Dear Resi d ent:

This International House Resident Directory serves a number of purpose s It's a handy reference for a large and diverse community, it contains de scriptions of endowed scholarship funds provided by supporters of the House to help residents and achieve diversity, and , perhaps most importantly, it is a keepsake of your stay at I. House . We have learned that former residents save their Directory throughout their lives as a way of recalling their residency and prompting memories when contacting old friends. Inevitably, they are brought out at informal gatherings of alumni for lengthy and enjoyable sessions of "whatever happened to ?"

This Directory is not a "year book" nor, since it is published each fa ll , a reflection of a year gone by. Rather it anticipates a year to come and , sign ifi c ant ly, your future lives as I. House a l umni and world citizens . We hope that you will find it useful throughout your stay to help knit our community together, and that in the coming years as you peruse its pages you will remember with fondness your sta y here , and be prompted to contact an old friend or acquaintance as well as support the House. Life long friendships are at the heart of the I. House experienc e, and th is visual record - a "snap shot" of our community in 1998-forever preserves a time and a place in your lives .

Midway through the year, an addendum wi ll be pub l ished containin g photos and information about residents who arrive mid-term . In the ba c k of the Directory, you'll find printed the pledge which is recited at the Candlelight Sunday Supper at the end of the academic year. This moving ceremony marks in an unforgettable way the passage of residents from this unique community experience into your roles as world citizens. In the years to come , I hope that you will read these words again from time to time as a way of renewing the International House experience in your daily lives .

Sincerely yours , I

0n a frosty autumn morning early in 1909, Harry Edmonds, secretary of the Upper Manhattan Y.M.C.A., was walking up the steps of the Columbia University library when he passed a Ch inese student coming down. Edmonds said "Good Morning," and continued walking until he noticed out of the corner of is eye that the young man had stopped. "Thank you for speaking to me," he said. "l have been in New York for three weeks and you are the first person who has spoken to me."

Deeply affected by this encounter, Edmonds and his wife Florence invited a group of foreign students to their country home for s imple suppers of sandwiches and coffee. These gatherings continued, and in the winter of 1910-11, the Edmondses held the first series of Sunday Suppers in Ear l Hall at Columbia University.

The tradition of Sunday Supper continued from the opening of International House in 1924 until today. He ld four times during the academic year, the all-house suppers celebrate the spirit of friendship and good wilJ among the 700 residents from nearly 100 countries.

The Mission of International House, New York is to enable selected graduate students and interns from countries around the world to live and learn together in a challenging and supportive residential community in New York City that builds lifelong qualities of leadership, tolerance, respect and friendship among individuals of all nations and backgrounds.

This ind ependent, non-profit organization achieves its mission by daily interaction among its residents and other members through programs , facilities and residential life designed to foster diversity of thought and experience and to prepare its residents as alumni to meet the challenges of an interdependent world.

Ithink I.House is a relaxing, fun and pleasant environment to be. It is educational to interact with the people who live here. Not only I find it valuable to learn about other cultures and • different countries but also I believe that I contribute to this cultural exchange by sharing with the other residents my national culture and my personal values. It is a much cheaper way to travel the world, and a nicer way to study history and geography. It is not difficult to make friends at I.House. Sometimes it is so helpful to have someone to talk to when I feel depressed because the study is hard or just because I am homesick. It is a lot easier for us to understand each other because somehow we are in the same situation.

Augh I was born in the United States, living here helps to remind me that most of my family was not, and that coming here from another culture to live and study is difficult, even in the best of circumstances. It has helped put a lot about my background into perspective. It is hard to imagine not being surrounded by this diversity. Being an I.House resident has enriched my academic and personal experience more than I ever anticipated. Winther it has been a night in the pub or an evening listening to a lecture in Davis Hall there is always something quite unique taking place.

The benefits that I have drawn from my active participation in the I.House community have been both tangible and subtle. I have learned how to interact/work with a diverse group of people, developed a network offriends across the globe, got invaluable feedback on my dissertation and even improved my culinary skills. Through conversations and observations, I have learnt more about different cultures and professions than I could have ever got to know on my own. And all of this has been in the form of real-life encounters, which I believe have made the experience that much more enduring. As I prepare myself to be a professional and a citizen in the global economy of the 21st century, I could probably not find a better living experience than this.

IHouse gives m.e a wonde, ful access to gain confidence about where I'm from and who I am, to understand where the others come from and who they are, to develop a sense of world and basic skills for co-existence.

It was my first time to confirm that people from different cultures agree with most of Confucius' philosophy about love and family. It was my first time to prove my previous hypothesis that I could have so many close friends if I tried to be really open-minded. It was my first time to truly understand why to be a real artist, you were supposed to embrace people but not to isolate yourself.

It is very rewarding to help build the kind of community I want to live in and I.House gives me the opportunity to acquire and improve the skills to do so. The more people I meet here the prouder and more special Ifeel about being a resident. It is quite a special feeling to meet new residents on my floor and days later realize they are giving guest lectures at Columbia University on human rights abuses in Sri Lanka or women's rights in East Africa. Wl,ere else is this possible?

It is a universe within a city, that's what I concluded after trying to place International House and New York City in relation to each other. A universe in and of itself, with its own rules and procedures, its stars (political, opera and other) and planets, and events and developments of its own. Since hack in my childhood I always wanted- as plenty of other kids worldwide-to become an astronaut or discoverer. Living in the universe of the I.House looks like your dreams final1y came true.

hen I decided to come to the United States to study at Columbia University, I had little idea of what to expect of life in New York. I was told about International House and the international community here. 1came from India, not knowing anyone in New York; I.House was a place I felt comfortable about. I was still apprehensive but 1 was looking Jorward to staying at I.House. Within a Jew weeks, I found I.House to be even more than I expected. It was a relief to find a place that I could feel at home. In less than half a year, I feel I.House has given me many gifts. With such a rich environment and interactive atmosphere, I have thrived here. I always try to learn from every experience, and I.House has provided such rich and varied opportunities for me. I came to a foreign country not only to grow academically, but also as an individual. What makes I.House so special to me is the culture here encourages openmindedness and intellectual curiosity. I cannot tl1ink of any other environment that would allow me to grow and learn so fully.

NAMED AND ENDOWED FUNDS

Each year, Annual Fund con tributi ons are com bin ed with income generated by Int ernational House's Named and Endowed Funds to provide over 10 percent of the House's annual budget. Over the last 35 years a numb er o f these special funds have been established to c reate an addit ional source of income for the programs an d financial-aid offe red at Internat iona l I louse.

Funds established to provide financial assistance to residents may be used to award either monthly stipends for residents who h old positions, or direct grants to partially cover resident fees. The size and nature of direct grants arc based on evaluation of individual need, and result from a review of financial assistance applications by th e House's Admissio n s Committee. This committee also m akes recommendations that special "out reach" grants be awarded to attract potential residents from geographical, c ultu ral, or academically under-represented areas.

Funds wh ich support the I louse's program activities may be used to finance either ongoing activities or innovative new projects. fhese program enrichment funds may also be used to support the t eam of resident/program ass istan ts, hou se managers and othe r position holders who assist in the operation of the House, and in organizing programs for resident and non-resident members.

For their role as a source of financia l continui ty which allows us to address c h anging needs while retaining diverse representat ion within the International House comm un it}, we arc pleased to recognize the following:

The Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Endowment Fund was established in 1984 by His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia to provide program assistant stipends to graduate students at the discretion of International House, depending on needs each year.

The Vivian Bea umont All e n Fund was established in 1963 in memory of noted philanthropist Vivian Beaumont Allen, heiress to the fortune of J. E. Beaumont, founder of the Mays department stores. I he Vivian Beaumont Allen Fund is used for scholarships and stipends at the discretion of International House, depend i ng on particular needs each year.

The Altajir Scho lars h ip Fund was established in 1995 b} Ambassador Mehdi Altajir to pro\'ide scholarship assistance to graduate residents at International I louse.

T he Arab Cultural Fund was established in 1986 b} the Suliman S. Olayan Foundation to provide support for Arab Cultural Programs at
