In one article we are going to look at the power of friendships, which can be very positive. Unfortunately, they can also be quite negative depending on who’s involved. We’re going to look at friendships very much from the “plus” side and why the power of friendship is especially important during the winter months. See “The Power of Friendships” for the discussion. In case you don’t know, January is identified as mental wellness month. We all have “good days” and “bad days” and the truth is, there’s really no better time to take stock of our own mental health than right now, at the start of the new year. In the article “Understanding Mental Wellness” we provide you with tips and information you can use to evaluate your own mental health and potentially take yourself in new directions. Now over the past few years – the pandemic had plenty to do with it – there have been fewer and fewer people volunteering. Yet the reality is that volunteers are always needed. personal finances. None of us have control over everything that impacts our personal finances, but looking at how we spend our money could reveal some areas of spending we could actually tighten up. Get some ideas on where to begin by reading our article, “Improving Your Finances in 2024.” And finally, we look at gun safety – everything from the rules of safe firearm handling to protective gear for hunters. So that’s what you’ll find in this opening issue for 2024. As we move through the year, issue by issue, we will continue our focus on areas of health that we began in 2023. We will also have very specialized content in issues focused on seniors, home improvement, and gardening, as well as our annual “health and wellness” issue and our beautiful, annual Bridal Issue that will highlight the true stories of local brides – maybe someone you know! Improving Your Finances in 2024 SOURCE: washingtonpost.com (edited)

With your personal finances, there’s a lot you don’t have control over. But there are some concrete steps you can take to start 2024 on a better financial footing. Here are eight easy ways to prepare your finances for improvement. Review your monthly bank and credit card statements / Looking back can be painful, but you need to own your financial truth. And you can’t do that if you don’t have accurate information. Before you make any financial resolutions for this new year, take an assessment of your 2023 expenditures. Total your emergency savings / This figure may be nonexistent or pitiful, but look at what you saved and honestly ask yourself: “Could I have done better?” If you couldn’t that’s okay, but for those who could do better, aim to improve your savings for 2024. And you can’t do that if you aren’t honest about your spending and how you might cut back to save more. Total all your debts / The truth about what you owe is often uncomfortable. But embracing your debt fully – credit card balances, loans, even your mortgage – can be a powerful motivator to develop a plan to aggressively pay it down. Check the security strength of your financial accounts / If you use the same password for a lot of your accounts it makes you vulnerable on multiple sites. One data breach can give hackers the information they need to attack other accounts. Or, maybe you still haven’t set up the authentication step your bank has been bugging you about when you sign on to your online account. Before this

month ends, make sure you have enough barriers between criminals and your cash. Check your credit report and credit score / By law, every 12 months you are entitled to one free credit report from each of the major credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. At the onset of the pandemic, the bureaus began offering people a free look every week at their credit reports. That practice is now permanent. You can get the free weekly reports by going to annualcreditreport.com. If your score is low, start taking steps to improve it by paying bills on time or paying down debt. Continued on page 6

Additionally, checking your credit reports regularly can help you spot mistakes, as well as signs of potential fraud or identity theft. Look at your Social Security statement / It’s important to review your Social Security statement because it has so much information about your earnings, estimated benefits and how much you or your family would receive in disability, survivor or retirement benefits. Sign up now for an online account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount. Review your retirement account balances over the last 12 months / Now is the time to check how your account did in 2023 and see if you’re saving enough. If you haven’t been saving enough, consider increasing the percentage of your pay that you’re investing for retirement. Assess your financial highs and lows for 2023 / You need to see what’s behind you as you make your way forward. By examining your bank and credit card statements, you can see if you spent too much eating out, money that could have been used to boost your emergency fund. Assess what needs to be done.

Williamstown - The Forgotten Past by the SHPC

The Slatington History Preservation Committee would like to share some history information about Williamstown, located in Washington Township, Lehigh County, PA, between Slatington and Emerald. Founded by Henry Williams in approximately 1858, the village or hamlet, had its origin to support slate mining and manufacturing. It included a school, store, church, cemetery, and houses. He opened his first quarry at the curve on the left side of the road after leaving Slatington going to Emerald. It was called both the Henry Williams and the Williamstown Quarry. Later he purchased the Franklin Quarry near Emerald. Houses for the slate workers were built along the road between the Williamstown Quarry and Williamstown Lane. The inhabitants were Welsh, German, and Hungarian and numbered between 75 and 100. There were also three private homes on Williamstown Lane. Fire disaster occurred on July 5, 1910 when a row of nine frame tenement houses were completely destroyed. The fire was discovered about 1 o’clock by John Roberts, a motorman, on a car running between this place and Slatedale, when he noticed flames shooting from the roof of one of the dwelling houses. He drove his car with all speed to town and notified the fire company which hastened to the scene. By the time they reached there the fire had gained such headway that they were unable to cope with the blaze. About 2 o’clock, with a terrific roar, the roofs of the houses fell in and sent showers of sparks into the air. The collapsing of the roofs scared many of the foreigners in the nearby houses and they quickly packed up their belongings and got ready to move. It is said that

Schnecksville Notary

nearly eighty people, all Slavs, lived inthe nine houses. Quarry disaster occurred on March 1, 1894, as seven workers were working in a tunnel inside the Williamstown Quarry, at that time owned by Owen T. Williams, when the roof caved in. The quarry was seventy-five to a hundred feet deep. Within the quarry various tunnels diverge, penetrating the rock under the ground and following to the dip of the veins of slate. The men had been at work for an hour when the layers of rock above them came down with a thunderous roar and a huge mass of debris shut the entrance to the tunnel. Respondents went to work immediately, trying to unblock the tunnel. The first man they found was William Richard Jones. He was at first buried out of sight, except for one of his hands. Using this hand he managed to scrape away the loose debris around his face. After extricating Jones, deeper in the tunnel they found Josiah (Joseph) Remaley. The rescue party kept digging and after several grueling hours pushing their way through fifteen feet of debris they discovered the forty-eight year old engineer, Samuel Kreitz, with crushed legs and lacerations on his head. The search for the other four victims continued for nearly a week with the rescue party working day and night. On March 6 and 7 searchers found the mangled bodies of Griffith Pritchard, who was the owner’s brother-in-law, age 56, and three Hungarian laborers. All seven men died from the cave-in. Presently all that remains is a small home which was once a church, the cemetery, and two of the original homes, all on Williamstown Lane. The Williamstown Quarry is filled-in, the factory, store, school, original church, and row homes are gone.

Understanding Mental Wellness SOURCE: integrativelifecenter.com (edited)

January is mental wellness month. According to the World Health Organization, mental wellness is “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Being in a good mental wellness state of mind doesn’t necessarily mean you have an absence of mental health issues. It does mean however, you possess some or all of these positive mental wellness traits: • Contentment: Feeling secure no matter what your circumstances. • Resiliency: You can stand up to and deal with stressful situations and then return to a sense of normality. • Work/Life Balance: Having this balance is healthy and means you can separate your home and work life, allowing time for both work and play.

• Ability to Build/Maintain Relationships: You understand the importance of other people in your life and use your social abilities and confidence to adhere to the concept of give and take. • Self-confidence: These individuals have a strong sense of self, use their strengths to their advantage, and learn to overcome any weaknesses. • Unwavering Sense of Purpose: When you have meaning in your life, you tend to take more positive steps to accomplish your goals. The Power of Friendships

Source: jedfoundation.org (edited)

There is great power in friendships. Throughout the year, friendships provide connection and in some cases, healing. However, during the winter when you may venture out less and therefore have fewer chance encounters with people you know, it’s even more important to have friends you can literally call on

in person, by phone or by text to keep the powers of friendship alive and active. The Power of Friendship There’s a reason there are millions of songs written about friendship. Friends are vital to our well-being and are some of the most powerful bonds we have. Having social connection is also one of the best ways to take care of our own mental health. When friendships are healthy and supportive, they improve our confidence and self-worth and help us cope with serious life events. They also boost our feeling of belonging and encourage us to make changes when we struggle. Toxic or Unhealthy Friendships While close friendships can support your mental health, relationships that have a lot of conflict and inequality can hurt your emotional well-being. We

hear the term “toxic” a lot, but what does that actually mean? Examples of toxic friendships include: • Encouraging or enabling behaviors that are harmful and not helpful such as substance misuse • Unbalanced relationships or a relationship that’s a one-way street (all give and no take or all take and no give) • Continuing to focus on – and repeatedly talk about – shared worries, wounds, or challenges without including possible solutions. Supporting the Mental Health of Friends It’s often assumed that taking care of mental health challenges is a job for a mental health professional, but we can all play important roles in supporting the mental health and well-being of people we know. Our friends are healthier because they know that we care about them, and trust that we’re there to listen, play, laugh, and cry with them. And, we get the same benefits from having their friendship. What Is a Friendship? A friendship is really just a series of small but meaningful acts of connection and comfort – like checking in on someone when you know things are hard, celebrating a success, reaching out just

because you like hearing each other’s voice, and spending time together. These small acts show that you’re there for each other. And, when a friend is struggling or doesn’t have many other folks in their life to support them, small acts can make an enormous difference in their sense of well-being. Here are some ways to be a supportive friend: Connect regularly / Reaching out to say “hi,” share a story or a laugh, make plans to do something together, or just to check in are the healthy things we do that boost happiness and keep us connected to the people we care about. Even if it’s just sending a text, a little outreach can go a long way. Share your own struggles / If you’ve struggled with your own emotional ups and downs, and you are comfortable sharing, consider talking a bit about what you’ve been through and what’s helped. Your friend might be nervous about opening up, so sharing your story can be a good way to show them you’re a safe person to share with.

Uff selli dutt mer’s gleenere Hols , Nor’d schteigt die Flamm gaar hell un schtolz; un wann der Schtormwind drauss haust, Wie dann der Zuck im Schannscht' braust. The old Fireplace The old poets smartly love The wood fire in a fireplace; Their writing makes us homesick – I read it gladly – it brings me home! To me it’s spoken out of the heart; I feel like if I could see it. Nowadays it’s no longer the case;

One sees coal stoves everywhere And with the people that are wealthy A fire is not once to be seen! You astonished? It’s so – you can count on it – The heat comes up out of the cellar! This is often regularly annoying; Where do we sit down? What do we look at? I am used to the same old routine And nothing seems right – we look for the fire! Away with such fashions – they’re worth nothing, Give me the old fireplace. For that place, I carry [fast] in my heart Always a homesickness pain; Whatever I am doing; no matter where I am, Then my thoughts go back there. It remains for me dear and worthy, The old warm fireplace. The back log was thick and round, And out in front the andirons – On those one put smaller wood pieces, Then the flame rises very brightly and proudly; And when the windstorms rage outside How the draft roars in the chimney. One has the wood supply prepared And piled up on one side; And on the other side, following an old rule, The well-worn woven-seat chair. The tongs and shovel have their purpose; One stands them there in the chimney’s corner. That mantel shelf – what holds so much – The candlesticks and coffee grinder, The irons, large and small, One sees all standings together there; The matches also included – One could not do without them! Now, in the evening when one sit and looks How it still sparks in the embers! It glows and scatters [them] – white, black and red – At once completely lively, and now dead; We sit and think – one becomes completely still, And can just see what he will. How nice when one spends the evening At the fire until it burns down; One thinks the embers are seeking rest, The white ash[es] chill and cover them up; They create a dreamy state there, Like eyes, when they are sleepy! January 4, 2024 || townandcountrygazette.com

Does one have a dear friend beside him? One sees much more during such time! When two are looking together, The hearth fire [appears] a merry, good friend! And if you’re one from that pair, Then don’t willingly say, who the other was! Here it’s stated, the young often become Like very infatuated with and [act] unexpected! They see in the glowing embers A house before them – a lovely possession – And want to go away with one another To live together in this beautiful place. I don’t think much about magic – It may be, there is something to that! One thing I know with utmost certainty: There is no [other] place like that (the fireplace); It spooks me always before the heart And wakens a world of heartfelt [joyous?] pain. [If] I think of that old mantel-area, Then my childhood comes back again; Then my good father still lives – Then my mom is the cook again! And my siblings – all scattered – Gather together at the evening time. Before me, a little boy, tender and small, Life lies very beautiful! The expectation smiles freely on Like the fantasy [seen] in the embers there! I have what pleases my heart here, Let the raw world roar out there! [Henry Harbaugh was a German Reformed (UCC, today) pastor and theology professor, so he was just as much at home communicating in German as he was with his Mudderschprooch, Dutch, and this poem reflect that. I have made some changes in the text to reflect Dutch grammar and spelling; I hope I didn’t spoil the poetic meter.]

Gun Safety Tips SOURCE: Various

Here are a dozen vital tips for safe firearm handling from gunsafetynow.com: • Always treat the gun as if it's loaded. • Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. • Always keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. • Always keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it. • Never point the gun at anything you don't intend to destroy. • Be sure of your target and what is beyond it. • Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of the gun you are using. • Always use proper ammunition. • Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before loading and shooting. • If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, hold your shooting position for several seconds; then with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, carefully unload the gun. • Don't rely on the gun's safety to keep it from firing.

• Be aware of your surroundings when handling guns so you don't trip or lose your balance and accidentally point and/or fire the gun at anyone or anything. Hunter and Firearm Safety Millions of people hunt every year. The goal is for each and every one of those hunters to return home safety at the end of the hunt. While hunting is one of the safest recreational activities there is, even one injury is one too many. Young hunters particularly should complete firearms safety training. Research shows that as more students have completed firearms safety training, there’s been a corresponding decrease in the number of injuries and fatalities that occur as a result of firearms-related hunting incidents. Taking the Shot As stated in the tips above, the rules of safe firearms handling include treating every firearm as if it is loaded. Never assume it is not loaded. Also, always control the muzzle of the gun, keeping it pointed in a safe direction. Remember that anything that the muzzle points to is in the crosshairs. Don’t overlook the possibility of a ricochet. When taking aim, be sure of your target and what is beyond. You alone are responsible for knowing what is in front of your target, near your target and beyond your target. If you are uncertain about any of the three, don’t take the shot. Until you are ready to take the shot, keep your News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || January 4, 2024

finger off the trigger. Your finger should be outside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot. Protective gear Hunters' eyes and ears are vulnerable to a number of potential hazards while hunting, so it’s important to protect them. Firearms create a high decibel sound that can damage hearing. Also, when a firearm is fired, it sends the projectile down range. Along with the projectile, the firearm also discharges small particles of the projectile, burning gas and other residue that can damage your eyes. Always wear safety glasses and ear protection. Finally, blaze orange has made hunting safer.

Spotting a hunter wearing camo is hard, but wearing blaze orange makes you visible to others hunting in the area.

My Organ Recital submitted by Harold ‘Nick” Seyfried

I’m turning eighty Oh what a fright My heart is still ticking But not all is right

No more running the weed wacker Or washing and waxing the car No more hotels or bar room I can’t drive very far

I’ve got aches in my knees., They’re rubbing down to the bones Great pain in my feet and Arthritis in my toes

The right to say, my life has been good It’s more than fair I’m passing gas louder, And I’m upright taking on air

High blood pressure pills Post nasal drip, Don’t expect miracles Or any back flips

I whistle and sing Some beautiful sounds My outlook is great So what can go wrong?

All kinds of allergies The leaves and the grass It’s really becoming A pain in my a-I can’t run the snowblower Or clean gutters anymore Can’t climb the ladders No more aerial chores

$ $ $ $ $ $ $

Cataracts, hearing aides A walker and a cane If I use them, what do I really have to gain?

I’m driving my car and took a wrong turn Oh what a fool I drove thru a fence I am now sitting in my neighbor’s pool

Holiday season perfect time to send a caring message to Brighten a Veteran’s day, possibly save a life Submitted by Joseph Butera

In the midst of the holiday season, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) reminds everyone who knows a veteran to reach out and let that person know someone cares about them. The holiday season can be exceptionally stressful for some veterans dealing with militaryrelated mental health challenges such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Military veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than Americans who never served in the military. For female veterans, the risk factor is 2.2 times more likely. “Taking the time to reach out to a veteran can not only make their day but it could save their life. A caring message might seem like a small gesture, but it will have a positive impact,” said Maj. Gen. Mark Schindler, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and head of the DMVA. “Anyone with a connection to a veteran can send a caring message, including family members, friends, advocates and health care providers.”

A caring message can take the form of a holiday card, letter, text, email, phone call or any communication. Schindler said that current service members and their families should be thought about too, and that it is important to reach out year-round, not just during the holidays. Pennsylvania serves more than 700,000 veterans, the fourth largest veteran population in the country. It is one of 54 states and territories taking part in the Pennsylvania Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among our Service Members, Veterans and their Families. The Pennsylvania Governor’s Challenge team works with sister agencies and departments, several educational institutions, and a broad group of not-for-profit and faith-based organizations to develop and implement statewide and regional suicide prevention best practices. Another resource available to veterans facing challenging times is DMVA’s PA VETConnect, an outreach program that enables the DMVA to concentrate services from within communities where our veterans live. This initiative allows the DMVA to utilize community-based providers to fill gaps in services for homelessness, employment, mental health, addiction and more. Visit www.dmva.pa.gov/vetconnect for more information. If you are a veteran in crisis — or you are concerned about one — free, confidential support is available 24/7. Call the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 and then pressing 1, send a text message to 838255, or chat online at www. veteranscrisisline.net/get-help-now/chat.
