A panel at the upcoming South By Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, will bring together Mark Holden, general counsel and vice president at Wichita-based Koch Industries Inc., and hip hop star Snoop Dogg.

The March 18 panel will be on the topic of criminal justice reform and will be hosted by the Charles Koch Institute, whose senior fellow for criminal justice reform, Vikrant Reddy, will also be a member.

So too, will be the panel’s focus, Weldon Angelos, whose own case drew the attention of Koch and others involved in the bipartisan effort to reform the federal justice system.

also appear with Snoop Dogg — a friend and colleague of Angelos — in a documentary about Angelos’ case, in which the first-time nonviolent offender received a 55-year sentence under federal minimum sentencing laws in 2002 for selling marijuana.

Angelos, whose case attracted national attention, was released last year after a federal judge granted an immediate reduction to his sentence.

The Charles Koch Institute says on its website that the panel, titled “Artist to Advocate: Fighting for Criminal Justice,” will give participants the chance “speak directly to the music community, detailing how artists can work together to achieve lasting reform.”

Angelos, a music producer and founder of Extravagant Records in Utah, collaborated with Snoop Dogg on music projects prior to his sentencing in 2002.

WICHITA ENTREPRENEUR DEVELOPS JOGGING STROLLER THAT’S NEARING PRODUCTION Mike Dresher’s effort to bring an ergonomic jogging stroller to market has been a lesson in persistence.

Dresher, a Wichita mechanical design engineer turned entrepreneur, is preparing to launch a crowd-source campaign for JogAlong Stroller LLC, an effort already more than 10 years in the making.

Prototypes for Dresher’s patented JogAlong Stroller have been developed.

The stroller was designed to mimic a person’s natural running or walking motion by incorporating movable arms rather than a stationary bar for pushing, an upper-body exercise machine.

the supply chain for the stroller parts and where it will be manufactured. Those determinations, he says, also will allow him to set the price for the stroller and finalize crowd sourcing.

“We really feel like we’re going to create a new category with the stroller,” he says.

“It’s going to be a premium product.”

He’s targeting a price point in the $800 to $1,200 range, though it likely will be closer to the higher end.

Dresher has been developing the product but has enlisted local businesses to help with promotional materials.

In a year likely to be defined by major regulatory, economic and geopolitical change, what new opportunities and challenges could CFOs face – and how can they help their organizations adapt and succeed?

Increasing role of data analytics and

artificial intelligence As specialized technology, more sophisticated data analytics, and even artificial intelligence systems become widely available, CFOs will be able to harness these tools to provide decision-making support through real-time reporting, predictive forecasting, and more accurate analytics.

These tools also offer the opportunity to relieve accounting and finance staff from routine transactional functions. As Thack Brown, global head of line of Business Finance at SAP, said in a Dec. 2016 Forbes interview, “The time once spent balancing books is now spent interpreting and proving valuable insights.”

Demand for IT and data analytics skills On the flip side, these new technologies also represent a broad area in which many CFOs have insufficient training or knowledge. Rather than gloss over the possibilities these tools can deliver as “an IT project,” CFOs must invest in partnerships with their CIOs. By identifying data available and easily accessi-

ble, pinpointing what indicators are most important to which aspects of the company’s operations, and using the data to support sound business decisions, the CFO’s role becomes less about reporting on the state of the business and more about helping make strategic decisions about the business.

Rise of cybersecurity threats 3A Dec. 2016 CFO Magazine survey reported that CFOs saw cyberthreats as the number three risk for 2017 – behind economic conditions and regulatory changes. While the first two may be largely outside a CFO’s control, cyberthreats are a risk which can be managed, if not entirely mitigated. Again, this is not “an IT issue” – but a risk to the business’ or organization’s reputation, proprietary information and even its ongoing operation. Here are questions every CFO should answer to begin addressing and managing cybersecurity: •What information do we manage?

•What are our key business assets?

•What connections do our people and systems have?

•Are we identifying and addressing our risks?

•What is our ability to mitigate risks?

•How are we managing third parties?

•What capacities should we retain internally vs. work with external resources?

On the surface, each of these 2017 challenges seems a technological one. In truth, each is simply a reflection of the CFO’s increasingly critical roles in interpreting available data, providing strategic insight, and protecting the organization’s invaluable assets. Kapoor a key component of Spirit’s financial transformation

S

pirit AeroSystems Inc. is evolving with a focus on cost reduction and cash flow generation.

Strides made on those fronts have allowed Wichita’s largest employer to invest more than $1.1 billion in capital projects to modernize its factories and execute a $47 million backlog more efficiently. The company repurchased 14.2 million shares for $650 million in 2016, creating a return value for shareholders in the process.

Last year, the company also initiated its first quarterly dividend of 10 cents per share.

And Sanjay Kapoor has been an important component of those efforts.

As Spirit’s senior vice president and chief financial officer, Kapoor is responsible for the overall financial management of the company, its financial reporting and transparency. The company’s controller, treasury and investor relations functions also fall under his purview. He also works with Spirit’s contracts and estimating team on customer negotiations and bidding new work.

Kapoor is heavily involved in setting company strategy and ensuring execution.

“We still have work to do and our focus on continuous improvement is never ending,” he says.

Former Spirit CEO Larry Lawson recruited Kapoor to the company in 2013 amid financial challenges, which resulted in a $1 billion loss charged over a series of quarters.

Kapoor worked with company leadership to bring more structure and a cost-conscious approach to Spirit’s finances.

But that is also part of what makes Knott’s work as CFO for Ruffin Holdings Inc., where she has been 17 years, so enjoyable.

ifeTeam has experienced significant growth since its inception in 2001, and COO/CFO Melissa Knott has been there for all of it.

Graduating from Wichita State with a degree in business, her first career was in commercial real estate. She also had an interest in aviation, having worked on her pilot’s license in college. About 25 years ago, she began working in the aviation field with Midwest Corporate Aviation at Jabara Airport, where the air ambulance program was managed. That project ended in 2001, and LifeTeam was founded the same year.

“I was fortunate to be at the table for the initial discussions prior to the start up of LifeTeam,” Knott says. “Those discussions centered around how to build the best critical care transport company in the country. From its inception, LifeTeam was designed to serve as a healthcare provider, safely utilizing air and ground vehicles in its practice of transport medicine. The entire company is built around caring for our patients and my job is to facilitate and provide the support necessary to ensure safe, high quality, compassionate care for the patients we serve.”

Knott oversees aviation operations, maintenance facility and operations, the billing department, communication center, and logistics for the medical team, as well as manages a team of directors. She is also responsible for all business functions, including HR, membership and payroll, and works closely with the owners of the company for strategic forecasting and financial planning.

She also served as the controller for Pizza Hut co-founder Frank Carney and, later, as CFO for Sterling House Corp. where she helped develop and finance 282 assisted living facilities.

She was also part of the team that took Sterling public and, when it later merged with Alterra Healthcare, she became CFO of its BCI Inc. construction division.

In 2000, ready to return to the private sector, she joined Ruffin Holdings as CFO. Since that time, she has been involved in numerous high-profile deals, with responsibility to the organization for cash management, financing activities, lender relations, operational reviews, risk management, employee benefits, tax planning and more.

Even more recently, the Wichita State Graduate accepted a position on the WSU Barton School of Business Dean’s Advisory Council.

There is, indeed, never a dull moment when working for Phil Ruffin, says Jon Cyphert, director of real estate for Ruffin Properties.

But it’s exactly that type of environment that has allowed her to leverage her ability to handle whatever comes her way to the benefit of the business.

“With an ever-changing organization such as Ruffin Companies, Gail has the agility required to transition

back and forth from one project to another without any detriment to either,” he says.

He also says she leads by example and does the little things as well as the big ones that are required of her financial department. “(She) has been known to close a very large loan, then turn around and help her staff insert W-2s into envelopes,” Cyphert says.

It’s a staff with very little turnover, and one, he says, that serves as a credit to her ability to create a team.

For her part, Knott is quick to offer that staff credit for any success she may achieve.

And that help makes deals like Treasure Island — no matter how quickly they arise and are acted upon by the boss — go off smoothly.

“When you work on a project like that, you feel like you have really accomplished something,” she says.

Patrick Kraus has always been fascinated by finance

P

atrick Kraus first discovered finance in high school.

Today, he’s putting that longtime interest to work as the chief financial officer of lubrication Engineers, a successful and growing Wichita Business.

“I remember taking a high school accounting class and realizing that there is far more than meets the eye in understanding the finances of a business,” he recalls.

The result has been a key spot on the LE leadership team, says Scott Schwindaman, the company’s president and CEO. “He has been a tremendous asset to LE during his tenure,” Schwindaman says.

“I interviewed many high level CFO’s in Wichita when looking for our new CFO over a decade ago. I hired Pat because he was the only one that understood manufacturing accounting and the culture of LE.” One example is the successful negotiation with a foreign company to locate in Wichita.

“He was instrumental in negotiating the joint venture with Kyodo Yushi to successfully land their new plant in the Wichita area,” Schwindaman says.

“Negotiations with a foreign entity are extremely complex and he handles it with superior skill. He is also actively involved in other ventures that LE is currently working on to bring economic development to the Wichita region.”

I have continued with professional continuing education each year so that I can stay current with evolving accounting practices and regulations. I have also studied and passed coursework related to our specif-

ic industry so that I can further understand our business, which aids in decision making and driving profits.”

It’s helped create a career Kraus loves.

Greg Rowe focuses on people at Shelley Electric

T

he one constant in business is change.

Greg Rowe, CFO at Shelley Electric Inc., says that means successful businesses must also have leaders that adapt to change.

It’s something, he says, that takes constant effort.

“You never know for certain what you’ll be doing from one day to the next,” Rowe says. “This requires good time management and flexibility. For me personally, it’s always a challenge to keep an open mind and not continue to do things the way they have always been done.”

That approach has equaled longevity for Rowe, who has served as CFO at Shelley since 1986.

And the ability to incorporate new ideas and technology helps Rowe to keep providing the resources the business needs to remain competitive.

Rowe says one of his biggest projects — and one that will have the biggest impact on the business — is the ongoing implementation of a new accounting software system.

“We’re currently in the midst of that, and I’m rapidly learning how complex and time consuming this process really is,” he says.

But if there is anybody who can handle it, says Shelley’s president, Doug Hague, it’s Rowe.

Hague has been at the company all of Rowe’s 31 years there, and says he has proved over and over just how valuable an asset he is to the Shelley team.

advantage to our entire office,” Hague says. “He put this skill set to work in order to help Shelley Electric remain competitive and profitable.”

What’s more, Hague says, Rowe is a “true team player” who always gets the best out of other employees at the company.

Melding those skills with the ability to adapt to change in the profession, has enabled Rowe to keep the company ahead

of the curve.

And he has seen plenty of change during his time as a CFO. “There is so much more paperwork, documentation, compliance requirements (and more) that didn’t exist when I started this job,” Rowe says.

That work, however, hasn’t kept Rowe from also being able to devote attention to the community around him.

A long list of community involvement

includes his time as a former member of the USD 259 Bond Oversight Committee, a past member and treasurer of the Northwest high School Booster Club, his current membership on the Wichita Crime Commission, the Air Capital Cosmopolitan and continued work on a variety of boards and committees at his church.

That involvement helps Rowe double-down on what he says is one of the biggest rewards of his work — the people he gets to interact with.

His advice to anyone starting out in finance?

“Focus more on people, relationships and communication and less on the numbers,” Rowe says. “Your career is only a part of your life and should be balanced with God, family and social life.”

complexities of nonprofit funding streams Pettera led the efforts to relocate three of the organization’s workforce centers, including moving in 2014 from downtown Wichita to the New Leaf Plaza near 21st Street North and Amidon.

In each case, he led procurement, lease negotiations, IT installation and made arrangements with moving companies.

Pettera also is tasked with staffing the finance committee that reports to the Workforce Alliance’s board of directors and providing necessary information to fulfill those obligations.

Pettera joined the Workforce Alliance in 2005 after three years as a state employee.

He says implementing a paperless records system has been the biggest change during his tenure at the Workforce Alliance.

It’s a process — already more than a year in the making — he is overseeing.

Outside of work, he is active in the community, including volunteering with the Greater Wichita YMCA and Maize USD 266. He also serves on the board of directors for the South Central Kansas Economic Development District, a nonprofit organization that advocates for regional economic development.

Pettera regularly participates in community events to benefit other nonprofit organizations, such as the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure and the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Walk. He also contributes to the annual fundraising campaign for the United Way of the Plains He and his wife, Erin, have two children, Clayton, 15, and Tyler, 11.

Alzheimer’s work hits home for Dyana Schaefer

W

hen Dyana Schaefer accepted the position of office manager at the Alzheimer’s Association 16 years ago, there were only four full-time employees. At the time, she knew little about finance but learned as she went.

“I loved figuring out how the numbers fit together and what made up the quarterly reports,” she says.

Eventually, she went back to school at WSU to complete her degree in accounting and graduated in 2009 with a bachelor’s in business administration.

“Over the time I’ve been here, our revenue has more than doubled,” she says. “I have also played an integral part in our Blondes vs. Brunettes RivALZ event with 25 percent growth annually for four years, raising a total of $92,000. I’ve built a number of relationships in the community throughout my time here, and those relationships continue to prove incredibly vital in helping us secure financial support and volunteers.”

RivALZ is a flag football game to inspire fundraising, awareness and action in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

“Over the past four years, I’ve had so much fun participating in this game and meeting ladies who I’m still close with,” she says. “But also this fundraiser is close to my heart because my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease this past summer. I play for him and hopefully finding a survivor of this disease some day.”

According to Schaefer, the biggest challenge of the association is how to double revenue so it can continue to advocate on

“Every 66 seconds, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease,” she says. “By mid-century, this will change to 33 seconds. We must continue to bring awareness about this disease with early detection and diagnosis so that it’s not too late for good care.”

Schaefer’s responsibilities at the Association include reviewing, developing and monitoring financial controls,

including yearly budgeting. She also provides financial analysis to members of the senior management team as well as the board.

“My responsibilities working at a nonprofit are the same as a for-profit company, but it’s much harder to predict revenue, so controlling expenses is critical,” Schaefer says. “It’s important as an organization that we ensure there are enough profits to continue funding our mission and making a difference in the

community.”

Board member Doug Stark has known Dyana since she started at the Association. “My expectation of a CFO is a person who has a good knowledge of the numbers and how they play in the big picture of the health of an organization,” Stark says. “Dyana has not only been in charge of all the financial aspects of the organization, but also filled in wearing almost every other hat there is at the Association.”

“It feels good to not just be thought of as a numbers cruncher, but one who is making a vital contribution as a strategic leader and advisor,” Schaefer says.

Numbers took Schrag from banking to health care

J

erol Schrag admits he’s happy being a numbers man.

“I’ve always been intrigued by numbers and making things ‘balance,’” says Schrag, CFO at Bluestem Communities. “This quickly led me to a career in accounting. I also enjoy collaborating with people and strategic planning. My passion for helping people led me to banking and now long-term care in a nonprofit.”

The beneficiary has been Bluestem, where Schrag has been for almost three years.

Just prior to his hiring, Schowalter Villa in Hesston and Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton merged to become one of the largest life plan communities in the Wichita marketplace. Schrag took those changes in stride, says James Krehbiel, the Bluestem CEO. “Bringing these corporations together has been a tremendous undertaking and Jerol has done a fantastic job, especially given the fact that he was learning a new industry at the same time,” Krehbiel says.

Part of that traces to Schrag’s desire to learn.

“After graduating with majors in business administration and accounting from Bethel College, I continued my learning while in the banking profession. An opportunity arose from one of my continuing education classes and I had a chance to be part of a de novo bank in Wichita, RelianzBank. While there, I started the Graduate School of Banking in Colorado and graduated in the top 10 percent of my class.

“There are many aspects to finance in which you can go; personal finance, investments, banking, accounting, etc.,” he says. “As a CFO, finance is also about solving problems and looking towards the future for your organization. I enjoy brainstorming with people on how we can make our organization better but I also enjoy ‘looking into the numbers’ to see if it makes sense. This combination makes certain that no two days ever look the same for me in my organization.”

fit for me and my personality.”

He applied that foundation at the college level on his way toward obtaining bachelor’s degree in accounting from Kansas State University.

Away from work, Shank is active with church activities and fundraisers. He has coached his daughters’ sports teams and has been involved in school projects and fundraisers as well.

He lives in Hutchinson and commutes to Wichita for work.

Shank and his wife, Debbie, have three daughters.

Courtney is 25, Olivia, 16 and Isabelle, 14.

He enjoys working on cars and projects around the house.

“His energy doesn’t stop when he leaves the museum,” Luth says.

David Todd focuses on employees at APT

A

s a growing organization, Advanced Physical Therapy keeps owner David Todd busy.

The business has 179 employees and, when adding in three clinics recently sold that APT still provides management for, more than 200 people work under its umbrella.

But consider, too, that he is also the business’ CFO and it becomes clear just how much is on his table.

“I do a little bit of everything,” he says.

“Juggling it all can be a challenge, but it’s also fun.”

Keeping things running smoothly, he says, is as much a result of the people and managers he has on staff. Ensuring they have what they need to do their jobs, Todd says, drives the patient relationships and outcomes that are vital to his business.

“Patients see better outcomes ... it all trickles down,” he says.

It has led to continued success for a business that first formed as an idea during conversations some 12 years ago with business partner Brad Dopps.

“It has been fast and furious growth since the first meeting that David and I had to discuss the concept of creating a new physical therapy company,” Dopps says.

The growth, Dopps says, has presented its share of challenges along the way.

Todd says he has long leaned on Dopps and fellow partner in APT, Derry Larson, for their insight into the keys to success.

Lessons from Dad led Starkey’s Wiesner to finance

on Wiesner is the guy who makes things happen at Starkey.

The CFO has parlayed an unconventional start in finance into a key spot on Starkey’s leadership team.

“I developed my interest in finance from watching my dad,” he says. “He was a very successful farmer and businessman but a master at financial management. That appealed to me.

Also, accountants and finance professionals were trusted advisors, held in high esteem. That also appealed to me. I love working with numbers, doing analytical work.”

His boss, CEO Colin McKenney, loves having him at Starkey.

“Don has a can-do approach. We are always working to live within the resources available to us, but he doesn’t typically let resources shut down the conversation of what our company needs to do,” McKenney says.

The result is a great job at a great and meaningful organization that Wiesner says he enjoys.

Area conventions and events expect larger draws in 2017

It could be a busy year for events and conventions in the Wichita area this year, as multiple organizations project increased attendance for their showcase offerings in 2017.

According to the list of largest area conventions and events on page 24, ranked on estimated 2017 attendance, the Top 5 events forecast a combined year-overyear increase of about 19,000 people.

Overall, the combined forecast attendance of this year’s Top 25 is around 2 percent higher than the same forecast given to the WBJ by event directors and coordinators in 2016.

One of the largest individual gains on the list could come from Music Theatre Wichita’s 2017 Summer Season.

Wayne Bryan, producing artistic director of Music Theatre Wichita, says attendance from 2015 to 2016 jumped from 65,000 to 76,000 thanks to an extra week of performances of its presentation of “Mamma Mia.” Byran expects more potential gains in

2017, with a series of big name shows that will be highlighted in August by Disney’s “Newsies.”

And attendees, he says, will be getting some of the best performances money

can buy.

“Disney has ended up working with us pretty closely the last several years now,” he says. “We’re one of the few (regional theaters) that creates our own shows. It

makes us a unique place for young performers and technicians to come and build up their resumes.”

Wichita’s largest annual event, Riverfest, forecasts 2017 attendance of 455,000 — which would be the same as the final tally it reported for 2016, a number that bested its forecast for the WBJ’s 2016 list by 5,000 people.

Another event on the list, the Wichita Farm and Ranch Show, which is put on

by Tradexpos Inc., expects an attendance increase as it moves to a new venue for the first time.

Organizers are projecting attendance of 22,000 as the three-day convention in December will this year be held on the grounds at the Kansas Star Casino near Mulvane after a long run at the former Kansas Coliseum.

Show director Fred Cline says that even though there will be less space for the event at the new location, there is a buzz already surrounding it being at the Kansas Star.

“It has generated a lot of excitement and enthusiasm,” Cline says. “We anticipate having it there for the foreseeable future.”

Local leaders stress the power of taking chances at WBJ women’s event

Susie Santo still remembers the advice of a mentor early in her career when the opportunity to take on something new for her employer came along.

As often comes with opportunity, there was also risk.

What if she wasn’t up to the job?

What if stepping out of her comfort zone backfired?

But then she heard them — words from a leader that have stuck with her ever since.

“If not you, who?” Santo said. “I think those are some of the most powerful words I’ve ever heard.”

Santo was among the local leaders on the panel for the Wichita Business Journal’s Women to Women event, which drew around 200 people to Abode Venue on Thursday morning.

Santo, president and CEO of Visit Wichita, was joined on the panel by Shelly Prichard, president and CEO of the Wichita Community Foundation; Mar-

garet Dechant, CEO of financial advisory firm 6 Meridian; and Michelle De La Isla, diversity and inclusion representative at Westar Energy.

In Santo’s experience, taking that chance paid off and the project she was put in charge of turned out to be a success.

It was a lesson similar to something each of the panelists had discovered through their respective careers.

De La Isla said saying “yes” to new opportunities and challenges has been one of the dominant themes of her career and her life.

“And my life has been a book of opportunities,” she said.

Sometimes opportunity can come out of stagnation.

When asked about what to do when you’re feeling like you have plateaued, panelists said it can be an opportunity to move on to the next challenge.

But it doesn’t always mean moving to a new job.

Dechant said it can be helpful to do some introspection about why you’re feeling that way — and then have the courage to ask those around you for advice on

how to reinvigorate yourself.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” she said.

The same is true when going through a failure, panelists said. But, they said, if you use them as a learning opportunity and lean on others to help you make sure you learn everything you can from them, then sometimes failures can turn out to be blessings in disguise.

Other themes the panelists spoke on Thursday included the ever-elusive goal of work-life balance.

One of the best ways to come as close to balance as you can get, Dechant said, was to truly be present in every moment.

If you’re on the job — be on the job. If you’re at the dinner table, put the phone down and be in that moment.

Prichard said life invariably has busy seasons. She also stressed that managers — who she said need to always be consistent and fair — must help those around them find their own balances.

If she sends a worker an email in the middle of the night, Prichard said, her staff knows they don’t typically need to answer right that second.

It may have been something she needed to send get off her to do list so she can relax, but that doesn’t mean it needs to interrupt another person’s time away from the office.

“Leaders have to set expectations of balance,” Prichard said.

That was a message — the importance of trying to find balance — that resonated with event attendee Heather Laake, of Mid American Credit Union.

“That’s important for millennials like myself to hear,” she said.

Laake also said it was heartening to hear each of the panelists’ backgrounds and to know they all once started in similar place to where she is in her career.

That means there are still plenty of opportunities to come, just like the opportunities that each panelist at one point or another used to take the next step in their career.

It was that message that stuck with Laake’s co-worker at Mid American, Vanessa .

“Don’t second-guess yourself on opportunities,” she said. “If not me, then who? I really liked that.”
