daylight Donuts from a wellkept Richland County secret to a must-stop destination for anyone traveling through Eastern Downstate. Weary travelers in need of a delightful fresh donut that was made that morning will rejoice when they cross the threshold of Daylight’s colorfully welcoming dining room.
Though the rush of the competition has ended, the real excitement is just beginning, as we encourage everyone to make their way to Olney to congratulate Daylight Donuts on the victory. Grab a cup of coffee and your favorite style of donut and celebrate this monumental achievement with this year’s Bracket Challenge Champion!
