“The greatest and most powerful revolutions often start very quietly, hidden in the shadows. Remember that.” ― Richelle Mead

POLITICS

“FRIENDS, FOES AND HUMANS” As the change in the attitude towards India’s Modi, Indonesia’s Probawo and others shows, the U.S. and the E.U. are quite happy to deal with Asian and African leaders accused of human rights abuses as long as it suits their interests. There was an ongoing debate in United States and in some key European countries on the question of 2002 Gujarat riots and the role of India’s Prime minister Narendra Modi, i.e., on the bloodletting. There are signs that Washington, London and Berlin are already mellowing in their attitude towards Modi. Modi, however, is not the only political personality on the world stage who is leading his country and at the same time being accused of human rights violations. Probawo Subianto, who is also accused of serious human rights violations, is seeking to be the president of world’s third biggest democracy and the most populous Muslim nation, Indonesia. While 80 % of the population is Muslims, there are sizable Christian and Hindu minority in Indonesian archipelago. Indonesia’s National commission on Human rights had recommended in 2006 that Praobawo, a retired general, be prosecuted for the abduction of pro-democracy activists in the late 1990s as Suharto’s authoritarian rule was entering its last days. He has also been accused of presiding over the killings of activists in East Timor when it was under Indonesian occupation and the death of over a thousand civilians and the rape of 168 women in the state-orchestrated riots in May 1998.

Earlier Western official refused to establish official contacts with Prabawo, citing his Human violation record, but now there are indications that U.S. officials are having second thought on Prabawo’s candidature. He for once, will ensure continuity in the country’s foreign policy, including strong security linkages with Washington.

4

NEW POLITICAL REALITIES: Ever since the U.S. State Department revoked the Indian Prime Minister’s visa in 2005 for his alleged role in 2002 communal riots, U.S. Ambassadors to India has declined to meet him. The European Union too citing human rights violations had for long refused a visa to Modi. Now, seeing the straws in the wind, both Washington and Brussels seem to be mellowing toward him. And finally Mr. Modi will be on his first visit to U.S.A as in a role of Indian Prime Minister. And like Modi, Prabawo is being seen as a very business friendly and an efficient administrator by the Indonesians elite and the Western admires. SUITABLE BOGEY: Washington anyway has only been playing up Human rights related issues when it suits its strategic goals. In the recent years, Obama’s administration has backed the military takeover in Egypt and turned a blind eye to the killings and on the large scale arrested the civilians. President Barack Obama was in kingdom of Saudi Arabia in late March. This is his third official visit to a country where the political activities were banned. It again shows the well known love of U.S.A to the gulf countries for its use.

EDUCATION

“STUDENTS ON WARPATH” Inevitably, Students across the world are frustrated with their educational institutions. Tution fees rise at rates much higher than inflation, and scholarships are harder to come by. The finances of higher education lead students across the world to the banks for loans. It is a dangerous business. As the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) Global Employment Report from last year put it, “In developing regions where 90 % of the global youth population lives, stable quality employment is lacking.”The numbers are dire. Almost 13 % of young people (74 million people) cannot find workman increase of three and half million between 2007 and 2013.This raises an important problem: if I am to take loans to go to college, and if there is no guarantee of employment after that, I shall be weighed down by debt and unemployment to boot.

Miserable truths about the economics of education moved students to the streets from Qubec(Canada) to Santiago(Chile) to Sofia(Bulgaria) to Kuala Lumpur(Malaysia) and most recently, in Taipei(Taiwan ) over a trade agreement signed with China. Students in Taiwan feel that the agreement will be detrimental to their job prospects. No surprise that students in Lebanon are also part of this new wave. More recently, the students at the American University Beirut(AUB) have been of a struggle to roll back a 6-8 % increase I their tuition fees. There were protests and grievances everywhere in the university. The young people indicate that they are fighting for their future. This is not an idle struggle which can be shut down due to insufficient progress. According to them there is no end to their struggle until and unless there is enhanced educational system or it will end with modern education as we all know it.

The Kernel of the Occupy movement in the United States was around student debt, which has now climbed above the threshold of $1 trillion. When students has incur high debt rate to go to college, this impact them in different ways. First, it reduces the ability of students from middle class backgrounds to enter college without borrowing money .The very rich typically are able to cover cost without anxiety, & few among the very poor are celebrated for their achievements with scholarships. It is the middle class that sees a wall grow around the aspirations of its children to go to college. Second, college debt suffocates the ability of students to experiment with new ideas. They are eager to find courses that will 14

enhance their ability to find a high –paying job once they graduate. To this end, they spend their time finding wage less internships, whose growth has been astronomic over the past two decades. This means courses that challenge the prevailing social order or introduce students innovate thinking seems less attractive. When colleges are challenged over their high cost, they argue that what they provide is a “high-quality “learning experience. Words such as “excellence “spiral outwards as justifications for unconscionably high prices. As machines have been designed to reduce the skill required by the workers, mass education seems less necessary-could we have a society where a small percentage of the population receives “quality education” and the rest make do with the basic skills? This is the moment that we now inhabit, where across the world students have begun to register their dismay at the way education has become increasingly a commodity and not a social good. The realization comes not only because of the volume of debt but also with the inability of those debtburdened students to find meaningful employment .It is these sides of the coin that provoked the most recent wave of student unrest across the planet. “HYPOCRISY – The Perfect Termite” We talk about all round development, we talk about progress and scope for improvement, we talk about social welfare, we talk about mutual benefits, we talk about endless crap on how we are progressing as a Nation, as Individuals.. But we fail to look into ourselves and see where the actual crap lies.

A guy doesn’t sit next to a girl because there are people ready to pound onto them as if they committed a crime. A marketer has to think twice before marketing condoms because he is under the notion on how would people take it as. To be precise, LOG KYA KAHENGEY. A girl thinks twice before falling in love with a guy who is a year or two younger to him, thinking LOG KYA KAHENGEY. Mothers and fathers restrict their children on talking for hours with FRIENDS, because their mindsets conclude something is fishy. We go for movies with our family, and a few explicit scenes actually make us hang our heads in shame, because there are people, our OWN people who think KE YE KAISI MOVIES DEKHTA HAI. A person gets addicted to alcohol or smoking for various reasons, and people conclude that he/she is a spoilt brat and this is the age to make his/her life and he is getting addicted here. A son fails to tell his dad that he wants to go for a movie with his girl friend, who apparently is his BEST FRIEND, a daughter fails to tell her family that she might get late from a party and a guy will drop ger back home. A son fails to communicate to his mother or father that the girl who just got introduced to them was JUST A FRIEND. A guy and a girl cannot walk together in a park and have fun because they have a million eyes staring at them already. LOG KYA KAHENGE, the ONLY statement that has set many lives on fire. Love, being one of the most priceless feeling to mankind, has become a daily joke. Inter-caste marriages suffer endless torture as people are all set to criticise the couple on endless grounds.

16

A Muslim marrying a Hindu or a Christian marrying a Punjabi or even a South Indian guy marrying a Hawaiian girl, criticism welcomes them with open arms till the very end, in any and every way possible. A guy who is ALMOST well settled in life, tries to make things work out for the girl he loves and its barely been a month that love blossoms. The girl thinks she is spoiling the guy’s life, because she is NOTHING and that would form the basis for awesome blossom criticism because what matters is LOG KYA KAHENGE. The concern behind every single thought is agreeable and respectable to almost any extent, the feeling of responsibility towards loved ones, dear ones is appreciated, BUT TILL WHEN WILL THIS CONTINUE TO ROT LIVES ? TILL WHEN WILL WE INDIVIDUALS CONTINUE TO SUPPRESS OUR FEELINGS just because LOG KYA KAHENGE? We HAVE TO be assertive on what WE WANT, and not WHAT OTHERS WANT. We often get carried away by decisions that are made for us or are influenced for us, but we lack the guts to make our own choices. We lack TRUST in life. We ultimately end up regretting the chances we did not take. Concern for the society HAS TO EXIST and thats undeniable, but not at the cost of suppressing our own thoughts, feelings and actions. Think well, decide well, live well, at your own stake, at your own will. Pay no attention to LOG KYA KAHENGEY, because LOGO KA KAAM HAI KEHNA. You wanna live your life your way, go ahead, see to it that you do but not at the cost of what people think. You as a marketer can do ANYTHING, provided you start thinking beyond what you have been thinking so far. You love a guy or a girl who’s elder/younger to you, have the guts to trust that relationship and give in everything to make it happen, fear 5rishn, fear nothing. Give in all you can, expect nothing back. What YOU own will definitely come to YOU. Break free from the clutches that the society lays down upon you, live your life your way, live every moment, every second, if its friendship, love, professionalism or ANYTHING, have the guts to live it till the last heart beat. Do not fear on LOG KYA KAHENGEY, follow your thoughts and notions, live YOUR life YOUR way.

SOCIAL

“BOLSA FAMILIA – A Step Towards Development” There have been very few ideas, since inception of life on earth that made positive impact on millions of lives. One such idea is Bolsa Familia. This innovative social initiative has transformed lives of millions of people in Brazil. The program mandates direct cash transfers to poor families provided they commit and continue keeping their children at school and take them for regular health check-ups. This program gives twin benefits of addressing poverty through direct cash transfer along with making sure the future generations are safeguarded against the perils of illiteracy and ill-health. It comes as a boon to poor families who were earlier forced to take loans just to meet the unplanned expenditure of medical expenses. It makes sure that children complete their basic education and are better skilled to get a job. In this way, this program breaks the jinx of future generations being continuously pushed into poverty. For those who see the world through statistics, this program reaches 11 million families i.e., more than 46 million people. So this has been described as the largest program of its kind in the world. The beneficiaries form not only the major portion of the country’s low-income population but also are the portion that has never benefited from social programs. This scheme also happens to be the most targeted one, as it reaches 94 percent of the funds and reaches the poor which constitutes 40 percent of the population. Studies prove that most of the money is used to buy food, school supplies, and clothes for the children. It is estimated that a startling 27.7% came out of poverty in alone first five years of full scale implementation of this program. Also this program gives a sense of belonging with the country to the people, thus reducing anti-government instincts of terrorism. Also, this has brought efficiency in the delivery of public services as people take responsibility and demand for better services In order to avail the direct cash transfer benefit. So this program has led to building stronger institutions for health and education in order to cater to a huge population of beneficiaries of this program. This scheme has also proved that privatization is not answer to bring in efficiency in institutions. Governments shirking responsibility in garb of privatization will have lot of lessons to learn from this Innovative scheme, embraced by millions. It has shown that a public deliver mechanism can thrive successfully and also meet the aspirations of millions of beneficiaries. This fact has been commended by none other than the World Bank itself. At a time when people across the world have lesser confidence in their governments to deliver public services, this program has proved that governments can deliver with collective participation of its people. This program has also targeted another social menace of child labour with considerable success. This program does not allow the children to skip more than 15% of the classes, .If a child is caught

19

skipping, the allowance is suspended for the entire family, thus forcing the parents to pull their children out of labour and send them to schools. This pioneering program has spread to all over the world and has become the most successful export. Supporters of this program call this as a cheap and efficient way of improving lives of the poor but its critics say it merely locks the poor into a holding pattern and continue to show inequality. But few shall doubt that this program has ensured economic stability to millions of families. It is also said that this program merely keeps the families above a subsistence level and does not move them up the social ladder. But it needs to be understood that this program is not a magic wand to solve all the ills of the down trodden and the larger economy. The program, based on rights mechanism, along with other meaningful policy mechanisms will be a complete solution to the economy and the ideal way forward.

A lot more goes into finding the right sports shoe than you think! A great place to start is sportsshoes.com, where you can not only find advice on choosing the right running shoe, but also a wealth of informative articles on football boots, tennis shoes and any other sports related footwear. Did you know for example that the way you place your sports shoes can have a

massive impact on performance? Or that permanently leaving the laces of your football boots done up will decrease heel support over time? Alternatively, you can pick up the phone for a chat with an expert or visit their store in Bradford, home to a technical running and fitness centre. The store features free Asics Dart fish running gait analysis, which will analyse your natural running style in super slow motion. Football fans can have a go on the boot testing net which features a speed gun as well. So is all this ‘loving your feet’ going to cost you an arm and a leg? Not at sportsshoes.com, whose price beat promise and regular online sale mean you can get top notch brands like Nike, Adidas, Asics and Saucony at the cheapest, discount prices. Whether you buy online, over the phone or in store, make sure you get the right advice before you buy any of the many indoor and outdoor shoes on offer. Once you’re kitted out with the right sports shoes, you’re ready for your runner’s high! (Or any other sportsrelated rush for that matter). Believe me it’s an absolute enthralling experience when you get that high.

Talking about running, we all love football .Right? Ok for those of you who aren’t football followers I am sure you must be following the FIFA world cup. If you’ve been watching the world cup, you’re probably aware of Ronaldo, the Portuguese superstar with the incredible six-pack. So what do you need to do to get a six-pack like Ronaldo’s? Our world cup workout shows you what you need to do to slim down and get your abs looking more like a washboard than a beer barrel. Of course, someone like Ronaldo has a lot of advantages – he is a full time professional athlete who can spend hours a day working out. In addition, he will have access to a team of dieticians and even chefs who can ensure that he eats the right things. But does that mean you can’t have a great looking body if you have a full time job working in an office or spend hours each day sitting at the wheel of a car? No. It simply means you have to be smart. The first step is your workouts. When it comes to effectiveness, there are workouts and there are workouts – what we mean is that not all workouts are created equal, and if you want great results, you’re going to have to do the right type of workouts. So what type of workouts do you need to get a great six-pack? The key is the effect your workouts have on your metabolism, and that comes down to intensity. So if your idea of a workout is ten minutes dawdling on the treadmill, a few sets of bench press and then a long sauna, it’s time to crank it up. 26

The good news is, our world cup workout won’t take up a lot of time – you’ll work hard, but you’ll be done in less than an hour. That’s because the most effective type of exercise for fat burning and muscle building is high intensity weight training. High intensity weight training involves working hard and fast and taking minimal rest periods. You should focus on exercises that use lots of muscles at once – good exercises to do include:          

Deadlifts Barbell squats Lunges Dumbbell step-ups Dips Pull-ups Renegade rows (with dumbbells or kettle bells) Dumbbell rows One arm snatches Two-arm kettle bell swings

As you might notice, most of these exercises involve body weight, dumbbells, or kettle bells – and not a machine to be seen. These are the most effective ways to work out, and have the added advantage that you can do most of them at home with a minimum of equipment. The second part of getting a great six-pack is diet. Quite simply, you have to strip down to reveal your abs. You need to eat wholesome, natural, unprocessed foods, and stay away from junk foods and other sugary foods, including alcohol – it’s packed with calories. If you work hard and eat right you might not get Ronaldo’s six pack, but you’ll certainly look and feel better. These so called tips were for those who need those six packs. But for those who don’t have time? Well, for those who feel are in short of time and don’t think they could waste their valuable time. I suggest them to please make time. An hour dedicated only for your fitness will pay off the 16-18 hour work or stress you take out on your body. It will definitely help you a lot. All you need to do is, just make time. Rise up early, get into your track suit, buy running shoes (if you don’t have any), play your walkman and just walk and also if you can, run. More or less, if you are looking for a hefty, muscular physique, hit the nearest gym as soon as possible. Take tips from your trainer. Ask him to plan out your fitness regime and also take special care of your routine. These pointers are just the few things that can help you get a cool and fit body. Trust me, people of today’s generation REQUIRE fitness, it’s the only one small requirement that can help get healthy minds and lives. AVAZE SHAIKH SRM UNIVERSITY – (B.E.)

When you are watching entertainment you will realize you are in 80s. Where in you saw films on bonding with horses dogs snakes etc etc. Entertainment is same but just a twist with modern flavour. Entertainment just relies on slap stick comedy lines from actors like jhonny lever and krishna leaving story at docs. With no story line nor any additional twists this one falls flat. For this week this one can be avoided. Starring: Akshay Kumar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Johnny Lever Directed by: Sajid-Farhad Produced by: Ramesh S. “A Doyenne of the Indian Theatre” Remembering Zohra Sehgal

With a career spanning more than eight decades and spreading smiles through miles, Veteran actress and all jovial Zohra Sehgal bid adieu as she breathed her last on Thursday, 10/7/2014. Aged 102 and forever young at heart, Zohra Sehgal was “A miracle woman, a legend beyond explanation”, quotes Mr.Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Born into a Pathan family in Rampur, the turning point in her life came during her teens when she saw the legendary Uday Shankar perform in Dehradun. Having travelled across India, the doors to fame waited for her. Zohra had acted on the stage in different parts of India, including plays performed for jails inmates. According to Khushwant Singh, she once stayed back to witness an execution in the Ferozpur jail after staging a play there. After her husband's suicide, she first moved to Delhi, and then went to London. She took on odd jobs like working in the India Tea Centre when film roles failed to knock her doors. She got her first break in the films and was signed by Arthur Rank and Merchant Ivory productions.

Zohra Sehgal, an enigmatic actress, famous as the most spirited and natkhat daadi of Indian cinema might have breathed her last , but her naughty nonchalance will remain timeless and how! Defying her age and taking up challenging roles while being at the wrong end of her '90s, this outstandingly dashing daadima livened up our screens with her innocent sparkle. Bestowed with several honours including the prestigious Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan Awards. Lighting up our screens with her short cameos or appearances in films, Zohra Sehgal will definitely be missed.
