Springing into Summer

Sandi J.

Davies

After a most successful Q1 with record enrollment in our IFPO educational programs and Corporate and Individual Memberships, we look forward to Q2. This milestone could not have been possible without the many awesome volunteer leaders who continue to support our organization.

Summer doesn’t generally include professional development. Many are focused on enjoying the beach, the mountains, picnics, and family, not to mention many other wonderful pastimes. Having said this, though, it is also a great time to consider expanding your knowledge and gaining an IFPO Global Certification. Perhaps start considering kicking this plan off in September, when many return to school. There is a strong possibility that you could have a worldwide industryrecognized certification coming into 2025. Push yourself…. you will reap the rewards. I promise!

For those who will be attending ASIS International GSX in Orlando (September 20th— 25th), please visit us at the IFPO Booth (1092). A number of our Global Regional Representatives, along with other members of the IFPO Team, can generally be found there. We would very much like to meet you.

As you know, this is an amazing event, and you should make every effort to attend if you can. Even if you can’t attend the workshops and seminars, the exhibitor floor is an amazing experience you will gain immensely. The networking possibilities are vast and worthwhile.

We have even more exciting news coming out of the IFPO Headquarters. Coming soon is a new, very prestigious professional certification. The Master Security Instructor will be unveiled in early August. This will be the highest level of certification that the IFPO Offers. This designation will be awarded upon successfully completing a comprehensive application process followed by a peer review committee.

Not only will the MSI be for instructors delivering the IFPO Programs, but also for programs that may be offered within their organization outside of our offerings. Many individuals who have been instructing/training for years have not had access to a certification dedicated to their skill set. These industry professionals will soon have an opportunity to be recognized for their dedication and effort to deliver educational opportunities to others effectively. Stay tuned for further information.Hope to see you in Orlando – ASIS International GSX. sandidavies@ifpo.org

The Professional Security Officer

Today’s security industry requires a motivated, customer-service-oriented individual with excellent verbal and written communication skills and exceptionally high degrees of honesty, integrity, leadership, and, above all, common sense. Others recognize the person who demonstrates these qualities as a professional. He/she exudes the confidence and skill to make it possible for the rest of the community to have faith in his/her ability to act in their interest. The security officer who meets these standards is a professional in the fullest meaning of the word and is respected as such.

The term “Professional Individual” generally means attorneys, physicians, or perhaps teachers and accountants, but it also includes security professionals. A professional person is characterized by:

By virtue of having completed certain educational programs and having passed area- of-expertise examinations, professional individuals are recognized as possessing distinctive kinds of knowledge and skills. Several times in our careers, we have hired security officers for positions. We have interviewed students in criminal justice programs and those on the Dean’s List at local universities.

Many times, the individuals in these academic programs were not hired –for various reasons. Professional security officers must have situational awareness, and emotional intelligence, be courteous, be an excellent communicator, have the ability to remain calm in stressful situations as well as the ability to enforce company standards in a friendly, yet firm demeanor.

It is important that a security officer’s friendliness not be mistaken for weakness. Education is an important aspect of professional development in the security industry. Security certifications will enhance career opportunities and earning potential for security professionals.

NFPA 730: Guide for Premises Security

Many people are unaware of the crucial aspect of premises security, especially the NFPA 730 guide for Premises Security. In this article, I will explain why you need this guide and how it can help you protect your organization.

The Security Plan

Your Security Plan should document the protection of the organization. The property owner is responsible for conducting a Security Vulnerability Assessment (SVA). NFPA stands for National Fire Prevention Association, which provides essential guidelines for this process.

The security plan starts with assessing your property to identify actual and potential threats. Then, you will need a set of Post Orders that describe the duties of all your officers so they can address and cover reasonably foreseeable events.

For example, what are the chances of a fifth accident if you have had four slip-and-fall incidents in your parking lot? And what are the chances of an employee contacting attorneys and filing a lawsuit? In such a case, you might receive a set of interrogatories requesting copies of all security reports from the last five years, as well as your Security Plan and any assessments conducted. If you reply that no assessment and no security plan exist, you will be at a significant disadvantage.

Prior and similar acts are foreseeable; you only need to review your incident reports to identify patterns of crimes and incidents.

Perimeter Security and NFPA 730

Did you know that a complete copy of NFPA 730 costs only about 30 dollars? Do you have your copy? Do you have a set of Post Orders, Policies and Procedures, and an Emergency Action Plan? Now, let's look at your perimeter.

The parking area should also have a security plan according to NFPA 730. Exterior security devices and systems should include, but not be limited to:

2020 Edition of NFPA 730

Landscaping primarily serves an aesthetic purpose but can also create security problems. Shrubbery can provide concealment for criminals if allowed to become overgrown, and trees can serve as a means of scaling fences or accessing rooftops if planted too close to the fence line or buildings.

There are several guides for trimming shrubbery and trees. For example, shrubbery should be kept to a maximum height of 3 feet (0.91 m), and trees should be trimmed so that the bottom branches are a minimum of 7 feet (2.13 m) above the ground.

This will provide a clear zone of approximately 4 feet (1.21 m) between the shrubbery's top and the trees' bottom branches for surveillance.

Landscaping can also be used as a deterrent to intrusion. Examples include:

1. Shrubbery with briars or thorns.

2. Thick plantings that are difficult to penetrate.

Clear visibility into the store can deter robbery because it will enable passersby and police patrols to observe activities inside. It will also allow employees to observe suspicious activities outside the store.

The Expanding Role of Security Practitioners in AI and Cybersecurity

As AI continues to permeate every industry, the security sector is at a pivotal moment where technological innovation presents a significant opportunity for security leaders worldwide. As AI enhances the capabilities of cameras and security infrastructure, practitioners are expanding their focus beyond advanced security to include business intelligence.

Now is the time to harness the potential of security to contribute to business intelligence and value creation, including making strategic investments that utilize cameras as sensors. Their mission is to help the industry capitalize on AI advancements to enhance the security of people, places, and assets. Through product development, validation, and ecosystem enablement, AI will evolve rapidly. While some may prefer to watch from the sidelines, this is a crucial shift that practitioners must actively engage with.

Security has always been integral to computer vision developments, utilizing analytics for various physical security applications such as intrusion and threat detection, access detection, access control, identity verification, and perimeter protection. Leveraging AI will enable enhanced threat detection, predictive capabilities, increased automation, advanced behavioral analysis, integration with IoT devices, risk management, compliance, and adaptive security measures.

AI is also propelling the security industry into a new realm of business intelligence, surpassing previous capabilities significantly. With an estimated one billion cameras globally, there is unprecedented potential to expand the role and importance of security practitioners. Now is the time to create outcomes and use cases that leverage security’s ability to contribute to business intelligence and value discussions.

While AI can enhance the role of security practitioners, it is also a tool that adversaries can exploit. The widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has created an interconnected ecosystem of physical and cybersecurity systems that utilize AI, blurring boundaries and intertwining physical security and cybersecurity.

This convergence impacts operational technology (OT) systems, including physical access control and security systems, thereby involving physical security teams. Understanding the role these teams can play in improving physical security and access control environments will become crucial as customer demands increase in response to rising threats.

Intel’s mission is to enable the industry with the latest knowledge, education, and technological tools to continue to protect organizations and people through the technological innovations of today and tomorrow, and this is why they are a proud sponsor of the Outstanding Security Performance Awards (OSPA’s) at GSX in September 2024.

Understanding Malware: A Comprehensive Guide to Protection

In today's digital age, the malware threat looms larger than ever. Malware, short for malicious software, encompasses various digital threats designed to infiltrate, disrupt, or damage computer systems and networks. From viruses and worms to ransomware and spyware, these malicious programs pose a significant risk to individuals and organizations alike. Understanding what malware is and how to protect against it is crucial for safeguarding sensitive data and maintaining the integrity of digital infrastructure.

What is Malware?

Malware is any software intentionally designed to cause harm to a computer, server, or network. This umbrella term encompasses various types of malicious programs, each with its own objectives and attack methods. Some common types of malware include:

Viruses: These programs replicate themselves by attaching to other files or programs. Once activated, viruses can execute harmful actions, such as deleting files or stealing sensitive information.

Worms: Unlike viruses, worms can spread independently without requiring user interaction. They exploit vulnerabilities in network protocols to infect multiple systems rapidly.

Ransomware: This type of malware encrypts files or locks users out of their systems, demanding a ransom payment in exchange for restoring access. Ransomware attacks have become increasingly prevalent in recent years, targeting individuals, businesses, and even government agencies.

Spyware: As the name suggests, spyware is designed to monitor and collect information about a user's activities covertly. This can include keystrokes, browsing history, and personal data, which may be used for malicious purposes such as identity theft or espionage.

Trojans: Trojans disguise themselves as legitimate software to trick users into installing them. Once activated, they can perform

various malicious actions, such as stealing passwords or creating backdoors for attackers.

Protecting Against Malware

Given the pervasive nature of malware, it's essential to implement robust cybersecurity measures to mitigate the risk of infection. Here are some proactive steps individuals and organizations can take to protect against malware:

1. Install Antivirus Software: Antivirus software is a fundamental component of any cybersecurity strategy. It helps detect and remove malicious programs before they can cause harm. Ensure your antivirus software is regularly updated to defend against the latest threats.

2. Keep Software Up to Date: Software vulnerabilities provide an entry point for malware to exploit. Stay vigilant about installing updates and patches for operating systems, applications, and firmware to address known security flaws.

3. Exercise Caution Online: Be wary of suspicious emails, links, and attachments, as these may be vectors for malware distribution. Avoid clicking on unfamiliar links or downloading files from untrusted sources.

4. Enable Firewalls: Firewalls act as a barrier between your device and the internet, monitoring incoming and outgoing traffic to block malicious activity. Configure firewalls on both individual devices and network gateways for added protection.

5. Implement Security Best Practices: Practice good cybersecurity hygiene by using strong, unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication (2FA), and regularly backing up important data. These measures can help mitigate the impact of a malware infection and facilitate recovery efforts.

6. Educate Users: Raise awareness among employees, family members, and colleagues about the dangers of malware and how to recognize potential threats. Provide training on cybersecurity best practices and encourage a culture of vigilance and accountability.

7. Monitor and Respond: Implement robust monitoring tools and incident response procedures to detect and respond to malware incidents promptly. Early detection and containment can help minimize the damage caused by malware infections.

A New Cybersecurity Logistic:

The implementation of Nimbus-Key ID could have significantly prevented the entry of ransomware attackers into Stanford University's network. Nimbus-Key ID employs Dynamic Multi-Factor Authentication (DE-MFA®), a dynamically encrypted multi-factor authentication method. It ensures true user verification for employees, administrators, and students through KYC (Know Your Customer), AI (Artificial Intelligence), and biometric verification. This advanced authentication process issues dynamic login keys, enhancing security by constantly changing authentication factors. Nimbus-Key ID focuses on securing the front entry into systems, complementing traditional

cybersecurity systems that monitor enterprise systems. By deploying advanced true user verification techniques, such as biometric authentication and dynamic encryption, Nimbus-Key ID strengthens authentication processes, making it challenging for unauthorized individuals to gain access to sensitive networks and data.

Security Project Management. Decalogue of Errors.

President. Latin Advisory Council. IFPO.

Effective security project management is a critical aspect of asset protection and preventing incidents that can compromise an organization's integrity. Project managers specializing in security must be meticulous in their approach and constantly vigilant of variables that can affect their project's outcome. The following details the ten most common errors in security project management and how they can negatively impact results.

First. An unclear definition of the project scope. Without a precise understanding of what needs to be achieved, it is easy to deviate from the main objective, which can result in wasted resources and the delivery of a project that does not meet the required security needs.

Second. Failing to conduct a thorough risk assessment. Security is a field where unidentified risks can have serious consequences. A superficial risk assessment may leave undetected vulnerabilities that could be exploited by threats later on.

Third. Lacking an adequately trained project team. Security is a technical area that requires specialized knowledge. A team without the necessary skills will not be able to implement security solutions effectively.

Fourth. Not maintaining adequate documentation throughout the project. Documentation is essential for traceability of decisions, changes, and progress. Without it, it's difficult to maintain continuity and accountability within the project team.

Fifth. Absence of clear success metrics. Without well-defined performance indicators, it's difficult to measure the project's success and to know if safety objectives are effectively being met.

Sixth. Not having an effective communication plan. Communication is vital in project management, especially in the realm of security, where information must flow timely and accurately to avoid misunderstandings that could lead to security breaches.

Seventh. Ineffective change management. Security projects may require adaptations due to changes in threat landscapes or regulatory requirements. Resistance to change can render the project obsolete before its completion.

Eighth. Lack of a contingency plan. Unexpected events occur, and without a contingency plan, a project can quickly derail at the first sign of problems, risking the organization's security.

Ninth. Not involving all stakeholders in the decision-making process. Security affects the entire organization, and decisions made without input from all stakeholders can result in solutions that are not acceptable or effective for everyone.

Tenth. Not conducting regular reviews and updates. The security environment is dynamic, and what was adequate at the start of the project may not be at the end. Regular reviews ensure that the project remains relevant and effective.

To overcome these errors, project managers must adopt a proactive and strategic approach. This includes establishing a rigorous planning process, conducting detailed risk assessments, investing in team training, maintaining comprehensive documentation, defining clear success metrics, establishing effective communication channels, managing change flexibly, preparing solid contingency plans, involving all stakeholders, and conducting regular project reviews.

By focusing on these key areas, project managers can minimize risks and maximize effectiveness. Managing security projects is a challenging task, but with proper attention to detail and a focus on preventing common errors, it is possible to achieve results that not only meet objectives but also strengthen the organization's overall security posture.

Ultimately, success in security project management relies on the ability to anticipate issues, adapt to new situations, and learn from each experience to continuously improve processes and outcomes.

As leaders, we have a responsibility to ourselves and our teams to remain self-reflective and self-aware, always looking for ways to improve as leaders and grow as individuals.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the more common factors that if left unchecked can derail a promising career as a loss prevention leader. Do any of these apply to you?

Resisting Change. In so many aspects of today’s retail workplace, change truly is the only constant. That means your ability to understand what’s happening around you and embracing new and creative ways of doing things is a must to advance your career. Be strong enough to bend as the waves of change come your way.

Not Understanding How What We Do Contributes to Organizational Objectives.

In our career field, we are retail professionals who happen to specialize in loss prevention. It is critically important to understand how what we do fits into the larger goals of the business and the culture of the company we work for.

Understanding how what we do matters in the broader scheme of things should directly influence the objectives, priorities, and outcomes of the loss prevention program.

Avoidance. How we respond to conflict is a hallmark of leadership. Leaders must be willing to take risks and put their perspective on the line. This isn’t simply about avoiding difficult discussions. At its core, conflict avoidance is often used to mask insecurities and avoid having our vulnerabilities, uncertainties, or mistakes exposed.

Taking Credit for Other People’s Work— or Shifting Blame.

These individuals exaggerate their contributions and successes while shifting blame to others when things don’t go as expected. When we over- inflate our efforts or expect others to “fall on the sword” to protect our interests, it can lead to animosity and feelings of disloyalty. This self-serving behavior undermines the value of the team and will eventually come back to haunt those involved.

Ethical Violations. Honesty and integrity are the most desired and admired characteristics of leaders of all types, but especially in a career field like lost prevention. Even a career full of good behavior and positive work can be ruined by a single ethical violation. Always be cautious in your decisionmaking, keeping in step with the morals and values that brought you to where you are today.

Micro-Management. The tendency to seek ways to control our environment, speak up about problems, and challenge the system can be extremely positive. However, this can also lead to a perception of being rigid and overly controlling. You might be trying to avoid failure, but this can impede creativity and lead to those around you feeling undervalued and not trusted. Unfortunately, this can also greatly obstruct team dynamics and eventually lead to disengagement.

Not Working Well With Others. While it may sound like an obvious pitfall, there are those that can be blind to just how difficult they are to work with. The ability to create strong relationships and build a team that enjoys working together is essential. No one succeeds on their own.

Many careers are derailed because we either don’t know how to build effective and positive relationships, or don’t prioritize this asset in the workplace.

Not Learning From Our Mistakes.

While some mistakes are bigger and more impactful than others, everyone makes mistakes. Yet, while most of our mistakes may not be career-defining in and of themselves, the key to leadership success is not to make the same mistakes over and over again. It is generally believed that we learn much more from failure than from success, but it is still critical to learn to overcome mistakes, grow as an individual and as a professional, and avoid repeating mistakes as we move forward.

Arrogance. There is a stark difference between confidence and arrogance. Leaders who behave in ways that are seen as egocentric and superior tend to shut down conversation, creativity, and innovation and can ruin team dynamics. Those that display the constant need to be right, the expert, and the one with all the answers will typically lack selfawareness and undermine the essence of what it means to be a leader. When in a position of authority, stay humble and connected to your team.

Burnout. One of the more common factors that can derail a career, burnout can impact every aspect of your life. Victims of burnout often have a Type A personality. There may be a tendency to be a workaholic, have an inability to set boundaries, and perhaps put themselves last when it comes to their health and well-being. Be intentional about your work/life balance and take the necessary steps to recharge your batteries and avoid the setbacks of overwork.

Do any of these apply to you or someone you know? Loss prevention is a career field that requires flexibility and an open mind. But as the business of retail continues to grow and evolve, many of the fundamental qualities of successful leadership will remain constant. Sometimes when we look in the mirror, we can see more than a reflection—we can see a window into ways that we can grow and develop.

Don’t let any of these factors have a negative impact on your career. With all that you put into what you do, you deserve a career you love and for all your hard work to pay off. Stay positive and focused, but also spend at least a little time reflecting on the things that can throw you off track—so that they don’t.
