Lehigh Township fine-tuning Plans for 2023

The Lehigh Township Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, January 24 at 7 p.m. Township Solicitor David Backenstoe opened the meeting by introducing Nancy Arrow, a Northampton County attorney who is running for judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Arrow spoke for a few minutes about her efforts to meet county residents and allow them to put a face to her name. If elected, she

would be the second Republican female judge in Northampton County. She is a former district attorney who currently specializes in family law.

The board approved bills and a request for an extension to a lot consolidation plan by John and Dennis Moyer.

Police Chief Scott Fogel reported “nothing out of the ordinary” during the month of December. He provided the

During their meeting on January 24, the Allen Township Board of Supervisors voted to allow township manager Ilene Eckhart, solicitor Lincoln Treadwell, and engineer Stan Wojciechowski to take action against Rockefeller Development Group to collect payments for new road striping. Rockefeller’s maintenance security bond expires on February 27. However, the developer’s maintenance period ends in August. The township has asked the developers to provide extra coverage during this time, but nothing has been promised. Once the maintenance bond expires, the township will be responsible for repairs to Willowbrook Road. This includes restriping the road, which has not been completed since 2017.

Wojciechowski said roads must be striped every one to two years. He estimates it may cost $20,000 to complete the project.

With this vote, the township will either take action to sue Rockefeller for a portion of their $650,000 security bond or charge them additional security to cover the striping. Eckhart, Wojciechowski, and Treadwell will decide which path is best for the township.

On Feb. 2, 2021, a 30-inch snowstorm collapsed the roof of Hampton Lanes, closing the business for almost two years.

General Manager Jason Lauchnor explained there were many delays since the business’ temporary closure due to supply chain issues, which resulted in 36 weeks to get steel for the building and 16 weeks just to get a glass door for the facility.

“Date after date we missed it, and we just kept plugging and chugging, and here we are many years later,” said Lauchnor.

“Insurance isn’t designed for a two-year shut down, and obviously with supply chain issues, costs went up. The building was appraised before all that, so it cost a lot more than the building was appraised for, and it wasn’t designed to take two years,” Lauchnor added.

In terms of upgrades, Hampton Lanes has a whole new arcade with over 30 games, the floor plan of the facility is open concept, there is an upcoming VIP area,

eventually there will be walls that come out to divide it, a new stone wall separating the larger Hammerhead Hops and Grill (also known as Hammerhead Lounge), big screens everywhere you look, comfortable new furniture, 24 lanes of bowling, LED lighting, and a larger space to play pool. Additionally, Hampton Lanes is in the progress of adding a 20-tap beer wall and a restaurant area as well.

However, all was not lost in the temporary closure of the facility and structural damage. The front desk and the high-top tables in the bowling area have all been made out of wood from the old lanes.

Letter to The Editor

Many citizens have expressed concern about the direction and actions of the Northampton Area School District, including building projects, closing schools, curriculum and resources, borrowing, and taxes. Unfortunately the only way to change the course of the school district is to change the makeup of the school board. The school board governs everything that happens in the District. In 2023, five seats on the school board, including all three Regions, will be up for election. This occurs only once every four years. Prospective candidates can obtain nominating petitions from the Northampton County Elections Office at the Northampton County Government Center in

Hayes

Easton. Candidates may begin obtaining signatures from registered voters on February 14. Completed petitions with at least 10 valid signatures on each petition (more are advised) must be returned to the Elections Office no later than March 7. Candidates for school board may ‘cross-file’ in both Republican and Democrat parties since the school board is considered a nonpolitical office. So school board elections are often decided at the Primary election. Interestingly, only voters registered as Republican or Democrat are allowed to vote in the Primary election. Voters registered as Independent or other affiliation are not allowed to vote in the Primary election. Successful candidates from the Primary election will run in the General election in November, and successful candidates from the General election will take their seats on the school board in December. Citizens interested

in changing the direction of the school district, be it building issues, curriculum and resources, borrowing and taxes, or other issues should consider becoming a member of the school board. More information is available at northamptoncounty.org.

‘Fake is Real’ Campaign to Raise awareness Of dangers of Fentanyl

Submitted by BECKY BARTLETT

Lamont McClure and the Department of Human Services (DHS) held a press conference on “Fake is Real,” a campaign to educate teens, young adults and community members on the dangers of fentanyl on Tuesday, January 31 at 2 p.m. at the DHS Building, 2801 Emrick Blvd., Bethlehem.

Speakers included Lamont McClure, DHS Director Susan Wandalowski, District Attorney Terry Houck, Coroner Zach Lysek, Administrator of Drug and Alcohol Kathleen Jiorle and Sarah Clark from Kudu Creative.

A majority of young people are unaware that four out of ten pills sold on the street contain lethal doses of fentanyl. Two milligrams of fentanyl can be a lethal dose— the size of a few grains of sand.

Northampton County is launching the “Fake is Real” campaign to educate young adults and others about the dangers of fentanyl and to reduce demand for counterfeit prescription pills.

“Illegal drugs pose a clear danger to our children and our soci-

ety,” says Lamont McClure. “The County will continue to raise awareness to prevent addiction and to offer services to treat addiction. We aren’t going to leave anyone behind.”

I Can’t Change

Who in their right mind doesn’t want to keep improving and evolving as a person? Im-

proved character development as we go through our life cycles is something to continually aspire to. I hope you feel this way as well, yet the honest truth is that many check out at some point long before they really should. I have been a witness to as much many times over.

Now what business is it of mine to even suggest that anyone should change? Just because I may want to keep improving myself doesn’t mean that everyone should also. The whole “those with glass houses shouldn’t be throwing stones” analogy comes to mind here. That said, I do think most actually want to improve in some area of their lives. Again, I am simply an active observer of these matters, nothing more.

I believe the fact is, deep down the majority of us truly have a desire to grow and mature, yet it is more than likely we have failed so many times we have given up. That fact alone is maddening to each of us.

Would you ever tell a child of yours, no matter what age they are, to just stop trying to better themself? No, you wouldn’t. That would be an awful thing to say. My mother (who is 88) thinks I am going to participate in an over-50, all-natural bodybuilding competition in Atlantic City in April. I clearly am not, yet I am always playful with mom. You know what she said? Two things:

“I know you can win” and, “You better start training.”

I think that those who say they can’t change need a little encouragement to get going again. If you have a goal worthy of failure then why not get up, dust yourself off, and have another go at it? What’s the worst that can happen?

I want to lift you up today. I want to express that who you are today is more than enough. Change in your life that benefits you and those around you is worth exploring. Whether some big, glorious goal to aspire to, rinsing out your coffee cup instead of leaving it in the sink all day, or any intentional change for that matter, could make a difference in your world.

I write this week’s article as a friend of mine told me about his father, now deceased, who worked at a meat factory his whole life in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He started his shift every day at 6 a.m., yet his feet would hit the ground at 4 a.m. and he would be at the factory at 5 a.m. every day for the better part of 40 years. Why would he do that you ask? Well, this man would be there before everyone else sharpening his knives for the day ahead. He prepared. He knew that sharpening his tools would make such a huge difference. What really struck me was that my friend’s father not only took his own time to sharpen his tools, he also sharpened the six people he worked with knives’ each and every morning as well. His father told him that in the beginning his coworkers had trouble with such sharp knives on a daily basis until they got used to it. Long story short, his line was the most productive, efficient, injury and drama free than any other team.

A rising tide lifts all boats my friend.

So, take time today and consider if you can, want, or will change, improve, develop in some particular way that will build positive momentum in your life and perhaps also benefit someone in your circle. I believe with all my heart that such introspection can

change the world, your world. Have a go at it. "Natural Perspectives" is a health commentary only and does not claim to diagnose and/ or make treatment recommendations. Always seek the advice of your health care professional.

Adult Soapbox Racing is Back after An 11-year Hiatus

Submitted by

The Nazareth Adult Soapbox Racing Association (NASBRA) is excited to announce that after 11 years, they are once again bringing “Racing Back to Nazareth.”

The race is set for Saturday, June 3 on Prospect Street in Nazareth. This is not your typical Boy Scout event. Anything from coffins to modified shopping carts are allowed. You build it, you race it.

Drivers and pushers must be 18 years of age or older. Cars must be powered by the strength of the push and the gravity of the hill only. Car registration must be completed in advance, online. No “day of” registrations. The event will consist of a standard double elimination bracket, with opportunities to adjust the car in between heats. Car inspections and practice runs begin at 9 a.m. on the day of the race.

The race commences with a green flag drop at noon. The event is free for spectators. Bring your chair and take a seat along Prospect Street to cheer on your favorite car.

Sponsorship is also available with many levels to choose from. For additional information, for sponsorship information, and how to register, visit “NASBRA” on Facebook, or visit lehighchurches.org and click on “events.”

Car registration is now open and includes two free t-shirts. Registration is $50 until March 20 and then increases to $65.

Proceeds will benefit the Nazareth YMCA and the Lehigh Conference of Churches.

NASBRA is presented by the Lehigh Conference of Churches, a Lehigh Valley non-profit agency connecting basic human needs to the most vulnerable people in the Lehigh Valley: food, housing, dignity, a sense of belonging, and hope for the future. Since 1954, we have helped families and individuals maximize their independence and reach their full potential. The Conference provides rental assistance, intensive case management, soup kitchen (three meals a day, five days a week), day shelter, and outreach. In other news, Wojciechowski is reviewing a road signage proposal from FedEx. Received on January 20, the proposal offers a plan for adding truck signage at the intersection of East Bullshead and Willowbrook roads. This signage will warn drivers not to turn onto East Bullshead. During supervisors’ February meeting, Wojciechowski will have a recommendation on the proposal.

Supervisors also approved security upgrades to Howertown Park. The park will soon receive expanded Wi-Fi, security control systems to protect the field house, and a new surveillance camera system. The security control system will use either key fobs or codes to restrict and monitor access to the park’s field house. Meanwhile, the security cameras and expanded Wi-Fi will ensure that enhanced surveillance encompasses the entire park.

Construction will start soon. Minimal park clearing is required to help establish a line of sight, while additional trenching is needed to make room for the WiFi cables.

These upgrades were included in the 2023 budget. Eckhart predicts the Wi-Fi and cameras will cost $31,500, while the control system in the field house will cost $6,538. The township received a $5,000 donation from JaindlWatson to help cover some of these costs.

“A camera will not necessarily stop something,” said Eckhart. “[But] at least people will know [the park] is under some surveillance.”

Supervisors also approved the purchase of additional racking and shelf space for the township’s public works building. The racking, which will cost the township $8,540, will provide additional floor space for the township’s new equipment.

Finally, supervisors announced the seasonal closure of the Allen Township Dog Park from February 20 through the end of April. The township orders this closure

regularly to allow grass to grow before the park’s busy spring and summer seasons.

“It has worked really well,” said Eckhart.

The closure has been announced online and signs will be posted.

Before the meeting adjourned,

Supervisor Dale Hassler asked his fellow supervisors and members of public works to keep a closer eye on truck traffic entering the Geodis warehouse. The township is still experiencing backups onto Willowbrook Road caused by trucks using the road to stage.

“If it keeps persisting, we are going to have to take action,” he said.

Only four to five trucks can enter the development’s security area at a time. Meanwhile, only three trucks can stage inside the property.

“They did not expect to have

15 trucks show up at one time,” said Wojciechowski.

Supervisor Gary Behler asked Eckhart to invite a Geodis official to the board’s next public meeting.

“There needs to be some type of remediation,” he said. “What is happening there is not working.”

The next Board of Supervisors meeting will be Tuesday, February 14 at 6 p.m.

Court of Honor held for Troop 79 Eagle Scouts

On Sunday, January 29 at noon, an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony was held for two Troop 79 Eagle Scouts, Kailyb Leitch and Noah Kapustic, both of Northampton.

The ceremony was held at St. John the Baptist Church, 3024 S. Ruch St., Whitehall (Stiles).

Kailyb Leitch, son of Ryan and Julie Leitch of Northampton, earned his Eagle Scout rank on August 18. Leitch’s

Eagle Scout project benefited the Queenship of Mary Church in Northampton. Leitch refurbished, refreshed and updated the train the church uses during their parish festival.

Noah Kapustic, son of Michael and Kimberly Kapustic of Northampton, earned his Eagle Scout on November 17.

Kapustic’s Eagle Scout project entailed updating and increasing the amount of shelving for the Whitehall Food Pantry,

based out of St. John the Baptist Church in Stiles. Kapustic procured, painted and installed the shelving.

State Rep. Zach Mako attended the Court of Honor and issued House citations to both Scouts, congratulating them on their achievement.

Troop 79 recently held an open house on Monday, January 23 to provide information about Scouting. Troop 79 is open to ages 11-16.

board with a printed report of police activity in 2022, noting it is largely in line with previous years. Traffic citations and crashes are down slightly. Criminal arrests are also trending downward since lockdown was lifted. Board Vice-Chairman Cynthia Miller inquired as to the status of department vehicles and the chief assured everyone they are all in working order. The police will conduct a blood drive on February 9. Those who wish to donate can sign up by calling the township office at 610-7676771 or visiting www.redcross. org.

Township Manager Alice

Rehrig stated an end to the Cherryville intersection project is currently in sight. Two corrections are being made by the contractor and everything should be finished by the time of the next board meeting. The board approved a request for payment from Hanover Engineering as well as a change order related to the matter.

Rehrig also spoke with the architect about moving forward on the maintenance building,

per the discussion at the previous board meeting. She will report back when she has more information. The amendments for the zoning ordinance which had been previously discussed were advertised for adoption; however, after the advertisement was placed, the committee discovered some wording which needs revision. The ordinance is thus not quite ready for adoption and will be brought back to the board after the necessary changes are made.

A discussion was held concerning the comprehensive plan map. The board members each received a copy of the current map; the planning commission made a recommendation for some changes. These changes will not alter zoning in any way, but provide a vision for potential alterations. The subject was tabled until the next board meeting to allow the members more time to examine the details.

The board then discussed appointed positions within the township, as requested by Cynthia Miller. After some debate, Miller and board member David Hess volunteered to work together to outline a specific written process to follow when

making such appointments, and will submit a draft for the board’s approval.

There will be a special meeting on February 15 regarding a proposed solar farm at parcel J2-7-14A-0516. Solicitor Backenstoe will be working with Alice Rehrig to look at some issues related to the Jaindl project.

As the floor was opened for public comment, the same resident who has suffered property damage from dead trees came forward to inform the board that on Christmas Eve, another tree came down and damaged

her service line. This caused a surge in her home and she still does not have use of her oven or any real heat source. Although the dead trees at Indian Trail Park were removed, the trees along Mangrove Drive were not, and it was one of these which fell on her property. She has filed a claim with MetEd, adding that she cannot withstand any more damage, and wanted the board to be aware of the situation. Board member Gerald Pritchard agreed that she had “every right to complain” and offered his apology for the situ-

ation. Public Works Director Frank Zamadics will be directed to go through the entire neighborhood to mark dead trees, and David Hess volunteered to assist him in the matter.

The next supervisors meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 14 at 7 p.m. in the municipal building at 1069 Municipal Rd., Walnutport.

“Livable Landscapes funding is essential for municipal park improvements, outdoor recreation, regional trails, ecological restoration, and open space land conservation within the County,” remarks Lamont G. McClure, County Executive. “Open Space plays a vital role in the quality of life in our communities by protecting the environment, connecting our greenways and waterways, and providing overall health and wellness benefits.”

The purpose of the grant program is to protect the County’s important natural features by

assisting municipalities and organizations to acquire, restore, and enhance permanently protected lands to conserve natural resources and provide outdoor recreation for future generations. Since 2006, Northampton County has awarded $19.735 million in Livable Landscapes grants for successful local and regional park improvements, recreation, land conservation, ecological restoration, and trail projects.

Any updates will be posted on Facebook NorCoParks and Trails.
