This is one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever written. As relevant today, likely more so, as when I wrote this 2 years ago.

I believe every family needs a “kitchen table”. ~Cathy~

Good morning and welcome to my kitchen on this cool Sunday morning. The kind of morning to pour an extra cup of hot coffee and sit in your favorite spot and contemplate the upcoming day, week or month. My favorite spot in the house by far is our kitchen and our table. I love our dining table. Our kitchen is truly the "Heart" and "Nucleus" of our home. It is the place where we all end up every time we come together as a family. We may start out spread all over the house but by the time it's done everyone has made their way back into the kitchen and sits at the table, pulls up a chair or finds a spot, and even the occasional lap, wherever they can. It is where we seem to live our best life. Our table has changed over the 45 years we have been a family … different tables, different homes, different kitchens and different seasons of life but the one constant has been it is our family's gathering spot. It all started 45 years ago with just the two of us, then we added our children, then added numerous foster and adopted children, then our children added their spouses and then grandchildren and extended family & friends. We now number upwards of 30 in just our immediate family when we all get together and it is loud, raucous, filled with spills, mishaps and always lots of laughter coupled with good natured teasing, children, and family dogs running by and grabbing what ever is left on the table and I would not have it any other way. It is how I grew up and I see that it is how our children live their lives too and that makes my heart sing.

Phil and I do some of our best work here at this table. We discuss our day, our business, our family, and our hopes and dreams. Because yes, we still have hopes and dreams even after this long time of marriage and family. The majority of our life's decisions were discussed, debated (sometimes loudly), prioritized and finalized over a cup or cups of coffee and my chocolate chip cookies in our kitchen and at our table. The good, the bad and the ugly. But always together.

Our table is where our children decorated Christmas cookies, colored their Easter eggs, did their homework, played board games, puzzles were done, lively family discussions were almost every night and heart to heart talks were whispered and sometimes discipline was handed out. As they got older, they would sit at the table and tell me what they needed or wanted to while I was "busy" bustling about making dinner or baking. Mr. still sits at it every night while I'm cooking and has his coffee (or if it was a rough day -- a beer) and catches me up on how the rest of the day went after I left the shop. Our family dining table nurtured a marriage, a family and a "life". It holds all that I love dearly. It has held countless meals, the occasional baby bottom, our bills, our hands, our sorrows and our joys. It still does, just at a different season which is now much like how it was in the beginning … just Mr. and I plus the 2 children that still live here and probably always will. Another chapter in my favorite book of life.

PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on April 28, 2025, the Township Board of the Township of Boston adopted An Ordinance to Regulate the Use of Compression-Release Engine Braking Devices Within the Township, Ordinance No. 25-01 (“the Ordinance”). The principal provisions of the ordinance can be summarized as follows:

2. Definitions. The terms “compressionrelease engine braking device” and “motor vehicle” are defined.

3. Used prohibited. The use of compressionrelease engine braking devices is prohibited on Grand River Avenue at the intersection of Nash Highway and on Nash Highway at the intersection of Grand River Avenue.

4. Exceptions. The prohibition on the use of compression-release engine braking devices does not apply to authorized emergency vehicles or if using the device is necessary for the prevention of imminent harm or danger to person or property.

5. Signage. Signs may be installed at the locations established in Section 3 or elsewhere as determined by the Township Board, but the failure to install

signage is not a defense to any person found in violation of the ordinance.

6. Violations/Penalties. A violation of this ordinance is a municipal civil infraction for which the fine shall not be less than $150 for a first offense, not less than $300 for a second offense within a three year period, and not less than $500 for a third and subsequent offense within a three year period. “Subsequent offense” is defined as a violation with respect to a separate incident within 12 months of a previous violation for which the person was responsible.

7. Severability. The Ordinance is severable, and if any part of the Ordinance is declared to be unconstitutional, invalid, or unenforceable, the remaining provisions of the Ordinance will remain valid and enforceable.

TOWNSHIP BOARD OF THE

Financial moves for a growing family

If you’re adding a child to your family, it’s an exciting time, but you’ll want to be prepared — especially in terms of your finances.

So, consider these moves:

First, estimate what new expenses you’ll incur and plug these figures in to your budget. And look at what support you might get, such as paid family leave, for taking time off work. As early as possible, look around for a child care provider. Child care can be expensive, but

you might find low-cost options from local community centers, religious organizations and nonprofits.

You may want to build an emergency fund to cover six months of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account.

And contact your tax professional to learn about the dependent care credit and the federal child tax credit.

Also, think about education planning. Among other options, consider a tax-advantaged 529 education savings plan.

You’ll want to add your new child to your health insurance plan or obtain a new plan. You might also need to add to your life insurance and get disability coverage.

Bringing a new child into your life is joyful — and by being financially prepared, you can make the whole experience even more rewarding.
