In this second column, we continue to share rare photos of the construction of Plant 5 of the Universal Atlas Cement Company of Northampton.

Construction continued during World War II because some engineers thought the plant could be converted to an aluminum processing plant for the war effort.

This writer interviewed several men who were involved in the construction of Plant 5. Joseph Janders, a graduate of Northampton High School, was given a job as a clerk of the works. He earned $22 a week. The Hewko broth-

ers worked in the early construction, laying railroad tracks until they were drafted to serve the nation in World War II. The manager of the new plant was Leonadis Boucher. Later, his son was a well-known physician in Northampton.

Fire Department.

McDevitt helped form the fire company in 1976 and has dedicated years of service since. He has served in various capacities over the years, such as assistant fire chief, fire chief, fire marshal, assistant fire marshal and emergency management coordinator. McDevitt was instrumental in pre-planning of business, implementation of the rapid-entry key box program, modernization of the mapping and GIS technology, as well as fire prevention activities.

The East Allen Township Board of Supervisors and Township Manager Brent Green presented McDevitt with Resolution 2024-002, the naming of the fire station driveway to “John McDevitt Way,” and dedicating the fire station as the “John McDevitt Fire Station.”

State Representatives Zach Mako and Nick Miller also pre-

sented McDevitt with House citations thanking him for his many years of service.

McDevitt’s leadership, expertise and proactiveness has helped mold the department into what it is today, and without his contributions and dedication, East Allen would not have the station or equipment it has today.

Northampton Area Historical Society to give Presentation on Northampton Businesses

Submitted by IRENE URBAN

The Northampton Area Historical Society will give a presentation on Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. in Northampton's municipal building, located at 1401 Laubach Ave.

The presentation will revolve

Weekend Antiques

around 70 photos of Northampton businesses that developed through the impact of the cement industry. The audience is encouraged to participate by asking questions and adding remarks to the presentation.

There is no cost to attend the program, however donations will be accepted.

Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, LVAC for short, is an independent company providing custom screen printing on a wide variety of goods, including T-shirts.

What started in the Regec family’s back shed in the early 2000s now fills an entire building in Bath at 151 N. Chestnut St.

“To have it grow to this is insane, but nice,” Chris said.

On Thursday, April 25 a ribbon cutting was held to officially celebrate the grand opening of the business.

Bath Mayor Fiorella Mirabito led the ribbon cutting with giant scissors in hand and a welcoming smile as she watched Chris and LVAC call the borough their new home.

“We look forward to seeing the impact LVAC will have on our community,” Mayor Mirabito said.

The journey of LVAC getting to this day has been a long yet rewarding one.

Chris said it all started as a simple, fun hobby. While all his friends played instruments at a young age, Chris was learning how to screen print T-shirts.

Little did he realize though, that “fun hobby” would eventually end up in East Allentown, Fountain Hill and now Bath.

“It feels a little surreal knowing a job that was supposed to be an escape from the rat race became a business with employees,” Chris said.

Today, Chris stands in awe inside his biggest building yet, filled with gigantic screen printing machines, T-shirts, graphic designs and staff members laughing like family.

Chris said the jump to this lat-

est space feels right.

“I get the vibe that this is where I should be,” Chris said. “It feels good.”

While Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations continues to grow in its new spot, Carol and Tony Regec will watch their son with pride. They won’t forget the days when he was that young boy in their

shed with a screen printing machine and one heck of a dream.

“Look at him,” said proud father Tony. “Good luck Chris.”

More information on LVAC, including store hours, can be found online at xLVACx.com.

LVAC plans to hold a housewarming party on Saturday, June 15.

Betty M. Itterly

Betty M. Itterly, 91, of Moore Township, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Country Meadows Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Bethlehem Township. She was the wife of Charles C. Itterly. The couple celebrated 70 years of marriage last July 25. Born in Delps, Moore Township, Betty was a daughter of the late Floyd A. and Cora M. (Fenstermaker) Kocher. At a very young age, she began working on the 100+ acre family farm in Moore Township, before her employment in the garment industry, where she worked for several years and was a member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. Betty also was a certified reflexologist and developed a successful, in-home practice that spanned more than 30 years before retiring in 2020. Flowers and

gardening were among her favorite pastimes, however, Betty and Charles shared many wonderful memories of boating and fishing trips throughout the years. She was a member of Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Moorestown.

Survivors: In addition to her loving husband, Charles, she will be deeply missed by her daughter, Sally Itterly and Valerie Velardo, of Norwood, Massachusetts; along with many nieces and nephews and their families.

Betty was predeceased by four brothers, Willard, Lester, Gordon and Arling Kocher; and four sisters, Ella Edelman, Viola Dilliard, Alma Filchner and Avada Rogers.

Services: A Funeral Service was held on Monday, April 29, 2024, at noon in the George G. Bensing Funeral Home, LLC, 2165 Community Dr., Route 946, in the Village of Moorestown – Bath, PA 18014. Friends and relatives were invited to call on Monday morning from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Interment was private.

Contributions: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to The ALS Association, 1300 Wilson Blvd., Suite 600, Arlington, VA 22209.

Plant 5 used a wet process in producing cement. All cement was shipped by rail until trucking replaced many of the railroad cars. After World War II, the plant was visited by many foreign businessmen. Some visitors came

from Japan and Germany after the war and used American technology to build their new plants.

This writer and his father had the privilege of working at the new Plant 5.

In 1980, the plant was sold to Lehigh Portland Cement Company. At this time, only the kiln that produced white cement was operational.

Sadly, the plant closed in August 1982. Mr. Frank Jany and his brother packed the last bulk railroad car of cement. With emotion in their voices they said, “We packed the last railroad car and knew the Atlas would never open again.”

Before closing, the Atlas Company donated the land for Northampton Area School District’s high school and middle school. Both these schools are located on the former site of Plant 4. The land for the municipal park, swimming pool and banquet center was also donated to the borough. The banquet center was formerly an old bag factory. Through the 87 years of Atlas history, the company never forgot the community of Northampton.

Bath Area Fish Committee Holds 69th Annual Children’s Fishing Contest

Beginning bright and early at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, the Bath Area Fish Committee held their 69th Annual Children’s Fishing Contest at Monocacy

Creek with two days of fishing and fun for children ages 0 to 15.

This year, the Bath Area Fish Committee stocked the creek with 400 trout on Friday evening using funds raised through gen-

erous donations from businesses and individuals in the community.

These donations also allowed the committee to purchase prizes for tagged fish that lucky participants could win, consisting of fishing poles, nets and tackle boxes.

The weather was a bit chilly and windy, but that didn’t bother the young anglers as they arrived early with their families to set up their spots all along Monocacy Creek.

Children patiently waited for Pa. State Representative Zach Mako to blare the horn at 8 a.m. sharp, hoping to hook not just fish, but memories that will last a lifetime.

Then, with baited lines and determination in their hearts, the young anglers cast their lines into the water, watching with bated breath for that telltale tug that signals a bite.

It was a true family affair as proud parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings cheered each other on, celebrating each catch and bonding over the experience.

As fish began to tug, excitement filled the air and young anglers could be heard shouting “Pappy, I got one!” and “Dad, get the net!”

After reeling in each of their catches, children beamed with joy as they held up their wriggling prizes, checking to see if they had caught one of the tagged fish.

Those lucky enough to reel in a tagged fish hurriedly took them to the fishing lounge to collect

Allen Township approves Firefighter tax credit draft, Explores park upgrades

During their meeting on April 23, the Allen Township Board of Supervisors voted to move ahead with the Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit Incentive Program, approving the draft ordinance for advertisement.

The program has been a topic of discussion over the past several months. It offers a 100% real estate tax credit to all volunteer firefighters who reside in the township. (This does not include school tax.) Volunteer firefighters who do not own property may receive an earned income tax credit of up to $350.

Non-residents who volunteer their time to the Allen Township Volunteer Fire Department will also benefit. Those who own property will receive a credit based on the Allen Township millage multiplied by the assessed value

of their property. Non-property owners will receive an income tax credit based on their tax rate in their own municipality.

Supervisors hope these new incentives will reward volunteers for their time, retain volunteers and encourage new volunteers.

Supervisor Gary Behler asked whether volunteers could pick between a real estate tax or an income tax credit. However, per the ordinance, the program uses real estate tax as the default.

Solicitor Lincoln Treadwell said allowing volunteers to choose is possible, but could complicate the program, as individuals may switch back and forth every year. The current program, he added, “covers everyone.”

Supervisors agreed to approve the draft ordinance as is. After a year, they will collect feedback and see if adjustments are neces-

sary.

In other news, supervisors also approved the release of two decades-old agreements with Krapf Park LLC. This property, along Savage Road, has been the subject of several zoning appeals and court battles through the years. In 2023, supervisors were required “by right” to approve a subdivision plan of six lots, half of which will be zoned industrial.

Attorney Dennis McCarthy, on behalf of the developer, requested the release of two agreements, one from 1988 and another from 2014. These agreements have been deemed obsolete and all requirements have been met, except the requirement for a geotechnical analysis. This study is required because a former quarry on the property has been filled and graded. A geotechnical analysis will determine whether there are any sinkholes and also ensure the density of the fill is stable enough for new construction. McCarthy said this study will be conducted as part of the land development phase.

Treadwell told supervisors the development project would still be allowed to move forward whether they release the old agreements or not.

“This project happens regardless,” he said. “Rejecting this won’t stop it.”

Supervisors agreed, with Supervisor Paul Link stating, “I don’t think anything is served by not releasing it.”

Finally, Township Manager Ilene Eckhart proposed several new park improvements, includ-

ing shading structures at Howertown Park along the dugouts, bleachers and playground equipment. These structures are waterproof and would allow families to enjoy the park while staying out of the direct sun. A motion to approve these purchases will be added to the next Board of Supervisors agenda.

The next Board of Supervisors meeting will be Tuesday, May 14 at 6 p.m.

Petersville

True children.

The day out included fishing, food and fun for the entire family, and concluded with a $1,100 check donation presented to Dream Come True, as well as trophies and gift cards for all participants.

In total, the fish committee purchased and stocked the pond with $1,500 worth of trout, as well as $300 worth of food and gift cards for the kiddos.

Some of the items donated to the event included prizes, candy, donuts and snacks, as well as pizzas donated by Red Wolf Bar & Grille and an assortment of colorful trophies that children got to choose from, adorned with fish toppers and engravings commemorating the event, which were generously donated by Tracy Berger-Carmen.

Fish committee member Susan Druckenmiller revealed that this is the 12th or 13th year that they have held the annual fishing event for the children of Dream Come True.

Druckenmiller shared that the kids love to fish and bring their family for a fun-filled day out, which they look forward to every year.

Although there were supposed to be 17 participants this year, only about nine children were able to attend due to the Special Olympics being held on the same day and because of the brisk, windy weather that began to drizzle, which prevented some children from attending based on their health conditions.

Nevertheless, the children that made it out to the event thoroughly enjoyed themselves as fish committee members helped teach them how to bait their hooks, cast their lines, reel in, dehook and clean their fish, while chatting and getting to know one another.

All in all, it was hard to tell whether it was the children or the fishermen that enjoyed the event more, making it a very special day for everyone involved.

The Petersville Rod & Gun Club Fish Committee is always looking for volunteers and will begin fundraising for next year’s event shortly.

In the meantime, those wishing to donate can do so directly to the Dream Come True organization. For more information on Dream Come True and donations, visit dreamcometrue.org.

This Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. is the Borough of Bath community-wide yard sale.

The usual yard sale permit fee will be waived on this day at borough residences and borough businesses. However, no sales are permitted in borough parks.

These items were purchased by or donated to the committee, and were raffled off on Sunday, April 28, which helped raise back some of the funds the committee used for the contest.

Any local businesses, organizations or individuals who wish to donate can make checks payable to the Bath Area Fish Committee, Federal Tax ID# 270504688. The donations can be mailed to BAFC, P.O. Box 143, Bath, PA 18014.
