Matt Michaelis takes over at Emprise Emprise Bank has a new chairman, one with a familiar name within the organization.

The bank’s board of directors recently elected Matt Michaelis to serve in that capacity.

He succeeds his father, Mike Michaelis, as Emprise’s chairman. Mike Michaelis will serve as the organization’s vice chairman and will continue in his role as president and CEO of Emprise Financial Corp.

This is part of a transition to the next generation of leadership for one of the largest financial institutions in the Wichita area.

Matt Michaelis, meanwhile, returned to Wichita four years ago after spending the early portion of his career working in finance in New York, including founding and managing Perla Capital Partners.

He wanted to come back to his hometown because he viewed Wichita as a good place to raise his three children.

Michaelis joined Emprise in 2002 as an advisory director. He came back to Wichita in 2013 and was elected as Emprise’s vice chairman three years later.

“Emprise Bank has experienced a tremendous amount of growth over the past several decades,” he says. “We are fortunate to have financial strength and a

great team of employees as the foundation for our continued success.”

Michaelis says he’s humbled and honored to continue the work of his father and grandfather, Mick Michaelis, both of whom are still active in the business.

Wichita-based Emprise Bank serves more than 20 Kansas communities and has more than $1.5 billion in assets.

The Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas has been awarded $50,000 that will be used to help local employers better train their employees.

The money comes from the National Fund for Workforce Solutions (NFWS) and will support the local organization’s Preparation for Advanced Career Employment System (PACES) project.

The Workforce Alliance says in an emailed press release that local employer partners XLT Ovens and Cox Machine will utilize the grant through PACES to help provide cross training and financial literacy tools for employees and supervisor training for managers.

The organization says that since it formed PACES in 2008 that it has provided training to 1,487 people and recorded 2,761 job placements among more than 100 employers participating with program initiatives.

Three other communities, Cincinnati, Baltimore and Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., also received $50,000 grants in similar support from the NFWS. The alliance is involved in workforce training for young workers, along with others returning to the job market.

Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport in 2016 recorded its secondbusiest year, with 1,602,311 total passengers making their way in and out of the Air Capital.

That was up 1.97 percent from the total passenger count in 2015 and was only 1 percent off the record year of 2008.

Here is a look at the airport’s best passenger-count years on record: 1,571,348

MAX Aerostructures and construction partner Hutton Construction Corp. have begun remodel work on the new aerospace supplier’s building in southwest Wichita.

A $3.2 million building permit for the work appears in this week’s Leads section on page 18.

MAX’s executive vice president and general manager, Sean Purcell, says the work includes a full front office remodel and other renovations throughout the 206,000-square-foot building it purchased last year. That building was formerly used by Bombardier Learjet.

Part of the construction work also includes a new lab for quality control and inspection work.

“That will be key to our business going forward,” Purcell says.

under contract and to win more customers from the aerospace industry.

Builders Plus launching virtual reality division Builders Plus Construction is launching a new division that brings virtual reality into the building industry.

The division is called Grit Virtual Construction.

Its objective: Create for developers and building owners an immersive experience into a new building’s layout that allows people to see how things will look long before construction starts and track progress after a project has begun.

Builders Plus is an early adopter of virtual reality technology in the construction industry. And interest continues to increase, says Chris Callen, CEO of Builders Plus.

“We have a lot of skills that don’t fit inside our core business,” he says.

The idea was to give the new division its own identity and branding to be able to market its services separately. Grit Virtual will operate under the Builders Plus umbrella.

The division will incorporate a service Callen calls Virtual iMmersion eXperience (VMX) to show buildings in a virtu-

al space and building information modeling, a process that has become more common in construction to digitally prototype and virtually simulate building projects.

Callen says virtual reality can help the industry be more efficient and less reliant on two-dimensional design processes that typically involve pages of printed blueprints that aren’t easily changed.

Proponents say virtual reality has an array of applications when applied to building design.

The technology can be used to show where appliances or office furnishings will go. Virtual reality can also show where heating, ventilation and air conditioning units will be placed or to determine the color of the carpet or cabinet finishings.

Callen says this is only the beginning of where technology can take construction.

TWO LOCAL HOTELS WILL BE REBRANDED Two Wichita hotels are now under new ownership.

An investment group operating under the name RK Hotel LLC has purchased the Northrock Suites at 7856 E. 36th Street North and Wichita Inn North at 3741 N. Rock Road with plans to rebrand the facilities as national brands.

The 101-room Northrock Suites will become a Comfort Inn & Suites, while the 97-room Wichita Inn will be converted to a Super 8.

Troy Farha, a retail advisor with NAI Martens, brokered the transaction.

“In order to be competitive in the market moving forward, the reflagging of the properties allows the new owners to maximize the services, branding and reservation systems offered by these national hotel brands to their guests.”

Industry driving demand for cybersecurity professionals

Sometimes a threat also means an opportunity.

That is the case in south central Kansas, where industry demand is bringing more and more partners to help fill the workforce pipeline with cybersecurity professionals businesses say they need for the future.

One of latest to respond is Wichita State University, which last week announced new undergraduate and graduate programs in cybersecurity.

Deepak Gupta, program director for engineering technology, said the courses are designed “for individuals who want to be part of the future workforce securing cyber infrastructure from small business to national security levels.”

Wichita State University has announced new programs that take aim at industry demand for cybersecurity professionals.

That diverse a group of future potential employers is represented by the com-

panies partnering with the Blueprint for Regional Economic Growth (BREG), an initiative of the Greater Wichita Partnership, on its identified data services and information technology cluster.

More than 20 companies and entities are BREG participants in that cluster, ranging from the Boeing Co., Koch Industries Inc., NetApp and local startup Ulterius Technologies, to the Kansas Air National Guard and the 184th Intelligence Wing at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita.

One thing those participants have in common, says Craig Bay, director of special projects for the Greater Wichita Partnership, is their voiced concern about the increasing need for cybersecurity professionals.

With WSU joining other area institutions including Friends University, Butler Community College and Southwestern College in offering more options for students to pursue cybersecurity careers, the region could be getting ahead of the curve in meeting a growing demand nationwide.

2015 data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated 209,000 open cybersecurity jobs unfilled nationwide.

One of the initiatives of BREG in the data services/IT cluster this year will be to quantify that demand.

The good thing, Bay says, is that institutions like WSU and others aren’t waiting for a number and are already responding to clear point of industry demand.

“It’s definitely an untapped opportunity,” Bay says.

The Albers family’s focus on solving problems for customers has built a family history of entrepreneurial success.

T

he Albers brothers had to act fast.

They had just left a meeting with executives at Cessna Aircraft Co. about providing some parts transportation and logistics, and the company wanted to see their operation first hand.

Their only problem? They didn’t have an operation yet.

As they rushed back to Cheney to clear out warehouse space to show they had the inventory room Cessna needed, Jeff Albers called Lubbers Chevrolet and secured two Dodge Magnums so they would also have fleet vehicles to show off.

They won the Cessna work and that was the start of Leadfoot Express, which would grow to a fleet of a doz-

en vehicles and multiple customers before the Albers sold the business in 2013.

It was just one stop on a diverse entrepreneurial path that has led the brothers to their latest venture, Albers Finishing & Solutions LLC in Cheney.

They recently completed construction of a 25,000-square-foot facility and the installation of an automated liquid painting system for agricultural manufacturing customers.

But with plans for more expansion this year and added capabilities they believe will help them win work from a variety of industries, 2017 could see the Albers take big strides down the latest fork in their entrepreneurial road.

It’s a road that has taken them from pizza restaurants to Art’s & Mary’s Tater Chips, to transportation logistics and component finishing.

Not your basic entrepreneurial path.

And while stories like their winning of the Cessna

work may sound like flying by the seat of their pants to some, for the Albers family it’s simply part of not letting problems stop them from making good on what has always been their entrepreneurial philosophy.

It isn’t products they’re so much interested in when they see a business opportunity, says Bret Albers. It is the process and the value they believe they can add by becoming trusted problem-solvers for their customers.

“It’s about solving problems and building relationships,” he says. “We need to help (our customers) meet their own goals.”

The entrepreneurial road Brothers Bret and Jeff Albers got early insights into how business works by working in family-owned Gambino’s Pizza restaurants.

In 1994, they struck out with their own brand, D’Mario’s Pizza, and opened locations in Harper, Kan. and Perkins, Okla.

TIMELINE The Albers have enjoyed several entrepreneurial wins in a lifetime spent in business. Here is a timeline of their ventures.

2005 The Albers start Leadfoot Express, where their younger brother, Craig, joins them in 2006. They would sell the business in 2013.

1997 Albers Development LLC buys the licensing rights to Art’s & Mary’s Tater Chips, and revive the brand through the remainder of the decade.

ART’S & MARY’S After buying the rights to Art’s & Mary’s Tater Chips in 1997, the Albers set out to revive a brand that had developed a loyal following but had gone dormant after a bankruptcy under a previous owner.

They began shipping new product to the market in 1999 and sales grew four-fold by the end of 2003.

The Albers sold Art’s & Mary’s last year after receiving an offer they say made it the right business decision.

A few years later opportunity knocked again when the Albers were able to buy the exclusive licensing right to Art’s & Mary’s — a potato chip brand that had developed a loyal following before fading away after a 1994 bankruptcy.

What followed was a lesson in entrepreneurial patience, as the next two years were spent perfecting the recipes — they were determined to bring back the chips with exactly the flavor customers remembered — and lining up a producer to actually make the product. It was also an early exercise in their problem-solving focus.

“We had this customer base and this product,” Jeff Albers says. “We had to bring the two back together. It was a unique opportunity.”

Their patience paid off and in 1999, the first truckload of the chips arrived at their warehouse.

Sitting in the office of their gleaming new finishing facility in Cheney, a stone’s throw from a state-of-theart automated system that will help it move hundreds of thousands of components a year, the Albers brothers laugh as they remember their joy at clearing their first pallet of Art’s & Mary’s chips.

It wasn’t long after that distributors began to add up, prompting sales to double from 2000 to 2001 and dou-

The Albers had hit a home run in bringing back Art’s & Mary’s, a business they would hold onto until they sold it last year. They got an offer for the brand that was too good to pass up.

But even in those heady days as the chips were flying off the shelves, their entrepreneurial spirit remained restless.

They got into real estate development with the 2004 purchase of land near Cheney that would become the West Oaks housing development, where they recently sold the final 1.5 acre lot.

It was also around the time of that land buy that the brothers had a miss.

In 2005, after having sold the D’Mario’s in Harper, they became a Mr. Goodcents franchisee with the purchase of a store in Hutchinson.

But the location closed soon after, teaching them what they say was a valuable lesson in doing their due diligence on any new business venture.

“It was a tough market at that location,” Jeff Albers says. “(The miss) was 100 percent on us.”

It was the need for more reliable parts delivery, and with Leadfoot, where younger brother Craig Albers joined them in 2006, the Albers again made good on solving that problem.

In 2013, after again taking an offer they couldn’t pass up in selling Leadfoot, they began to look around for their next venture.

For the Albers family — who have forged their own entrepreneurial path outside of what has been the headline-making efforts in Wichita of groups trying create a cohesive, local entrepreneurial ecosystem — it was again an existing relationship that brought opportunity back to their door.

A philosophy in practice In 2014, a family friend at an agricultural manufacturer in Kingman mentioned that John Deere was increasingly wanting them to deliver finished, painted product.

They didn’t have any experience in the field, but there it was again — a problem that needed to be solved.

Diving in headlong to learn as much about finishing as they could, they took on the job and Albers Finishing & Solutions was born. Today, it is churning out finished components for that Kingman manufacturer, Don Dye Co. Janell Ziegler, of Don Dye Co., works closely with Albers on their finishing work and says their philosophy shows in the work they do.

“They strive to do things better,” she says. “They want to get it done on time and get it done right the first time.”

She says another aspect of their philosophy — the communication with customers they say they’ve always tried to maintain — is also evident.

If there is an issue, Ziegler says, her business knows about it immediately.

And they’ve already become a successful supply partner for the same reason she guesses they’ve made so many other ventures work.

“It’s their go-get’em attitude,” she says.

They have already planned another 25,000-square-foot expansion project that will break ground soon.

In addition, they plan for added finishing capabilities they say will open up plenty of new work opportunities.

They are actively engaged with a variety of customers and industries about what their latest business can bring to the table for them.

“We’re getting our name and our product out there,” says Craig Albers.

They believe the technology they have and the technology they plan can offer a reliability that will attract new customers and help them grow their own business and add employees in the coming years.

“We want to deliver the same part every time,” Bret Albers says.

Their automated system was designed and installed by IntelliFinishing of Salina, which now uses Albers’ plant to show off its own capabilities to potential customers.

The finishing business is their main focus now, though there are others still in the brothers’ portfolio, including a pallet racking business, D’Mario’s in Cheney, real estate development and other passive investments.

And, of course, you never know when some relationship formed along the way will lead to another phone call, another set of problems that need to be solved and another opportunity.

Whatever else they may add to the finishing business in time, Jeff Albers says the game plan for success won’t change: the same customer-centric, problem-solving approach that has brought them this far on their entrepreneurial journey will continue.

“It’s not just A to Z,” he says. “It’s meeting all those expectations in between.”

Oil industry ‘consternation’ makes operators reluctant to drill

Opinions differ on the state of the Kansas oil patch.

It’s an outlook Schremmer hopes will lead to more Kansas oil drilling.

Others are more cautious, saying the price of oil is still creating uncertainty about new drilling.

Kansas oil producers continue to heavily scrutinize existing drilling operations and shut down wells amid decreases in oil prices. New wells are a rarity, though some producers are engaging limited new-drilling activity.

“I think there is still a lot of consternation,” says Mike Vess, CEO of Wichita-based Vess Oil Corp. “It just gives you that pause.”

Collective decreases in oil drilling activity are reflected on the Wichita Business Journal’s oil and gas permits to drill list on page 14.

The number of permits to drill dropped 52 percent in 2016 over 2015, another down year. Since 2014, permits to drill have fallen by 84 percent, according to data from the Kansas Corporation Commission and the Kansas Geological Survey.

The 2016 WBJ list, which ranks companies by the number of Wichita-area permits to drill in 2016, has three fewer companies than a similar list a year ago.

Eight of the 10 companies were not listed in 2015.

Bear Petroleum, seventh on the 2015 list, tops this year’s list with six area permits pulled last year. Schremmer says his company is engaging in some new drilling activity in the area and across the state, but on a limited basis.

In general, he says, new drilling has been done with savings, not cash flow.

“The last few years have been really tough on independents,” Schremmer says. “I’ve lost money for two years.”

Vess says his company is planning to drill four to six new wells in this area and two to five in parts of western Kansas.

At its peak, Vess Oil would drill 15 to 25 new Kansas wells per year.

Vess says the focus of the company’s drilling operations in recent years has shifted to more resource-rich oil plays in Texas — though those operations also are being scrutinized with low oil prices.

He says the company has scaled back on Kansas drilling amid price decreases and the ability to find larger plays in the state, such as the once-promising Mississippian.

Vess says more certainty about oil prices could spur more Kansas drilling.

Operators say the reduction of Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) production could help bring some stability to oil prices.

Sub $50 prices have been the norm for the better part of the past two years. This week, the West Texas Intermediate price of oil hovered around $52 a barrel. WTI is commonly used as a benchmark in oil prices.

The price of oil began its monthslong descent after peaking in June 2014 at nearly $113 a barrel — still a far cry from the highs of more than $145 a barrel in the summer of 2008.

Operators say they’ve cut costs to the point where sustained oil prices in the range of $50 to $60 a barrel would be welcomed.

TRUMP TRADE POLICY WILL IMPACT KANSAS The relationship between the United States and Mexico is strained these days, and Kansans should be watching the situation carefully.

President Trump says the border wall will be built and Mexico will pay for it. Mexican leaders say think again, Mr. Trump.

There are many ways each side can penalize the other if the relationship continues to deteriorate.

Some of those decisions can have a big impact on Kansas businesses.

The U.S. recorded $532 billion in exports and imports with Mexico in 2015. Mexico is the second largest buyer of Kansas exports, and the market is growing.

In 2013 Mexico bought $1.5 billion in Kansas goods. That increased to $1.7 billion in 2014 and $1.8 billion in 2015, according to numbers from the Kansas Department of Commerce.

Mexico is second only to Canada when it comes to Kansas trade partners.

I suspect that many of the business leaders reading this lead or work at companies that sell goods to Mexico. You have a vested interest in the health of the relationship between the two countries.

Donald Trump was the overwhelming choice for Kansas voters who agree that building a wall is the right thing to do and that the United States needs to make better trade deals with other countries.

Business leaders are trusting that the decisions President Trump makes will have a positive impact on their bottom lines, even if he makes a few people mad. We hope that trust isn’t misplaced.

T

he education of, well, me continues as I stimulate the Wichita-area economy in ways previously unknown to my moneywasting self. It has been quite a humbling exercise.

To begin my tale of woe, I am relocating. New house.

Sounds exciting, and it is. But a move from a long-time Victorian energyeater brings with it requirements for expertise that your friendly neighborhood business columnist just doesn’t have.

Want my opinion of Sam Brownback’s one-man EF-5 destruction of the Kansas budget? No problem.

Want me to tell you whether berber or shag is the best kind of carpet for an old, grouchy columnist and his

So what are my requirements for a new fridge?

Beyond “keeps things cold,” I couldn’t begin to tell you.

And all this is in addition to the overwhelming chore of sorting through a lifetime of, uh, stuff. Lots of tossing, lots of Goodwill, some saving.

I’ve learned a lot of things — that I don’t like water spewing from my fridge enough to pay four figures for it, “power-wash” spray arms, slamming watermelon rind down a garbage disposal and what carpet is easiest to clean.

And enough that I hope I never move again.

An association first ANN ALLAIRE SEEKS GROWTH AS FIRST FEMALE LEADER OF WABA BOARD How about being the first female to serve in that role? It is a privilege to have been chosen as the first woman chair. I hope to bring the same integrity and strength that my predecessors have accomplished in this role for the past 66 years.

What are some of the industry challenges you will be taking on in this role? I plan to work closely with Wess Galyon, the chief executive officer of WABA, to accomplish this year’s goals.

We have some legislative challenges that are on our docket. And we’d like to take on health care availability for our members.

What are your objectives? My main objectives are to continue the growth of the Wichita Area Builders Association and to build the relationships with the community as a whole for buyers, builders and the real estate agents involved.

he Wichita Area Builders Association is charting a new course.

For the first time in the organization’s history, a woman is in charge of the board of directors.

Ann Allaire recently transitioned to that role and has set her sights on continuing to grow the organization.

WABA represents home builders and related businesses in Sedgwick, Harvey, Butler, Sumner, Cowley, Harper and Kingman counties and has more than 1,300 members in the region.

Allaire is no stranger to the residential real estate sector. She’s a partner in Vision Homes, a business started in 2007 with her brother, Tony Brand, and business partner, Shawn Ketzner.

Allaire designs the homes the company builds and works directly with customers through the entire home-building process. The company has to its credit homes across Wichita

She got her start in the industry in 1987 with Jay Russell Construction and worked in various roles within residential real estate after that. She spent 13 years with Randy Dean Construction.

Allaire lists time with her four grandchildren — with a fifth due in June — as her primary interest outside of work. Besides WABA, she wants to get more involved with other industry groups, such as the National Association of Women in Construction.

What does being selected as chair of the Wichita Area Builders Association mean to you? It is certainly a position of achievement. It’s an honor to be in the same company as the past two chairs, Jim Gearhart and Randy Stovall.

Through their guidance, my transition into this role was seamless. They were great leaders, a perfect example of what this position is all about.

How did you get involved with residential real estate? I have worked in the building industry since my employment with Jay Russell Construction in 1987. As soon as I started in construction, I knew this was a career path that I could find rewarding and enjoy doing every day.

What do you enjoy most about the industry? Working with new home buyers. The excitement of the building process is very gratifying to help bring dreams to reality, whether it’s for newlyweds, young families, emptynesters or retirees.

What is leading to the increase of custom homes in the Wichita area?

Our Wichita builders stay in tune with the current trends and offer a product the customers are asking for.

What’s the outlook for the residential market locally in the months ahead?

The market seems to be strong. We are working with new customers every week.
