Northampton Area High School Makes return to live theatre with Neil Simon’s ‘Fools’

By LAUREN SCHUSTER On November 19 and 20, Northampton Area High School’s drama club put on their performance of Neil Simon’s comedy “Fools.” One of Simon’s lesserknown plays, “Fools” tells the story of the remote Ukrainian village of Kulyenchikov, whose residents

Northampton Borough Council Discusses vacant seat, holiday events

By CHRISTINA SANTO The Northampton Borough Council met on Thursday, Nov. 18 to discuss the first ward vacancy on council, the 2022 budget, and upcoming holiday events. Council has 30 days, or until Nov. 25, to appoint someone to fill the vacancy created as a result of Keith Piescienski’s passing on Oct. 26, according to solicitor Brian Panella. If someone is not appointed by then, the election council would have 15 additional

days (until Dec. 10) to appoint a candidate; the election council consists of borough council minus the mayor, but with the addition of an elector. With the absence of two councilmembers, council elected to take no action on appointing a replacement. The matter will be discussed at the next council meeting, and advertised as a special meeting of the election council. However, applicants Barry

Frantz, Sandra Pudliner and Judy Haldeman introduced themselves and answered questions regarding the position. Whoever is appointed to the seat will serve for the remaining two years of Piescienski’s term. Next, at the recommendation of Police Chief Bryan Kadingo, council approved two motions to take no action on installing stop signs at two intersections: 11th and Universal and Ninth and Continued on page 19

SBS timeline

2010- Digging out from recession American Express — following the 2008 market crash — launches Small Business Saturday® to encourage people to “shop small” and bring more dollars to small entrepreneurs. 2011- Help from the feds The U.S. Senate unanimously passes a resolution in support of the day and officials in all 50 states participate. 2013- Neighbors helping neighbors More than 1,400 individuals and organizations sign up as “Neighborhood Champions” to rally their communities with events and activities on Small Business Saturday. 2018- Record spending U.S. consumers report spending around $17 billion at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday.

SBS statistics

99.7% of all U.S. businesses are small businesses When we think of small businesses, our minds might automatically wander to the momand-pop shop on the corner of the block, but what about the ever-famous-ever-growing Silicon Valley? A large amount of small businesses within the United States are startups and tech-based, popping up in California, New York, and everywhere in between. 64% of new jobs created in the U.S. between 1993 and 2011 were from small businesses. A business can’t run without the people keeping it afloat, and with all of the new startups being created almost every day, it’s no wonder small businesses account for employing the most people in the United States. The inception of each new business creates a bunch of new jobs along with it, needing someone with the appropriate skills to fill the position. So when you support small businesses, you support the many people helping to keep it running. Small businesses donate 250% more to nonprofits and commu-

nity causes. Small businesses have a personal connection to their community, as their companies are usually supported by the locals surrounding them. Donating to charity allows them to give back to the community that gives to them, as well as getting some philanthropy points and spreading awareness of their business’s existence and values.

discounts — but without the marketing dollars to display the price cuts, they're often left out in the cold. If you were planning on purchasing a TV this holiday season, try calling your local electronics store to see if they're offering any discounts first. Talk About It Social media is a wonderful way to share our daily lives with friends, but sometimes, letting them know about a good deal from an e-commerce giant or a big box store can feel like advertising. With small businesses, it's different: Instead of contributing to some corporation's bottom line, you can rest easy knowing that you're helping a neighbor succeed. Make It A Habit Small Business Saturday only lasts for one day, but you're now acquainted with your local shops. Don't let another year pass before your next visit. For small businesses to succeed, they need our support through the year.

5 ways to Help small Businesses Recover from The pandemic

slowly transition out of the pandemic. Here are five of their tips: 1. Change Your Mindset Put small, local businesses at the forefront of your mind — and your shopping list. Although large retailers like Amazon or Walmart offer speed and convenience, ask yourself, “Can I purchase this from a small business instead?” Patrick Connelly, cofounder of Stellar Villa, said in an email.

www.apnews.com When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, communities around the U.S. rallied to help small businesses by launching “shop local” initiatives, purchasing gift cards and starting fundraising campaigns. Now that states have begun to roll back social distancing restrictions and vaccination rates continue to climb, small businesses still need continued support. “When we shop local, the statistics have shown us that more money is put into your community, which you then benefit from,” says Ash Cintas, founder of City Shoppe, an e-commerce platform serving local retailers and products in multiple cities. Every dollar that’s spent locally helps businesses get through this challenging time so that we keep our communities and the character of our cities, she says. We talked to small-business owners to find out how consumers can best support them as they

people to come and shop, and at least where I live in Rhode Island, they’re still taking a lot of precautions to make sure that consumers feel safe.” Luke recommends searching online or local community publications to see if there are business directories in your area that highlight small businesses to support. A city’s chamber of commerce website may have a list of small businesses , or you can check sites like Tripadvisor or Yelp. 3. Tell A Friend Don’t underestimate the power of word-of-mouth marketing. Tell your friends, family members and co-workers about your favorite small and local businesses — and suggest that they do the same. “Small businesses are at a distinct disadvantage to being found online compared to their larger counterparts,” JB Manning, owner of Wimberley Puzzle Company in Wimberley, Texas, said in an email. “Telling our friends, neighbors and social media world about great products with excellent service will be not only the key to success for small-business recovery but future growth as well,” Manning said. 4. Get Digital Instead of just following your favorite small businesses online, share them with your own followers. If you have a particularly enjoyable visit or purchase, create a post and be sure to tag the business. Subscribe to newsletters, attend virtual events or workshops, add local products to gift registries and write reviews. “If you love what we make or had a great experience with our team, share it,” Zox CEO Jason Kuipers said via email. Kuipers and his brothers have been selling collectible wristbands in Los Angeles since 2011. “In a time where many people only bother to leave a review if they’re upset, letting others know when you’ve found a company that goes above and beyond helps more than you could ever realize — it’s how even small brands end up with a big following,” he said. 5. Think Creatively If a shop near you is struggling, consider launching a fundraising campaign, volunteering to set up a booth or sell goods at a flea or farmers market, donating your professional skills or helping to organize an event in support of small businesses in your area.

Avani Modi Sarkar, co-founder of Modi Toys in Edison, New Jersey, recommends supporting local businesses in small-business grant competitions. “I have entered a couple of grant competitions where finalists were selected based on the number of votes they garnered from their supporters. This is the easiest way to support a small business since it doesn’t cost a dime,” Sarkar said via email. When in doubt, talk to local small-business owners about what they need and where you can help. And remember, the pandemic has been a tough time for small businesses and consumers alike, so a little kindness and compassion can make a real difference.

Small Business Statistics and Facts for 2021

Websitebuilder.org The United States is known for its opportunities, especially for entrepreneurs. According to CNBC’s US World & News Report, recent small business statistics rank the US as the third-best country for starting and running a business. But what’s the US economy really like for small businesses? How much of an impact do these businesses make? How many of them fail, and how many actually survive? Below, we’ve gathered some useful and current data to give you a clearer perspective on the state of American small busi-

nesses. There are 31.7 billion small businesses in the United States. Small businesses provide work for 47.3% of the American workforce. The coronavirus pandemic has significantly impacted small businesses. 57% of small business owners rely on personal savings to start off. Startup statistics show that the most valuable startups are located in the United States and China. 20% of small businesses fail in their first year. Around 43.7% of small businesses in the US were temporarily closed because of Covid-19. Poor cash flow is responsible for as much as 82% of all small business failures. Social media ad spending is projected to reach $110,628 million in 2021. 40% of consumers value free WiFi in a small business establishment. Job openings at firms with less than 500 employees were responsible for 40% of new jobs from 1992 through 2012. In 2017, 42% of small businesses had a payroll of less than $100,000. 46% of small businesses have one to five full-time or part-time employees. 75.3% of employers in the private sector were microbusinesses in 2013. Only 5% of small business firms hire union workers. The average lifespan of a small business is 8 ½ years. 57% of small business owners rely on personal savings as their top source of capital when starting a business. Only 3% use their home equity, and 8% actually take out a bank loan. Business credit cards are the least-used method, with only 2% of businesses using them, while 6% use other options. 240,000 small business owners were rejected from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) in August 2020. New business statistics show that over 200,000 small business

owners were flagged on the first release of PPP last year due to many reasons, from clerical errors to more significant wrongdoings. Fortunately, the SBA opened the program again on Jan. 11, 2021, and has so far approved 60,000 out of the 240,000 initially rejected borrowers. The pandemic forced 35% of small business owners to use their personal savings to stay afloat. Over half of the small businesses didn’t use any type of financing in 2017.

NAZARETH AREA Celebrate A Moravian Christmas Tradition Submitted by

AUBREY BARANOWSKI The Moravian Historical Society is pleased to announce the opening of our annual putz display, held on Saturday, November 27 from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. This free exhibition celebrates A Moravian Christmas: 100 Years of Tradition. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the annual putz display in the historic 1740 Gray Cottage, the oldest Moravian structure in North America. An elaborate miniature display that tells the Christmas story, the Moravian putz tradition reaches back into the eighteenth century. This exhibition features objects from the 1850s Morris putz and the 20th century Sullivan putz,

accompanied by lights and narration of the Nativity story. Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy a festive display of Robert Wendler’s historic Lehigh Valley building models. For more than two decades, Wendler preserved Lehigh Valley history in the form of his miniature buildings. Painstakingly detailed, these miniature masterpieces were created using only basswood, paint, sharp knives, and tiny drills to create each shingle, window, and post one at a time. At the height of his productivity during the 1970s, Wendler produced three to four buildings a month. The display will feature some of the most iconic historic structures from the Lehigh Valley. The exhibition will be on display daily from 1 to 4 p.m. November 28–Jan. 9, 2022. For November 27 only, the putz will be open at 11 a.m. during Small Business Saturday. The Moravian Historical Society is closed on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1.

Founded in 1857, the Moravian Historical Society (MHS) preserves, interprets, and celebrates the rich culture of the Moravians. Located in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, MHS maintains the 1740– 1743 Whitefield House and the 1740 Gray Cottage, the oldest surviving Moravian structure in North America. Recognized widely for its significant collection, the museum offers permanent and changing exhibitions and a store that features gifts, books, and handmade artisan items.

SoldOut show Benefits Memorial Library of Nazareth And Vicinity Submitted by JILL SILVIUS

On the evening of Friday, November 19, a sold-out crowd enjoyed a 90-minute rock/blues/ folk concert at the Phoenix banquet facility in Nazareth to benefit the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity. After a warm welcome by Nazareth Borough Councilman Christopher D. Crook and introduction by mistress of ceremonies Barbara Dietterich, Dick Boak opened the concert on autoharp while accompanied by guitarist/ vocalist Craig Thatcher. Folk musician Dave Fry performed several songs, including crowd favorites “Don't Call Me Early” and “Giants,” which invited the audience to participate. Fry and Thatcher then played “Lessons From Pete” before Thatcher and keyboardist Cliff Starkey performed. Finally, all four musicians joined for the evening's final three songs, including “We Are Welcomed,” which received a standing ovation. Attendees were also invited to benefit the library by purchasing tickets for a 50/50 raffle, as well as a holiday basket raffle that will continue through Christmas in Nazareth on December 11. Everyone is invited to the library at 295 E. Center St. to view the baskets and bid. The library expresses its thanks to the Phoenix, the musicians and the attendees for their support and a wonderful evening.

of winter’s wonders. You can expect to hike about four miles. Registration is required. Torpor, Brumation, and Hibernation Hike Saturday, December 11 from 2 to 3 p.m. From bears to frogs, many of Pennsylvania’s wildlife species spend the winter in some form of hibernation. How they hibernate, and for how long, depends on the

species and their habitat. During this program, we will maintain a warm body temperature while hiking to discuss the ways in which wildlife conserve energy during the winter months and learn of different physiological changes animals must undergo to survive the harsh winter conditions. Registration is required. Basic Boating Course Saturday, December 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The PA Fish & Boat Commission’s PA Basic Boating Course was developed to supply boaters with practical information so they can make better informed decisions on the water. Instructors provide students with information to help them reduce the risk of injury and conflict on the water. Students who successfully complete this course may apply for a Boating Safety Education Certificate issued by the Commission. This course will be held indoors. Registration is required. For questions call Andy Desko at 215-968-3631. You can view and register for community programs online at https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/ search/events?order=date&sear ch=jacobsburg. If you need accommodation to participate in a program please contact the park office at 610-746-2801 or jacobsburgsp@pa.gov. Interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for educational programs with at least five days notice.

he must find a way to break the curse, even if it means being unable to save himself, but discovers after 24 hours that he is still the same. Deciding that the curse only works on those who allow it to, Leon devises a plan to fool the townspeople into believing that the curse has been broken. He learns that the people of Kulyenchikov believe the curse could be broken if Sophia marries a descendant of Vladmir Yousekevitch, who placed the curse on the town after his son’s heart was broken by the Zubritskys’ ancestor, also named Sophia. Leon tells the townspeople that a letter he receives contains news of a long-lost relative, also named Yousekevitch, meaning that the curse would be broken if he married Sophia. Though the details in the letter are made up, Leon and Sophia are married, and the townspeople go on to live happy lives free of the curse. Also starring in the production were Eliza Doll as Lenya Zubrtisky and Max Euculano as Dr. Zubritsky. The two proved a dynamic duo as parents to the clueless but beautiful Sophia. Comic relief also came from Kulyenchikov’s other villagers and shopkeepers, including Snetsky the absentminded shepherd (Sophia Davidick), Yenchna the flower and fish vendor (Evelyn Raub), Mishkin the postman (Azelia Dos-Santos), and Slovitch the butcher (Annabel Pyne). Will McMahon and Michael Seidick rounded out the cast of colorful characters as Gregor Yousekevitch and the Magistrate, respectively. Director Gianna Neal was eager to make a return to live the-

atre with this production, and felt that “something fun and upbeat” would be a good choice for a fresh start after previous productions were cancelled in the wake of COVID-19. Neal did express that she wished she had not lost out on so much time with previous students whose shows were cut short by the pandemic, but praised the cast for their enthusiasm and dedication, which she said made the rehearsal process one of the smoothest she’s seen. “I think they were just so excited to do a show,” she had said, reflecting a similar sentiment towards the ability to stage live productions again.
