The footwear industry has evolved over the centuries and this seemingly basic need to protect the feet has become an important part of the nation’s economy.

According to the director, the ongoing crisis of Covid-19 has caused immense damage to the entire footwear industry, particularly that of formal shoes, which is the main highlight of the brand.

Virola Leathers is a family business established in the year 1950. Initially, it was started as a leather trading house in Agra Uttar Pradesh, but gradually it paved its way into footwear manufacturing for the domestic market only to make its presence globally by entering the export footwear market under the name Virola International in 1989.

Now, because of the pandemic, the company plans to get into more product categories, slightly more into casual line, for example, the upcoming Flyknit Collection.”, he said. He further said that the company intends to style comfortable and stylish open footwear, to cater to the demands of the market and attract more and more customers.

Unlike most other consumer categories that either recovered or have seen demand surging after the pandemic-induced lockdown, some discretionary products such as the clothing and footwear industry are still struggling to mop up higher sales.

The business demeanor and understanding of the market trends enabled Virola Shoes to launch their independent shoe venture by the name Alberto Torresi for the Indian domestic market, which came into being in the year 2010.

“The brand started from scratch and increasing the business, the reach of the brand, adding new styles, getting the company up and running is always a journey in itself.”, said Mr. Ishaan Sachdeva, the Director of Alberto Toressi.

Tell us about yourself as an individual.

The wait for the right opportunity might be long, but when it’s there, you should cash in; always strategize the further plans of action, as you should be prepared for whatever comes your way; and last but not the least is healthy competition. Competition exists in all businesses, but it’s got to be healthy, if you indulge in unhealthy competition, it can be destructive for your business.

Ishaan: I, personally, love working. I’ve been a hardworking person all my life and I love taking up challenges, be it in business or personal life. My brand is extremely close to my heart; I have nurtured it, and I’ve never felt my interest declining from what I do. I became an entrepreneur something I never thought of becoming. Instead, I had an idea, I pursued it, and I always had that zest to take our mother business to another level. I always had that pressure on me to keep up the name of Virola and yet, I always wanted to do something better. I saw what it did to my father and the stress he wore on his face just about every day. While becoming an entrepreneur is no less stressful, at least it’s the stress over your stuff and not some organization that just doesn’t care. I know how much care and effort I have put into my work and I didn’t think anyone else would appreciate it as much as I would. I’m always out to be my best employee.

When you think about the initial days as an entrepreneur, what were the hardships on your way as you became a successful entrepreneur?

Ishaan: The growth of my brand was an opportunity for me to grow too. I took every challenge as an opportunity to learn something new; test my abilities and make the best out of everything

How has the journey been of building a brand Alberto Torresi so far?

Ishaan: The most important lessons I learned, building my brand are to wait for the opportunities and grab them as they come.

I was provided with. I got to learn a lot more than I knew when I was starting as an entrepreneur. Coming up with the business mantras that resonate with my passion and reflect my perspective, and be result-oriented at the same time was challenging.

According to you what are the most interesting aspects of becoming an entrepreneur?

Ishaan: Becoming an entrepreneur, in itself, is a challenging process. You have an idea and a plan, but executing it and bringing all the resources together gives you a check of how difficult it is. But the same challenges, on being accomplished give you a feeling of achievement. Another interesting as aspect is, to channel all your ideas, you have a lot of freedom, which brings along a flow of creativity. Your mind starts to master many activities, multitask and it also helps us in our future endeavours.

Why? Ishaan: Both, actually. What is style without comfort?

To increase the sale of the product which aspect would you focus on more, marketing of the product or quality of the product?

What challenges did your brand face in the past year? What measures have you taken during the pandemic to keep the market value intact?

Ishaan: TThe quality of the product always defines its worth, no matter how good the marketing strategy is, your customer will always look for maximum output from what they purchase. The same goes with marketing, if you have a really superior product and you want to put it up on the market, but you don't have a marketing strategy, then you'll have a very limited number of buyers, as the product won't gain popularity, and it will result in less and less sale.

Ishaan: The COVID 19 pandemic is forcing changes in the world. People are living differently, thinking differently, and in many ways buying differently.

Consumers are looking at products and brands through a new lens. The factors that influence brand decisions are also changing as the “Buy Local” trend accelerates. In the footwear category, for the time being, retail stores will see moderate customer footfall but there would be a surge in online sales which is already evident from the current situation and this is how the overall business will reshuffle offline and online. We would continue delivering quality at an affordable value for money pricing. As obvious will also have attractive offers for special occasions and festivals, as need be. As regards our branding and promotions, we will continue our major focus through digital and social media.

What are the most strong aspects of your personality? How do you channel them in your work?

Ishaan: I have always been very ambitious, as a little boy in school, and growing up, I always wanted to know that I had to make it big, no matter the obstacles on my way. My ambition led me here and leads me each and every day because I want to make it even bigger. I would also say that being a positive person, inside and out, has helped me a lot, I always respected the market, was engaged in healthy competition, made a lot of acquaintances in the industry, and that positivity always helps you exceed your own expectations from yourself.

What are your ideas of fun & enjoyment?

Ishaan: Look, every now and then, you do need a detox from your work, no matter how much you love it, you always do want a getaway from it, and it's necessary because taking too much stress never did any man any good. So yeah, I like taking vacations, some days off, spending time with my family, my little ones, I like to play outdoor sports a lot, and it feels therapeutic after a long tiring week/month of work, and it helps your mind stay fresh, you never get that mental fatigue that way.

Dharampal Gulati: (27 March 1923- 3 December 2020) From a school dropout at age of 10 to a successful businessman, Mahashay Dharampal Gulati was referred to as Spice-king He was the founder of MDH spices, a company that sells ready to use ground spices. His father owned a spice shop in Sialkot, Pakistan. He joined his father’s business and helped him expand its branches in various cities in undivided northern India before Independence. In 1947, his family crossed the borders and stayed at a refugee camp in New Delhi.

He was the chairman of the board from 2002 to 2006, after which he also became the Chief Mentor. In August 2011, he retired from the company, taking the title Chairman Emeritus. Mr. Narayan: It was the circumstances and my mother. We are five siblings and all boys. We lost our father when we were in our teens and it was my mother who took all responsibility on her shoulder.

Did you face any criticism from society for sailing against the wind?

Gayatri who is also a software engineer, and our 6-year-old son Dhruv. We came to the USA in November 2017 to Los Angeles county for my wife's job and lived there for about two and half years and currently moved to Texas in February 2020.

Mr: Narayan: Yes very much.

Even though I and my wife were happy to take this decision, our society was constant pressure for us. Some of our society’s people were ready to take care of the kid and they wanted me to work. My mother inspired me saying it's alright nothing wrong with being at home and taking care of the kid and family. We can shape our life how we want and as we want.

Editor: Why did you and your wife decide to sail against the wind and that the husband will be staying at home while the wife will be the main breadwinner?

Mr. Narayan: It's about time. After our son Dhruv was born, my wife had only four months of maternity leave. Back then, I was working from home. I was able to take care of Dhruv with help of my mother and my wife resumed her work when the leaves ended.

Editor: How do both of you generally manage household work like cooking, cleaning, etc., office work, and your kid?

Mr. Narayan: From my teens, I am into cooking for friends and family. I love to cook, and I am good at it as the people who have tasted my food say. My wife takes care of cleaning the house and dishes. Dhruv spends most of the time with me, but he likes her

Editor: How did this decision change your life?

Mr. Narayan: I got to know how retired life will be.

Along with taking care of our kid, I followed my passion and learned music, drawing, play sport, etc.

Mr. Narayan: As I said, I am living my retired life now.

I am enjoying it, I get time to take up my passion in music, arts, and sports. One important thing that I learned is I stopped worrying about society. If you mind them it is impossible to have a wonderful life. I am enjoying the life of dad at home and househusband. You learn a lot by raising a kid.

Finances are one of the most important factors. We have only one account and both have equal shares in it. And again it’s complicated when it comes to using the funds to help your family, siblings, or other relatives who approach you for help. The bottom line is you need a lot of understanding.

Editor: What do you love most about being a stayat-home parent?

I love that I am the boss. Do things at your own pace.

Editor: What advice would you give other couples who have that mindset that it’s only a women’s responsibility to raise the kid?

Respect each other's feelings and capabilities, there is nothing wrong with being a stay at home dad and raise a kid. If your spouse has a better opportunity understand that and let her grab it and you can support her being at home and help raise the kids. Do not bother about society. Some people have come out of it and it does not matter here in the USA. It's your life and family. Live how you want it and not how others want it to be. Understanding and compromises make a happy and better family life.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 c. lime juice 3 tsp. granulated sugar, divided 1 bunch fresh mint 1/4 c. chopped pineapple 1/4 c. quartered strawberries 1/4 c. blueberries, plus more for garnish Ice 6 oz. white rum, divided 1 (12-oz.) can seltzer Pineapple wedge, for garnish Strawberry, for garnish Lime slices, for garnish 1. Among three glasses, divide the lime juice evenly.

Add a teaspoon of sugar to each glass and two mint leaves. Add pineapple to one glass, strawberries to another, an blueberries to the third. Using the back of a wooden spoon, muddle fruit and mint.

I was initially inclined towards choosing a Banquet Hall for my wedding. At that time it seemed the best possible choice – less hassles, well organized, and the safest of the options.

From fancy lighting to chandeliers, carpeted floors (in some cases), air conditioning, decorative wall paper etc etc a banquet hall is mostly a decently done up place. As a result, you don’t have to do overtly too much to decorate your venue.

As I sat to think more about it, a lot of small things came up. But lets look at the good points first…

Pros: Easy Availability

No matter where you live, you will find tons of options available in Banquets all around the city.

From hotels to standalone Banquet Halls, one can opt for whatever option based on the guest list, budget and preference.

More Intimate & Private

As compared to any outdoor venues, a closed banquet hall definitely gives a more intimate feeling. Not to forget, a more formal gathering of sorts. You will see children creating less havoc in a formal banquet hall as compared to in an open lawn where pots might break, chaat plates must be strewn all over etc etc.

Weather Resistant

Irrespective of any weather, you know you have chosen a safe option where nothing can go wrong. A banquet hall is definitely your best bet if you are getting married in monsoons. Its full proof. If you go for any other kind of wedding venue like lawns, terrace, or any other outdoor options – guaranteed, you won’t get 100% dry experience. From leakage on the sides of shaamiana’s (tents) to floors on the corners getting wet – there are lot of issues you might have to deal with on your big day.

Valet Parking If you go for a banquet hall inside a hotel, you are definitely going to have the option of valet parking. It really is a huge advantage if you are living in a metropolitan city like Mumbai where parking is always an issue. You can make as much noise as you want No 10 pm deadline. Sing, dance all night at the loudest of the volumes…and nobody outdoors will have a problem. So if that is the kind of wedding you want – party all night kinds…then by all means…you should give the banquet option a serious consideration.

All n all, this is one of the most hassle free of the wedding venues one can go for.

Now that we have seen all the good points of choosing a Banquet as your wedding venue, lets see if there are any significant drawbacks to choosing this option for your big day !

Not easy to get the ‘ideal’ sized banquet In most cases..you may not get the ideal sized banquet hall…some may be too cramped up, while others may be too big for your crowd.

Getting that perfect sized hall with all your other considerations is quite a herculean task in itself.

The point where it pinches is your pocket – you may have to end up spending more on the rentals to get a bigger place even if you don’t want that much space. No alternative there.

Cons: Done to death already Almost 2 out of 3 weddings in the city will take place in some banquet. High chances that you must have already visited that particular banquet as well. So that leaves with no scope of anything ‘hatke‘ in this option. A banquet doesn’t excite anybody -> it just feels like another wedding one has to go to. So if you don’t want this to happen…then you need to check out the other options…

Done to death a Hidden Costslready While valet parking may seem lucrative enough to seal the deal, make sure you know whether they are charging you exorbitant amounts for this service. Also, find out about any other charges from extra hours, hidden taxes etc etc

Restrictions on Wedding Vendors A Banquet Hall will most definitely have caterers and decorators on their panel. What this essentially means is you cannot get your own caterer or decorator from outside.

INGREDIENTS 1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened 1 1/2 c. sugar 3 large eggs Juice of 3 limes, plus zest of 1 lime 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 2 c. all-purpose flour 3 tbsp. cornstarch 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. kosher salt 1/2 c. milk (preferably whole or 2%)

FOR THE FROSTING 1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened 5 c. powdered sugar 1/4 c. fresh lime juice 1/4 c. tequila Coarse salt, for garnish Lime zest, for garnish Small lime wedges, for garnish

INGREDIENTS Preheat oven to 350° and line two muffin tins with 18 cupcake liners.

In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Add lime juice and zest and vanilla and mix until combined.

In another large bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and salt. Add half the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, beating until just combined. Pour in milk and mix until fully incorporated. Add remaining dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fill cupcake liners 3/4 full with batter.

Bake until slightly golden and a toothpick inserted into center of each cupcake comes out clean, about 25 minutes.

Let cupcakes cool in pans 5 to 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

MAKE FROSTING In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter, half of powdered sugar, lime juice, and tequila until light and fluffy.

Add remaining powdered sugar and beat until smooth.

Pipe frosting onto cooled cupcakes. Garnish with coarse salt, lime zest, and lime wedges and a cut decorative straw before serving.

Most of the time we don’t fuss with piping tips. We like to put the frosting in a resealable PLASTIC BAG and snip off a lot of the corner so we have a wide opening that’s super easy to maneuver.

Owing to his versatile personality and diversified knowledge in the said field, Ar. Aditya has been invited to many panels and juries at various Design and Architecture schools.

His friends and family, being an undetectable part of his personality, Ar. Aditya derives his strength from his lovely wife, both of his sons; close friends, and family. Ar. Begampure’s father is also a reputed and well-known architect from his hometown and has been in the profession for the past 40+ years making a vast impact in the field of architecture and education.

Why is this word considered taboo? Why the sanitary pads are covered in black packets whenever purchased by women? Why everybody laughs when a man purchases a sanitary pad for his wife/ sister/ girlfriend/ friend? Why can’t we talk about periods openly? What are the myths about menstruation?

Meet Aditi Gupta- Co-Founder of Menstrupedia, Women Entrepreneur, Author, and a Speaker; who spread menstrual awareness in India.

Story of Aditi Gupta

Aditi Gupta is an important person who has started a company that has revolutionized the lives of many females. So, how did she think to start ‘Menstrupedia’?

Aditi is a resident of Garhwa in Jharkhand. Just like any other girl when she started menstruating at the age of 12. When she started, she doesn’t have any idea about it, she straight away ran to her mother and her mother made her bathe in two-and-half mugs of water because of the belief that the flow will last for two-and-half days.

Just like any other girl these days, she is also not allowed to touch pickles, sit on another’s bed, forbidden from worshipping and kitchen, being part of any festivities or social events. She was forced to live in a dark, dump, and unhygienic place and also a force to use dirty rags which became coarse and uncomfortable after repeated wash.

They both started a college project of spreading menstrual awareness among school-going girls in urban and semi-urban areas of Mehsana, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ranchi. As they both predicted, many of them are unaware of the process of menstruation until their first period. They had conversations with parents and students and got to know that this topic is not discussed in the .

Idea of Menstrupedia

After the awareness tours, they were both hit by the idea of a comic book to impart knowledge around menstruation in an interesting way. They started the comic with three girl characters Pinky, Jia, and Meera.

For the first time, she puts up the comic book on a website (www.talesofchange.in) in November 2012.

After some time, they add the character of Dr. Priya didi. Then the story revolves around the four. Dr. didi guides the three girls about the process, myths, and how to manage the cycle.

The duo tests the comic but instead of getting a positive response, the lack of funds. They both finish their graduation and started their jobs. Meanwhile, they also started the comic online and got great feedback. After, working for 2.5 years, they quit their jobs and launch ‘Menstrupedia.com- an illustrated guide’. They also feature Q&A, blogs, tips, and poems about menstruation. When they start developing the website, they provide information about puberty and sexuality for pre-teens and teenagers.

Menstrupedia has done several campaigns in collaboration with Whisper India as ‘Touch the Pickle Movement’ with many actresses like Shraddha Kapoor, Parineeti Chopra, Kalki Koechlin, Neha Dhupia, Mandira Bedi, and others. Her comic has been used by many NGOs like Protsahan, Munshi Jagannath Bhagwan Smriti Sansthan, Instincts, Kanha, along with two Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. They both are planning to reach another 50 million girls across India and planning to launch books on boys and puberty.

Aditi says, “We dream of a future where menstruation is not a taboo, not a curse, but a welcoming change in a girl’s life”.

Aditi is also a successful Ted talk speaker. She made it to the achiever’s list of Forbes India 30 under 30 in 2014. She is an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) alumni. Her work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNBC, and BBC.

Aditi and Tuhin start generating funds for the comic to be printed. Before printing, they got the comics to be reviewed by a gynecologist for accuracy. They face another challenge of expanding a team with the sensible content to be published. But, many people came forward and joined their community, took the responsibility to put an end to this taboo. They both feel that lack of sex education is the major problem that makes menstruation a shame. She wants to include boys in her team, as this will help the issue to be resolved. This topic is very sensitive to present around the world especially in front of the old generation and rural areas.

Chumbak was started in the year 2010, ecommerce site by Vivek Prabhakar and his Shubhra Chadda with an idea to create fun, bright Indian souvenirs with their wacky and funky designs. Their love for travel & collecting souvenirs gave them the idea creates quirky fashion. Their tagline also reflects their idea of the brand- ‘A Little Quirk is All We Need’.

The founders started their journey from Bengaluru.

Shubhra Chadda and Vivek Prabhakar (husband and wife) live luxurious life and they both love to travel and purchase souvenirs from like fridge magnets from different places. One day she realized while staring at her fridge filled with magnets that the traditional replicas and other Indian souvenirs.

She noticed that no one is making souvenirs like designer magnets that could be gifted to others.

That is the moment she got the idea to create quirky and funky designs that makes shopping fun and easy. Shubhra suggested the idea with her husband and they both started working on the idea.

Chumbak started funding by selling their house raised a total amount of Rs. 70-80 crore fund from Narayan Ramachandran, Blacksoil, and Gaja Capitals.

They sold their house worth Rs.45 Lakhs to raise funds for their company and named their company as Chumbak in 2009. To create history, one has to take a risk to went somewhere in his life.

Slowly and gradually they went ahead with their idea and gained profits with strong heads. They started with fridge magnets and soon come up with a variety of product categories. They took an entire year to design and manufacture their other categories of products. They launch 12 products in March 2010. As the years passed, their brand became famous and makes their products as hottest lifestyle products.

In the financial year 2017, Chumbak revenue is increased from Rs. 20.6 crore to Rs. 41 crore.

On the other hand, according to regulatory filings, their losses grew

by Rs. 55 Lakh to Rs. 20 crore.

While opening their first store they didn’t face many challenges because of Bengaluru’s welcoming attitude towards start-ups. But, during the COVID-19 pandemic, just like others Chumbak has also been affected. They have to shut down their outlets across the country.

Their online channel has shown huge promise and shown the importance of changing and adapting to times. In the time of COVID-19, Shubhra appreciates the work-from-home trend and given her the opportunity to emerge out of the losses.

Chumbak has become a successful lifestyle brand with 150 stores in India and 70 in Japan. They have created a strong e-commerce presence. Their various categories of the product include containers, dining & kitchenware, decore & living, bed & furnishings, garden & outdoor, stationery & souvenirs, watches, costume jewellery, bags & wallets, beauty & wellness, fragrances, apparel & accessories, travel & leisure, and gifting.

Shubhra Chadda loves to work on new funky designs. Their lot of designs are inspired from the homeland and those designs are doing successfully well in the international market. She is one of the strongest women who believe in their dreams and themselves as well without thinking twice.

Chumbak is now aiming for Rs. 400 crore targets for their annual revenue within the next few years and to make it India’s young and affluent brand.
