“I think rings are pretty intimate things,” says Bri Shimer, manager of studio operations at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts. “You see it all the time; it is always close to you.” A wedding ring should be extra special, and crafting your significant other’s wedding ring yourself is as special as it gets. GoggleWorks, located in downtown Reading, offers classes in metalsmithing. Students work with silver or precious metal clay to create custom jewelry, and the classes are suitable for both beginners and pros alike. Rooted in Faith and Grounded in Community Rooted & Grounded Cafe was founded by Jared and Sherie Weaver in January of 2025. Since then, their family-run cafe has become a cozy community hub. Located in the borough of Kenhorst, Rooted & Grounded is dedicated to quality and community. Their espresso drinks are made with organic Kathmandu Coffee, a premium blend from Nepal. Chai lattes are crafted with rich and spicy, all-natural Black Scottie Chai concentrate, and their pastries are freshly baked in-house. Rooted & Grounded is best known for its coffee and hot breakfast; however, its menu is extensive, featuring paninis, soups, salads and açaí bowls. “It was just our dream to do something as a family,” Jared says. As members of the Kenhorst Mennonite Church just a block away, the Weavers are active members of the community. When asked what he loves most about running Rooted & Grounded, Jared said, “Besides being able to do this as a family...honestly, just being able to build relationships within the community.” For more info visit rootedgroundedcafe.com. — Abigail Angstadt

White Pine & Pearl is a mobile catering company founded by Berks County resident Jessica Giannotti. The business specializes in charcuterie boards — decorative spreads of cold cuts and cheeses, complemented with assorted crackers, fruits and nuts. Every board is crafted with care. As someone who has been working in the food industry for about 20 years, Giannotti says, “We really love catering to people…you know, food brings people together and creates memories, and I think that’s really special.” In addition to charcuterie boards, White Pine & Pearl offers a small mobile cart rented out for events. Giannotti curates miniature spreads for guests as they approach the cart. “It’s not a whole spread, but it’s much more personalized,” Giannotti says. White Pine & Pearl’s products are highly customizable. Giannotti works with her customers to curate a snacking experience adapted to their functional and aesthetic preferences. White Pine & Pearl is perfect for parties, picnics, work events or even casual snacking. For more info visit whitepineandpearl.shop. — Abigail Angstadt

Beyond Beauty B Y M A R I A N F R A N C E S W O L B E R S | P H O T O S B Y K E L S E Y R E NE E P H O T O G R A P H Y “I’d never thought about doing this — ever,” reveals Amy Ames, owner of the unique wig boutique business called Grace & Grit Beyond Beauty in West Reading, born to help women who are struggling with hair loss and the accompanying loss of confidence and fractured identity. “I lost my hair. And you go through so much frustration… It’s a lot of money ordering a wig that’s $1,500 or more only to find that the color is off.” Ames would have to send wigs back at her own expense for shipping, about $300 to $400 every time. She went through five years of struggle, leading her to contact boutiques to do deep research; she sought to know the background information behind the toppers and wigs business. “I knew I was doing it well when I found a good wig because no one knew I was wearing one. But I never let on.” The day came when she finally shared her secret. This led to knowing that she wasn’t alone, that many women were interested

in dealing with hair loss caused by different reasons, including aging, alopecia, multiple surgeries, prescription drug reactions, hormonal changes and more. She says, “I was working as a health coach — I had lost over 100 pounds — and I went to this networking event. In the back of the room was a woman who had more scalp showing than hair.” Ames thought to herself, “She’s got more courage than me! I don’t dare keep my own hair loss a secret.” So, she announced it. “They all gasped. They were all taken aback. And I said I’m perfectly willing to help anyone struggling with this.” That woman, she says, became her very first client. Three months later, she started her business.

Her Own Brand of Wigs

Grace & Grit “completely just happened,” she says. “I knew what I had to do.” Help came from a supportive husband and the Small Business Association, who

recognized the value of offering not just wig fittings and sales but the one-on-one help that Ames herself was capable of delivering — the path back to confidence. Says Ames, the kinds of questions that hair loss sufferers have include: Can I go out in the rain with a wig? How do you go to a sleepover? Will I be judged? “All of my jobs have been helping people,” says Ames. “I’ve served over 140 women and teens since starting, and most are making the purchase of human hair. It’s just better. Some synthetic wigs and other brands of wigs only last three to six months if they’re worn every day. Human hair not only lasts longer but has movement, and you can get custom coloring.” Launching her own wig brand was a no-brainer. Her Penn Avenue shop also features local artisanal handbags, jewelry and chemicalfree lotions. She says folks often come in just to shop, and often they know someone who’s seeking solutions to balding and hair loss.

INSIDE INF O COMFORT IN PRIVACY.

“I have a privacy screen, and we typically have a try-on session, measuring the head and so on. It can be very emotional.”

STYLED TO SUIT.

The wigs come in uncut: “I collaborate with a stylist to cut it on the client’s head so it looks like them.”

Roxy Jackson makeup artist

BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS P H O T O B Y J O HN A . S E C O G E S, S E C O G E S P H O T O G R A P HIC S Animated and lively — yet exuding a cool , calm and centered vibe, this Berks County makeup ar tist specializes in making people look and feel fabulous. Roxy Jackson is a mom to two girls and a huge fan of “uniqueness.” She delivers special flair to make por traits, ads and weddings beautifully memorable.

Q | Were you always interested in makeup? I have always been an artist and obsessed with magazines and music videos. I took a lot of art and dance classes growing up, at Yocum Institute, as a child. I started making my own art as a teen, painting and drawing and setting up photo shoots. I loved thrifting and making my own clothes. I even did a stint as a tattoo apprentice. One of my fondest memories was when my mom used to let me put makeup on her when I was only four or five years old. She was a cool rocker chick, so I’d

10 JANUARY 2026 | BERKSCOUNTYLIVING.COM

recreate looks for her; she let me have fun and experiment. My first job out of high school was with Glamour Shots.

Q | With all that talent, how did you zero in on makeup artistry? Out of all the creative arts, I felt that using makeup was a way to help women feel confident and happy. I still do other forms of art on the side, but makeup can be very empowering — it’s a good way for people to express themselves. We are living in a world where people judge you by your looks, and clients

who take private lessons find that applying makeup with skill shows a level of elegance and expression. I love authenticity. And I like natural with a trendy edge. But I also don’t want people to think they can’t leave the house without makeup.

Q | What fills your schedule? Just in the past three days [laughs], I did two bridal parties over the weekend plus styling for a hospital, including hair, makeup and wardrobe styling for their instructional videos. If it’s a large bridal party, I have assistants helping out. My clients might book a trial run before an event coming up. It’s a good way to get to know my clients, and I recommend it.

Q | How do you decide on products to use? I have a huge kit! I’ve refined it to hold the best-performing products. For a wedding, the makeup in the bridal party must look good up close and last for 8 to 12 hours. Ahead of time,

I usually ask for some “inspiration photos,” and they generally come with ideas. I ask about the vibe of their wedding and their flowers and jewelry, too. I can work with many different skin types and looks, using products for different situations.

F UN F A C T S “I met my husband through a mutual friend who told me we shared the same birthday. We spent the night talking… We’ve been married 20 years now!” “I love outdoor yoga at Gring’s Mill, live music, my two cats and going to old places like drive-ins. The Santander Performing Arts Center with that architecture and interior details? Beautiful.” roxy-jacksonmakeup-artistry. square.site.

What began as a one-man operation in Berks County has evolved into Irish Creek Enterprises, Inc., a multidivision construction company that serves residential and commercial properties throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. When his daughter Sarah returned to the company in 2017 after working for other general contractors, she brought fresh perspectives that transformed Irish Creek Enterprises, Inc. from primarily excavation work into comprehensive construction services. father-daughter team navigates the delicate balance of honoring decades of proven practices while embracing new technologies and methods. This is their story. In 1993, David Phillips started an excavation company with no employees and no equipment, financing the venture entirely with $5,000 borrowed on a credit card. His strategy was unconventional but effective — rather than competing directly with established contractors, he assembled teams of smaller operators for larger projects, taking all the risk while paying them on a time and material basis. “Back in ‘93, there were a lot of smaller excavating companies that really did have good guys with good equipment,” David explains.

“They just didn’t have the expertise to bid on the bigger jobs and do the infrastructure work.” His solution filled a crucial gap in the market while building relationships that would serve the company for decades. A turning point came in 1997 when one of his longtime subcontractors, tired of dealing with employees and insurance, finally put an offer on paper to sell his operation — after hinting at wanting to sell every couple of months for several years prior. That acquisition brought seven employees, some with more than 20 years of experience, all of whom David welcomed with full seniority recognition. Today, Irish Creek Enterprises, Inc. operates two complementary divisions: Construction Management, General Construction and its original Excavating division. Drew and Elizabeth started their love story when she was shadowing for her “big girl job” as a sales team member at a State Farm agent’s office and met Drew, who was already employed there, aspiring to open his own State Farm agency one day. Their first date consisted of throwing vases at a wall and smashing wooden stools while screaming at the top of their lungs at a rage room. At their one-month anniversary, Drew took Elizabeth to The Melting Pot, her favorite restaurant at the time, and had the table covered in rose petals.

After life dealt a crazy few months, Elizabeth requested a “princess day” and named one Tuesday just that. She recalls, “I told him to plan something special and make me feel like a princess.” Drew, of course, came through. He scheduled dinner at one of their favorite restaurants. Elizabeth remembers, “He started saying some really deep and cute things. I felt all squishy inside, and I had a gut feeling something might happen.” After dinner, Drew suggested they drive out to the beach, residing in Pensacola, FL, at the time. On the drive, it started pouring rain. It was still raining when they arrived at the parking lot, but Drew exited the car anyway and went over to open Elizabeth’s door and bent down on one knee. “I thought he was tying his shoe,” Elizabeth says. “Then I saw a sparkle in the dark. I’m sure he said some really nice stuff, but I blacked out. All I remember is it started with ‘Elizabeth, you just made this so easy for me’ and ended with ‘Will you marry me?’”

It wasn’t their original plan, but the couple was married on Nov. 7, 2025, at Stokesay Castle in Reading. Elizabeth threw everything together in 10 weeks and, as she says, “would not have been able to do it without Berks County’s badass wedding vendors.” The original plan was to travel from their new home in Berks to have a 200+ guest wedding in Mobile, AL. Then Drew was diagnosed with stage 3 testicular cancer in March, four months into starting his new business, Drew Miller State Farm. Says Elizabeth about wedding planning during Drew’s treatment, “The upcoming big day felt more and more like a deadline to be ‘okay.’ We called off the BIG event and mentally accepted that wedding plans may look different than what we had expected.” With Drew done with treatment and his scan and bloodwork all showing signs of success, they started to think, “What if?” The ceremony became an intimate event; just 14 people were in attendance, including the newlyweds. FOR YOUR PERFECT WEDDING family only came together to celebrate what was truly most important. The outdoor ceremony saw them married by Pastor Gary, light a unity candle, then at the reception enjoy a lovely dinner and delicious and beautiful cake by Fresh Cake by Suzy of Wyomissing. Says Elizabeth of the change in plans, “I had time to grieve all those things I originally planned and reflect on what matters most at the end of the day: marrying the love of my life — bald head or not. Cancer or no cancer.” For Drew, the highlight of their wedding day was simply “seeing Elizabeth walk down the aisle.” For the bride, though, narrowing it down to a single moment is hard. She says, “The whole ceremony. I was so excited to see Drew. I hadn’t seen him all day. All the nerves really melted away when we were finally holding hands and looking at each other.”

The new bride, who works part-time as a stylist at Dressed In Love Bridal Suite in West Reading and at Van Scoy Jewelers in Wyomissing, and groom plan to honeymoon in Antigua at the St. James Club in the near future. Other future plans include growing Drew’s State Farm agency, enjoying good health, being cancer-free and adding children to the family in a few years.

Pete 28 JANUARY 2026 | BERKSCOUNTYLIVING.COM

5•25•25 T HE BE GINNING

Fast and furious, small but mighty — all are accurate descriptions of Becky Dodson and Pete Specht’s love story and wedding day. The newlyweds first met on a school bus headed to Governor Mifflin (for Becky) and Berks Catholic (for Pete). In fact, their first kiss happened on a bus, and their first date was a group venture to the Berkshire Mall to purchase the new Nirvana CD — simpler times. But once Becky got her driver’s license and stopped riding the bus, the two lost touch. That is until 30 years later when Pete discovered Becky was a singer and was set to perform with her band, Mixtape Unplugged, at Doc & Bubba’s in Mohnton in April of 2024. The reunion really got the ball rolling. Then came a date at the West Reading Motor Club, a trip to Italy and moving in together and combining families.

T HE P ROP OS A L

It happened the morning of Dec. 7, 2024, just after the two hosted their first holiday party together at home the night prior. Because each was previously married, they often discussed if they’d be willing to remarry. Each was. In fact, jokingly, every trip they’d take, one would propose to the other. In the fall of 2024, though, things got more serious when Becky and Pete did some engagement ring window shopping in King of Prussia. Peter took notes and delivered them to Gipprich Jewelers in Shillington, asking if they could do better with cost and quality than the big box retailers. Of course they could! The morning after the party, while laying in bed discussing the night before, Pete sat up and said, “I’d like to host these parties every year with you. We make a wonderful team, and I can’t imagine spending my life with anyone besides you. So, Becky, will you marry me and make me the happiest man, because I promise, if you say ‘yes,’ I’ll make you the happiest woman.” Of course, Becky said, “Yes!” BERKSCOUNTYLIVING.COM | JANUARY 2026

The intimate wedding — the first hosted by West Reading Motor Club — was attended by family and close friends, including Becky’s parents, Richard and Candace Dodson, and Pete’s parents, Scott and Judy Specht. Zeke Specht, the groom’s oldest son, served as best man, and Dayna Dodson, the bride’s daughter, was maid of honor. Rounding out the wedding party were Che’ Specht, Pete’s youngest son, and Bella Specht, Pete’s only daughter. John Dodson, the bride’s brother, acted as officiant, and Bethany Stanco and Meredith Conrad, Pete’s sisters, were readers. It was truly a family affair. At the reception, the venue was decorated simply but sweetly with taper candles and fresh flowers in many colors (but mostly pinks and oranges) along with a huge organza floral display as arranged by Events by Kelly Florist of Leesport, who also designed the bridal bouquets and boutonnieres. Guests enjoyed a cocktail hour with a charcuterie board grazing table as well as passed hors d’oeuvres, including pork pot stickers, bacon-wrapped scallops and gorgonzola cheese balls. Signature cocktails celebrated the bride and groom. Becky’s was “The Bees Knees” as

“Beez” is Becky’s family nickname. It was a spin on an Italian Hugo Spritz. Pete’s was “The Specht Smash” – a blend of coconut tequila, pineapple juice and a touch of orgeat syrup topped with toasted coconut flakes and pineapple leaves. The dinner buffet featured Caesar salad, penne Bolognese, chicken bruschetta, short ribs and shrimp scampi. The cake, baked by Rosita Dobson of Rose’s Cakes, Confections & More in Shillington, a family friend, was a two-tier cannoli cake with whipped cream frosting. The newlyweds enjoyed a first dance to You are the Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne. For Becky, the highlight of the day was “knowing, without a single doubt, that I have found, and was marrying, my best friend and that we were bringing our families together as one. It was a day free from stress, filled only with love, and that was the highlight for me.” Pete says his wedding day was the greatest day of his life, explaining, “Becky truly is my best friend and the girl of my dreams in every way, and to be able to devote our lives to one another really is a dream come true.”

Pete, a full-time musician and real estate agent, and Becky, a senior account executive for Gartner, plan to keep creating music separately and together with Flux Capacitor, The Uptown Band, Mixtape Unplugged and the PBS Special Duo, featuring just the two of them. The Cumru Township residents look forward to living here in Berks and making memories with their children and families.

Peter first met Angie, a forensic specialist as part of a mental health provider team, when she became a customer of his as an account representative for State Farm. He recalls, “As soon as we started talking, we hit it off. We became Facebook friends and commented and liked each other’s posts. One night, she asked me out for a drink, and I actually turned her down. But I couldn’t get her out of my head. A week later, I asked her out. On our first date, she hopped on the back of my motorcycle, and we’ve been inseparable ever since.”

T HE P ROP OS A L

Angie’s mother had just retired, and everyone planned to head to a celebratory dinner one Sunday. Recalls Peter, “That was my chance.” But it didn’t exactly go according to plan. The Thursday prior, Peter’s retina detached. He’d planned to get the ring on Friday, and a detached retina didn’t even stop him! He says, “After work, I raced down to King of Prussia and raced back, all the while only seeing with my left eye!” He got home, hid the ring in his hoodie, and when everyone was enjoying dinner, he kicked off the celebration speech for Angie’s mother and transitioned into the surprise proposal.

The pair were married on May 17, 2025, at the Reading Country Club. In attendance was Angie’s mother, Theresa Schwartz, and stepfather, Darel Schwartz, as well as Peter’s mother, Cindy Morrotto. Michael Morrotto, Peter’s brother, served as best man, and Aisha Adams, the bride’s best friend since ninth grade, was maid of honor. Kathleen Mendez, Angela’s cousin, was matron of honor. Rounding out the wedding party were bridesmaids Skyler Mohr, Ciara Morrotto, Kristen Kreider and Carrie Bausch; groomsmen Saige Morrotto, Robert Algeo and Jason Bausch; and flower girl was Luna Mohr. The couple credits Kayla Cepeda and the Reading Country Club team for helping the day go off without a hitch.

JUS T M ARRIED The Morrottos were also elated with how their ideas and décor came together, including the personal touches they chose like wooden cutouts of guest names and thank you cards set at their place settings. For Peter, the highlight of the day was simply “Angie walking down the aisle.” For Angie, it was the ceremony itself and the exchanging of vows. “It was a dream come true to have a long-time close family friend, Reverend Laddie Benton, officiate our wedding,” she says. Guests were welcomed to the reception with the DJ from Red Tie Affairs in Lancaster (playing the Philadelphia Eagles fight song) and décor shades of lilac, pink and silver. They enjoyed a buffet meal including braised beef short ribs with burgundy sauce, grilled mahi mahi with pineapple bruschetta, garlic broccoli, rustic parmesan fingerling potatoes, baked mac & cheese and fried bourbon sweet potatoes. The cakes, by Amy’s Creative Cakes, Quakertown, were lemon with raspberry icing and carrot cake for the groom. The newlyweds enjoyed their first dance to Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran.

For their honeymoon, the Sinking Spring residents spent the first night at a lovely bed and breakfast before jetting off for a week in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, where they enjoyed recharging and holding spider monkeys. Upon their return, being the Eagles fans they are, they spent a day in Philadelphia touring Lincoln Financial Field and then headed home how it all started — on a nice motorcycle ride. Their future plans include purchasing a new home, traveling to Italy and Peter starting his own insurance business. Beyond that, says Peter, they just look forward to “enjoying each day that we are gifted to have each other, side by side.”

Eliminate Expired Items

Easy First Steps

Decluttering can sometimes seem daunting. It can be hard to figure out how/where to begin. “Start somewhere — there’s really no wrong place to start,” says Erin Covolesky, owner of Amplo Organizing in Leesport. “Bring up a trash bag, bring up a box or two for donations.” Covolesky recommends picking a room and working left to right or focusing on individual categories like clothing.

44 JANUARY 2026 | BERKSCOUNTYLIVING.COM

If smaller projects are more your jam, “start with a very small area — just one shelf instead of a whole closet, for example,” suggests Aimee Hafer, marketing & special events manager atHabitat for Humanity of Berks County. “Making small, attainable goals is a great way to build momentum and stay motivated.” To keep the process manageable, she recommends working in 15- to 20-minute chunks.

Lighten up your lifestyle by tossing or donating a few things. Start with worn out or expired items, then move on to things someone else might love but don’t fit your vibe. Check out these ideas along with advice from local experts and begin to make room in your home.

“Do the low-hanging fruit first and move on to the more difficult items,” advises Vali G. Heist, certified professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Crew in Mohnton. Expired food and medications are on Heist’s top 10 list of items to purge, and they’re a great place to start since you can use the printed dates to make your decision. As you examine pantry items, toss the expired food and place items with close dates at the front of your closet or cupboards so you can use them before they expire. With medicines, be sure to dispose of them properly. Pharmacies often offer drug take-back programs. In addition, many medications can be trashed by mixing them with coffee grounds or cat litter.

2 | Lose Unloved Linens

The recent round of holidays often means guests, so January’s a perfect time to reassess bedding and towels that were used during their stay. If your linen closet is bursting with items, get rid of any frayed or stained towels/sheets. If there are any blankets that you don’t find cozy, ditch them for a fast way to make a lot of space. Take a look at the numbers of beds in your home vs. various sheet sets. One set on the bed plus a backup is always a good rule of thumb — and possibly a special variety (like warm flannel sheets for the winter). However, if you have way too many sets of one type, keep only your favorites. Use the unwanted linens for rags and cleanup around your house or donate them to animal shelters like the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.

A packed closet can become a daily source of stress when you’re trying to get ready in the morning. Using concrete criteria can help streamline this decision process. “Anything obviously ripped or stained, get rid of it,” advises Covolesky. “Things that don’t fit, that you don’t care for, are easy donates. Things that you haven’t worn in the last year or longer are usually items that you could get rid of.”

4 | Curate Craft Supplies

2

Winter is a great time to revisit a favorite hobby or try something new. It’s also a great time to sort through your crafting materials and art supplies, notes Heist. Once again, start with the obvious discards like dried-up glue, paint, pens or markers. These can be recycled at Staples. You can even recruit your kids to help identify these items by testing them on a piece of scrap paper. If you’ve changed your mind about a particular hobby, don’t stress. Libraries and schools often have a need for supplies like yarn, paper and more. Leftover bits of fabric or yarn from finished projects are good candidates to add to this donation stash. These supplies can bring joy to someone else, and donating them can give you room to move on to something more personally fulfilling.

Revisit Holiday Décor

“When I start purging each year, my top categories are holiday décor, gifted items and kitchen items,” says Hafer. Let’s break those categories down. First, when you’re packing up your holiday decorations, take a look at what’s still in the bins and boxes. Take out any items you don’t love, or ones that are broken and can’t be repaired, and set them aside for donation/trash. Heist recommends trimming down the amount of gift wrap, bows, ribbon and gift bags. Toss anything that’s too crumpled.

While you’re considering e-waste, Heist also suggests looking through your electronics cords. Worn-out light strings from your holiday lights and cords/cables from long-gone electronic items are easy choices to ditch. Heist likes to take any e-waste to the Berks County Recycling Center in Leesport. Local Goodwill donation centers, Staples and Best Buy also have programs to make it easy to get rid of these items.

9 | Move Out Unwanted Media

Streaming content makes it super easy to access a lot of music, movies and TV with the press of a button. If you find yourself with a lot of CDs and DVDs that are sitting unused, this can be a perfect time to downsize and keep only your favorites or items that aren’t readily available via streaming. Libraries often take these donations, or you could try selling your items to a store like Young Ones in Kutztown or Vertigo Music in West Reading.

When you’re looking to declutter, books can be a fraught category. However, if you’re lacking shelf space for some much-loved reads, it might be time to get rid of a few titles. Heist recommends eliminating books that you don’t plan to reread. Books that were bought on a whim and you don’t plan to ever start are also good candidates as well as items with specialized info that’s long outdated. Fortunately, books have many options for donation. Many Berks County library branches have used book sales throughout the year, and stores like Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown also accept donations.

Get a Gift Upgrade

Since the holiday season often means an influx of new items, Hafer likes to do a quick inventory and compare her gifts with similar items already in her home. “I try to figure out if it replaces or is an upgrade to something that I already had,” she explains. “That makes it easy to let go of the old item and enjoy the new item guilt-free.”

Ditch Kitchen Duplicates

In the kitchen, look for duplicate tools. If you find yourself with an overflow of spatulas, weed out any that are ripped, damaged or those that continually get passed over (like ones with detachable heads that can get lost in whatever you’re mixing). Heist is a fan of ditching seldom-used appliances and single-use kitchen gadgets. These items often take up valuable drawer and counter space. In addition, if you have duplicates of any small appliances, keep your favorite. If what’s left is in good shape, donate it. Otherwise, place it in a box with other electronic items that need to be recycled.

Sometimes decluttering is easier said than done. Make sure you give yourself time and space to gradually work on these skills. “Decluttering, or as I like to call it, rightsizing, isn’t a once-anddone process,” Heist advises. “It will probably take more than one pass through the rooms in your home to let go of what you no longer need.” Covolesky also recommends taking a realistic approach. “Our lives are not perfection,” she notes. “I think we really need to be honest with ourselves and create schedules for decluttering spaces and solutions for ourselves that we know we can live with and that we know we will stick to.” While you’re sorting, thinking about possible recipients for items can help if you feel stuck. “It’s easier to let go when you know the item will be appreciated and have a good home,” Hafer explains. “Whether you drop off items yourself or schedule a free donation pickup, donating to ReStore Berks is a win-win — you clear your space, keep usable items out of landfills and support Habitat for Humanity of Berks County’s mission to build affordable homes right here in our community.”

WEST READING MOTOR CLUB Preserving the past — especially the old-but-still-gorgeous buildings and their unique ambiance — seems to be in Berks County blood. The brick building called West Reading Motor Club in West Reading is a 1913-era visual throwback to the glory days of elegant old cars, and its revival is definitely forward-facing when it comes to enticing drinks and delicious food.

Specialty cocktails here are playfully named to honor the theme of high riding, starting with a “New Fashioned” created with Maker’s Mark plus orange and cherry syrup, walnut bitters and topped with a brûléed orange wheel. This beverage is smooth going down and utterly satisfying to gaze upon with its rich gold-and-woody tints. Many more amusingly titled cocktails to try include the High Planes Drifter made with Fords Gin; Catalytic Converter made with Mount Gay Rum and Grand Marnier; the Oil Change, featuring Kentucky-inspired Bulleit Bourbon and blackberry syrup; and a citrusforward Sugar in the Gas Tank with Tito’s, triple sec and limoncello. Fine wines by the glass or bottle are always available while beers on the list are exceedingly well chosen, including the locally popular Yuengling Flight.

Fried Brie, Butternut Squash Arancini & Other Starters Chef Mike’s brilliant version of Brie as an appetizer is ridiculously tasty and uniquely complex in construction and presentation. Chef treats the cheese like a blessed, “meaty” gem, covering it with a nutty almond and panko crust, so when you cut into it, warm layers ooze out from the center. Chipotle and dark Luxardo cherry chutney plus spicy little mini microgreens lounging on the edge of the plate combine to deliver sweet heat with an overall umami flair; this all spreads easily on perfectly sized toasted crostini. Finger-licking good! This one’s a seriously popular starter amongst patrons for good reasons: it’s elegant, toasty, intensely countryearthy in appeal — the kind of food creation that lingers lovingly in food memory banks. The French Onion Soup is practically a meal in itself, richly pungent with House Made Bourbon French Onion broth. Butternut Squash Arancini is also popular along with Prince Edward Island Mussels and Filet Crostini. The latter option makes the most of marinated filet tips with its beet and squash puree, pickled red onions and balsamic glaze.

Braised Short Rib

Speaking of Filet…

It would be hard to find a better filet mignon: this 8-ounce entrée is right up there with the best of fine dining establishments anywhere. The meat is seasoned with deep care, flame-flavored, cuts with a fork and melts like butter in the mouth. It’s finished with a delectable rosemary demi-glace. The roasted garlic mashed potatoes are smooth and fluffy with peaks; the mellow garlic flavor gently melds like lava into every forkful. Tender Brussels sprouts provide a counterbalance from the garden. Or, if corn is your preference, fresh and buttery, just-crunchy corn kernels cut from the cob serve as a lovely side. Airline Chicken Marsala lifts white meat to new heights as juicy planks of chicken are served across a wonderfully creamy, cheesy, garlicParmesan risotto that’s slightly sweet. The meat cuts easily, and the portions are plentiful (expect to take home some leftovers), but there’s also a luscious, peppery surprise tucked here and there — roasted bits of skin to please folks who adore that sort of taste. Slices of mushrooms in the sauce subtly impart signature depth to the gentle brown marsala blanket. Chef Mike truly does the bird justice with this entrée, adding nicely charred, thin stalks of bright green broccolini as a side.

VA RIE T Y G A L ORE It’s important to note that in a building of this square footage, there are two floors in the West Reading Motor Club for dining. The featured descriptions relate to First Floor Menu items, while the Second Floor Menu has a full array of its own options, including salads, burgers and more.

Seafood Risotto & Other Fishy Lures

WRMC’s Seafood Risotto is “always popular,” according to one knowledgeable server. The sheer range of surf in this entrée brings patrons back for more, again and again, since it contains pretty much everything needed to transport the mind to an ocean shore. Scallops, lobster, shrimp, jumbo lump crab meat and mussels enjoy a sherry cream sauce combined with shallots and tomato, Parmesan cheese and sweet corn. This feast allows each special element to be fully experienced in aroma and texture. Other favorite offerings are Chef’s amazing Pan-seared Scallops and salmon dishes; both items tend to remain on the menu regardless

of the season. Naturally, the menu is subject to yummy updates and dynamic changes. For vegetarians, the Udon Noodle Stir Fry is a stunning option as the thick Japanese pasta is marinated and combined with an array of veggies: carrots, Brussels sprouts, wild mushrooms, charred sweet peppers, asparagus and scallions. For dessert, many options exist! But don’t miss a chance to finish dinner in a classy way: WRMC’s Homestyle Cheesecake with Strawberries (fresh-sliced) on a sweet graham cracker crust.
