Reading today's newspaper headlines is no pleasure. There is hardly a continent in this world that is not the scene of war, large or small, Algeria rebels against France, Cypriots are fighting the British, and the Arab states are at war with Israel. From the Far East where the two Chinese states wage a perpetual war,to South America, where the political situation changes almost daily, people are being killed senselessly because of their different political convictions, And there are times in which the Cold War between East and West becomes warm to the point of explosion. People speak about the desirability of peaceful co-existence, but this has become a hackneyed phrase in the mouths of political demagogues who use it to conceal their true motivations. No wonder that many people are gravely concerned about the future of this planet.
And yet, peaceful co-existence is possible and there is a place where one can see it in action, This place is International House. Here an Israeli student can eat his breakfast with an Arab anda German can do his homework with a Frenchman, Here Greeks and Turks meet each other at dances and other social gatherings and friction between Indians and Pakistanis is reduced to competition at bridge tables and chessboards., This is one of the few places where those on the left can discuss politics with those on the right and remain on friendly terms.
These facts stress the importance and value of International House more than mere talk. We who have lived here know these facts and it is our duty to spread the ideal of International House when we return to our n.<ive cities and countries. Let us not forget this duty!

Dear House Member:
Ollie Hines wrote me about the 1957-58 Directory of Members, saying: ''The students to be listed in the directory will soon become alumni and members of your organization. It appears fitting, then, that our directory should contain a message from you.....
My first reaction was to tell you all about it: the worldwide agglomeration of Chapters, members-at-large, what it does and what it will do. On second thought, why add to your reading burdens? The mystic sign across from the Bazaar which says CENTRAL OFFICE on A.
is the headquarters of the International House Association.
Among other things we have, geographically distributed, a complete file of former members of the New York, Chicago, and Berkeley I-Houses. We invite you to share with us this fascinating roster of personalities. We print a Newsletter quarterly for House members and alumni which includes a complete list of contact persons in key parts of the world, Furthermore, we have a truly international collection of magazines received on an exchange basis.
We hope we may have the pleasure of a visit from you and assure you that you will always receive a warm welcome.
a PN yours,
Kathleen Channing Acting DirectorMOnument 6-7600

NEW YORK CHAPTER
INTERNATIONAL HOUSE ASSOCIATION, INC.
500 Riverside Drive, New York 27, N.Y.
International House has sometimes been called the little United Nations of Morningside Heights. Indeed, few institutions could match its cosmopolitan character.
Year after year it has brought together under one roof students of many lands giving them a unique opportunity to broaden their understanding of one another and of the culture and life in other countries remote to them. As a residence and program center International House has enabled you to rise above your own limited world, to widen your horizons and to give substance to its own credo "that brotherhood may prevail.'' To awaken in us this spirit of brotherhood, extending across the barriers of race and religion, is the main purpose of International House; to keep it awake and to cultivate it further is the purpose of the International House Association, of which the New York Chapter is a major part.
Soon most of you will return to your homelands; you will find other local chapters there and we urge you to join them. To those who will stay in the New York area we extend our invitation to join us in our efforts'to spread the principles of International House. Ours is an organization dedicated to helping the New York International House and strengthening the bonds of friendship among students and alumni through its many-sided activities.
Come and give us ''new blood'"'- and new ideas and angles.
Awl Feiffonons
Karel Timperman President of the N. Y. Chapter.
Each year the-colorful Halloween Festival gives students an opportunity to present shows depicting life in their native countries. After one of its performances the Mexican Group posed for this picture. Standing in rear of them are, left to right, Rex Olsson, I. House Trustee David Rockefeller, I. House President Howard Cook, Alan McLaine, and George Birnbaum. Rex, Alan, and George were Student Council Presidents for the terms 1956-57, 1955-56, and 1957-58. A special visitor during the Festival was Movie Star Shelley Winters, shown below with Taeko Ikeda of Japan.
