Former airline exec chosen to head Amtrak “Amtrak is a great company today, and I’m excited about using my experience and working with the board to make it even better. I’m passionate about building strong businesses that create the best travel experience possible for customers.”
BY DANIEL MCCOY dhmccoy@bizjournals.com
The potential decision to relaunch Amtrak passenger rail service in Wichita could now fall on the desk of former airline executive Richard Anderson. Anderson, formerly the CEO of Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines, was announced this week as the new CEO of Amtrak, with the company saying in a press release that he will begin in that role on July 12. Amtrak is studying a potential return of service to Wichita after nearly 40 years, with the latest step earlier this month when the company brought an inspection train through town. Amtrak continues to work with officials from several states on funding and infrastructure upgrades that could eventually restore direct passenger rail service from Kansas City to Fort Worth. Amtrak offers service out of Newton and bus service from Wichita to that station, as well as its station in Oklahoma City. Anderson was most recently the executive chairman of the board at Delta, after

He will succeed interim CEO Wick Moorman, who stepped into that role at Amtrak last fall. The two will operate as co-CEOs until the end of the year, at which time Moorman will become an advisor to the
company. “It is an honor to join Amtrak at a time when passenger rail service is growing in importance in America,” Anderson said in the press release. “Amtrak is a great company today, and I’m excited about using my experience and working with the board to make it even better. CHARLES KOCH GOES PRIMETIME Charles Koch, chairman and CEO of Wichita-based Koch Industries Inc., and the nonprofit group Stand Together have partnered with football great Deion Sanders on a $21 million project to fight poverty. According to a report from USA Today, the program — called Prime 5, a play off Sanders’ “Prime Time” nickname when he played in the NFL and as a baseball player in the MLB — will build on existing Koch programs in Dallas to support young entrepreneurs and reduce gang violence. The new venture was announced at the start of the Koch political network and donor meeting this past weekend in Colorado Springs. According to a separate report from the Washington Post, Sanders attended his first such meeting in California earlier this year and later traveled to Wichita to meet with Koch directly to talk about some of the work he was already doing in Dallas, where he once played for the Dallas Cowboys. According to reports, Sanders believes Charles and David Koch have been unfairly attacked in the media over the years and sees them as having a similar goal in what they do as he has in his work in Dallas. “You’re talking about a family that has one desire,” Sanders said, according to the Washington Post. “To make this country a better place.”

In July, that department will be moved from a fourth-floor space in St. Francis Hospital to a space on the second floor of the building that is about double the size of where the clinic is now. That clinic serves patients with cardiac valve disease with Via Christi leaders identifying a need to bring trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and other cardiology procedures to Wichita. That was early in 2012. Now, the team of physicians performing those surgeries is closing in on its 500th procedure — a total that those involved expect to hit this fall. The procedures are minimally invasive, allowing patients to return to regular activities within a few days after surgery. “This is the future of cardiovascular

When approved by the Food & Drug Administration they will provide new ways patients who have historically had higher risks associated with cardiac conditions can be treated.

SPECIAL REPORT: REAL ESTATE CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN STREAMLINED PROCESSES
Technology aides Wichita’s commercial real estate companies BY JOSH HECK jheck@bizjournals.com
Technology is changing the commercial real estate industry. Advances in software development and data analytics have given agents and brokers new avenues for showing clients prospective properties to buy or lease, leaders of local commercial real estate companies say. “It’s the ability to have more information but also to show the client how it is being received and used,” says Steve Martens, CEO of NAI Martens. Digital platforms, he says, make information on properties more readily available and more easily updated. Increased use of virtual reality is one example. Virtual reality software allows properties to be shown anytime from anywhere, negating the need to see a space in person. The use of augmented reality also is becoming increasingly popular as a means to show spaces with a client’s branding and layout preferences. Drone photography is another avenue through which properties are showcased. Commercial real estate leaders say aerial footage from drones is particularly useful in showing a potential retail property’s placement amid surrounding properties or

amenities. Those videos then can be shared across various platforms, such as social media channels and multiple listing services. Commercial real estate brokerages also are utilizing customer relationship management software to offer marketing options for properties or integrate with other software providers in marketing properties. Commercial leaders say the need to operate from an office is lessened when agents have access to smart phone applications that allow them to schedule appointments, send and sign contracts and search listings on behalf of clients. Chad Stafford, president of Occidental Management, says new technology platforms are helping commercial real estate companies reach a broader audience and be more efficient in the process. He says in general more capital is being poured into technology for the commercial real estate industry to help streamline accounting, leasing and property management. “It’s going to allow for faster communication,” he says. The Occidental website, for example, was recently updated to be more mobile friendly and easier to update. Users are able to access virtual tours of featured properties.

West Wichita development taking shape near Northwest HS BY JOSH HECK jheck@bizjournals.com
A plan to transform the long-vacant southeast corner of 13th Street North and Tyler, Occidental Management’s Tyler Pointe, is progressing. Tenant finishes are beginning in a 28,000-square-foot mixed-use building on site. Chad Stafford, president of Occidental Management, says he anticipates that work being completed in September or October. He says a QuikTrip that is under construction in the development could be done in a similar time frame. The Tulsa-based convenience store chain purchased two acres within Tyler Pointe to construct one of its Generation Three stores and replace an older site near 13th and Maize Road. Stafford says Occidental also is developing multiple one-acre outparcel sites to complement the Tyler Pointe development. Another 24,000 to 30,000 square feet

make the development stand out. A 4,000-square-foot restaurant called Hurricane Grill & Wings will be on the corner of the L-shaped building, creating room for a large patio. Mike Decker, a project manager with Spangenberg Phillips Tice Architecture, says one of the challenges with designing the development was the desire to incorporate visibility from 13th and Tyler. “The issue was trying to address both directions of traffic,” he says. The L-shape of the building helps address that issue. The development also features a larger plaza area in front of the tenant spaces as a gathering area. “It’s inviting people who are visiting to sit outside,” Stafford says. Harman Huffman Construction Group is constructing the building shell. Company leaders there expect that portion to be completed in August. The other tenants Occidental has secured for Tyler Pointe are Bagel Haus, VietNom Nom and Great Clips. Occidental bought the undeveloped land from Wichita USD 259 in 2010.

Embracing their potential
WICHITA CAN BOOST YOUNG STARTUPS BY NOT OVERLOOKING THEM

BY DANIEL MCCOY dhmccoy@bizjournals.com
T
hey might be young, but they mean business. The Wichita Business Journal takes a look this week at five startup businesses with young men and women at the helm to highlight the growing vitality of young entrepreneurs in the local business environment. Each came to the attention of the WBJ by recommendation from stakeholders in the local entrepreneurial scene, including Youth Entrepreneurs and e2e. The selected group, ranging in age from 16 to 22, has attracted attention for more than just their ideas. They’ve also already shown business savvy. For example, the majority of them are already making money with their businesses — ranging from five to six figures. However, each, on the advice of mentors, asked that their specific sales figures not be published. Their early business acumen and willingness to listen and learn makes these young entrepreneurs ones to bet on, says Jacob Wayman, director at the e2e Accelerator. One of the offshoots of the entrepreneurial ecosystem groups like e2e have helped establish in Wichita, Wayman says, is that it provides an avenue for young companies to connect to resources they need to help take their businesses to the next level. That, in turn, helps connect them to a community that could one day be home to their potentially employmentdriving ideas. But, having worked with many young entrepreneurs himself, including some of those featured here, Wayman says there is also a youthful energy in each that is contagious. “It’s inspiring to people like me … they aren’t afraid to just go out there and do it,” Wayman says. If you’re interested in catching some of that inspirational energy, each has something else in common: They’re more than happy to talk with potential investors. But beyond even that, Wayman says, these and other local young entrepreneurs give the Wichita business community an opportunity to invest in its own future. And it might not even be their current idea that hits it big. But for young people already showing this kind of drive and entrepreneurial spirit, it’s a good bet, Wayman says, that there is an idea in each of them that only needs a little support to become a home run. “Take them seriously,” he says. “Empower them, embrace them and mentor them.”
VYTAL Jared Goering, left, and Spencer Steinert, founders of Vytal, show off their wearable biofeedback devices.
FOUNDERS: Jared Goering and Spencer Steinert, both 19. WHAT THE BUSINESS DOES: Vytal makes wearable technology to provide biofeedback on performance for athletes. The business was formed about three years ago by Goering and Steinert, who go back to elementary school together and are now students at Wichita State University in the master of innovation design program. The wearable technology is designed to give athletes, as well as coaches and trainers, real-time feedback on performance by measuring everything from heartbeat and respiration to fatigue levels and even concussion tracking using wireless devices small enough not to impede the activity. Importantly, the technology allows for data to be examined by experts immediately from anywhere in the world, potentially connecting athletes with the best minds in sports science and medicine without either ever having to leave their base of operation. WHERE THE BUSINESS STANDS: Vytal, which is an LLC, is now in testing with the University of Buffalo volleyball team, highlighting the important team-tracking aspect the technology can provide. Other collegiate teams from around the country are expected to follow. The pair say they have also made high-level connections with the U.S. Olympic Committee and professional sports teams, including the Boston Red Sox. THE HYPE: Some in the local entrepreneurial environment have tabbed Vytal as poten-
tially one of the next big ideas to come out of Wichita. The company has already taken part in the LaunchPrep program of WSU and e2e, and recently placed second at the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge at Kansas State University. Goering and Steinert believe Vytal — which they describe as a human performance innovation company — has the potential to revolutionize sports analytics, giving them a potentially major foothold in a global market forecast by WinterGreen Research to reach $4.7 billion by 2021. WHAT’S NEXT: As testing continues, Steinert and Goering expect to be selling Vytal technology by the end of the year, with a full launch about a year from now. They also expect to add additional capabilities to the product over time and to eventually take it beyond just the realm of athletics. At the same time, the two entrepreneurs have also launched their next venture, Event Horizon, wearable education technology that helps teach children computer coding. MENTORS: Goering and Steinert say Jacob Wayman at e2e has been instrumental in plugging them into the local entrepreneurial network. Other mentors include Mark Torline, director at WSU’s Center for Entrepreneurship; Jeremy Patterson in the human performance lab at WSU; and Michael Capps, one of their direct mentors through the LaunchPrep program. BUSINESS LESSONS LEARNED SO FAR: It’s OK to be unsure. Don’t be afraid to take risks and narrow down your focus as best you can.

PINOLE BLUE
Eddie Sandoval shows off the Pinole Blue product he and business partner Levi Iseman are now producing in Haysville.
FOUNDERS: Eddie Sandoval, 22, and Levi Iseman, 21. WHAT THE BUSINESS DOES: Pinole Blue is a food processing company that manufactures an all-organic dry powder using blue corn from the mountains of northern Mexico, from where Sandoval traces his lineage. The powder can be blended with water to make an organic drink and also in cooking. The near-mythical properties of pinole date back to the Aztec civilization, which used the ground corn grain, mixed with a combination of other spices, to fuel their warriors. Its rejuvenating properties have come to even greater fame due to its popularity with the indigenous Tarahumara in Mexico, whose ability to run hundreds of miles without rest gained broader international attention thanks to the best-selling book “Born to Run.” Sandoval says his family had been drinking the product for generations — and they swear by it. That prompted Sandoval, a recent WSU graduate, to wonder if there might be a market for Pinole Blue in the U.S. Last year, he brought home a half-ton of the blue corn and began production with Iseman out of a garage. WHERE THE BUSINESS STANDS: Pinole Blue, which incorporated earlier this month, is already producing revenue, selling 400 pounds of the product after getting placement in about 30 stores throughout Kansas. The company recently opened its first production facility in Haysville. The company also recently returned from a trip to Mexico with fellow entrepreneur
Kyle Offutt of InFlux, who is also profiled in this publication, capturing new video footage and photos to be used in its increasing marketing efforts. WHAT’S NEXT: Now graduated from college, Sandoval is devoting himself full-time to Pinole Blue. He and Iseman plan to continue working to get the product into more health food stores, including Whole Foods. Pinole Blue’s reach, however, is about to extend far beyond just Kansas, as the pair plan to launch online July 10. THE HYPE: With profit-generating sales already, Pinole Blue, in only a year of existence, has also racked up accolades that help cement it as one of the local startups poised for big things. That includes its recent top overall placing at WSU’s Shocker New Venture Competition. All that helps serve as a springboard for Pinole Blue to launch even further into an organic foods industry that the Organic Trade Association says totaled around $47 billion in sales in the U.S. alone in 2016. MENTORS: Sandoval and Iseman have made numerous connections through Wichita State University and the Barton International Group, including group advisor and Barton School lecturer Kate Kung-McIntyre. The pair say they are also working closely with Mael Hernandez, CEO at Wichita’s R.D. Henry & Co., on commercialization of Pinole Blue. BIGGEST BUSINESS LESSONS LEARNED SO FAR: Take your shot, because you don’t know what is out there until you do.
INFLUX FOUNDERS: Kyle Offutt and business partner Victor Fontes, both 22. WHAT THE BUSINESS DOES: InFlux is a social media marketing company that wants to help your business get noticed. Utilizing multiple digital platforms and pages, and leveraging the growing power of social media influencers, InFlux drives web traffic to customers’ sites and products. The company also leverages Offutt’s passion for photography and videography to give those customers the high-quality images needed to tell their story to the online audience. WHERE THE BUSINESS STANDS: Launched about two years ago, InFlux, which is an LLC, is driving revenue through recurring customer contracts, video projects and individual contracts, as well as through some content management and web development for E-commerce work. WHERE IT’S GOING: Offutt says entrepreneurship has always been in his blood. Some early ventures in social media marketing on Twitter and his own growing videography portfolio prompted him and Fontes to decide to strike out into the relatively new social media market of the advertising world with
InFlux. With its platform established, Offutt says the goal is to continue to grow over the next two years, all while working to stay out in front of a new, and rapidly-changing industry. Offutt also hopes to be a serial entrepreneur, launching more new ideas in the future, while also investing in other entrepreneurs and participating in startup incubators. THE HYPE: InFlux is generating profits at the relative ground level of a potentially massive industry, with industry research firm eMarketer projecting global social network advertising spending to hit $40 billion this year. MENTORS: InFlux has built a mentor and advisor network via connections made through WSU, including through the Center for Entrepreneurship, the Barton International Group and the Shocker Innovation Corps. It has leveraged those same connections to form business partnerships, such as its social marketing work with Pinole Blue, a company also featured here. BIGGEST BUSINESS LESSONS SO FAR: You get rewarded for taking risks, and have everything in writing.
Kyle Offutt, of InFlux, and business partner Victor Fontes are helping customers get noticed through social media marketing.

SOCRATION
FOUNDERS: Aftab Shaikh and Cristian Silva, both 16. WHAT THE BUSINESS DOES: Socration is a technology company developing an app by the same name designed to improve the interaction between students and teachers. It’s developers, both juniors at Wichita East High School, say the idea began as a way to lower student anxiety in large group settings. Students who might be nervous about asking a question can use Socration to ask questions directly to the teacher without doing so in front of the class. The app is only a few months old. The pair launched as part of a Youth Entrepreneurs program this spring. With plans for additional add-ons, the product will eventually generate revenue through teachers and schools buying individual sessions for their classes on the platform, which allows for a full suite of digital teaching options. As Silva and Shaikh explain, reducing classroom anxiety boosts curiosity and enables every student to get the most out their education. After all, they say, knowledge is power. WHERE THE BUSINESS STANDS: The app is in development as Shaikh and Silva work on raising capital to help support an upcoming launch. WHERE THE BUSINESS IS GOING: After launching Socration, the pair say they want to continue to refine and add technology to the platform, including the student-to-student option they believe will separate their product from its competitors. Both have designs on future entrepreneurial endeavors
Aftab Shaikh, left, and Cristian Silva want to ease studentteacher interaction with their Socration app.
as well. Shaikh plans to pursue an MBA, while Silva will graduate from East with an associates degree in business under his belt. THE HYPE: Tabbed by Youth Entrepreneurs as one to watch, Socration is gaining notoriety locally. That includes a recent presentation at Wichita’s 1 Million Cups. The founders are looking big, believing Socration can be refined to eventually be used to eliminate substitute teachers from having to physically come to a school at all, or allow students to study under favored instructors from all over the world they would otherwise not have the chance to learn from. As they point out, Snapchat started out as just a small
LONG’S CUSTOM STUDIOS
Courtney Long has turned her artistic skills into a growing business with Long’s Custom Studios.
FOUNDER: Courtney Long, 16. WHAT THE BUSINESS DOES: Long, a junior at Clearwater High School, has a turned a hobby into a revenue-driving business with Long’s Custom Studios. As a sole proprietor, Long uses an airbrush to paint figurine horses that she now sells online through social media and at trade shows around the country. WHERE THE BUSINESS STANDS: While she focuses on finishing high school before heading off to college, Long oversees a business and sales that are growing along with her reputation as an artist. While she

MENTORS: In addition to attorney Sam Foreman of Fleeson, Gooing, Coulson & Kitch serving as their lawyer, the young men behind Socration have also built a mentor network through Youth Entrepreneurs and say they are working especially close with KNOXX founder Mike Mathia. started in the niche market of figurine horses, she is branching out to painting other collectibles and things like yard ornaments. WHAT’S NEXT: After high school and then college, Long says she hopes — among other possible endeavors — to begin manufacturing the products she paints for customers, allowing for greater customization and eliminating some of the overhead involved in buying the figurines from third-party suppliers. THE HYPE: Long has had a very successful year with the business as part of Youth Entrepreneurs. After
winning local and regional pitch contests as part of the program, Long’s Custom Studios went on to collect even more contest money by placing at the organization’s multi-state Big Idea Finals in May at Wichita State University. Next up for Long will be a return trip next month to the biggest event in her industry, after being selected to present her products at BreyerFest in Kentucky. The model horse expo attracts around 15,000 visitors a year. One of Long’s creations last year placed in the Top 5 in the show’s custom design contest from more than 600 entries. Hoping for a similar showing this year, the young artist is building a following in what the Hobby and Collectibles Database last year estimated to be the nearly $5 billion equine segment of an overall $200 billion global collectibles market. MENTORS: In addition to the connections made through Youth Entrepreneurs, Long says she also leans on her family for support. That includes her father, an executive at a local plastics manufacturer; her mother, who helps her at her shows; and her brother, who is part of the Barton International Group at WSU. BIGGEST BUSINESS LESSONS SO FAR: Things move fast. The first sale is a huge achievement, but after that it’s a blur.

EXPANDING CAPACITIES

Outpatient surgery centers experiencing growth BY JOSH HECK jheck@bizjournals.com
The directive for Jenny Morris was clear: Increase surgical volume at Surgicare of Wichita. Growing Surgicare, she says, is being done by expanding the surgical specialties the organization offers. “We’re actively recruiting new doctors,” Morris says. Twenty-six surgeons have been added to Surgicare’s physician roster over the past three years, with more anticipated in the coming months. Morris says Surgicare is expanding its capacities in various surgical specialties, especially orthopedics and gastrointestinal procedures. She wants Surgicare to grow to the point where surgeons there are completing 1,000 to 1,200 procedures a month. To compare, the organization had more than 700 completed procedures in December, one of the busiest months for surgeries before insurance benefits roll over to a new year. Most of the procedures allow patients to return home the same day without an

The growth of Surgicare of Wichita is reflected on this year’s Wichita Business Journal list of the area’s outpatient surgery centers, ranked by the number of outpatient surgeries completed in 2016. Surgicare maintained its No. 3 ranking on this year’s list, but posted an increase of 417 outpatient procedures over its 2015 total. Cypress Surgery Center again tops the
list and reported 508 more outpatient procedures over a year ago. Administrator Joyce White attributes the growth to streamlined internal processes, which are helping to attract additional physicians. She says eight to 10 additional general surgeons have begun practicing at Cypress Surgery over the past year. Existing physicians are expanding their caseloads as well, White says.

10 MINUTES WITH...
The place to be NEW ENVISION CFO MARK EATON IS ALL IN ON HIS MISSION AND COMMUNITY very robust and creative. You look at all the education that’s here between WSU and Friends and Newman and WATC ... so you have great quality of life, great arts, great business, great education. So I wanted to stick around in Wichita. Gary Plummer at the chamber had introduced (Envision CEO) Michael Monteferrante and I, so that’s how that came about.
Wichita is home for Envision CFO Mark Eaton.
BRITTANY SCHOWALTER / WBJ
M
ark Eaton, a native of the St. Louis area, has had a business career that has taken him all around the
country. After nearly two decades in public accounting, work on mergers and acquisitions led him to become a turnaround specialist for private equity firms. It was that work that first brought him to Wichita four years ago. Now, thanks to the mission and opportunity he has become part of at Envision and the community surrounding it, Eaton says the Air Capital is the place for him. What first brought you to Wichita? I had ended up in Silicon Valley during the era of irrational exuberance, which was extremely interesting, and from there, I actually did the Beverly Hillbillies in reverse. California was not the place for me. So I wound up in Chicago with EY doing mergers and acquisition due diligence for private equity groups and then went off on my own to do turnaround work for private equity groups on portfolio companies. I did that from about 2001 on, and that is

what eventually brought me to Wichita, Kansas. I was doing some work for a group out of Chicago and Vancouver and they wanted me to go down to the Wichita, Kansas, area (to what was then Fabpro Polymers in Kingman). So I lived in Wichita and drove out to Kingman. We got that company refinanced, put up for sale and another private equity group liked it. I told them there was also a competitor up for sale, it was going to be a bankruptcy liquidation, they could buy that one and the one in Kingman and be the biggest in North America. They liked the idea, and asked me if I would stick around for a couple of years and bring the two companies together (under the Great Lakes Polymer Technologies umbrella). I did that, but then it was time for me to move on to something else. What was it, then, that kept you in Wichita? I was 60 years old and had kind of tired of moving on new things and new places every couple of years. I had been in Wichita for four years, I’d come here in December of 2012. And I said, “I quite like Wichita.” It’s a great quality of life here. The business community and the arts community are
Beyond what Wichita offers, what specifically attracted you to the opportunity at Envision? The mission here of working with blind and visionimpaired people is just amazing. You walk through — whether it’s the facilities on Main Street or the production down on Water Street — and see what’s going on, and you can’t help but be touched by how it’s improving peoples’ quality of life. And as I learned more about it, talking to Michael and learning his vision for the organization, as well as the vision of where the whole BVI (Blind-Visually Impaired) community around the country and around the globe is evolving to ... this new wave (of more technologydriven, white-collar job opportunities), and (I learned) that Envision is a thought leader in that. He is trying to build an organization that is not just a thought leader here in Wichita, but across the country, when it comes to the whole BVI sector. You’re very involved in the arts community here. What is special about the arts in Wichita I think the arts are a very important part of the quality of life for a community. You can have a great, robust business community. But when you get done working, you want something else to go do. I consider sports part of the arts, performing visual, all of that. You need that to have a well-rounded community. When I got here to Wichita, and started getting involved in what is now Mark Arts, the more I started learning, the more I learned that Wichita actually has a very, very robust arts community, and it actually has a very good national reputation. Then I got involved in music theater. The first time I saw a presentation here, I was taken aback, because it really is Broadway-quality music theater. I think sometimes the only place that the arts community in Wichita is a secret is actually in Wichita. — Daniel McCoy
