interesting topics. For one, the beauty and science of snowflakes. There is a scientific reason why each snowflake is unique and also symmetrical. Be sure and find our article “The Beauty and Science of Snowflakes” to learn more. We do have one non-holiday article that is also very interesting. Specifically, there are some big changes coming to the practice of remote work. Many bosses – in large companies and small – want employees back in the office. You may have seen that the truly large tech companies have been pursuing this goal in 2025, but now it’s trickling Continued on page 4

“Yes, Virginia…” SOURCE: kxrb.com (edited)
The most famous Christmas editorial ever published in a newspaper – the New York Sun – might be titled “Yes, Virginia…” Maybe you’ve heard of it. It’s the story of how eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon had been told by friends that Santa Claus wasn't real. Her dad told her to ask her newspaper, the New York Sun, if that was so. Her dad said if the Sun said it was so, then it was so. Virginia sent the following letter to the paper: “Dear Editor I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O'Hanlon” On September 21, 1897 the Sun answered the eight-year-old's question, replying: “Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not
comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him... Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! Continued on page 8

“Yes, Virginia…” Continued from page 6
It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest

men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.” In Conclusion Virginia O'Hanlon lived to the age of 81, passing away in 1971. She probably believed in Santa Claus her entire life. Why? Because The Sun said it was so. Merry Christmas!

A Wellness Reset for the New Year SOURCE: bossbabechroniclesblog.com (edited)
Coming up on the start of a New Year is a great time – the logical time – to think about and commit to a “reset” in one’s life. We often think of a fitness reset, but in this article we look at more, we take it further. Because from burnout to balance, there are multiple areas in life where we can take action to create a wellness reset for the New Year. The Mental Reset After a busy year our minds can feel cluttered and tired. A mental reset allows us to reflect, process, and recalibrate. Here are some tips on how to do it: Reflect on the Year / Take some quiet time to think about the past 12 months. What were your biggest accomplishments, challenges and lessons learned? Write those things down for clarity on where you’ve been and where you’re heading.
Declutter Your Commitments / Life can get busy and not everything on your plate is necessary or fulfilling. List current responsibilities, and ask: Which bring me joy or purpose? Let go of obligations that don’t align with your priorities. Practice Gratitude / Gratitude helps you focus on abundance rather than lack of. Start a gratitude journal or list five things you’re thankful for each day leading up to the New Year. Set Clear Intentions / Rather than strict resolutions, set intentions to guide your mindset and actions, such as “I will embrace growth” or “I will prioritize meaningful connections.” Let these anchor your year ahead. The Physical Reset A physical reset isn’t just about your body, but also about the spaces you inhabit. Deep Clean Your Space / A tidy space can create a sense of calm and control, and is a clean canvas for whatever the New Year will bring you. Declutter your home, donate items you no longer need, and deep-clean areas you’ve neglected. Reset Your Sleep Schedule / The holidays can throw off your sleep. Commit to going to bed and waking Continued on page 10

up at consistent times to recalibrate your body clock. Revisit Your Fitness Routine / Physical movement is essential for mental and emotional health. If your current fitness routine feels stale, switch things up with a new workout class, nature walks, or setting a manageable goal like stretching daily. Hydrate and Nourish / After indulgent holiday meals, focus on nourishing your body with wholesome, nutrient-rich foods. Increase your water intake and consider a week of lighter meals packed with vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to reset your system. The Digital Reset Our digital spaces often mirror the chaos of our lives. A digital reset helps you create an online environment that’s clean, organized, and inspiring. Organize Your Files / Go through your devices and delete unnecessary apps, duplicate files, and unused photos. Create folders for important documents and back everything up to the cloud or an external drive.
Clean Up Your Inbox / Inbox clutter can feel overwhelming. Set aside time to unsubscribe from newsletters you never read, delete old emails, and organize the rest into labeled folders. Audit Your Social Media / Social media should add value to your life, not drain it. Unfollow accounts that don’t inspire or uplift you and consider taking a break from platforms that feel overwhelming. Refresh Your Digital Tools / Download apps that support your goals. Clear out clutter for what truly serves you.
Merry Christmas

Remote Work Changes in 2026 SOURCE: Various
After several years of flexible schedules and home offices, many companies are reconsidering the future of remote work. There are multiple reasons behind this, including: Innovation: Many business leaders believe that in-office work leads to better ideas as a result of brainstorming and team synergy. Expensive real estate: Some companies own or lease pricey office space, so pushing for RTO appears less wasteful and justifies the cost of owning/renting all those offices. Employee accountability and visibility: Some leaders and managers still equate in-office presence with productivity. The data doesn’t necessarily support it, but the truth is, some of the executives are leaning toward micromanagement. Training and mentorship: This is a fair point, as in-person sessions are more effective when it comes to knowledge transfer and hands-on training.
Junior workers benefit from simply being around their more experienced colleagues. Company culture: A sense of togetherness and belonging, as well as sharing common values, is one of the benefits of company culture, especially for newly on-boarded employees. It’s an element that is missing in the case of remote teams. Recent Surveys According to a recent survey conducted by Resume Builder, nearly 30% of U.S. companies plan to fully eliminate remote work by 2026, requiring employees to return to the office five days a week. The survey found that 28% of companies already had full-time office requirements in 2025, while another 28% use three-day hybrid schedules. In 2026, five-day office mandates are expected to rise to 30%, while three-day hybrid models drop to 25%. This shift mirrors a broader trend among corporate and tech giants that have rolled back flexible work policies over the past year. Employers Want Workers Back Many leaders cite cultural and productivity concerns as the main drivers behind their returnto-office mandates, equating visibility with productivity and fearing the loss of culture and collaboration. For executives, in-person attendance

still represents engagement and teamwork. Even so, most executives say they prefer some form of hybrid model. When asked about the ideal balance, 27% of respondents said three days a week in the office, while 19% chose two days, and 13% favored four. Only 16% of respondents believed employees should work in-office full time. One reason companies are increasing in-office requirements is to make better use of office space, which in many cases has been significantly
underutilized since the shift to remote work. Eight percent of executives admit that stricter attendance policies are designed to encourage turnover. On the other hand, companies that reduced in-office days said their primary goals were boosting employee happiness, wellbeing, and retention.
What Comes Next The remote-work experiment that began in 2020 isn’t ending it’s entering a new phase. In the end, the next chapter of work will be written by leaders who balance structure with trust, and design workplaces that value both presence and purpose. In regards to all of this, one tech leader at the forefront of the call back to the office has noted, “2026 is going to be tough.”

that characteristic six-fold symmetry we are all familiar with. A snowflake, on the other hand, is a more general term. It can mean an individual snow crystal, but it can also mean just about anything that falls from the winter clouds. Often hundreds or even thousands of snow crystals collide and stick together in mid-air as they fall forming flimsy puff-balls we call snowflakes. Probably the most commonly asked question is why are no two snowflakes exactly alike? That’s because individual snowflakes all follow slightly different paths from the sky to the ground, each encountering slightly different atmospheric conditions along the way, which shape the formation of the snowflake. Due to their different paths they all tend to look unique, resembling everything from prisms to the familiar lacy pattern. The Classic Snowflake The “classic” snowflake is a six-sided crystal, but with changes in humidity and temperature these shapes all differ. The uniqueness of snowflakes comes in part from environmental factors during their formations (e.g., collisions, etc.), as well as the high number of possible formations crystals can make.
Sometimes the flakes can form in columns, thin needles, or a flat shape called plates. While scientists have learned a lot about snowflakes, even they don’t know exactly why some of these shapes occur when they do in the snowflake’s “journey” to the ground. The “Science” of Snowflakes There is a “science” behind the formation of snowflakes. A snowflake begins to form when an extremely cold water droplet freezes onto a pollen or dust particle in the sky. This creates an ice Continued on page 22

crystal. As the ice crystal falls to the ground, water vapor freezes onto the primary crystal, building new crystals, which become the six arms of the snowflake. The ice crystals that make up snowflakes are symmetrical (or patterned) because they reflect the internal order of the crystal’s water molecules as they arrange themselves in predetermined spaces (known as “crystallization”) to form a sixsided snowflake. Ultimately, it is the temperature at which a crystal forms – and to a lesser extent the humidity of the air – that determines the basic shape of the ice crystal. The intricate shape of a single arm of a snowflake is determined by the atmospheric conditions experienced by the entire ice crystal as it falls. In essence, snowflake beauty is a blend of scientific wonder, artistic complexity, and symbolic purity, best appreciated by observing these transient wonders closely.

Before anyone rushes to wrap a bow around a puppy this Christmas, it’s worth pausing for a gentle reality check. Dogs are pure joy, but they’re also a long-term responsibility, not just a holiday moment. Every year, well-meaning folks take home adorable puppies for the season, only to realize later that the timing, lifestyle, or commitment just isn’t right, and those animals end up in shelters again. So if you’re thinking about adding a four-legged friend to the family, start by visiting local rescues and adoption centers. There are so many wonderful dogs already waiting for a loving home, and choosing adoption can turn a hopeful tail-wag into a lifelong happy ending.
Give Back! Now collecting and continuing to Christmas, The Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette will be collecting for pets in need. Our address is 255E South Best Ave., Walnutport and items can be dropped off between 9am and 4pm Monday thru Friday.
Examples of items to bring: Laundry pods or detergent Bleach • Paper towels Iams cat food hairball All brown dry dog food Printer paper • Note pads Purina one brown puppy food Gift cards (Chewy, Walmart, Amazon)

Rescue a Friend Jasper
Whitehall • Shih Tzu Senior (8+ years) • Male Small (0-25 lbs) • Coat: Curly White / Cream, Gray / Blue / Silver House-trained: Yes Health: Spayed/Neutered: Yes Jasper’s Compatibility: kids - Yes / dogs - Yes Say hello to Jasper, a sweet almost-13-year-old Shih Tzu who weighs about 15 lbs (and could use a little help filling out). He was surrendered through no fault of his own, and now he’s hoping to spend his golden years in a calm, loving home. Jasper is a gentle little guy who loves kids and enjoys the company of small dogs, though big dogs can be a bit scary for him. He can be cat tested if you have feline friends at home. He walks beautifully on leash and is as polite and soft-natured as they come. Like many seniors, he has a few quirks: he’s anxious in the car and not a big fan of nail trims. He’ll also need regular bloodwork to keep him feeling his best as he ages. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion who just wants a safe place to rest his head, let Jasper show you how wonderful senior dogs truly are. Apply at lvpeaceablekingdom.info. Peaceable Kingdom, PA Kennel License #04131, 1049 MacArthur Rd., Whitehall, PA 18052. If you've submitted an inquiry, Peaceable Kingdom will review your information and may ask you to fill out an official application. If you're a good fit for Jasper, they'll reach out to set up a meeting. What if I have more questions about the adoption process? Just reach out directly to Peaceable Kingdom, and they'll be happy to help! Do Not Let These Holiday Pet Hazards Ruin Your Holidays 1. Food Risks Holiday dishes are tempting, but your pet’s diet should stay the same. Fatty, sweet or spicy foods, alcohol, and turkey or chicken bones can be dangerous. A small piece of plain boneless turkey is an acceptable treat, but it is best to avoid anything that might contain unsafe ingredients. Check our full list of hazardous foods for more details. 2. Beware of Wires Festive decorations often mean more cords and batteries. If your pet swallows a battery go to the vet immediately. Pets can receive dangerous electric shocks from wires, and damaged batteries can cause burns to the mouth or throat. 3. Problem Plants Mistletoe and holly can cause stomach upset and heart problems if swallowed. Many lilies found in holiday bouquets are extremely toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure. Poinsettias can lead to mild or moderate stomach irritation. Keep
BLUE MOUNTAIN EVERGREEN INC
plants out of reach or choose artificial options. For more information, see our complete list of poisonous plants. 4. Christmas Tree Safety Trees can create several risks for pets. Be sure the tree is secured so it cannot fall. Cover or block access to the tree water, which can contain bacteria that cause nausea or diarrhea. Keep wrapped food or candy off the floor, since pets can smell what you cannot see. Avoid using tinsel. Swallowing tinsel can cause vomiting, intestinal blockage, dehydration, and may require surgery. Choose lights and ornaments instead.

5. Candle Care Whether lighting a menorah or enjoying scent candles, never leave them unattended. Curious paws or wagging tails can knock them over and cause burns or fires. 6. Noise Sensitivity Loud music, fireworks, poppers, and noisemakers can frighten pets. Provide a quiet room where they can retreat if needed. 7. Trash Trouble Pets quickly learn where to find leftovers and broken items. Take out garbage or keep lids tightly closed to prevent access to food scraps or hazardous materials. 8. Snow Globes Snow globes contain ethylene glycol, the same toxic chemical found in antifreeze. If a globe breaks, the sweet scent may attract pets. Keep snow globes out of reach and clean up any spills immediately. 9. Salt Concerns Ice melt and salt dough ornaments can be appealing but may cause dangerous electrolyte imbalances. Choose pet safe ice melt products.
10. Medication Safety Store medications securely and out of reach of pets. Remind guests to keep their medicines in closed cabinets rather than leaving them in bags or suitcases. We wish you and your pets a safe and joyful holiday season. If you believe your pet has been exposed to any toxic substance, contact your veterinarian or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222

Making Healthy Goals for 2026
SOURCE: Various
With the new year often comes a focus on health. Many of us have made New Year’s resolutions to get healthy and lose weight, but without a road map, these resolutions often fall by the wayside. This year make your resolutions stick by developing
a plan that will help you achieve goals. Step 1: Know your starting point There are many factors involved in one’s overall health and well-being. Age, family health history, weight and fitness level all affect your health goals and the length of time it will take to achieve them.

A good starting point when setting a health or weight-loss goal is an assessment of your current health and the habits and behaviors that are standing in your way. Ask yourself thought provoking questions and write down your answers. What are a few behaviors that come to mind? For some it may be skipping meals all day only to come home overly hungry and eating a large meal before bed. Allow yourself to have an open mind and limit judging yourself or feeling guilty. Step 2: Set goals After you have a good grasp of your current health, you should define your goals based on the areas you’d like to focus on. This could be weight loss, eating better/clean eating, exercise and fitness, life balance, or a combination. Before setting lofty health goals, it’s important to do a little research and learn what’s realistic for you and the steps you need to take to get there. Goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound. Step 3: Create a road map for change Now that you have identified your goals and the behaviors keeping you from achieving them, Continued on page 46

pick one or two behaviors to focus on that will make the greatest impact. What is causing your behavior, how is it making you feel, and so forth Once you understand what is causing the behavior it will be easier to make a change. Also, consider what you could replace the behavior with if needed. For example, say you skip meals during the day. What behavior is causing you to skip meals? Is it due to lack of planning ahead, waking up too late or not having food options available? Steps to change this behavior may include making a grocery list and scheduling time to grocery shop, having prepackaged grab-and-go options available, or scheduling meal and snack times on your calendar during the day. Step 4: Measure your progress Remember to measure your progress toward each goal and adjust as needed. Along with numerical measurements such as weight, you can also create a ranking scale based on how you feel. Remember to celebrate successes and milestones. Weight loss and improved health is not a sprint, it’s a marathon, so be sure to cheer yourself on as
you go. The bottom line when setting a health goal is to know your starting point and make a realistic timeline. Remember to measure your progress along the way, and don’t get discouraged if you have setbacks. It takes time and consistency to achieve anything. If you can find a support system of friends, family and/or coworkers to help motivate you, that’s even better.

paper, and forever postage stamps. In addition, we are in need of $8 McDonald’s gift cards for our 1,000 books program (the prize when a child reaches 700 books). Donations may be dropped off at the library during our operational hours. We appreciate the ongoing generosity of the Northern Lehigh community. The following are additional meetings, events, happenings, etc. scheduled at the library: • Ongoing Book Sale – Hardbound books are $2 and paperback books are $1. Also, puzzles are 25 cents and DVDs are $1. If you spend $5, you will receive a free library tote bag. • Monthly Book Club – The Book Club will meet on Monday, January 5, 2026 in person and via Zoom to share their thoughts on Sandra Brown’s book Long Time Coming. Our librarians will order the books for current and new members. Please contact the library if you are interested in joining the Book Club which
meets the first Monday of every month. • Fall Preschool Story Hour – The final session of Preschool Story Hour was extraordinarily successful with 24 children in attendance and the highlight was a visit from Santa Claus (Mr.Gary Fedorcha). Special thanks to our teachers Lynne Fedorcha, Hali Kuntz, Debbie Barhight, and Joanne Bechtel. Checkout our website for the start of Spring Preschool Story Hour in March, 2026. • Mrs. Santa’s Reading Hour – Mrs. Santa (Lynne Fedorcha) read to an excited group of children on December 5 before Slatington’s Christmas Tree Lighting at the Trailhead. All participants received a coloring book, crayons, and a goodie bag. Thanks to Hali Kuntz for donating the Christmas treat bags. • 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten –

Congratulations to our newest graduates reaching 1,000 books read – 18-month old twins Holden and Lincoln Hedmeck. Four-year old brother Ben reached this milestone a few months ago. We invite your child to participate in this free program funded by the Slatington Rotary. Stop by the library to sign up your child and learn how this exciting reading adventure will prove to be a great opportunity for family bonding. As your child reaches increments of 100 books read, there is a reward to be picked up at the library, Prizes range from sling bags, t-shirts, treasure chest goodies, gift cards, etc. • Friends of the Library (FOL) – We are looking to upstart the FOL group with volunteers interested in helping in many tasks such as fundraisers, checking out or shelving books, decorating our display windows etc. If interested, call the library. • Mark your calendars for our annual Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration on Saturday February 28, 2026 with guest reader Mrs. Marshele George. Let this Christmas season remind us of the beauty of giving and sharing. Thanksgiving Day Drive-Thru Dinner A Huge Success submitted by Sharon Kuntz
On Thanksgiving Day, St. John's UCC, 15 South Second St, Slatington, served 443 meals, (116 were delivered to shut-ins). This was a record-breaking event! We want to thank our church members, volunteers, friends, family and the community, as well as businesses who had any part in making this year’s dinner drive-thru a huge success. This could never have occurred without all of your help. Businesses that supported this event were - Amish Village Bake Shop, Crystal Springs Dairy Farm, GIANT Food Store, Walnutport, Heidel Hollow Farm, Jaindl Farms, Martin’s Famous Pastry Shoppe, Inc. Chambersburg, PA, Mr. Bill’s Poultry Market, Sam’s Club, Sule’s Collison Center, The Buttered Crumb Bakery, Thomson’s Meat Market, Valley Pizza and Weis Market, Schnecksville. The free-will donations on Thanksgiving Day and the excess money after expenses was donated to the Northern Lehigh Food Bank. We should all be very proud of our efforts and Christian giving to our community. Thank you everyone for all of your support!! St. John’s UCC & the Thanksgiving Dinner Committee, Slatington

Happy Winter Holidays, everyone! The Northampton Area Public Library is not closed for the holidays quite yet, though it does feel strange that we’ve already been closed for inclement weather once. I have a strong feeling that this winter may be more inclement than the past few, so we’d like to remind you of our inclement weather policies.
LIBERTY AUTOGLASS LEHIGHTON, PA

Should the library close or delay opening for inclement weather, we will always post to WFMZ’s Stormcenter and the alert banner at the top of our website (northamptonapl.org). When the library closes all items will be due the next day we are open. Please do not stress about getting items back to us! Your safety and the safety of our staff are the priority! Now that we’ve covered that, we still have some fun, educational activities for you to attend before the holidays really get underway. Do you have a feeling that you might be getting a new smartphone, smartwatch, tablet, or laptop as a gift? Why not sign up for a oneon-one Tech Tutoring session? Our knowledgeable volunteers are ready and willing to help you set up new devices, help get your device warranties in order, learn basic skills, and so much more! Both Dylan and Marty are incredibly kind and patient; you couldn’t go wrong with either of them. When you register for a session, we make sure to confirm with both you and your chosen volunteer ahead of time, so please don’t hesitate to sign up to get your technology questions answered! Tech Tutoring sessions are available on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Mondays from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

For older elementary students (Grades 3-5) and slime lovers everywhere, STEAM Club is taking place on Thursday, December 18th. Did you know there are tons of recipes for making slime at home? Some require activators, such as contact lense solution or Borax, which is used in the laundry. Some don’t. Some are for fluffy slime, which looks almost like cotton candy but weighs a lot more. Some are for your classic slime which is way more transparent than fluffy slime. You can see right through it! Sign up to make fluffy candy cane slime with Miss Tessa at 6:00 PM, but for your family’s sake please don’t keep it out on the
furniture when you take it home! Know that we could never forget our teens. You get a between holidays treat with Game Club and Anime Club on Saturday, December 27th. Join us for one or both. As always, snacks will be provided. Remember, you get to make the choices here! You decide the game, and you decide the anime. Gaming starts at 1:00 PM followed by Anime at 2:00 PM. We’ve come to our holiday closings. The library will be closed on December 24th and 25th for the Continued on page 58
