Everyday is a ticking time bomb with a constant weight of expectations Are we ever capable of...
Deadlines Readings Activities Review Too many things to do accompanied with the highest expectations. Say “Hello” to College! The chapter in our lives where productivity matters over anything.
Being productive is not achieved if only 1 out of 15 pending tasks is done in the next three days It is done by having the most finished tasks in a day - finish 5, 6, or 7 activities and only then you are productive.
Having so many things needing to be accomplished in a short period of time makes productivity become an obsession. An obsession to move forward. Obsession to finish. Obsession to rest. This obsession that students feel can make them forget about one
Creativity. Creativity does not only come with doing art, creativity can be seen in ideas, problem solving, essays, and even in every written piece
Quantity over Quality
Education is not the only responsibility that a college student has There is also responsibility as a son or as a daughter, as a sibling, and as a grandchild The overwhelming amount of responsibilities can force a person to choose quantity over quality. Studies show that about 48.8% of college students don't have enough time to finish and do all of their course work It can make them think that it may be better to finish as many tasks as possible rather than choosing to finish them with effort and 100% quality.
Quality over Quantity
Latin Honors. A very prestigious award that one could have. High grades is its ultimate factor; the key to achieve it is through quality work Quality work takes time and effort It is not easily accomplished unless you give your all Quality work contains creativity and determination As well as with the help of productivity, an activity could be finished with 100% quality.
Productivity is a good thing but with being productive it is better to consider the quality of the work done. Having so many tasks done is a great thing, but finishing a task with full effort, and confidence is better
Being productive could also be the source of creative juices.
And if asked, does productivity kill creativity? No, because there is a choice to be productive while being creative.
Often we have heard of the story of the obsessed artist. The one who started from humble beginnings and rose into glory and fame A story which follows their happier and simpler days, down to their chaotic and pressuring decline. A film recently released entitled “The Menu” depicts exactly this trope of character What drove the main character to the point in which he is insane enough to lead his esteemed guests and his fellow chefs into their horrible fate? The story hints that he was once a simple yet passionate chef who enjoyed serving food, but now he is a stoic and intimidating figure who only seeks the utmost appeal from his creations He is a world renowned chef who serves only the highest class of people in his own island. Disregarding how he viewed the people he resented, reaching a class of his own as a chef was a path of constant people-pleasing, innovating, meeting and exceeding standards, and maintaining the appeal of his art. The pressure and pretentiousness in the industry has led him to his ultimate downfall A person doesn’t need to be a chef to see how one’s obsession with just constantly producing something that pleases fickle standards may kill its essence or soul.
A student’s life could be riddled with the same sentiments, albeit in different ways. A student is expected to meet certain requirements during a certain time period, most of them know that A student can also exceed said requirements, and be recognized and glorified. It sounds simple enough yet the process of getting there is tedious and exhausting Productivity and creativity are different between the purviews of being a student and a chef but the experiences you get are comparable. A restaurant environment has the pressure of keeping up with orders; a school deals in various requirements Both have standards The rush of keeping up with a checklist leads to negligence of quality The same quality that is created through standard and creativity. One can be productive under certain standards yet lose their creativity at the same time At that point they would be a cookie-cutter generic manufacturing machine. The tedious and repetitive process of just producing saps away a person’s passion for doing it. The fear of going substandard makes them stay in the line to produce Creativity is risk; innovation through creativity means you risk the fall to take a chance at soaring through the skies. Fear of failing grades and fear of losing your food’s reputation makes you stay in your comfort zone to keep on producing the same thing over and over. That is why another factor is introduced, which is competence. Productivity will only murder your creativity if you let it If you are competent enough to secure a standard and exceed it with your creativity, then that is a step towards the perfection that you long for. A lot of people in this world are competent though, exceedingly competent even But competence is something you can work for. Some people falter in the midst of the overwhelming pressure of competition But even if the geniuses and the talented come out on top, there is a price they paid which is difficult to replace Take for example the esteemed chef who was aforementioned, he is productive and creative because he is brilliant. He is perfect if not close to perfection. So if he is that good, we go back to the question, what drove him to utter insanity? It is the loss of his passion The field in which he obsessively strived for excellence has bled his passion dry. All of it to merely please people who did not understand the intricacies of his art form He cooks for them not from his heart, but from his obsession to be better. A student who’s not passionate about learning can still learn and excel in class, but the sacrifices and the scars that they bear from it will eventually take their toll if they are not strong enough Productivity and creativity work in harmony to form passionate excellence, not obsessive perfection.
Does productivity really kill your creativity? Oh wait. Let me add something. Does "obsession" for productivity kill your creativity? Everyone knows that too much is dangerous. Too much coffee can make you palpitate. Too much chocolate can result in diabetes And too much working can lead to stress and burnout Obsession is a word that has a connection to the word "too much". Being obsessed with something is not healthy. And I bet that the questions that I asked gave you the idea of what will be its answer So let me explain it to you clearly.
Being productive is good. A day can be used to complete as many tasks and activities as possible, and finishing on time gives you a highly satisfying feeling However, being obsessed with productivity is somehow associated with being a workaholic. Working nonstop merely to complete a task, working all day just to receive praise from others, and working just to meet a deadline are all toxic traits. Consider being an editorial cartoonist for a publishing house. The primary editor assigned you three pieces of art to complete within a week since he is aware of how time-consuming and creatively demanding developing an artwork can be. But due to your obsession with productivity, you completed all of that in a single day to have another set of work to be done Yes, it is good that you finished your task earlier than the deadline, but do you think your client will be satisfied with your work? Do you think your work is sufficient? Do you believe that being a productivity freak might compromise your performance? In order to be creative, you must explore topics that interest you, turn your ideas into works of art, and make them come to life Do you believe that in less than a day, you could have produced three pieces of art? No, I'll bet. It takes time to be creative because you need to collect your ideas Even painters and authors took more than a month or a year to complete their work, not just a day. Don't settle for "that's enough" just to pass your work and accomplish more Learn how to work at your own pace And never let obsession with productivity affect your work.
I must say that being creative is hard to achieve when you are obsessed with productivity. Being productive and creative are the traits that are somehow hard to have at the same time especially when there is the word obsession associated with them. However, if you know how to balance things, everything will fall into place perfectly. A coin has a tail and a head. We have arms left and right. Everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Being productive is not bad thus, being obsessed with productivity is. And being obsessed with something can destroy your other traits and talents, or worse, can kill them Learn to do things in moderation and don't let obsession knock on your doors.
"Our culture idolizes creativity but worships productivity These two contradictory ideologies are now colliding And we’re caught in the middle "-Stowe Boyd
We gear ourselves with a time schedule, an app that can track our to-do lists, grasping at anything that will help us work faster, push harder, and produce more In fact, hustling is celebrated on social media, especially among millennials. It is linked to productivity and is considered an important ingredient in the formula of success.
Technology has made it feasible for us to automate, communicate, track, and measure in ways that were previously unimaginable The logical conclusion is that technology has greatly increased our productivity, both as individuals and as a nation. However, it's reasonable to say that the allure of new technology is now a little more grounded in reality, and consumers are starting to recognize a blind spot: there are situations in which technology can actually be a burden or crutch rather than a solution. This is especially true when it comes to creative thinking, a spontaneous skill that has long been commended for making unexpected appearances in the minds of our greatest thinkers
Many now use hustle culture as the benchmark when assessing performance and productivity However, the truth is that hustle culture isn't quite what it's cracked up to be. It poses a risk to individuals as well as the overall safety of the workplace
According to a study by Deloitte, 77% of people have experienced burnout at their job and 42% have left their jobs because they felt burned out This is the result of mental and emotional stress due to working long hours and trying to keep up with unrealistic expectations set by the toxic excesses of hustle culture
Productivity alone isn't the issue Things really get interesting when you add creativity into the mix As we’ve shifted from a manufacturing-based economy to a knowledge work economy, we’ve brought with us a ton of our own baggage behaviors that were supposed to help us but that instead hinder our creativity As stated by Rafah Harfoush (2019), we treat our work as an extreme sport, where our struggles and sacrifices in the name of our job are glorified No wonder we feel guilty when we turn off our phones In other words, we have a society where individuals are under extreme pressure to apply the tenets of productivity (inherited from the industrial revolution) in jobs which demand creativity. As we force creativity and productivity together, we can see the incompatibilities that so many of us experience on a daily basis at work
For one thing, productivity is based on a model of continuous output, a need to account for every minute of the day, to prove that we are indeed contributing. Creativity, on the other hand, is a messy and disjointed process that often requires large chunks of unstructured time One cannot corral our creativity through sheer willpower and endurance, but that hasn’t stopped us from trying. We continue to favor models of work that reward sustained performance and falsely believe that doubling or tripling our efforts will result in a proportional increase in creative output
On the positive side, being creative and resourceful are factors that increase production. The greater the ability to demonstrate talent and skill with proper guidance and precaution, the greater the possibility of profit.
In some ways, creativity leads to increased productivity. It defines productivity as the efficiency with which goods or services are produced, as expressed by various measures. It is a ratio of total output to a single input, or the total input used in a production process over a specific period.
But the obsession with productivity kills one’s creativity once it is used merely for personal interest rather than in general. If the aim of creating more production is just to increase your profit without considering the welfare of others, this is a big disadvantage because greed for wealth is revealed. Obsession, as defined, is a feeling, idea, or thought that completely occupies or intrudes on a person's mind about one specific thing in an unreasonable or normal way.
On the other hand, an obsession for productivity motivated by proper guidance is bound to prosper and develop through the creativity and skills exerted. The strong determination and willpower to succeed denote satisfaction and fulfillment. So, obsessing over something may not seem so abnormal in the sense that its primary goal is the benefit of all, and it was a blessing in disguise once offered selflessly.
Our everyday lives come with different tasks that need to be met in a particular set of time. Those are what we call responsibility as a citizen, a student, a son to our parents and a simple individual.
Obsession for being productive really eliminates our creativity if we see "to do" as a heavy challenge and not our interests to fulfill.
Productivity is the ability to generate goods or services called output which is connected to the amount of input we applied to bring those goods and services
In short, productivity is the result of an effort applied to a given work. We knew that at some point productiveness on a certain thing has a standard or a level needed to meet or surpass.
The management provides a lot of workload, a professor gives an assignment to his student through a time-limit presentation, parents with a task to their offspring and an individual that has to serve his country.
These scenarios in life come with pressure and full of expectations that are inevitable, we need not to let these beat us. Productivity will not come with perfectness even on the things we have control of.
Creativity is usually unnoticeable, it is working on our own phase, showing interest, enjoying what we can do and offering our best. Productivity tends to kill this natural skill once we depend on what is the standard that is set by others for defining productivity. Balancing productiveness with maintaining creativity is a good combination for passion

Last August 22, 2022, the Student Government of Bulacan State University (SG-BulSU) held a one-month campus tour for its freshmen, sophomores, and juniors’ students in different colleges and departments. The Industrial Engineering Department is scheduled, September 1, 2022, for the freshmen and September 5, 2022, for sophomores and juniors. Just as the new academic year has started, the SG gives an opportunity to all the BulSU students to step inside the campus and experience what it feels like to be a normalcollegestudent
Loaded with excitements, expectations, booths, and performances the campustourissurelyanunforgettableexperienceandagreatmotivationto begin this academic year It is best that the students explore their very own campus and know where their building is, the restrooms, the canteens, the registrar, and other places that they will be dealing with once the face-tofaceclassesstart.

The campus tour started at the activity center where the whole department is divided into class sections for a smooth and easier explanation With their “tour guide”, the whole class is loaded with useful and necessary information and fun factsaboutthedifferentcollegesand buildings found inside the main campus. It ended at the College of Social Science and Philosophy Building.
As if released from shackles and prison, the students redeemed their “collegelife”andfeltnormalstudents again Stepping inside the campus withtheirfriendsandclassmatesand socializing with other students from different colleges are just one of the few things that they surely miss. A one of a kind and tiring yet fruitful experience for the whole class that gathered exploring their very own campus

The 2nd semester for A.Y. 20222023 is nearing its end, and this is an opportunity for the aspiring industrial engineers to recall or reminisce the time that they’ve spent together during the academicyear.Especiallythetime they’ve spent with the exchange students from Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (UAJY) in Indonesia
Studentsfromdifferentyearlevels have spent most of their first semester with their fellow industrial engineering students fromIndonesia.Theysatinclasses together, studied and communicated using English as a common language, ate together during lunch time, hung out after school, and even went to eat out together outside of school days. Some of the exchange students have recently expressed their thoughts on their stay at BulSU and in the Philippines in general
According to the 2nd year exchange student who stayed at BSIE-2C,theythoughttheirstay
at BulSU was great, they love the students here because they are welcoming and kind, and even though the weather is so hot in the Philippines, they still had fun while studying together with the friends they made, and it gave them new experiences Another exchange student, one who is already in 4th year, saidthattheyenjoyedstaying in BulSU. Although at first they had doubts about it, eventually they found out that there are a lot of comfortable places and good food in the area, and they also met a lot of new friends from 2nd to 4th year who are humble and really helpful with the problems that they encountered
Evenifdifferentpeoplearenotfrom the same motherland and they havedifferentculturesandnorms,it doesn’t make a huge difference in how well they will get along with each other. As long as they have some commonality and friendliness, they will make good memories and experiences just like the BulSUans and the exchange students.

“I decided to join IEmmensity since I was part of our student publication from elementary to senior high school.SoIthought, whynotcontinue doingit?Frombeingamember,Iwas immediatelygivenabigresponsibility after months of being part of it, until I finally became its Editor-in-Chief. Admittedly, theexperiencedidn’t
allow me to improve my writing skills exponentially. Yet it did allow me to learn prioritization, leadership skills, and acknowledging the skills of your peers Beingasenior,it’simportantto look out for your juniors, read their potential and train someone who will replace you. As its former EIC, it doesn’t end once you transfer the leadership, because the guidance must continue yet still allowing them to move independently. Answer their questions and provide suggestions butthedecisionwillbeuptothem. As I graduate, I’m glad that I was part of this SDU and witnessed my juniors excellently filling the gap that the seniors left behind” pahayag ni Anjielyn Cortes (IEmmensity ‘22-’23 Head)
“IstartedtojoinIEducateasamemberin my freshman year, not entirely because of the incentives, pero dahil sa tingin ko among all the other SDU’s most suitable ako sa IEducate wherein I want to become an IE enthusiast, to educate others regarding our course, what we do and what we are capable of doing And from that, it leads me to where I am now astheheadofIEducate”
“It is both an honor and a great opportunity for me to become part of IEducate Iwoulddescribemyexperience in IEducate as indeed one for the books, kasi I never thought na magiging head ako and I never thought that I have the ability to lead not until I have been given the opportunity to unleash my potential and get out of my comfort zone I also havealotoflearningsinthisSDUwhichI canapplyandbringwithmeasIworkon a real set-up so I must say it serves as one of my training grounds to improve my skills and to improve myself as well And lastly, one of the things that I have learned and I will never forget being the head of IEducate is that behind every group ' s success is the collaborative efforts and dedication of each member.”
pahayag ni Maria Victoria Urbana (IEducate‘22-’23Head)“Tobehonestsinabikonoonnahindiako mag head or co-head in any SDU okay naakosamemberparamasmakapagfocus sana sa other responsibilities as a student. Pero naisip ko rin why not i-try korinkasialamkonamannamaymagguiderinsakinasfirsttimehead Sauna, struggle and kinakabahan kasi first time kolangnag-handlengSDUandashead pa pero noong nagtagal in-enjoy ko na langdinkasipararinnamansakapwaIE ‘yong gagawin naming mga heads” ani LezzethFlores(IEnvest‘22-’23Head).
“I got to know IExtension because of its former leader. My interest was piqued by the community services they provide, and it was then that I realized the value of industrial engineering students in areas other than academics Then it was even more proven when I became an official member of this group. Each student became more aware of reality and gave its members the opportunity to prove that you can do something even if you are still a student,”
“IExtension has made my college experience more enjoyable and meaningful, and I can speak from experience as both a member and the organization's leader. My entire experienceleadingthisunithasbeen wonderful. The responsibility caused me some initial hesitance, but it also providedmewiththechancetolearn from every initiative and activity we undertake. No doubt, this unit contributed a major part in my personal growth and will continue to dosointhefuture”saadniNicoleJoy Realingo(IExtension‘22-’23Head).
I decided to join and it was fun. My experience in koro Inhinyero was unforgettable. I got to know more people and enhanced my communication skills. They are open for suggestions and accept our ideas that make us comfortable to share it with them I practice my vocals and learn new things about myself that I haven't seen before” bahagi ni Ivy Baterina (Koro Inhinyero ‘22-’23 Head)

“Wala talaga akong balak sumali sa mga SDU but I was invited and convinced by my friend to try joining This is me getting out of my comfort zone MySDUexperiencehasbecame a big part of my personal growth. I was able to introduced myself to things that I ended up enjoying And throughoutmyexperience, everything we have accomplished has provided me a sense of self-fulfillment.” pahayag ni Marvie Cruz (IEnteractive ‘22-’23Head).
“My experience as a part of this SDU has been memorable and incredibly satisfying I am honored to be in this SDU for 3 years now wherein I served as the assistant student research coordinator when I was in third year and currently, I am the student research coordinator of this unit. I havealwayscalledthepeopleinthis unit not just as members but as "family" since the collaborative work done does not only include effort but bonds and trust towards each other as well. “I joined this organization when I was in my 1st year college My classmate said that I have a talent in singing and he knew I can share this with others.
