Competition

"Share words for Allama Iqbal and win." On this Iqbal Day, Identity Magazine give you a chance to win by sharing your message for Allama Iqbal, Best message will get a chance to win a surprise gift!!! So what are you waiting for start sharing‌ Entries: 1. Shumaila Zaki Khan: 'Iqbal was a remarkable poet of worldwide fame and his work will live forever'Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah. Many of us have forgotten who these great people were, what they wanted for Pakistan and how they served their country. Let them not be 'only pictures' that we hang at our offices and schools. They are there for a reason; know what that reason is...maybe we'll have our old Pakistan back if we did. 2. Tehreem Iftikhar: I am not eligible to say great words for such a great personality but since childhood I feel a pride of being born in November. Whenever, I got an off on Iqbal day on 9 November, I took another off at November 10 on my birthday. He is a Life of Pakistan because he is the one who dreamed of this nation. 3. Abdul Mueed: Concerning his poetry DUA, I will only say that the best with Allama is that he possesses a vision with him, and he wanted us to be a man of vision. He was God gifted genius. He is one in a million. These are some words that I just mentioned; otherwise I don’t have words to appreciate him and his poetry. Happy Iqbal Day. 4. Danyal Zafar: May ALLAH bless him with HIS unlimited blessings. May his soul rest in peace. He is the national hero of Pakistan. 5. Muhammad Ayyaz Sheikh: Khirad ko ghulami se azad kar... Jawanon ko peron ka ustad kar... Zamnay kay andaz badlay gaye... Naya ragg hai sazz badlay gaye. 6. Syed Ommer Amer: Iqbal was a visionary and what's required is that we develop a habit in us to discuss and ponder over the issues instead of blaming. Ask yourself what you have done for the betterment of this nation. Iqbal didn't complain, he delivered and so should we, if we are to succeed.

7. Parsa Hassan: Allama Iqbal sada bhar ke mozo thy, hain, aur INSHALLAH rahein gai. Unki zaat aur kalam bilashuba har nasl k har fard k liye mashel -e- rah ka fariza anjam deti ai hy. Iqbal ny jis falsfa-ekhudi ka sabaq dia hy unnka aik shair khudi aur iss k amal ki bht kamyabi sy wzaahat karta hy aur wo shair hy "Ho agr khud nagar khud gar wa khud geer khudi ... Yeh bhi mumkin hy k tu mout sy bhi mar na saky" Allah hmein Iqbalshnasi aur Iqbal fehmi ka sharf ata kary.

This one is most favorite which he wrote in the memory of His beloved mother Kis Ko Ab Ho Ga Watan Mein Aah! Mera Intizar 8. Maliha Syed: Allah selects precious and worthy souls for the noble achievements. Allah chose Iqbal to take the noteworthy initiative and thus Iqbal dreamt of Pakistan, our beloved homeland. Dreams that turn into a reality are not the ordinary dreams and also the ordinary persons do not sight them. Iqbal is our inspiration, our well wisher and a great person who did a lot for his nation, that is why he is still alive and he will stay alive for ever. May Allah Rest His Soul In Peace, Ameen.

Kon Mera Khat Na Ane Se Rahe Ga Be-Qarar Khak-e-Marqad Par Teri Le Kar Ye Faryad Aun Ga Ab Duaye Neem Shab Mein Kis Ko Main Yaad Aun Ga! Tarbiat Se Teri Main Anjum Ka Hum-Qismat Huwa Ghar Mere Ajdad Ka Sarmaya-e-Izzat Huwa Daftar-e-Hasti Mein Thi Zareen Waraq Teri Hayat

9. Omar Iftikhar: My message is that we should read Iqbal's poetry on a daily basis and try to understand the hidden meaning which Iqbal wanted us to discover so we can go beyond our thought, learn from our within and accept ourselves as we are to achieve self-actualization. 10.

Hira Nazir: Okay, so here I am commenting not that I want to win just because that I simply owe this personality ever lived. I admire him. Iqbal is my Inspiration. His poetry is Universal. Everything, from a nation in despair to the glory once thrived, from a patriot scholar to the zealous shaheen, from khudi to ishq-ehaqeeqi. Iqbal is having many colors. Kehtay hain kuch loug hotey hain jo zamano kai pechay bhagtety hain lekin kuch logo kai pechay zamaney bhaagtey hain. Indeed, Iqbal is the later one. He is the poet of all time and every time I think there exist no words strong enough that could explain the elegance and gratitude of this greatest poet. Woh bara apdeshak hai maan bato mein moh let hai so at the other place he is App hi goya musafir app hi manzil hun mein. Shikwa mein he is a learner so in Jawab-eShikwa he has the steadfast tone. He came, smiled and conquered. He won everything! His words won him. He is the man who made a Nation. No words! Simply No words! Iqbal is the man who is Incredible! My most favorite piece of his poetry:

Thi Sarapa Deen-o-Dunya Ka Sabaq Teri Hayat Umer Bhar Teri Mohabbat Meri Khidmat Rahi Main Teri Khidmat Ke Qabil Jab Huwa Tu Chal Basi And just see his bewilderedness in this verse: Dhoondhta phirta hun aye Iqbal apne app ko App hi goya musafir app hi manzil hun mein And then he becomes a patriot leader by saying: Zamana Aya Hai Behijabi Ka, Aam Didar-e-Yar Ho Ga Sakoot Tha Parda Dar Jis Ka, Woh Raaz Ab Ashkar Ho Ga Daayar-e-Maghrib kai rehney walon, Khuda ki basti dukan nahi hai Khara jisey tum samajh rahey hou, Woh ab zar-e-kaam ayar hoga Tumhari tehzeeb apney khanjar se app hi khudkushi karegi Jo shaakh-e-nazak pai ashiyana banega, Na paaiedar hoga. And then the ever-impressive Khudi: Tu Raaz-e-Kun fukan hain apni ankhon pe ayan hoja Khudi ka razdaan hoja, Khuda ka tarjuman hoja Khudi mein doob ja ghafil yeh sirr-e-zindagani hai Nikal har halqa-e-shaam o sehar mein bekaran hoja

And the world comes to an end... By Mateen Hamza st

Are you worried that Dec 21 , 2012 may be the doomsday on Planet Earth? There is no further date in it. Or are you happy that you have already spent your credit card limit in shopping because you won’t be receiving the bill. Whatever the case may be, here are my predictions regarding how the world would come to an end: 1. Mayans or no Mayans, for Pakistanis the world will eventually come to an end when the government will decide to close all private TV channels leaving only PTV to watch. Sheer frustration will lead to depression and eventually to death. 2. Mark Zuckerberg will suddenly find out that his family roots link back to Mayans. To honor the Mayan doomsday, he will shut down Facebook abruptly without even informing the Security Exchange Commission. People will come out on streets to protest. During protests Facebookians will actually meet their connections for the first time in real life and once when they will find out the true identity of whom they were interacting with, that will trigger the real genocide leading to the end of the world. 4. Hollywood and Marvel comics will decide to scrap Superman, Batman, Hulk, Spider Man, Mighty Man etc. leaving the world at the hands of ordinary people who by now are so used to Super Heroes that they themselves will fail to save the world. 5. To become the first in the history of the world, a Pakistani businessman will buy a black hole from aliens and will try it to import it to our world. The rest is black history. 6. As of date, aliens have been showing good gesture simple by keeping an eye on us through UFOs. But continuously sending satellites in the outer space and keeping a 24 x 7 watch on aliens, we have invited the wrath of aliens. Not only that, the space agency without consulting our alien brothers robbed the status of Pluto so one strong laser beam or pushing an asteroid or a meteor towards us by the aliens will be the last nail in our coffins. 7. The recent Visa relaxations agreement between Pakistan and India will result in extensive travelling between the countries. Since they will travel through buses, trains, and even on foot, therefore the movement of mass and weight will change the planetary alignment of Earth in relation to Sun. The geographic coordinates will be messed up hence the Earth will head directly to greet planet Mars. 8. To protect the environment, many countries have implemented green movement initiatives in their office building, homes, shopping malls etc. The city planners had launched so many green projects without realizing that quite soon they will run out of the green color. That day, pollution will become so rampant that eventually the world will erode away. 9. The global bhatta mafia will unite globally and start money extortion from all retail outlets in the world. To protest against bhatta, the ice depots will go on strike. Their closure will further worsen global warming and will raise the temperature of planet earth by many Celsius degrees. Ultimately it will become unbearable and the world will end.

Christmas in Karachi!!! By Syeda Maliha Begum

Another

year has come just like that; the

Christmas is around the corner again. The preparations of the celebrations are at its peak. People are preparing for the gifts and practicing for the carols of the midnight mass. The family of Mr. Andrew is busy preparing to light up the candles which they do every year. They lit 4 candles on the four Sundays one by one before the Christmas. “Ooo Linda, it's fun time, we are only a month far from Christmas. What have you planned for the Christmas eve?” excitedly, Angeline asked her friend. “Yeah I have given three of my dresses to the tailor to get ready on time. I have bought a present for you as well. We are recoloring our house for this mega event”. Linda replied. Mr and Mrs. Andrew are really excited for this year’s Christmas, as they are planning to tie the knot of stronger relations with their friend Mr. John. An engagement party of their daughter Linda and Mr. John’s son Joseph is going to take place on the Christmas eve. Religions are highly influenced by the culture of the region. Culture is a silent language of the society. Mr and Mrs. Andrew are also celebrating Christmas according to the Pakistani culture. Christmas is the most valuable and sacred event of all festival of Christians. This holy celebration is dedicated to the birth of Jesus Christ. “We celebrate Christmas with the same zeal and zest in Karachi as we do in Canada. We make special dished and special new dresses for this occasion; embellish our houses with Xmas tree and all decors.” Said a student, Monica Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December all over the world in Catholic, Protestant and most Orthodox churches. It is a cultural and religious holiday for Christians abroad. But in Pakistan, the Christian employees get one day off for Xmas day.

In Karachi, Christmas is not celebrated in much different style. “We make shalwar Kamiz, lehnga, T shirt and skirts for the beautiful evening. We don’t copy western culture over here” said 18 year old Almas. The planting of the Christmas tree is the key of the festival. It is decorated with all colorful balls, twinkling lights, snow and little toys. The dazzling Christmas lights and lanterns crystallize the Christian community roads, shopping malls, buildings and shops. A pine tree is specifically used in the houses on the Christmas Eve which is crowned by a star. The special prayers are offered at night in the churches. The service in the churches is called Mass offered during 12 to 2 am on the Christmas Eve. This midnight mass is conducted in both English and Urdu languages. Joy and happiness is never complete without sharing gifts and presents. The exchange of gifts beautifies the celebration. Further, any aged member of the family wears the attire of Santa Claus and hides the packed gifts under the Christmas tree as a surprise for the kids and elders in the morning. Cake and Turkey are cooked specially for the evening. But like Eid, sheerkhorma and all the sweet dishes are also served. In the memorable evening, families sit together and descend the distance between them. After all the blazing and the blatant rejoicing celebration the Christmas comes to an end. They all gather again in the church and pray to God for a happy and beautiful life ahead.

Act of Kindness By Fahmina Arshad

By Kulsoom Zaidi

I am going to share an unforgettable incident of my life, which not only cemented my belief of helping others but also changed me as a person that I am. It was the most eventful day of my life when I received a letter from a prestigious American University asking me to appear before an interview board, in US Embassy Islamabad. I made all necessary preparation and reached Islamabad but against all my efforts I could not get any accommodation in the hotels which were economically in my reach and to make the matter worst I lost my wallet along with the interview letter. In a halfhearted belief, I called one of my old school’ friend. Her brother answered my call as she had gone last year to Australia for higher education. He picked me from the public call office in his car and lodged me for the night in his house. To my pleasant surprise, he told me that one of his friends is working in the US embassy. As I had lost my interview letter, he helped my entry in the embassy and also gave me useful tips for the interview. I can’t explain my joys when finally; I received a letter from the embassy about my selection.

My personality has always been inclined towards animals. I love everything about them and that is the reason why I have always been very particular about their care, food and healing. A never thought that a day in my life would come were I would have to apply my animal caring instinct. Not long ago, I was walking back to home from shopping and saw an injured cow struggling to move and stand up on its feet. A bunch of hungry vultures and crows were circulating around her, which was a scary sight. Her thirstiness was pretty obvious so I offered her some water and stayed there for a while. She lifted her head, looked me in the eyes and I could feel an expression of thankfulness. That was a moment of joy for me knowing that I helped a helpless being.

Arrival of December

“Ice and Spice and Everything is Nice--Under one Roof" By Hira Nazir

Lost in the gelid coolness, I found myself, In bewildered thoughts, Gathered by, Some numbed emotions, Few forsaken memories, Those burnt feelings, A dark gloomy vibe.

I, in my aimlessness, Sensed around, The mist so intense, The frost so piercing, The dew so fixed, The wind so sharp, Warmth of that ended love, Ashes of the broken trust, Lugubriousness of mislaid reminiscence, Sighs of despair, Hotness of the tea mug, Crisp of the crackers, Smoke of the fire, And warmth of the inside.

Though I, Being in senselessness, Heard the whisper of arrival, Arrival of my nostalgic chum; That dismal December, A lonesome December, My deserted December, Your chilling December. It came, Like a single figure, But with many sides.

Limelight! Global Entrepreneurship Week To discuss the reasons for low entrepreneurial activity in Pakistan, Center for International Private Enterprises (CIPE) organized a series of discussion forums in Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar and Lahore. Students from various universities were invited to these sessions and were given the opportunity to share their views. Over 175 students participated in these four events that were moderated by Mr. Hammad Siddiqui, Deputy Country Director who has a vast experience in this field. According to the students, the university education in Pakistan does not encourage them to consider entrepreneurial career as their course material is particularly based on entrepreneurial stories from the developed world, hence irrelevant to ground realities in Pakistan. They recommended that entrepreneurship curriculum should be revised and local start-up stories and case studies should be included. Discussion about non-availability of seed capital for start-up companies and requirement of collateral for obtaining credit from the banking channel were also highlighted as one of the biggest impediment in encouraging youth to start their businesses. All discussions revealed that female students are more creative and despite facing bigger challenges from families, they aren’t discouraged and are experimenting with mostly home-based businesses. Students recommended creation of mentorship club that could help them in improving their ideas, provide handholding during the process of establishing their businesses and also advise them in technical and legal matters. Celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week is a recent phenomenon in Pakistan and this year over 30 events were organized in all major cities of the country. It is hoped that continuation of such activities will result in better entrepreneurial environment in Pakistan. - Hammad Siddiqui

Review s Sky Fall: I can say, it was one of the best ‘Bond Movie’ ever! The performance of Daniel Craig aka James Bond is highly appreciated. It was the best way to conclude James Bond’s legacy. In terms of camera work I must give Ten out of Ten. Most likely it was a tough competition among some of the top gross movies like Christopher Nolan’s ‘Batman’, Twilight Breaking Dawn 2 and The Avengers. Skyfall is the highest grossing film worldwide for Sony pictures and the 3rd highest grossing movie of 2012. Opening chase scene in Casino instantly set the point for Craig's Bond and that’s what I liked the most. Goons were more athlete than Bond that was really appreciative. Bond used his cleverness to hold his own with an adversary who was more athletic. Skyfall is pretty much good film with such a good cast, remarkable moments, unforgettable action, impressive cinematography and much more! I would like to recommend the folks to watch this movie as one of the best movies of 2012. Sean Connery also has been performing as James Bond in the sequel and people also liked him besides Daniel did a great job after all. Both were much pretty much mature, dark and elegant. - Umair Jamil

SHEHR e ZAAT: “Tu wajood ki chah kyun karti hai zaat ki chah kar, zaat ki chah...!” This is one of the heart touching dialogue from Sarmad Sultan Khoosat‘s 18 episodes’ drama presentation of Umera Ahmed’s novel, SHEHR-E-ZAAT which is the moralistic, sentimental and spiritual production, aired on HUM TV. The drama’s basic idea comprises on the difference of human love and divine love and the wrong perception of human on different aspects of life Lead protagonist is Mahira khan who has done the role of Falak, considered as the personification of beauty and belongs to elite family and get everything what she even desires. The drama turns to its climax when she confronts her beloved husband (Salman)’s girlfriend (Tabinda) having an average personality and background. Then the old lost words of a stranger strikes her back that beauty is nothing. When ALLAH wants you to be loved, he can do this even if you have nothing. Human love is mortal but divine love lasts long and never leaves you. This incident takes her towards The Creator and shows her true destiny. In the play, Falak’s nani (Samina Perzada) helps her to ride out the poignant situations and throughout the drama; her dialogues are extremely inspiring and treasuring. At last, the girl who was once lost in worldly desire came to know the real meaning of life and live accordingly. In the end, Tabinda’s reality is recognized by Salman when she runs off taking all the valuables. Salman realized his mistakes and comes back to Falak and drama concludes with the happy ending but here the happiness is beyond the worldly gratification, it is the inner contentment and divine love. – Saima Jawed

Book Reviews

You can close your eyes to the things you don’t want to see, but you can’t close your heart to the thing you don’t want to feel. The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks is one the longest and much different novel I have read. This is the first fiction work of Nicholas about relationship where the circle of love revolves among father, daughter and her first love. Uniqueness in the tale is that there is no victory and defeat in love but gain and care for relations in the end. 17 years old, Veronica Miller (Ronnie) is graduated from High School. She hates her father who left them three year ago. She has not spoken to her father since three years and becomes furious when her mother forces her to stay with her father. She isn’t interested to dwell in a beach house with her father who is a piano teacher who taught her how to play but since he left, she had decided not to play piano ever again. Ronnie arrives at her dad house in an unpleasant mood. Including piano, she dislikes every single object existed in the beach house. In the beach town carnival she meets a local volleyball player, Will to which she falls in love. In the novel, it is deeply felt how Ronnie is stuck between the earlier world of her family and a new world of friends and romance. Events take place in life which makes Ronnie closer to her father and brother. Veronica’s life can easily be related to our own life. It’s the story about how deeply felt relationships can break hearts, also how they are healed. This classic story of love is surrounded by fear, grief and happiness. – Sobia Abdul Razzaq "The security of the world is on stake, the largest computer is invented to break codes, known to the history of earth but cannot break a complex code, and the national security is at odds. What will you do?" A complete pulse quickening story from the start, a complete thriller that involves the reader into the story, considering themselves to be a part of it, the story begins with the introduction of the beautiful cryptographer Susan Fletcher's romance with a language professor David Becker, the story then takes a twist when suddenly David is asked to do a job for the national security. On the other hand, a Crippled man Ensei Tankado who is the threat to the national security and has written the Digital Fortress, The unbreakable Code and then he is found dead. This is where the twist and turns take place because Ensei has left a ring which can save the World with a complicated and deceptive plot laid out. This book is intriguing in every manner. With chicanery and humor, Dan Brown shows a substantial amount of subplots that are all a part of the process that lead to the simple, surprising and positively brilliant ending. There is no doubt on the capabilities of Dan Brown after The Da-Vinci Code and now this is another mind blowing treat for all the science fiction lovers around the world. A MUST READ for all those who are Dan Brown fans! – Roman Ahmed So Now “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who will guard the guards?”
