OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!

renee@iconiclife.com

@iconicreneedee

When I graduated college, a friend gave me the famed Dr. Seuss book “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” with a note encouraging me to learn about myself by traveling! She was so right…you find out what you are made of when you eliminate the familiar surroundings of your home, the people you know and sometimes even the language you speak. Stepping out of your comfort zone allows you to learn about other people and cultures and gain a new point of view of the world.

I find traveling to be eye-opening; so many new ideas come to me that I wouldn’t’ve had at home. You will also be surprised to know that I’m an excellent traveler when it comes to putting work aside and savoring the present moment.

It is so often the case when we were editing stories from travel writers or considering places to feature, I say, “Oh, I’ve been there!” When I launched ICONIC LIFE, I knew I could lean on my travels to create content that would inspire others to visit new places. However, over the last few years, starting with 2020 (you know what happened), I have been primarily traveling for business or to see friends…great reasons to travel…but that hasn’t taken me out of the country for a while. I felt like I was not Living Beautifully in the travel department.

Two years ago, I made a three-year plan for the places that I wanted to visit next. As it would work out, one trip would happen early, one would be delayed, and one would be a surprise and just show up. What does that mean?

The year 2025 will be the year of travel for me; I will be combining three years of travel into one, starting with Spain, which will include Portugal…I so want to go! Then, I’m off to Amsterdam. From there, I’ll get on a cruise that will take me all around Great Britain to see castles and cathedrals, ending in Le Havre, France. Since I’m so close, I’m thinking of adding Ireland to my itinerary.

I’m going to bunk down in England or France for 10 days while I await the start of my next trip, which is the Candelaria Design Tour of France. I’ll, of course, report on my adventures, but I won’t be on social media the entire time…remember, I love soaking in the sites with my eyes!

Truth be told, I’m not sure how all of this works with my commitments, but my newly renewed passport will tell the story by the end of this year.

And that is how we came up with the idea of an issue that celebrates travel. This issue features an original piece of artwork on the cover inspired by a travel poster—created and painted by my travel buddy and bestie, Lucia Burns. Thank you for always supporting me and ICONIC LIFE and for sharing your time and talents with us through all the things you do, especially with this fantastic cover!

I feel like I know that woman driving the red Ferrari! She looks like she’s living her best life, and you should, too! So, hit the road; it’s time to get traveling and Live Beautifully!

With Gratitude,

Sleeping on a plane doesn’t have to be a losing battle. You can transform even the most exhausting flights into peaceful in-flight experiences with the right strategies.

CatchingZ’s

Sleeping on planes often remains an elusive skill, even for frequent flyers. The challenge of resting comfortably at 30,000 feet amid cabin noise, fluctuating air pressure and cramped quarters can leave even seasoned travelers arriving at their destinations feeling drained. With a blend of thoughtful preparation, smart choices and a touch of indulgence, you can turn the blue skies into a sanctuary of relaxation and arrive at your destination refreshed and ready to take on your next adventure.

1. PLAN AHEAD: CHOOSE OPTIMAL FLIGHT TIMES AND SEATING

Aligning your flight schedule with your natural sleep patterns can make all the difference, especially on long trips. Overnight flights, for example, offer a built-in opportunity for rest. To maximize comfort, select a window seat, which provides a surface to lean against and minimizes interruptions from other passengers. While not always possible, choosing a direct flight can help maximize your time spent sleeping in the air and allow you to feel refreshed when you land.

Consider selecting a seat with extra legroom for additional space and comfort. If you prioritize luxury and convenience, opt for business or first-class cabins, as they offer ample space and amenities designed to enhance your sleep and overall flight experience.

2. CREATE A COZY CABIN

Investing in high-quality travel accessories can be a game changer in creating a sleep-conducive environment while flying. An eye mask can block out ambient light, while noise-canceling headphones or earplugs muffle the hum of the cabin. Supportive neck pillows, like the Trtl or BCOZZY, keep your head aligned to prevent neck strain, allowing for deeper, uninterrupted sleep. Though these items might claim a bit more space in your carry-on, it’s a small price to pay for arriving well-rested. And don’t forget to dress the part: Choose soft, breathable fabrics and layer up to stay comfortable amidst fluctuating cabin temperatures, and don’t forget to pack a blanket, just in case!

3. HYDRATE AND SKIP THE SLEEP SABOTEURS

While it may be tempting to indulge in caffeine or alcohol to pass the time, it’s advisable to limit or avoid them altogether during air travel. These substances not only delay sleep onset but also impact the quality of sleep, making it difficult to achieve deep, restorative rest during your trip. Hydration is also key to staying comfortable in the air, as dehydration can contribute to fatigue, impact your mood and even worsen jet lag symptoms. Pack a water bottle and be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the flight as well as when you arrive at your destination.

4. MEDICATIONS AND SLEEP AIDS

For those who struggle with flying or want to make long-haul flights more bearable, various sleep aids and relaxation strategies can help. Anti-anxiety medications like Xanax and Ambien, both prescribed by physicians, are popular choices among frequent flyers. Melatonin is a popular alternative for those who prefer a non-prescription approach. This over-the-counter hormone supports the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. It can be particularly effective on longer flights, giving it enough time to work without leaving you feeling groggy.

Regardless of the method you choose, it’s wise to test your preferred sleep aid beforehand to ensure it suits your body and doesn’t leave you feeling worse for wear at your destination.

Traveling with your pet has never been easier.

”AS THE WORLD’S FIRST PET-FIRST AIRLINE , BARK AIR STRIVES TO CREATE A POSITIVE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE FOR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO ARE OFTEN CONSIDERED BAGGAGE.“

Our pets are like family, and sometimes, traveling with family can be an unpleasant experience, especially for our furry family members. The stress of going through airport security and putting your loved one in a not-so-spacious crate under your airplane seat is a recipe for disaster. Our pets deserve better.

What if I told you there was an airline where your pets are treated like VIP passengers? Enter BARK Air by BARK, the world’s most dog-centric company. BARK specializes in making dogs happy with the best products, services and content. BARK’s dog-obsessed team applies its unique, datadriven understanding of what makes each dog special to design playstyle-specific toys, satisfying treats, food for your dog’s breed, effective and easy-to-use dental care, and dog-first experiences that foster the health and happiness of dogs everywhere.

BARK Air is a bespoke pet-friendly airline service that tailors the flight experience to prioritize your pet’s comfort. Both you and your furbaby will be pampered with spacious seating, gourmet treats, a petfriendly beverage and fun surprises during the flight.

BARK Air goes above and beyond to ensure the comfort of their VIPs (very important pets). They prep the flight with calming

pheromones, music and colors that pups prefer. All furry passengers will have access to various aids such as calming treats, noise-canceling earmuffs and calming jackets to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable flight.

As the world’s first pet-first airline, BARK Air strives to create a positive travel

experience for family members who are often considered baggage.

“We believe this initiative will raise awareness of BARK’s mission,” Zahir Ibrahim, CFO at BARK, says. “Given we are not committed to booking flights far in advance, we have a lot of flexibility to opportunistically charter flights during times of high demand.”

BARK Air flights are currently available to the New York City metro area via Teterboro Airport (TEB), with flights to the Los Angeles area via Van Nuys (VNY) and to England via London Stansted Airport (STN). Round-trip flights start at $10,000, and one-way tickets vary from $6,000 to $8,000 depending on the destination.

BARK was founded in 2011 by animal lover Matt Meeker, “When we started BARK in 2011, we were on a mission to disrupt the dog space and create products designed for dogs and their humans. We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over the years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs—from the ground to the skies,” Meeker, co-founder and CEO at BARK, says. “We believe this initiative will help enrich the lives of dogs and their people around the world.”

How NINI has combined UPF protection with fashion-forward attire.

Imagine you’re on a tropical island, the sun is shining, and the rhythm of the water is swaying as it crescendos to the shore, and there you are, sitting on a beach chair—fully clothed. This is the reality for many people due to the sun’s harsh rays; they have no choice between covering up and burning up. Kristine Thompson, co-founder of NINI, had this same dilemma while on a girls’ trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

“I felt completely insecure and covered up in Cabo,” Kristine recalls. “I thought, ‘Okay, this is terrible, there has to be better stuff out there that has sunscreen in it.’ I searched the world over and could not find exactly what I was looking for.”

Kristine realized a gap in the fashionable and protective clothing market, which inspired NINI. The fashion brand utilizes textile technology to provide UPF protection in its clothing.

“One of the important things for us and our brand is educating our customers,” Addy Thompson, co-founder of NINI, says. “A lot of people assume that when you put a T-shirt on, you’re protected from the sun, which isn’t always the case. We can make lightweight fabrics that still have protective properties by using fabrics woven with UPF technology.” This UPF technology is woven into the fabric, so it will protect your skin, even after multiple washes. The sun protection scale ranges from UPF 30-80, depending on the individual item.

Kristine launched NINI with her daughter Addy in 2024. With Addy’s youthful perspective on fashion trends and Kristine’s knowledge of timeless luxury, the mother-daughter duo set to bridge this gap in the fashion industry. The concept behind NINI’s first product collection was to create lightweight clothing options that could be worn from the tennis court to cocktails.

“When the idea first came to us, it really was about creating pieces we would want to wear,” Kristine notes. “We wanted the clothes to be fashionable enough so that a customer could convert from the activity they’re doing during the day to a lunch or cocktail hour.”

“We really wanted to bring a new style to our activewear that we didn’t see on the market, and that was a little bit more high-end and chic,” Addy adds. “We took a lot of inspiration from Parisian style. We wanted activewear that you could wear around the streets of Paris like you’re actually in an outfit rather than a top and leggings.”

NINI’s stylish pieces are ideal for those concerned about the health and well-being of their skin, as this is what the brand’s DNA is all about. Unlike other brands that provide sun protection, NINI creates stylish and elevated luxury designs that women are proud to wear.

“If we can create things and give women the confidence and freedom to feel good about themselves, then I feel I have done my job,” Kristine remarks.

Since finding success in the market with its first product line, NINI is now preparing to launch its second collection of UPF-protected clothing—swimsuit cover-ups.

Whether you’re traveling to a luxe tropical getaway, walking the streets of Paris this summer, or just want stylish and protective clothing to wear while in the scorching Phoenix sun, NINI is here. Kristine and Addy Thompson are paving the way for what will soon become a hot commodity.

INTO the WILD

Luxury meets nature in Costa Rica’s most exclusive retreats.

INTO WILD

On Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula, my kids and I woke up to an orchestra of howler monkeys and tropical birds, their calls filtering through the screens of my luxury villa. This is what happens when pristine wilderness meets world-class comfort—an experience that defines modern luxury in this biodiverse nation. Working with luxury travel designers, Travel Pioneers, who specialize in off-the-beaten-path Latin American journeys, we embarked on an adventure that would challenge conventional notions of high-end travel.

On this journey through Costa Rica, we discovered that true luxury isn’t about gilded excess, it’s about unprecedented access to natural wonders and exceptional comfort. Each carefully selected property along our route proved that sophisticated travel can harmoniously blend family dynamics and environmental consciousness.

The adventure begins with a scenic flight from San José to Puerto Jiménez, soaring over endless canopies of rainforest that blanket nearly half of Costa Rica’s

preserved territories. The first destination, El Remanso Lodge, sets the tone for modern luxury in this biodiverse nation. Nestled deep in the jungle but appointed with sophisticated Scandinavian design, the lodge amalgamates high-end comfort with refinement. Private villas feature clean lines crafted from Rainforest Alliance-certified teak, each offering sweeping views of both ocean and jungle from private terraces complete with plunge pools. The intentional design allows families to spread out comfortably while maintaining the elevated atmosphere that sophisticated travelers expect.

The culinary program at El Remanso epitomizes sustainability while accommodating diverse palates. The restaurant offers an innovative menu that skillfully balances local ingredients with international techniques. The tamarind tuna steak proves particularly memorable,

while the bar program showcases creative cocktails like the Osa Green, a refreshing craft of Cacique, rum, lime and basil with a subtle saline finish. The kitchen’s flexibility in crafting bespoke dishes ensures that even selective diners find satisfaction. Attention to detail extends beyond the plate, with personal touches like sunrise coffee delivery and turndown service, the resort maintains a high standard of comfort despite the wild setting.

Days here flow between guided nature experiences and luxurious relaxation. Expert naturalists lead private tours through the property’s trails, utilizing professional telescopes to bring wildlife encounters into sharp focus—a thrilling experience for nature enthusiasts of any age. For those seeking active pursuits, private surf lessons can be arranged at a secluded beach, which offers both challenge and serenity, with instructors adept at teaching beginners

and more experienced wave-riders. As dusk approaches, nighttime nature walks reveal the jungle’s nocturnal wonders. Be sure to return on time for evening cocktails and fine dining al fresco.

The journey continues to the Arenal region, where Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa presents a different face of Costa Rican luxury. Thanks to Travel Pioneers’ local connections, we were treated to an unexpected highlight en route: a private organic farm that offers an elevated take on local traditions. This exclusive experience, unavailable to the general public, began with a gourmet picnic lunch set in a private pergola. The spread featured sparkling wine, artisanal cheese, charcuterie and fresh local fruits. This was followed by an intimate chocolate-making workshop that traces the legacy of cacao from ancient Aztec nobility to modern artisanal

creations. This experience proves equally engaging for adults and younger participants.

Tabacón itself is a masterpiece of natural luxury. Thermal waters from Arenal Volcano feed a network of pools and cascades woven through manicured tropical gardens. The property harnesses these natural hot springs into various temperature-graduated pools, some maintaining a more natural aesthetic with others offering refined touches like swim-up bars.

A private adults-only section ensures tranquility for those seeking solitude, while family-friendly areas allow for shared enjoyment of the thermal waters. The spa provides world-class treatments and luxurious amenities like plush robes and slippers sized for all guests, demonstrating the resort’s attention to detail.

Throughout our stay, carefully orchestrated logistics ensured seamless transitions between experiences. Our guides and drivers, all hand-selected for their deep local knowledge, transformed simple transfers into opportunities for cultural insight, sharing stories of local life while navigating Costa Rica’s varied terrain.

Our travel designers revealed another hidden gem of Costa Rica’s luxury landscape for our final destination: Pasha Villa in Santa Teresa, where exclusivity reaches new heights. Upon arrival, a staff of twelve ensures every need is anticipated before requests arise. Private villas feature modern design elements in wood, glass and stone, with individual pools and terraces offering perfect vantage points for ocean views. The property’s layout places accommodations just behind a grove of trees off the beach, creating an ideal balance of privacy and accessibility.

Here, luxury manifests in carefully curated experiences and impeccable service. Private dining can be arranged

in your villa and features such dishes as Ayote soup and fresh-caught fish with yuca purée, paired with fine wines like Pouilly Fumé, while alternative options satisfy varying preferences. Activities available during your stay include private horseback riding along the beach at sunset, creating memorable moments for all participants. After a long and relaxing ride, guests might return to find their outdoor shower stocked with premium amenities.

What lingers after this journey is how seamlessly Costa Rica’s finest properties balance world-class comfort with authenticity. These thoughtfully orchestrated experiences prove that true luxury can coexist with—and even enhance—the natural wonders that make this destination exceptional. From private plunge pools overlooking the Pacific Ocean and thermal springs beneath a volcano to intimate chocolate workshops and sophisticated dining experiences, this journey offers a unique brand of luxury that feels both indulgent and purposeful, creating lasting memories for travelers of all ages.

ART ABROAD

Known for its rich culture and history, the United Kingdom is also a strong player in the art world.

The UK is a brilliant mix of historical architecture nestled between contemporary structures, vibrant with creative energy and an ever-expanding art scene. It’s well-known that Pop Art originated in London in the 1950s. Since then, the art form has flourished into a sensation, practiced by famous artists worldwide.

Seventy-five years later, the slate-covered sidewalks and cobblestone streets of Cambridge attest that the continuity of the Pop Art movement is alive and well.

Pop Art is a stark and unexpected contrast from the famous, classical architecture that lines the streets of England. On the side of one street is a 12th-century structure called the Round Church, situated comfortably among the narrow passages of shops and restaurants. On the other side are the colleges of Cambridge that embody all the best of Elizabethan, Neo-Classical and historic medieval towers and turrets that comprise the university.

The scenery would lead one to believe that the art galleries would cater to the majesty of time gone by with moody, dark oil paintings of ancient nobles or still life scenes from a kitchen of the past. While that genre may be available at numerous museums, it can’t compete with the vibrant installations I enjoyed viewing in local galleries such as Clarendon Fine Art.

Van Gogh may have painted “Irises” in 1889, a timeless and beautiful impressionist take on the flowers, but, he would likely never understand why there would be such interest in Mr. Brainwash’s Pop Art interpretation of his work with the painting “Iris.”

“Iris” begins with the recognizably similar brush stroke of the eye-catching blue irises but takes a playful twist with the flowers rising from an internationally recognized

can of Tomato Soup (labeled Tomato Paint). It makes an effortless call-back to one of the most famous Pop Art pieces created by Andy Warhol, “Campbell’s Soup Cans.” The painting is bright, demonstrates genuine artistic talent and is surprising in its subject matter.

Mr. Brainwash (AKA Thierry Guetta) is a celebrated French-born, Los Angeles-based street artist. Another piece of his, “Einstein Love is the Answer,” is a confluence of ideas and images arranged in a collage of layers, exposing thoughts and messages to the viewer. The colors are vibrant in contrast to the black-and-white photo of Albert Einstein in the center. It’s a cheerful work of art with the right amount of unrestricted freedom. Seeing art that doesn’t make you find the message is nice. Instead, it’s presented directly in front of you.

Another artist whose work I found interesting is Doug Hyde. A soup enthusiast, he has also gained notoriety with his simplistic style and loving messaging formed around the soup can labeled “Friendship.” Hyde’s work typically includes his trademark puffy white characters with a 70s-style “Have a nice day” wide grin. His art holds a lot of uplifting images of hearts, repeatedly sending the message of love.

Hyde’s style leaves the viewer undeniably sure of the implied meaning without working for a high-brow interpretation. He expresses several subject matters. Some of his works include animals such as cats, dogs, hedgehogs and mice, each echoing a very pure and generous love for one another.

It is fantastic to see the evolution of Pop Art continue since its inception in 1952 with The Independent Group in London. If it was ever considered a fad, it has proven to be one that won’t fade.

Celebrate the stunning restoration of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Paris is home to a plethora of stunning and ICONIC sights. From the unforgettable musée du Louvre, filled with timeless art and sculptures crafted by our ancestors, to the city’s streets and buildings, which are works of art that radiate a rich history through its beautiful architecture. One building that stands as a symbol of France’s profound history and culture is the Notre Dame Cathedral.

Walking up to the cathedral, you will be taken aback by its grandeur. The Gothic style of architecture, which was highly prominent during its construction in 1163, sets a tone of divinity for this place of worship.

The cathedral’s interior is 427 feet by 157 feet with 115-foot-high ceilings. Two massive Gothic towers crown the western facade,

which is divided into three stories. Its doors are adorned with early Gothic carvings and are surmounted by a row of figures of Old Testament kings.

The building’s exterior carvings of Grotesques— about 54 in total—are an essential architectural element of the cathedral, adorning the upper gallery and adding to the cathedral’s unique character. Large clerestory windows added between 1235 and 1270 infuse the interior with light that exudes a heavenly aura.

The Notre Dame Cathedral has undergone many renovations since it was originally built 862 years ago. During the Renaissance in the 17th century, artistic and architectural tastes evolved, and in 1637, King Louis XIII wanted to make changes to the cathedral as

a symbol of his devotion to the Virgin Mary. He vowed to modify its choir loft and create a high altar.

By the 19th century, Notre Dame Cathedral was in dire need of renovation. With a renewed interest in the building partly due to Victor Hugo’s hit novel, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” architects Jean-BaptisteAntoine Lassus and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc led the restoration in 1844. The cathedral underwent structural changes to bring it closer to its original form. A spire was added to replace the one removed in 1780, the Gallery of Kings was recreated and new decorative elements were introduced.

There were no further renovations planned until 2018. Unfortunately, in 2019, a devastating fire began in the cathedral, which

Photography by Franck

destroyed its spire and caused significant damage to its roof, vaults and interior.

After the fire was contained, the mission was to rebuild and restore the cathedral as it had never been before. The costly restoration, which breathed new life into this ICONIC space, opened its doors to the public in December 2024.

This massive project resurrected the Notre Dame Cathedral from the ashes of the fire just six years prior. Overseen by Rebuilding Notre Dame, the renovation took more than 2,000 architects, historians and skilled trade workers to rehabilitate this beloved site. Marrying centuries-old techniques with state-of-the-art technology, workers significantly upgraded the stability and structure of the building without sacrificing its original character.

To achieve this hefty task, the team utilized digital scans taken of the building in 2015, allowing architects and builders to look at the structure’s idiosyncrasies down to the millimeter.

The cleanup from the fire proved difficult due to lead contamination and clearing melted metal. However, removing the lead contamination created an opportunity to give the cathedral a deep cleaning. Centuries of dirt, grime and candle soot were scrubbed away, leaving the cathedral to sparkle.

Original materials and techniques from the 12th century were used to restore Notre Dame. Carpenters resourced more than 2,500 oak trees to replicate the roof and spire to the exact dimensions of the first building.

The cathedral’s interior boasts opulence and historical depictions throughout. The structure is sound and refreshed yet still holds the rich history and energy from centuries before.

Between the painstaking efforts of the thousands who worked on this restoration and the support of the community and government, this ICONIC landmark has been given the ultimate spa day, allowing it to shine in all its glory. Because of the success of this project, the Notre Dame Cathedral will be viewed and explored by travelers, historians and enthusiasts for centuries to come.

Embark on a 10-day boat trip across the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

The Caribbean Sea is dotted with thousands of islands, ranging from the tourist traps of the cruise circuits to luxury beachfront bungalows on private islands. With hundreds of places to visit in the Caribbean, why go to the British Virgin Islands? For me, it all comes down to the unparalleled freedom of island-hopping by boat.

I came to the British Virgin Islands a year ago to charter a catamaran with a group of new friends. Having never been to these islands, much less done a private charter

experience, I had no expectations other than to catch a glimpse of sea turtles and make uninterrupted progress on the book I was reading. The experience blew me away, as did the camaraderie that forms when living on a boat with relative strangers, the quirky characters you meet at far-flung beach bars and the boundless natural beauty of the Caribbean. But what I loved most about this trip was that every day was a new adventure. With no rigid itinerary, our only concern was keeping the boat running, finding fresh seafood and choosing which idyllic cove to drop anchor in next.

It’s my second time chartering a boat through the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

We began our trip by flying into Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas and grabbed a cab to the Frenchtown marina, only five minutes from the airport. After checking in with the charter company, we walked along the dock to find our vessel, a spacious Fountaine Pajot Saona 47, which served as our vehicle and hotel for the next 10 days. I’m thankful that this sailing catamaran comfortably housed our crew of eight, with each couple getting their own bedroom and bathroom.

While we began our boat trip on St. Thomas, we planned to spend most of our time on several other islands along both the U.S. and British sides of the chain, where beaches and bays would be less crowded by

hotel and cruise ship guests. Our first night was spent at the dock in Charlotte Amalie before sailing on to Maho Bay on St. John, our last stop on the U.S. side before continuing to the British Virgin Islands.

Once in the British Virgin Islands, Sky, my partner and the vessel’s captain, and I spent the afternoon at Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, a sandy-white four-star hotel that spans an entire private island. We dinghied into the marina, our modest vessel dwarfed by the other guests’ catamarans and yachts. We explored the island via golf cart, following winding roads up hills to see tucked-away villas, the pristine sands of North Beach and the garden that provides

fresh ingredients for the resort’s on-site restaurant, Cardamom & Co.

On the island’s east side, we drove up a steep hill, home to private residential properties, where a popular trail leads to the highest point on the island. For ambitious hikers, the reward at the trail’s end is panoramic views of Tortola and Virgin Gorda islands. We could see the outline of The Baths’ towering rock formations and watched planes take off from the airport. Afterward, we enjoyed lunch at Donovan's Reef Marina Bar & Grill, a restaurant overlooking the pool with a swim-up bar and waterslide. I had refreshing mahi mahi tacos and Painkillers—a classic beach cocktail made with coconut, pineapple, rum and nutmeg.

We traveled onward to the North Sound of Virgin Gorda. The North Sound would be the farthest east for many charters before they begin the loop back to their home ports. But for us, it was the launch point to access Anegada, a sandy strip of land only 11 kilometers from Virgin Gorda. Our reasons for pushing onward were plentiful; for me, I was searching for the famous Anegada lobsters, and for Sky, it was the thrill of sailing on the open Caribbean Sea.

The next day, we set off for Anegada bright and early. Our confidence was high as we looked to the horizon to see near-perfect sailing weather. Strong winds, relatively small swells and sunshine would make this trip a breeze.

We dingied over to Potters By The Sea, a beachside bar where NFL jerseys and gimmicky t-shirts swayed from ceiling rafters and pillars covered in decades-old graffiti from past patrons.

After a pre-dinner cocktail and beach walk, our little crew set off for our reservation at

The Lobster Trap. We called ahead with our orders so the restaurant could go out to their traps and get us fresh lobster for our dishes. Seated on the dock-like patio, we split conch fritters, rice and beans, and perfectly blackened lobsters dipped in butter. The following day, we sailed back to Virgin Gorda to Spanish Town.

Our days on the catamaran almost blurred together in their effortless, scenic perfection. Each morning on the boat, I poured a cup of coffee and sat atop the catamaran, the only time I could get away with skipping sunscreen needed to protect me from the blazing Caribbean sun’s UV rays that shine later in the day.

I watched the crews of the other catamarans and sailboats relax with their books and coffee or busy themselves hanging up towels and swimsuits. We lounged, read and swam for the rest of the day as we hung out at the beach. Sky sat atop the boat when we sailed, scanning for reefs and rocks. We all took turns keeping him company, and he entertained us with stories about local pirate history and the illustrious owners of yachts passing by.

from Pirates Bight, snorkeled through sea caves and capped off the day by leaping from the top deck of Willy T’s into the crystal waters —a floating bar and grill that gives “dive bar” a whole new meaning.

We stayed the night docked at Salt Pond Bay on the southeast end of St. John. With moorings for only two boats, it’s an incredibly private and tranquil place to snorkel. All afternoon and the following day, I swam above reef ravines, teeming with swaying anemones and fish in brilliant shades of blue and yellow, all unphased by the occasional swimmer who joined them.

On our last night before returning to Charlotte Amalie, we moored in Christmas Cove, where we stumbled upon an impromptu rave and ordered wood-fired pizzas from Pizza Pi, a takeout-only restaurant on a boat. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we sat on the front of the ship, star-gazed, listened to music and savored our last night in paradise.

The beauty of a sailing trip through the Virgin Islands isn’t just in the stunning beaches, the fresh seafood, or even the thrill of navigating between the islands—it’s in the freedom to explore at your own pace, the camaraderie built over days on the water and the sense of adventure that lingers long after you’ve returned to shore.

Greek

A luxurious escape across Athens, Milos, Paros and Mykonos.

If you’re craving a trip that blends ancient wonders with island luxury, Greece offers an unrivaled experience. Whether exploring the vibrant streets of Athens or retreating to the crystal waters and sundrenched beaches of Milos, Paros and Mykonos, this two-week-long journey promises unforgettable sights and the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Each destination will leave you breathless, from sipping cocktails with Acropolis views to staying in private suites perched over the Aegean Islands. We explored the best Greece has to offer in hotels, dining and unique experiences that truly immerse you in the country’s rich culture.

ATHENS

Where Ancient Meets Modern

Athens is a city where time weaves the past and present together seamlessly. Plaka, a historic neighborhood, remains a favorite with its cobbled streets and neoclassical buildings. On one afternoon walk from Plaka to Kolonaki, we happened upon a serene little square in Agia Ekaterini, home to a peaceful church. The shaded square was a world away from the bustling streets of Athens, an unexpected and tranquil retreat.

If you’re after something off the beaten path, Pharaoh is a must-visit restaurant in a grungy-cool neighborhood often overlooked by tourists. Known for its natural wines, the bartenders expertly guide you through a menu of recommendations tailored to your taste. It’s the perfect place for a sultry evening of tasty drinks and a cool crowd.

One of the best views in Athens is from NEW Hotel’s rooftop. As I sat one evening, sipping tea, the sight of the Acropolis glowing under the moonlight was unforgettable. Athens is not short of excellent restaurants, but Vezené made our trip extra special—its rotating menu is always creative. I had a black pepper ice cream one night that I’m still thinking about.

Kolonaki, an upscale neighborhood, offers refined shopping experiences. Strolling Skoufa Street, you’ll find artisan

shops and boutique jewelers selling one-of-a-kind pieces. Finish your day with a sunset view from Lycabettus Hill—a panoramic spot that wraps up a perfect day in Athens.

MILOS

Untouched Beauty and Coastal Charm

Milos is a gem among the Cyclades islands, known for its raw beauty and tranquil beaches. We stayed at the intimate White Pebble Suites, where a few select rooms have terraces that open directly to the ocean. With crystal-clear water in view, breakfast here is a perfect start to any day. The hotel also has a spa and a boutique featuring local designers, adding a touch of luxury to your stay. It’s just a short walk to Pollonia, a charming town where you can dine in tavernas, shop and explore.

Medusa, in Mandrakia, is a restaurant everyone recommends, and for good reason. We arrived early and found the setting magical. Right on the water, it felt like a scene from a movie, complete with local cats meandering by as we enjoyed fresh seafood with the best view on the island.

Of course, no trip to Milos is complete without visiting Sarakiniko Beach. While the landscape draws many, few know it’s also perfect for swimming. Pack a towel and dive into the sparkling waters. I have a framed picture of my husband floating on his back in the blue waters—a memory now immortalized at home.

For a more authentic experience, Firopotamos Beach is a quieter escape. This small fishing village has local accommodations that give you a taste of the island’s history. You can also explore Plaka, a historic neighborhood, at night, with its quaint streets and live music, or head to the Kleftiko Caves for an awe-inspiring boat ride through once-pirate hideouts.

PAROS

The Artistic Heart of the Cyclades

We headed to Paros next, where we stayed at Minois, a luxurious seaside escape. Naoussa, a charming fishing village, is the heart of Paros’ social scene, where you’ll find vibrant nightlife and incredible dining.

One of our top recommendations is to indulge in an olive oil tasting at Petra Farm, where you can sample local oils and enjoy a farm-fresh lunch. This unforgettable experience connects you to the island’s deep agricultural roots.

Dinners in Naoussa are magical, with top picks like Stilvi, offering modern takes on Mediterranean classics, and Sigi Ikthios, a seafood haven. If you’re in the mood for something a bit livelier, Barbarossa will not disappoint. For a quieter evening, a sunset walk through the village’s narrow streets reveals hidden shops and galleries.

MYKONOS

The Ultimate Relaxation Retreat

While Mykonos is often associated with nightlife, we sought its more serene side. We stayed at Cali Mykonos, a breathtaking property that perfectly blends modern luxury with the island’s natural beauty. Nestled into a private cove, the villas are beautifully designed with private pools overlooking the Aegean Sea, and every detail of the hotel is impeccable. The experience here is pure tranquility, with personalized services that make you feel like you’re in your own private paradise.

Days at Cali Mykonos are best spent lounging by the infinity pool or taking a private boat to Spilia for lunch, where the boat dock transforms into an unforgettable dining

experience. If you’re in the mood for a more active day, Rizes, a folklore farmstead, offers bread-making classes that provide a hands-on way to explore traditional Mykonian culture. It’s a great way to step outside the glitz of Mykonos Town and retreat inland to the village of Ano Mera, where you’ll find authentic tavernas and quiet charm.

Whether indulging in farm-to-table meals at M-eating or basking in the understated elegance of Alemàgou, Mykonos offers a slower pace for those seeking a refined yet relaxed getaway.

Greece offers many experiences, from bustling cities to tranquil island retreats. Whether chasing sunsets in Athens or diving into the blue waters of Milos, your Greek adventure will be filled with culture, beauty and indulgence.

The new luxury sleeper train traverses England and Wales in style.

FABOARD

amed for its ICONIC Venice Simplon-OrientExpress and Andean Explorer, Belmond introduces its newest luxury sleeper train, the Britannic Explorer. And like the others, Britannic Explorer is more than just a train; it’s a pampered escape wrapped in one spectacular, slow-moving package. Featuring the glamour of a bygone era paired with charming and quirky British details and the modern amenities expected by today’s elite traveler, Belmond’s newest train redefines luxury travel with grand design, world-class service and rich cultural immersion.

The Britannic Explorer evokes a sense of nostalgia for the golden age of rail travel with its three Great Britain itineraries. The routes provide an enriching and educational experience, encouraging travelers to delve into the stories, art and heritage of its destinations. Departing from London, the three-night journeys traverse the spectacular natural landscapes of Cornwall, The Lake District and Wales.

Each route is carefully curated to celebrate Britain’s beauty, and offers privileged access to some of the region’s most ICONIC destinations. By day, guests can enjoy optional off-train guided excursions at world-class art galleries, breathtaking national parks and historically prosperous cities. Highlights include a private tour and dinner at the renowned Hauser & Wirth Somerset (the pioneering, world-class contemporary art gallery and multipurpose arts, education and community destination) and its on-site restaurant Da Costa, guided hikes through picturesque Wales, wild swimming in the stunning landscapes of the Lake District and a visit to Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens in Cornwall. By night, passengers can unwind and mingle in the heart of the train—the botanically inspired Bar located in the observation car.

The 18 cabins—three grand suites and 15 suites—offer relaxing havens after a day of extraordinary exploration. Each is crafted in Britain and designed to make the journeys as remarkable as the destinations. The aesthetic? Understated Belmond sophistication with British whimsy. Think rich wood paneling, plush velvet, antique-inspired furnishings and Victorian garden flourishes.

Large panoramic windows invite passengers to take in the passing scenery in absolute comfort. For those seeking additional relaxation, the train offers a full-service wellness suite with soothing treatments, massages and therapies utilizing circadian principles to promote healing. Additionally, off-board wellness and fitness excursions focus on mindfulness, movement and adventure.

Fine dining experiences curated by renowned Chef Simon Rogan celebrate local products and the richness of Britain’s diverse regions. Rogan is known for his innovative approach and exceptional quality across his restaurants; he holds eight Michelin stars and two Michelin Green stars worldwide. From lunch to custom afternoon tea and dinner, Rogan’s menus will change with the seasons, and all are carefully paired with select biodynamic wines from the modern frontier of English harvests.

Two restaurant cars, Malva and Samphire, feature interiors inspired by Great British greenery—from the intricate patterns of a cultivated English country garden to the soft romance of a flourishing wildflower meadow. And the Victorian apothecary-inspired bar offers a curated selection of cocktails and spirits.

Yet, despite all of its numerous amenities, it is not just the elegant decor or Michelin-level food that makes the Britannic Explorer a rail stand out; it’s the service. The staff is discreet, polished and omnipresent in the best possible way. The attentive crew ensures that every desire is met, leaving guests free to relax and enjoy the finer things in life.

The Britannic Explorer is a bit like the modish offspring of an old-world royal train and a high-end boutique hotel. It is the train for travelers who want their adventure served with a side of whimsicality and a touch of glamour. Welcome aboard, where the scenery is breathtaking, the food is Michelin-worthy, and every moment feels like a picture postcard.

BORA BORA

Bora
Bora

So Great You Say It Twice

Breathtaking landscapes, crystal-clear waters, vibrant culture and a plethora of activities capture the hearts of visitors.

Hailed as the quintessential tropical paradise, Bora Bora is truly a “have to see it to believe it” destination. The stunning South Pacific island, which is surrounded by a vibrant lagoon framed by a barrier reef, is best known for its crystalline, turquoise waters that change hue with every cloud pass. Aqua, cerulean, cyan and teal— photos cannot do justice to the clarity. At dusk, the water is complemented by awe-inspiring pink and gold sunsets.

Equally enthralling is the lush, green landscape from which the intoxicating aroma of the local tiare flower (sometimes referred to as the Tahitian gardenia) emanates. And who doesn’t love an overwater bungalow, an icon of the Bora Bora visitor experience?

Part of French Polynesia, Bora Bora lies about 165 miles northwest of Tahiti, the largest of the region’s 118 islands and atolls. The majestic Mount Otemanu dominates the island. This volcanic peak rises dramatically from the island’s center and is the picturesque backdrop to nearly all of Bora Bora’s visitor accommodations. Considered a sacred site by locals, Mount Otemanu embodies the island’s spirit and serves as a symbol of strength and protection for the community. The cultural tapestry is steeped in ancient lore and artfully expressed through traditional music, dance and crafts proudly shared with visitors.

Bora Bora starts to work its magic upon arrival at the island’s tiny airport, where reps from each of its luxe resorts await to further transport guests to their exotic locales. The Conrad, The St. Regis, The Westin, The Intercontinental and the Four Seasons, among others, are represented, and it’s the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora’s presentation of a tiare flower lei to each arriving passenger that immediately captures imaginations.

Four Seasons guests are then whisked away within a custom-crafted water taxi. The 20-minute ride is exhilarating and provides the first view of the resort’s ICONIC overwater bungalows, 108 in total, spanning four tentacle-like piers that fan out over the lagoon.

Each bungalow is a spacious suite with a deck, sun loungers and a lovely Polynesian design. (Some come with private infinity pools.) The suites are private, providing a sense of seclusion and making them ideal for romantic getaways. For those seeking more space, the resort boasts seven standalone beachfront villa estates of varying sizes. Perfect for family gatherings, extended stays or group getaways, each spans from one-third to more than a full acre.

Island culture is embodied within all of Bora Bora’s resorts. At the Four Seasons, a robust calendar of daily and weekly classes and workshops introduces guests to Polynesian

tradition and the generosity of the Polynesian people. Enjoy ukulele lessons and shell necklace making. Learn about the famed Tahitian black pearl formation process, or take a botanical tour of the property and explore the island’s flora and fauna. Learn about the importance of coral reefs to the health of our oceans and marine life by taking part in the resort’s coral grafting program. Guests can “adopt” a piece of coral they name and hang within the resort’s fabulous Vaitea Lagoon Sanctuary, which teems with a colorful array of marine life.

The coral is cared for by on-site marine biologists who will ultimately transplant it to the reef and provide updates to the adopter. The experience includes a buoyant snorkel through the lagoon (the water’s salinity makes it easy to float), home to octopus, lizardfish, Picasso trumpet fish, soldier fish, firefish, unicorn fish, spotted puffer fish, parrotfish, peacock damselfish, clownfish and butterfly fish, among others. It’s like swimming in a stocked aquarium— the experience is a mesmerizing highlight. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also ideal ways to explore the region’s calm waters.

The South Pacific’s rich history of healing massages and therapeutic treatments—called taurumi—is passed from generation to generation, and the Four Seasons’

Te Mahana Spa radiates the unique balance of energy and relaxation that defines Bora Bora. The cathedral-like spa, surrounded by native trees and fragrant Kahaia blossoms, offers natural therapies extracted from native fruits and herbs. Book the spacious overwater Fare Miti Spa Suite to enjoy views of the lagoon’s active marine life during your massage. Its two massage-table face cradles are positioned directly over glass flooring, allowing a facedown view of the lagoon’s underwater activity.

Local cuisine is well-represented by the Four Seasons’ varied restaurants where seafood reigns. An average stay at the resort is about four nights. With four restaurants on the property, guests can enjoy a different dining experience each evening. Arii Moana offers casually elegant dining with Mediterranean classics, while Vaimiti offers an overwater setting and Asian cuisine. a modern twist, and Tere Nui, in addition to serving daily breakfast, offers themed, weekly dinners such as Oro’a Night—a celebration of Polynesian culture that includes song, dance and a bountiful buffet of island favorites.

While Four Seasons’ lovely MoeMoea boutique offers an array of souvenir apparel and accessories, some might desire a more permanent keepsake. The ancient Polynesian custom of tatau (tattoo) can be arranged for that. Tatau was once an indicator of the passage from childhood to adulthood, social status and profession. The traditional method entailed dipping a wooden comb of fine needles into the soot of a burned candlenut and tapping into the skin. Both traditional and modern techniques are available to resort guests.

Finally, while French is the official language in Bora Bora, Tahitian is preserved amongst locals and is widely spoken, as is English. With only 16 letters and a mere 1,000 words, Tahitian is easier to learn than other languages. You’ll be saying “hello”— ia Ora na (yo-rah-nah), “thank you”—mauru’uru (mah-roo-roo), and “I never want to leave”—aita roa vau e hinaaro e faaru’e (eye-tah roh-ah vah-oo eh hee-nah-roh eh fah-roo-eh) in no time.

Decadent dining around the globe.

The dining experience is a large part of why people love traveling. They enjoy igniting their taste buds and embarking on culinary journeys that enrich their palate and soul. Fine dining is a competitive industry, and good restaurants with good food can be found on every continent and, depending on your destination, on every street block.

However, discovering those few restaurants that breach the threshold from good to great or great to extraordinary can be challenging. That’s why we have curated a list of fine dining establishments that will take your dining experience to the next level.

Arzak in San Sebastián, Spain; Alex Dilling at Hotel Café Royal in London, England; and Quay in Sydney, Australia—each restaurant offers unique culinary fare. One thing they all have in common is that they dedicate themselves to the plate to provide one-of-a-kind culinary experiences meant to be savored and applauded.

ARZAK

San Sebastián, Spain

Serving modern Basque fare to the patrons and visitors of San Sebastián, Arzak is a three-Michelin-star restaurant rooted in family history with an eagerness to front-run innovation.

Arzak’s story began when Juan Mari Arzak’s grandparents built the house where the restaurant currently stands. Initially, it was a wine cellar and tavern, but it was later converted into a restaurant by Arzak’s parents. In 1966, Juan Mari Arzak took over the restaurant with his mother. She was his mentor in creating traditional Basque cuisine, to which he began to experiment with innovations to elevate the dish without sacrificing its character. This curiosity led him to come up with his own recipes.

His talent soon attracted attention. At 32, he received the National Gastronomy Award, and the Arzak Restaurant earned its first star from the prestigious Michelin Guide in 1974.

Fast-forward a couple of decades when Elena Arzak, Juan’s daughter, joined the restaurant. She studied hospitality management in Switzerland and later worked in the great kitchens of Europe,

including Maison Troisgrosin in Ouches, France, Louis XV in Monte Carlo, Le Gavroche in London, Antica Ostería del Ponte in Italy and El Bulli in Spain.

In May 2001, she received the Chef de l’Avenir award from the International Academy of Gastronomy. In 2010, the Spanish Academy of Gastronomy awarded her the National Gastronomy Prize. And in 2012, she was crowned Veuve Clicquot’s Best Female Chef of the World. These accolades testify to her commitment to quality and passion for her craft.

Traditional Basque cuisine paired with a quirky and unique presentation gives the dish a playful aspect while showcasing sophistication with a rich flavor palate. Fresh ingredients are sourced daily from local markets, taking center stage on the plate.

As one of the premier destinations to stay in the heart of London, the opulent and charming Hotel Café Royal delivers service and refinement that go above and beyond what even the most discerning traveler would expect, especially in the culinary category.

His namesake restaurant opened at Hotel Café Royal in 2022, establishing him as the chef behind some of the most imaginative dishes on the London culinary scene.

Dilling’s modern take on traditional French cuisine perfectly demonstrates Hotel Café Royal’s reputation for excellence through his visually pleasing and flavorful dishes. QUAY

Sydney, Australia

Imagine treating yourself to high-class food while viewing one of the Seven Wonders of the World as your backdrop. That experience is exactly one you will have at the acclaimed restaurant Quay in Sydney, Australia.

Situated on the oceanfront of Sydney Harbor, Quay boasts outstanding views of the crystalline waters and the Sydney Opera House. Quay’s reputation is equally outstanding, as it is deemed one of the country’s most celebrated restaurants. Quay has received Three Hats in the Good Food Guide for 22 consecutive years.

Peter Gilmore, award-winning chef and founder of Quay, started the restaurant to showcase his culinary finesse. Gilmore was born in Sydney. He was inspired to cook at a young age and started his apprenticeship at 16. He then spent his 20s working in kitchens overseas and in New South Wales, developing his style.

Gilmore works closely with the farmers, fishermen, producers and artisans who cultivate bespoke produce exclusively for Quay. His menu is heavily influenced and inspired by the ocean and includes such dishes as raw Hervey Bay scallops paired with young walnuts, sea cucumber, smoked eel cream and Murray cod roe, and White Coral green turtle egg plum. His compelling dishes always impress with visuals and flavors from the moment the plate is placed before you until the last bite.
