ABOUT IAGE Mission & Vision The mission of Illinois Abroad and Global Exchange is to offer students quality programs and comprehensive support throughout their education abroad experience. Our vision is to foster intercultural competence and inspire global engagement for students by serving as an innovative and collaborative partner.

Office Structure IAGE is divided into three distinct teams: the Education Abroad Team, the Global Engagement Team, and the Business & Systems Team. Our Director oversees all office staff and services, while extending the mission of Illinois International. The Business and Systems team oversees all financial operations, ensures agreement/contract compliance, and maintains

technical systems. The Education Abroad team oversees day-to-day operations, conducts general office administration, and manages our program portfolio. Finally, the Global Engagement team provides expertise in partner relations, exchange program management, diversity/inclusion initiatives, and marketing.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR As we approach the end of 2020, the world has been forever changed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the U.S. democratic process is being tested, and the systemic racism embedded in our societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s institutions and policies have been revealed starkly, again.

Despite the challenges of this year, we grow in the belief that international education can play a critical role in providing students opportunities to deeply self-reflect on their own cultural backgrounds, to contextualize local events within the global and vice versa, and connect the dots on historical, economic, and technological phenomena. These learning opportunities support our vision of inspiring the development of global competence and engagement in our students.

In March 2020, we facilitated the return of more than 850 students from their education abroad and exchange programs and we have suspended travel through May 2021. Our participation data for this annual report reflects the impact of these constraints. While traditional mobility continues to be curtailed due to the global health pandemic, we remain hopeful and committed to ensuring students have an opportunity for global learning.

Like many other education abroad professionals around the world, at IAGE we realize there are opportunities to innovate and provide virtual global experiences to students through online internships, service-learning, and course exchange, and we look forward to working with units across campus to further develop these programs in the coming months.

IAGE remains dedicated and committed to values of diversity and equity and seek to align our processes, procedures, and programming to support students of color and other underrepresented groups. In future reports, we plan to be accountable for these efforts.

CURRENT LANDSCAPE Our Philosophy Illinois Abroad and Global Exchange (IAGE), the campus study abroad office, facilitates education abroad programs in locations around the world. As the campus study abroad office, our programs are open to students from all academic fields, backgrounds, and identities. We seek to be inclusive in our approach to study abroad and introduce our students to a multi-faceted understanding of their disciplines and a broader set of tools with which to solve complex problems.

Decentralized Model Study abroad at Illinois operates under a decentralized model, by which a campus office (IAGE) serves the entire campus community and the academic colleges manage college-specific study abroad programs. Collaboration amongst all study abroad offices is a top priority in order to provide the best possible support to Illinois students, faculty, and staff.

WHERE WEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;RE GOING Illinois Abroad Implementation Committee The Illinois Abroad Implementation Committee (IAIC) emerged as a key recommendation in the report prepared by the Task Force on Illinois Study Abroad. The committee is jointly appointed by the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost and the Vice Provost for International Affairs and Global Strategies (VPIAGS) and is charged with providing guidance and tactical direction on the implemention of the action items identified by the Task Force report, which includes shifting some centrally-administered study abroad programs into college study abroad operations and transitioning IAGE from a direct program provider to a centralized, coordinated core services unit.

Illinois Global Education Abroad Committee The Illinois Global Education Abroad Committee is a new campus-wide committee formed to complement the continuing work of the Illinois Abroad Implementation Committee and to provide guidance on specific study abroad issues.

The Illinois Global Education Abroad Committee is a newly formed committee with Joy Phaphouvaninh and Allison Witt as Co-Charis. The committee was formed to continue the work identified in the Task Force on Illinois Study Abroad Report and essentially works to replace the IAPC and EAAC. The committee works alongside the Illinois Abroad Implementation Committee to provide direction and guidance related to study abroad. The committee has two major goals: 1. Develop a vision and mission for education abroad at the University of Illinois, guided by the updated Forum on Education Abroad and in alignment with our universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strategic priorities as articulated in The Next 150, as well as college strategic priorities for global education including study abroad. In light of the changing context and emerging redefinition of education abroad, the committee should consider a broader conceptualization of education abroad, inclusive of traditional study abroad programs, virtual opportunities, as well as other global educational experiences.

2. Develop a strategy for diversifying education abroad programmatic offerings both geographically and demographically, with a particular focus on initiatives in the global South and intentional engagement of historically under-represented students.

Customized short-term programs are Illinois courses that are led and taught by faculty or professional staff. These programs are usually are brief in duration and take place during academic breaks.

Providers are organizations (colleges or universities, nonprofit organizations, forprofit businesses, or consortiums) that offer education abroad programs and services to students from a variety of institutions.

Study Abroad at Illinois Illinoisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; vision as a pre-eminent public research university with a land-grant mission and global impact has long centered around offering transformational education abroad experiences. The data on page 8 and 9 captures campus-wide data about program offerings for academic year 2019-20 (fall 2019-summer 2020). 300+ programs were offered in 50+ countries around the globe.

Study Abroad at Illinois Despite having to suspend study abroad programs in the middle of spring semester and the summer term due to COVID-19, Illinois sent over 1,300 student abroad on programs around the globe. Illinois scholarships are awarded based upon level of financial need, academic achievement, and/or status as an underrepresented student.

OFFICE DATA Advising & Resource Center IAGE operates an Advising and Resource Center in order to provide walk-in advising support to prospective participants. The student staff, called Program Assistants, are trained to assist students in choosing a program that aligns with their goals, can answer basic logistic and programmatic questions, and provide insight into the study abroad experience by sharing their own story.

INCOMING EXCHANGE Exchange Programs at Illinois Illinois also welcomes hundreds of exchange students to campus every year through reciprocal exchange agreements that study abroad units have with select partner universities, which in turn host Illinois students on their campuses.

PARTNER RELATIONS Our Commitment to Partnership Part of the mission of IAGE is to serve as an innovative and collaborative partner. We have strong partnerships with units across campus and around the world in order to foster intercultural competence and inspire global engagement from our study abroad students.

Organizational Memberships IAGE is a member of professional organizations who create a set of shared standards, articulate best practices, and recognize excellence in the field of international education. We remain active members by participating in trainings and conferences, utilizing member resources, and aligning IAGE office operations with the standards of best practices.

Institutional Partnerships IAGE partners with institutions to provide exceptional study abroad experiences for Illinois students. We rely on these institutions for their expertise in the local community, caliber of their international educators, and their high quality student support services.

Campus Partners & Collaborations IAGE partners with campus units that support students throughout their study abroad experience in areas such as academics, health, finances, and safety. We also serve as a collaborative partner to put on joint programming and events for prospective and current study abroad and exchange students. Additionally, we provide services, such as course integration, class presentations, program development, budget consulting, and data visualizations for units interested in sharing the study abroad message with their students.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE Student-Centered The student experience is at the center of what we do. The quotes below are taken from the Student Perspectives Questionnaire, a survey that IAGE returnees fill out to tell us about their study abroad experience.

I feel that I engaged greatly with the culture during my time abroad. Right from the beginning once school began, I took the initiative to join a student organization called MUSEX (Melbourne University Student Exchange Society).

Through this club, I was able to meet a lot of other students from all over the world while having the chance to participate in some classic Australian activities over the semester. - University of Melbourne, Australia, Fall 2019

I liked the friends I made the most - I think they are people I will continue to keep in touch with. There is a very diverse group of people that are both studying abroad in Singapore as well as studying in Singapore full time.

I worked in a child development center (like a daycare) and an elderly care facility studying social services. There were many buildings and temples that had that traditional Korean architecture that was so grand and magnificent.
