Icro Maremmani was born in Pietrasanta (province of Lucca, Tuscany) on 18th May 1951. He works as a psychiatrist, and professor of addiction medicine at the University of Pisa, Italy. He is president of a number of scientific societies and has published books and academic papers in Italian and in international journals in the field of psychiatry and in that of substance abuse. He is married and has two children. Throughout his life he has lived in Pietrasanta, in the Maremmani family home. His passion for photography began when he was 18.

When I think back to my restless wanderings over the routes open to travellers throughout the world – pathways I perceive as calling on me to come and take photographs there, as part of my destiny – I have to smile in amusement at my quenchless wish to get to know and capture through the play of light whatever still has the power to make me instantaneously shiver with joy.

In this way I tell the story of myself and of my perennial personal emotions.

AUCNS was founded in Viareggio (province of Lucca, Italy), in 1994; it is a no - profit association that aims to promote the spread of scientific knowledge and its application to issues of mental illness and substance abuse. AUCNS is involved in research and teaching activities, and the organization of seminars, conferences and public debates, targeting scientific or popular audiences. Among these events, the most newsworthy are the National Conference of Addictive Diseases, which is held in Italy every two years, The European Opiate Addiction Treatment Association (Europad) Conference, which is held in a European city every two years, and a Europad satellite meeting, which is part of the American Opioid Treatment Association Conference in the USA, and is held every 18 months. AUCNS directly cooperates with national and international associations on the basis of shared purposes and fields of interest, and runs a variety of publications, comprising psychiatry and substance abuse textbooks, and the official journal of Europad, Heroin Addiction and Related Clinical Problems.
