HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL HOUSE

THE HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL HOUSE - NEW YORK

One sunny autumn day in 1909, near the Columbia University campus in New York City, a man said a cheerful "good morning" to a Chinese student. The student stopped Harry Edmonds with the remark, 11 Do you know that you are the first person who has greeted me in the three weeks I have been in New York?" Struck by the loneliness of foreign students in this huge, impersonal city, Mr. Edmonds and his wife were moved to invite several of them to informal suppers at their home on Sunday evenings.

The Sunday suppers at the Edmonds' were so successful they soon became a tradition. It was from these informal gatherings that the Intercollegiate Cosmopolitan Club emerged in 1910. The club grew in size and idea, necessitating an early move to Earl Hall on the Columbia University campus.

American students also were included in the Club, for this group acknowledged the importance of developing friendships between the foreign students and Americans - - friendships which would enrich the experience of both. It also would help the students from abroad to gain a deeper understanding of the American way of life.

In 1913 a house at 554 West 114th Street was leased as a drop-in center for the Club members. These headquarters were moved to the fourth floor of an office building at 2929 Broadway in 1916.

Among the early supporters of the Intercollegiate Cosmopolitan Club were Cleveland H. Dodge and his sons, Bayard and Cleveland, and Frederick Osborn. In 1919 Mr. Dodge gave the Club some land on Claremont Avenue in the hope that a clubhouse might be built.

As the years were passing, a dream had begun to develop in the minds of Harry and Florence Edmonds. This dream they discussed with the students and with some of their interested friends. They believed a closer understanding might grow between nations if the students, the future leaders of their countries, had the opportunity to live under one roof. In the sharing of everyday experiences, differences would give way to the realization that all nations are composed of human beings with the same needs and feelings, though influenced by different cultural patterns.

At Christmastime in 1920 John D. Rockefeller, Jr., was invited to be guest speaker for a Sunday Supper. The students discussed with him the idea of an International House which would be both a residence and a program center. Mr. Rockefeller became very interested in the project and early in 1921 gave the land on Riverside Drive and three million dollars to build and equip an International House which would accommodate 500 students.

In speaking at a Sunday Supper in November of 1923, Mr. Rockefeller

voic~d the hopes for this House. He said, in part:

I wonder what inscription will be placed over the door of International House. Will the word "peace" be there? ... Surely the idea of peace will be in the inscription, for no one thing is more generally longed for throughout the world today than peace. Peace is created by the existence of certain factors. These factors are:

First; justice even-handed, universal. Justice for the high and the low, the rich and the poor, the wise and the ignorant Where justice reigns, the causes of friction, of animosity, between men are greatly reduced and peace is more likely to prevail.

But something more than justice is needed, if there is to be peace. To justice must be added good will. Good will implies kindness, tolerance, generosity, and many other qualities which temper justice, cold and stern, and make it warm and human Where justice and good will exist, peace is more apt to be found.

Still another quality is essential to peace, and that is brotherhood Brotherhood implies understanding, loyalty, love, unselfishness, tolerance, helpfulness and it also includes justice and good will ....

Therefore over the door of International House I would write these words, so simple, but how pregnant with meaning: THAT BROTHERHOOD MAY PREVAIL

In September 1924 the doors of the New York International House were opened for its first residents, and Harry Edmonds, aided by his gracious wife Florence, Jirected its operation until retiring in 1935. John L. Mott succeeded him from 1935 to 1942, when service in World War II called him away. At that time his wife, Celestine Mott, ably took the leadership until 1945 when Mr. Mott returned. An interim appointment of Maurice Harari as acting director in 1954 when Mr. Mott retired, was followed by the selection in 1955 of Howard A. Cook, who is the present head of the House.

Under Mr. Cook's supervision a complete renovation modernizing and refurnishing the entire House was undertaken from 1955 to 1958 as the result of au other generous gift from Mr. Rockefeller.

Fq)m these early b e ginnings, International Houses and Centers have sprung up around the world through the energies of former residents of the e arly Houses and a new generation of philanthropists who share the ideals of the International House movement. Today there are more than 60 International

Houses and Centers in 16 countries, bearing out the vision which Mr. Rockefeller so ably expressed in 1923:

So as I follow my vision of International House into the far distant future, this is what I see : I see the mission of International House, "That Brotherhood May Prevail," extending each year in ever widening circ les; I see other such houses springing up in the international student communities of the world, and all these centers joining hands with the various endeavors which are aiming to promote brotherhood
