INTERNATIONAL HOUSE

Dear Resident:
This International House Resident Directory serves a number of purposes. It's a handy reference for a large and diverse community, it contains descriptions of endowed scholarship funds provided by supporters of the House to help residents and achieve diversity, and, perhaps most importantly, it is a keepsake of your stay at I. House. We have learned that former residents save their Directory throughout their lives as a way of recalling their residency and prompting memories when contacting old friends. Inevitably, they are brought out at informal gatherings of alumni for lengthy and enjoyable sessions of "whatever happened to ... ?"
This Directory is not a "year book" nor, since it is published each fall, a reflection of a year gone by. Rather it anticipates a year to come and , significantly , your future lives as I. House alumni and world citizens. We hope that you will find it useful throughout your stay to help knit our community together, and that in the coming years as you peruse its pages you will remember with fondness your stay here, and be prompted to contact an old friend or acquaintan~ as well as support the House. Lifelong friendships are at the heart of the I. House experience, and this visual record - a "snap shot" of our community in 1997 - forever preserves a time and a place in your lives.
Midway through the year, an addendum will be published containing photos and information about residents who arrive mid-term. In the back of the Directory , you 'II find printed the pledge which is recited at the Candlelight Sunday Supper at the end of the academic year. This moving ceremony marks in an unforgettable way the passage of residents from this unique community experience into your roles as world citizens. In the years to come, I hope that you will read these words again from time to time as a way of renewing the International House experience in your daily lives.
Sincerely yours,

Donald L. Cuneo President

NAMED AND ENDOWED FUNDS
Each year, Annual Fund contributions are combined with income generated by International House 's Named and Endowed Funds to provide over 10 percent of the House' s annual budget. Over the last 35 years a number of these special funds have been established to create an additional source of income for the programs and financialaid offered at International House.
Funds established to provide financial assistance to residents may be used to award either monthly stipends for residents who hold positions, or direct grants to partially cover resident fees The size and nature of direct grants are based on evaluation of individual need, and result from a review of financial assistance applications by the House's Admissions Committee. This committee also makes recommendations that special "outreach " grants be awarded to attract potential residents from geographical, cultural, or academically under-represented areas .
Funds which support the House' s program activities may be used to finance either ongoing activities or innovative new projects. These program enrichment funds may also be used to support the team of resident/program assistants , house managers and other position holders who assist in the operation of the House, and in organizing programs for residents and non -resident members.
