Saylani Welfare Trust: There are many other sectors and organizations adding value to Pakistan. One of the active organizations in social welfare that is adding value to the society is Saylani Welfare Trust. The purpose of the inception is to relieve poor people in terms of financial crisis and eliminate it to the extent to which Saylani trust can. Increasing inflation results to increase in poverty, higher the utility bills and other expenses.

Until now, many unique achievements have been triumphed by the youth of which many people are not aware off. There are many unsung heroes who need to be recognized because of their day and night efforts to add something to Pakistan.

The trust tries to provide comfort to poor in inelastic goods and services so they can utilize their resources in other utilities. After some issues get resolved, many families are able to groom their kids in a better manner. The qarz-e-hasna to start a setup is also done by these welfare associations. Eventually this step will add value to the society and will become a platform to increase the productive masses for the country. Saylani Welfare trust has biggest setup to feed hungry people throughout the city. There is no restriction and exception of class on the dastarkhwan of Saylani and the core motto of this open invitation is to not to hurt someone’s self respect.Saylani Welfare Trust believes in providing employment and earning sources to people so that they can run their families easily. They provide CNG Rickshaws to people. They even offer treatment facilities to poor and also provide wheel chairs to old and disables. The water coolers of Saylani in hospitals, roads or other public places are always working to sooth thirsty people.

Books Shack: It is obvious that education plays an important role in the development of a nation and same is the case with Pakistan. During the past 60 years, there is a lot of development in the education sector that gave fertile results but the need is still there. We are a nation of around 190 million people with limited resources, but a change is possible. The question is how is it possible? If every individual convinces his influential circle to start a little project for the betterment of Pakistan’s education system, it can add a great value to the economy. Seeing the brain drain and misshandled talent of Pakistan, an energetic group of people decided to start a social enterprise, though with very limited resources but knowing how to create a multiplier effect. They had a sole business plan to earn money by selling books and to utilize that profit in the education of under privileged children. For making synergy and creating awareness, a donation drive with Kumak and Splash was conducted a well. The event proved a success as they received a number of books that could be used in the education of poor kids. The main purpose was to generate their own profit in order to serve poor kids and gradually implementing their plans. Books Shack at the current situation is dealing with course books only but is planning to increase the circle in engineering and medical colleges.

Gwader Port: This will improve several major issues. First of all, it will be the elevation in the literacy rate and secondly it will improve the economic condition. And, obviously when the number of learned people will increase, economic condition will get better and this way the rate of child labor will also fall. This idea has got a great feedback from the society especially from the youth and from the corporate sector as well. Numerous meetings are in row with corporate to increase the sales turnover so more kids can be facilitated. As mentioned about providing the vision, members of “Books Shack” will soon be starting a program to carry training in remote areas and schools to build the confidence of students and making their routes concrete.

While mentioning two important sectors i.e. education and eradicating poverty, industries are also playing an important role in the economy and if the resources are utilized well, then the change in our country is obvious. Gwadar, which was some decade back a fishing village, is now getting converted in a duty free port and a free economic zone. Located near an important shipping lane, the deep sea port was built by the China Harbor Engineering Company Group. This land is a gold mine for Pakistan’s economy if these resources are utilized well. Gwadar can emerge as a key shipping point and bring Pakistan a good amount of income. The projects initiated with Chinese government are worth of billions of dollars and can bring prosperity to Pakistan. The Chinese government has invested heavily in this project so that landlocked western China could benefit from access to the sea. In the following years the investment would increase in trillion dollars figure. As an emerging superpower hungry for energy, China needs access to the oil and gas rich Central Asian states. The oil refinery in Gwadar is expected to have output of 60000 barrels which is a huge ammount

and may help Pakistan too much in monetary terms. They are currently helping the Pakistan government to widen the Karakoram highway that connects Islamabad to China through Pakistan's high mountain ranges. It appears that there is a long-term plan to eventually connect the Karakoram highway with Gwadar.

Peer Syed Ahmed Shah Bukhari… By: Erum Inaam

Sir.

Gladwyn Jebb was a prominent British civil servant, diplomat and politician as well as the Acting Secretary-General of the United Nations (24 October 1945 – 2 February 1946). Ahmed Shah Bukhari, commonly known as “Patras” was his opponent. At one of the Security Council’s meeting at UNO, this man from Pakistan drew an impression on Sir Jebb through his deliberate arguments that he stood up from his chair went before Patras and said: “Sir I surrender….Sir! You are diplomat’s diplomat.” This was the day when the organization like UNO was extremely convinced of this pleasant but indeed a serious looking man’s way of communication. Patras had not got a single taste of charm that can define his personality; he was the man of various beautiful colors, a rainbow, whose attraction was strong enough to get anyone’s attention wherever he went.

Background: Born on 1st October 1898 in Peshawar, he was an Urdu humorist, educator, essayist, broadcaster and diplomat from Pakistan. He is best known for his humorous writings in Urdu literature. Bukhari received his early education in Peshawar and in 1916 moved from Islamia College Peshawar to attend Government College, Lahore. After completing his Masters in English, he was appointed as lecturer at the same institution. Bukhari left Government College, Lahore in 1925 in order to complete Tripos in English at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University. 1927, he returned to Government College, Lahore as a Professor and remained there until 1939. Before the formation of Pakistan in

1947, he was the Director General of All India Radio. Being a Professor of English Literature, he also served as the Principal of Government College, Lahore from 1947 to 1950. The Urdu poets Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Noon Meem Rashid, K.K Aziz and Zia Mohyuddin were among his students. After the formation of Pakistan, he served as the first permanent representative of Pakistan in the United Nations from 1951–1954. From 1954-1958 he remained as the Under Secretary of the UN, Head of Information. He died during his diplomatic service and is buried in New York, USA.

His work: He tried his hand in many different literary forms of Urdu – for instance, he attempted light essays, wrote literary criticism, translated some of the modern classics of English literature, introduced early Greek philosophy to Urdu readers and undertook polemical writings as well. But what has sustained his reputation as a writer in Urdu are his light essays which are known as “Patras Kai Mazameem”. There is a refreshing innovation and charming humor in these essays. Such impulsive essays of contemporary interest were written neither before him nor after him. This is a fact that is admitted by many renowned Urdu writers and most of them are Patras own students. His ultimate struggle was to build as many fine and erudite individuals from his teachings as he could do during his teaching tenure. His students are of quite an old age now but when they talk about their wise teacher Patras, a pleasant smile is spread at their freckled faces and they share the joyous moments they spent with their beloved teacher.

IDENTITY MAG I 11

His role does not end as a diplomat or a humor writer but he also had this incredible ability to write speeches that were read by the leaders like Liaquat Ali Khan. His letters are another aspect which displays him as a person to be praised for his versatility. Amongst the adorable topics he had written under the title of Patras Kai Mazamin, “Kuttay” (The Dogs) is a fabulous Urdu essay written by Patras Bukhari in which he has penned down his thoughts with wise, decent and at the same time funny words of Urdu Adab and gave us this marvelous piece of write up. A part of it says:

He might have performed his tasks in several different fields of life and with exceptionally beautiful grades he had made all these fields to be thankful enough to him for his precious contributions, but in a bigger scenario, his charisma was to communicate in a fine, concise, decent and pleasant manner with a remarkable convincing and persuasive style to converse everywhere he went.

“Nature within her inmost self divides To trouble men with having to take sides” Robert Frost (1956) As a mark of respect and friendship that Prof. A.S. Bukhari had for the great American poet Robert Frost, the above couplet written by Robert Frost to Professor A.S. Bukhari has been inscribed on Professor Bukhari’s tombstone.

Our Dedication to 14 August! When I was a child, my mother told me tales of how Muslims in India struggled under Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah to create a new country where they could live in peace, and how Pakistan emerged on the world map. I was born three years after Pakistan's birth but I have always been in love with my country. I read books on Pakistan movement and its leaders; how they worked hard to make a great dream come true. I wish mothers this day would also read history of Pakistan's making to their children so that they would become proud Pakistanis.

I along with my two researcher fellows, Mr. Qaiser Qasri and Mr. Noor-ul-Ain compiled articles, stories and incidents about our journey towards independence and historical war of 1965. We decided to get it published in the form of a book by the name of "Watan ka qarz naama". Later the sad demise of Mr. Qasri and Mr. Noor-ulAin a few years after the publishing came as shock to me as they didn’t lived long enough to witness the success of the book. It is my dream to publish the second version of this book and I wish someday I would be able to achieve this goal of mine.

The Independence Day festival I attended at Carlton hotel, Karachi was an unforgettable experience for me as I enjoyed the event to the fullest. Especially the performance of a foreign band on Pakistani National songs and the Arabic songs by Middle Eastern singers were the most appreciating part.

On every 13th August, I and my sister used to decorate our home with small flags for Independence Day but mostly it used to get ruined because of the heavy rain around night time but that never stopped us from celebrating 14th August with immense patriotism.

We as kids decorated our house with buntings and flags, wore green attire, spend the day watching special transmission of 14th August and making plans to serve our nation.

My friends and I used to be so enthusiastic about collecting all the thrown away flags on the street. Along with that, participating in the theatre, debate competitions and singing national songs out-loud in the school van serves as a great memory of our beloved independence day.

My uncle took all of us for a ride and as we reached the famous I.I Chundrigar road, we joined in a huge crowd that carried a pretty huge flag of Pakistan and walked straight on the road holding it. Right after the clock struck 12, we all sang the national anthem and a lot of national songs as well.

Rabia Mushtaq

Erum Inaam Hoisting a flag atop of my house and wearing a flag badge just cheered me up. It reminded me that I have a land to put my foot on and call it homeland while some people might be dying in slavery. Love for nation should never end no matter how worst the conditions are.

The participant from my class was absent at the day of the debate competition. But I told my teacher, "every Pakistani should be given a chance to express their love for their country and my class would also get that chance today” and I represented my class as a speaker on Pakistan’s Birthday.

I still cherish singing national anthem and national songs daily in school and also on national days of August and September.

I remember how my brother and I packed and gave away our clothes, favorite food items and toys for earthquake victims in 2005 out of love and patriotism. We will continue to aid our brothers and sisters continue to love my homeland, no matter what and where I will be.

When I was around 7 to 8 years old, My parents took me on a long drive to Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Habib Bank Plaza and many other places illuminated with 14th August decorations. The roads were jammed and youth were singing national songs.

On 14th August, we wore badges, decorate our house and school with buntings and hoisted a big national flag on the roof. We use to light our house with candles at night and not sleep until all of them have blown out. All these activities boosted up our morale and also our patriotism.

My friend and me bought some sweets from our pocket money and distributed them to the slums dwellers along with a flag badge. The rain shouted out loud and the sweet fragrance of soil made me feel that the mission is accomplished. Hope I would be one of the igniters of a 1000 souls around.

Ramadan Mubarak

True spirit of Ramadan-

Religious and Scientific! By Rabia Mushtaq

Ramadan is one of the holiest months of the Islamic Lunar Calendar with practices and deeds that are meant to purify one-self from thoughts that are counter to Islam. All the Muslims around the world warmly welcome this month by removing material desires and developing the ability to fully focus on devotion and service to God.

Religious effects on human body: Muslims bow down to Allah for asking repentance of sins and refuge from hellfire, since Allah showers his blessings in this Holy month. Therefore a man’s connection with Allah keeps him away from all the unnecessary worldly deeds and brings him closer to the Almighty by offering Salah and reading Quran. Fasting helps one to avoid all sinful deeds, apparent as well as hidden, but for that one has to have the fear of Allah. Only then one can keep himself away from negative things such as: lie, fight, anger, intolerance, abusive or indecent language, backbiting, bribery etc. Ramadan promotes unity and brotherhood among Muslims around the world. It helps one realize the value of time as it sets a very good routine. People offer Salah and take the meal on time that makes them healthy and wise. Ramadan makes a Muslims realize the true essence of charity. Muslims who have a certain amount of wealth gives Zakat to the needy in order to experience the feeling of satisfaction and tranquility in their hearts as Ramadan is a festive season for every Muslim, so no one should be left to celebrate it to the fullest.

Fasting helps in realizing the sufferings of people who starve and die of hunger and thirst. It makes us realize the importance of all the eatables that Allah has blessed us with. Therefore many people not only feed themselves before and after fast but also help those who cannot do it for themselves. Hence Ramadan gives the message of sharing.

Scientific effects on human body: Fasting has a tremendous amount of scientific and health benefits. It is good for one’s health and personal development. It does not pose any medical risks to healthy individuals. However children, pregnant women, elderly people and sick people are exempted from fasting. A team of cardiologists in the UAE found that people observing Ramadan enjoyed a positive effect on their lipid profile, which means there is a reduction of cholesterol in the blood. Several academic studies confirmed health benefits arising from Ramadan fasting, such as lower LDL cholesterol, loss of excessive fatty tissue or reduced anxiety. People keep fast before dawn and break the fast by dusk at Magrib and often eat dinner too after Magrib prayers and then head off to offer Isha and Taraweeh. This helps them digest food that they have consumed at the time of Iftari and dinner as well and later keep them empty enough to again eat Sehri in order to keep fast. Good Deeds

An act of human kindness by Umer Hafeez

Once I met a labor in a mosque near my office. I initiated talk to him for a moment in hope of knowing more. I inquired things related to his work. First he was too shy but after a little discussion, he opened up about the hardships and the things he do to carry out his daily affairs. He has two kids and despite of all the budget constraints, he home-schooled them, in hope of making them educated and privileged part of the society. My organization Book Shacks is making arrangements to get those kids enrolled in a school. Being a Pakistani, we should take part in helping the needy and unprivileged people in any way we can. Out little effort can change the life of others.

Mummy and Baba I love you. Despite of your busy schedule, you both have spared out time and celebrated your wedding anniversary and Eid this year with your kids.

Maha Anwaar

Eid Mubarak to all my friends who have left me and went to some foreign country. You backstabbed me pals but I still love you and will be with you all very soon. Cheers.

Shahan Dawood

This is my first Eid outside Pakistan and I am missing my family and friends very much. This time reminds me of all the crazy moments and beautiful memories I have spent back home.

Faiza Ali

Dear, It's more than an Eid wish and more than a message too as it comes with warmth and loving thoughts because it is meant for you. Happy Eid Mubarak. Only yours,

Ali Usaid

Eating Out

Hot, Spicy Cheesy By Maria Iqbal

Disclaimer: This is not intended to make the readers hungry. I will not be responsible for the consequences of this craving. There are a number of attention-grabbing food outlets in Karachi, but the most amazing of all I found was Hardee's, which is located in the heart of North Nazimabad, near Five Star Chawrangi. Hardee's is a restaurant chain located mostly in the South East and Mid East regions of the United States and has been ranked number five by the United States Fast Food Chains. Its International franchises are located in the Middle East and Pakistan. Once I, along with my mates, visited Hardee’s and made a quick dash to the counter. We gave our orders and headed towards the corner table of the bottom section which was Wi-Fi enabled. The seating arrangement includes comfortable red sofas and dining chairs around the tables. The restaurant staff was friendly. There's a more secluded section on the upper floor which has a children's play area. A soft drink wending machine is present on each floor but if you are thinking that refill is free of cost then you are certainly mistaken. The chairs were comfortable and through the glass windows, we could observe the road outside. People from the Middle class to Upper middle class, waiting for their lip-smacking orders were cheerily chattering. It was afternoon so at this time of the day, mostly office colleagues and students visit Hardee’s. Children were playing and young were painfully boisterous and wild. Hardee’s have fabulous range of Charbroiled burgers, chicken and other side dishes, cool kids combos and beverages. We had ordered Chicken Fillet Burger with Large Crispy Curls, Mushroom and Swiss burger with Onion rings, Santa Fe Chicken and Original Thick Burger with Natural-cut Fries. The quantity was so much that we had to share. I had ordered Chicken Fillet and it was incredibly luscious and very well-seasoned chicken patty

topped with yummy melted cheddar cheese, compassionately layered with mouth-watering white sauce Both the taste and quality are worth mentioning. Their desserts include hand scooped milk shakes of other flavors, coffee, iced tea, and all. We got out as soon as our bills were paid. Hardee's is a place where you go with your family, friends or colleagues and can enjoy to fullest.

Fun Time Please Don't Read This Poem

And all because you read this, Instead of having fun,

Please don't read this poem,

It's too late now, amigo,

It's only meant for me,

The poem's nearly done.

That's it. Just move along now,

There's only one solution,

There's nothing here to see.

Here's what you'll have to do,

Besides, I'm sure you'd rather,

Tell all your friends and family,

Just go outside and play,

They shouldn't read it too.

So put the poem down now, And slowly back away. Hey, why are you still reading? That isn't very nice, I've asked you once politely, Don't make me ask you twice. I'm telling you, it's private, Do not read one more line, Hey! That's one more. Now stop it! This isn't yours; it's mine. You're not allowed to read this, You really have to stop, If you don't quit this instant, I swear I'll call a cop. He'll drag you off in handcuffs, He'll lock you up in jail, And leave you there forever, Until you're old and frail. Your friends will all forget you, You won't be even missed, Your family, too, will likely, Forget that you exist.
