FOREWORD
To all of you who have lived through the ordeal of the rehabilitation program this past year, my warm thanks for your patience and understanding. The spirit which you have engendered in this International House this year has been wonderful and all of us on the staff who shared the turmoil with you will regret having to say '"''til we meet again."
As this chapter in your life closes and a new and exciting one begins, you-will have many opportunities to pass on to others some of the insights and understandings which you have discovered at International House. There is a wise Chinese saying which goes: 'It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.'' I hope that you will feel compelled to light many candles in the years ahead.

It is no coincidence that the symbol of Light being handed from one to another appears in the motif of International House.
Light has ever been an object of attainment in all civilizations. It was then, as it is now, a symbol of Truth and Knowledge.
When we came to this House, we sought that material Light which would remove our academic darkness. Membership of this House has not only assisted us in this purpose, but has provided us with an intellectual illumination which has helped to dispel the darkness of our mental and moral ignorance and brought to our view the sublime truth of the "brotherhood of man",
Having lived and worked together, we have received from each other those human gifts of true fellowship and understanding, and a conviction that this world of ours could be, if we choose, a place undivided by senseless distinction of race, color or theory.
When we end this phase of our life together at this House and return to our respective homelands, our task begins: to share these things with others everywhere.
