JUF Day School Innovation Grant Recipients
Brandeis University Teacher Leadership Program ICJA Science Chair and chemistry teacher Mrs. Chavee Gottlieb was awarded the Brandeis Jewish Day School Fellowship as part of their Teacher Leadership Program. This prestigious 13 month course of study is an opportunity for talented educators at Jewish day schools to gain the knowledge and skills they need to motivate and mentor fellow teachers, collaborate with administrators, orchestrate school reform and influence education policy. Mrs. Gottlieb continued on at Brandeis after the fellowship ended, earning a second Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on teacher leadership.
Student to Student was designed to combat anti-Semitism and foster knowledge and understanding of contemporary Jewish life through face-to-face presentations in public and parochial high schools with low to no Jewish population. This type of far reach did not go unnoticed and student adviser Mrs. Alissa Zeffren was awarded a JUF grant of $25,650 toward expanding the Student to Student program into more schools in the Chicagoland area. We anticipate impacting over 3,000 students next year with the additional financial support.

OU Women's Initiative The OU Women’s Initiative works with Orthodox communities in the U.S. and Canada to identify and address women’s spiritual, educational, and communal needs. Mrs. Lynn Kraft, the Tanach Department Chair, Israel Guidance Counselor, and Mechanechet at ICJA was hand selected as a teacher for this program. In this leadership role, she has been a nationally-featured teacher lecturing about Jewish holidays, Tanach, Rosh Chodesh, and Tefillah.

ICJA Physics teacher, Mr. Allen Sears, was chosen to attend the prestigious and exclusive International Teachers Week at CERN. CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research, located on the Swiss-French border near Geneva. It is the site of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) where the Higgs Boson, 1 of the 17 known particles, was discovered around seven years ago. Only 4 teachers were chosen from the United States to attend. Mr. Sears will attend the 2-week program to work collaboratively with physics teachers from around the world on integrating modern physics topics into the classroom. Funding was provided by people throughout the community who saw the value in this exceptional initiative.
