Hey Readers! Hope you are fine and shining just like the sun that is sparkling on our heads in full bloom. It’s almost after two months Identity is back with its 6 th issue, wholly dedicated to Mother’s day, Labor’s day and Father’s day. As you all know, Identity Magazine is an effort of students, we were busy in our educational priorities but now we are back!

Noor-ul-Ain Hanif

As this issue is devoted to universally recognized days and among them Labor Day is the most significant one. Therefore, the cover story is covering all the hardships and issue faced by the laborers in Pakistan, working in-house or out-house. Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “Give me good mothers and I shall give you a good nation."All Mothers are the cradlers of human personality but there are some mothers who are the cradlers of nations and cause of social development. Therefore, the feature is all about the mothers making history. Today’s hard work is tomorrow’s relief. This statement is proven right by the successful laborers, who have spent their initial days in darkness and are now enjoying a bright future. Lincoln and Messi’s life story is among them.

Labor

Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers. Labor Day has its origins from the labor union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. International Workers' Day is the commemoration of the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. May Day was formally recognized as an annual event at the International's second congress in 1891. Every year on May 1st, Labor Day is celebrated in order to pay respect and recognize the efforts of people working day and night to fulfill their basic needs such as; food, clothing and shelter. This day is especially marked for labor working on daily wages in factories etc, household labor, and very importantly child labor. On this day, rallies and processions take place all over the world by Labor Unions, NGO’s and civil society. This gives people a chance to raise their voice against the problems faced by different types of labor for e.g. extensive workload, low wages, fewer benefits from employers such as; medical, bonuses etc. Sometimes employers do not even provide perks and benefits to their labor. Pakistan became a member of the International Labor Organization (ILO) right after its independence in 1947. The ILO is a United Nations (UN) specialized agency that promotes social justice and universally acknowledged human and social rights. Pakistan has ratified 36 ILO conventions of which eight are core conventions. Pakistan’s first labor policy was devised in 1972, in which May 1 was declared an official holiday.

But despite of this, in Pakistan, the labor force was estimated at 40.4 million in 2002. Some 70% of rural residents engage in agricultural pursuits. Unemployment and underemployment are major problems and was officially 6.3% in 2001, which has frequently gone as high as 25%.

Child Labor: According to the constitution of Pakistan, Article 25a reads: “The state shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of 5-16 years in such manner as may be determined by law.” Pakistan’s Constitution expressly prohibits the employment of children below the age of fourteen years in any factory, mine or other hazardous employment. In addition, the constitution makes it a Principle Policy of the State of Pakistan to protect the child, to remove illiteracy and provide free and compulsory education within the minimum possible period and to make provision for securing just and human conditions of work, ensuring that children and women are not employed in vocations unsuited to their age or sex. But ironically, up to 10 million children are estimated to be working in Pakistan. The latest government figures showing three million child laborers date back to 1996, underscoring how scant attention has been paid to documenting the problem, which is likely to get worse given the makeup of the fast-growing population. According to UNICEF, up to 10million children are estimated to be working in Pakistan. The number keeps increasing day by day because of poverty and population growth. . mechanic workshops, stores, factories or selling different things on streets and publics buses. A lot of children work as domestic helpers or maids as well. These children are forced to do difficult work and if not done properly, they often face physical or mental torture, important point to be noticed here is that the majority of these children are also harassed at their work places. This is an alarming situation for our society and parents who are sending their children to any sort of work place. Though child labor is strictly condemned by NGO’s and civil society in Pakistan, the problem is that the whole industry has moved into private homes, which has made it a bit difficult to monitor if child labor is being used. Along with that, the government is not taking any serious step to prevent it.

Household Labor: Next in line is household labor i.e. maids or domestic helpers. In Pakistan there are large numbers of families who use household labor to help them in their daily chore for e.g. cleaning, laundry, cooking etc. Women are mostly preferred over men when it comes to hiring domestic help because a woman can easily perform household chores whereas men are usually kept as drivers, gardeners or watchmen. In Pakistan, we have many cases of domestic helpers being raped, tortured, beaten and sometimes killed. The

media does follow and highlight such incidents but after sometime, they stop reporting it as the story doesn’t remain timely anymore. More pressure is needed to be put on the government of Pakistan and internal human rights organizations to make strict laws regarding the rights and duties of household labors and work closely together in order to protect all citizens who suffer such blatant cruelty.

Old-aged Labor: In United States, Canada and different European countries, people after 60 years of age retire and spend the rest of their lives with their families while the government takes care of their expenses including medical, transportation, social security etc. Old age in Pakistan was once regarded as symbol of family bonding but now it has become a curse. Here senior citizens who are in their 60’s, 70’s and also 80’s work day and night to fulfill their basic needs and still live a hand to mouth life. Old people lift heavy weights, sell things either by roaming or sitting on footpaths under the scorching sun, work overtime in factories, rolling on the streets begging for a piece of bread etc. These tough jobs are supposed to be done by young and energetic people, but these poor old souls have to do it to feed their children at least twice a day. Unfortunately there is no law regarding old people working. Though there are old age benefit programs present but only for those who have been in government service only.

The problems faced by all kinds of laborers today can only be solved if there are strict laws, rules and regulations, not just for the sake of being in the constitution and books of laws, but to be imposed and implemented by the government. If the government isn’t giving rights to its people, then is the time for Media, NGO’s, civil society and general public to raise their voices against this injustice.

Mothers making history!

Upon hearing the word “radioactivity”, all we could think of is rough and tough men working under an old professor who have no life of his own. What we do not know is that the word itself was coined by a female known as Marie Curie. Born on 7th of November, 1867 in Warsaw, she till date is the only person to win two Nobel awards in chemistry and physics. Marie Curie, also known as Madame Curie, formed the theory of radioactivity. Not only this, but she is also the reason of Polonium and Radium’s presence in the Periodic Table. All her life, she exceeded beyond expectations, challenged this world and showed that even a mother can do spectacular things. Her life may seem a little sour to us, but the fact is that she is an inspiration for all of us.

By Yasir Ahmed Qureshi

Motherhood is a tangible feeling, an unbreakable bond, and a force behind every success. It shapes our lives and personalities so crediting it for the same is something one should do at every given opportunity. Looking back to the history, we will witness a number of selfless and determined women who have changed the course of history once and for all. The creation of Pakistan has been widely associated with the efforts of Quaid-e-Azam, Allama Iqbal and other male members of the independence movement. All of this is true actually but the role played by the females is not something to be missed as well. They were an integral part of creating our homeland and worked shoulder-to-shoulder along with the men.

Bi Amma

Bi Amma, the mother of great and valorous heroes Maulana Mohmmed Ali Johar and Maulana Shaukat Ali Johar was an inspiration for housewives. Her real name was Abadi Bano Begum who became a widow at the age of 30 years. Though she was not herself educated, but she realized the value of higher education for Muslims of the subcontinent. She sold her jewelry and other ornaments so her sons could get quality education and do something worthwhile for their nation. Bi Amma was also an active member of All India Muslim League and used to deliver speeches in the league sessions. During the session of 1917, she gave a heart rendering speech which had a lasting effect on the Muslims of subcontinent as her popularity rose to its peak after that session. When both of her sons were jailed because of being a part of Khilafat Movement, she toured the whole country and addressed large number of people to keep the fervor of Khilafat Movement alive. She even wrote a couplet which became a house-hold slogan at that time. She died on November 13, 1924 but left behind a legacy and a symbol of hope for other mothers of coming decades.

Marie Curie

We praise our mothers every now and then but we forget to praise the woman who was the mother of every suffering child of this world. She was the symbol of hope, love, positivity and kindness. There are not enough adjectives in English language to describe the great Mother Teresa. In 1910 when the first Father’s Day was celebrated, no one knew that a chapter of future was being written down. Born on 27th August, 1910, Mother Teresa founded Missionaries of Charity in 1950 and soon became a ray of hope and a beacon of light for poor and less privileged in India. She was one of those generous people that God sends very rarely for amelioration of human world. Sacrificing her young life for the suffering, she continued till her soul left her body. That unlucky day, September 5, 1997 world suffered an irreplaceable lost. She led a life that should inspire us all and it’s our duty to not forget her legacy and follow her steps. In that way, world would be a little better place to live in.

The dedication, hard work and patience, the above mentioned ladies have shown is mesmerizing. The only difference between our mothers and Bi Amma, Marie Curie, Mother Teresa is that apart from their family they thought about the welfare of the society as well. But nevertheless, all the mothers share the same kind of love, passion and tolerance towards their children which makes this relationship the best in the world.

Journey to triumph Kulsoom Zaidi

Majority of the great achievements in the fields of Science, History, Art and Culture, have been accomplished by people who believed in hard work. There are many trials and tribulations in life and being persistence is one of the most important keys to achieve ones’ goals. Often, people sinking in emotions due to surrounding circumstances of life but don’t make it tough. It is the basic point because only courageous people can maintain their level of patience satisfaction and happiness even in the most discouraging situations. If we look in our surroundings, we will find many people who, despite of heavy odds, can be taken as an examples of dignity for others and for themselves too. Following are some inspirational stories about two such people who tackled all kinds of circumstances and hit the golden chest at the end.

A Lincoln story: Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States guided his country through the most devastating experience in its national history, called the Civil War. He is considered as the greatest American president by many historians. Many people may have this idea that he belonged from a well-established family but this is not true. His family was poor and during his childhood, he used to help his father at the farm. At the tender age of nine, his mother passed away and because of that, the whole set-up of his household was badly disturbed. He didn’t get a chance to go to school very often but he was really fond of reading and was found reading a book whenever he got a chance. When he was 21 years old, his family moved to Illinois where

he planned of turning over a new leaf and doing something meaningful with his life. For that, he worked on farm till he got enough money to open his own store. Because of his honesty and gentleman characteristics, the citizens of Illinois trusted him and later elected him to help make the laws for the state. With his hard work, he earned an LLB degree and became the president of United States at the age of 51. Saving the Union, freeing the slaves and their martyrdom, just at the end of the war, assured his growing fame. No small contribution was made by his eloquence as exemplified in the Gettysburg Address in which he defined the war as a rededication to the egalitarian ideals of the Declaration of Independence, urged malice toward none and charity for all.

A Messi story:

18 I IDENTITY MAG

One of the most successful sportsmen in the world today is Lionel Messi, an Argentine footballer who plays for La Liga club FC Barcelona and is the current captain of the Argentina national team, playing mainly as a forward. Even if someone doesn’t know him by his name, they could still recognize him through his pictures on magazine cover pages, billboard, television etc. Inspite of being only 24 years old, he is ranked among the world's richest footballers with £29.6 million as the estimated net worth of his wealth.

Along with that, he was awarded the Golden Ball by Brazilian legend Ronaldo because of his absolutely breathtaking season with 53 goals and 24 assists for Barcelona, 4 goals for Argentina, a Spanish Super Cup, a La Liga and a UEFA Champions League title. But, all this didn’t come on a silver platter. Instead he had to go through hardships to reach this pinnacle of stardom. He used to serve tea at a shop to support his football training. Later, at the age of 11, he was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency. Obviously it was clear that he was a very talented player, but due to his condition, it was not likely that he would ever get an entry into the national football team. Local powerhouse River Plate showed interest in Messi's progress, but did not have enough money to pay for treatment for his condition. Carles Rexach, the sporting director of FC Barcelona had been made aware of his talent and he offered Messi a contract written on a paper napkin. Barcelona offered to pay for Messi's medical bills if he was willing to move to Spain. Messi and his father moved to Barcelona where Messi enrolled in the club's youth academy and from there on, his journey toward fame and success got on a roll. “Poverty is not the hindrance to success” is a very famous quote which gives out a message that focusing our lives solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition because it's only when we hitch our wagon to something larger than ourselves that is when we realize our true potential. Besides these two stories, there are many more about people who worked hard, gave it their all, and eventually became successful. These stories inspire us to reach our goal and overcome every obstacle because hard work is a beacon of light and the rest will fall in the right places automatically.

I am better me By Syed Omer Ahmer This muddy street is my ground These bricks are my wickets This broken bat is all I own I don’t crave for anything For I am happy with what I have For I am not a Baron Rothschild Who needs a stadium to play? Who requires delicious meals thirty times a day? I am just a slum child Who is here to play?

Things to-do on Father’s Day! Fun time at a picnic BBQ on the Beach Shop till you drop Karaoke on an old hit Have an epic meal time Reading a book together Give him a sassy makeover Take him out to the movies Arrange a little competition Rock and Roll on funky beats Plan the ultimate camping trip Take a stroll down memory lane

My life started with miseries Hunger cradled me And poverty grew me up It rolls with little happy moments With a little bat in my hand And a chum in sight I swing my bat with all might I love to see the ball soaring high in the sky Going out of sight I don’t crave for anything For I am happy with what I have For I am not a Baron Rothschild I am just a slum child I cheer with my dears They smile, I laugh They tease, I please We scream and dream I wish, someday I would eat an ice cream That’s my little life, little moments Little memories, which save me from torments Still, I don’t crave for anything I am happy with what I have I am not a Baron Rothschild For I am, just a slum child
