Message from our Dean Dear ICJA Family: What an unexpected, even historic, past year this has been! And in spite of the challenges of educating through a pandemic and going virtual quite literally overnight, this was an impressive year of growth and learning for our entire school community.

Academically, our students and teachers were recognized for their excellence. Our graduates were accepted to renowned universities, yeshivot, and seminaries. And then, when the pandemic hit, our school seamlessly and successfully transformed into an online experience so that we could continue offering the finest general and Judaic education despite the pandemic's challenges.

But what continues to make me so very proud to be an ICJA alumnus, a parent of alumni, and ICJA teacher and dean is how everyone – teachers, students and parents – came together to rise to the challenges of this past year. Teachers who had never taught online learned to do so with one day's notice. Students who never learned online learned to adapt and succeed in their studies (see this year's AP and Jerusalem Exam results). And parents who suddenly found themselves working from home were still able to support our efforts to the fullest.

Our teachers expanded their repertoire in technology and new methodologies. And our students inspired us with their acts of chesed, their leadership and scholarship.

But beyond the thousands of hours of online learning, we came together to celebrate in new ways. First came the Edward A. Crown Scholarship Dinner, which went online and was attended by more than 400 people. Celebrations of Yom HaAtzmaut and memorials for Yom HaShoah and Yom HaZikaron were created online. And extracurricular programs - from concerts to game shows to preserve our sense of community, were broadcast online. We were able to welcome alumni and working parents to events they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to attend.

We were apart, and yet, in some ways, we were brought even closer together.

Throughout the year, your support of ICJA enabled and inspired us to reach our goals – even when we had to reevaluate and recreate those goals mid-year. In spite of finishing our annual campaign remotely and virtually, we raised more scholarship dollars than ever before, from more people than ever before.

Three times a day, we read the Shema where we are commanded to teach our children and speak the words of Torah (‫)ושננתם לבניך ודברת בם‬. But, the Torah continues with the command that these teachings should extend when we are at home and on the road. In other words, the inspiration of Torah must be ever-present in our lives. For nearly eight decades, ICJA has taught students to be inspired and proud Jews, prepared to engage and ennoble the world by taking the teachings of Torah and general knowledge everywhere. This rang true more than ever for ICJA this year. But this would have never been possible without your partnership.

Thank you for joining with us in this sacred task. Thank you for supporting our efforts. Thank you for helping us realize the dreams of generations past—who never could have imagined what our school year looked like–and generations to come!

Year in Review Rising to the Occasion: ICJA Transitioning to

Beyond the Virtual Classroom

and Thriving in Online Education As schools were closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ICJA administration created a virtual high school overnight.

On Friday we ended our week, expecting to see our students again on Monday. But then Governor Pritzker made his announcement, and schools were closed. Sunday, we met online with our faculty, and Monday, our students came to pick up their things while faculty met to prepare. We worked for a seamless continuing educational experience over Zoom.

By Tuesday morning, our students and staff were in virtual classes for nearly a full schedule. ICJA was fortunate to be able to become a fully functioning virtual high school in a weekend while most schools around the country scrambled to teach online. We at ICJA had laid the groundwork for this unforeseeable disruption to our school year several years ago when we became a one-to-one device school. Students and teachers have been working from iPads for years, using the best of technology for textbooks, educational software, a rich library of Judaic texts, and engaging classroom opportunities.

Thanks to our educational technology team Mrs. Olivia Friedman and Rabbi Binyomin Segal, teachers were supported in the tech they needed in order to maintain a classroom online and to translate their style of teaching to a virtual setting.

We were extremely proud to be able to offer our students the continuity of an outstanding education, the The emotional support, and social interaction they effort that each teacher has made to needed in 2020. This was Jewish education adjust to new technology and at its very finest.

As important as addressing the education component of online learning, we felt it even more important to consider the social and emotional needs of our students.

Our teachers and staff have reached out to students and families to make sure people stayed connected.

Our social services department, led by Mr. Phil Zbaraz, was available 24/6 for our students and faculty, but also reached out to students experiencing difficulty during the stay-at-home order.

Each week of online learning, we surprised the students with special programming including a concert by Simcha Leiner, a comedy show with ICJA alum Eli Lebowicz, game shows playing the popular Let's Make a Deal and Family Feud, and frequent Torah classes. Even with the modified class schedule, our staff and students continued to prioritize Torah, general studies, davening, and finding time to “be together” during and outside of class.

Through innovative online initiatives and community building, our faculty and staff fostered an environment of growth and opportunity. The entire Ida Crown Jewish Academy is incredibly proud of our team for their devotion to educating and nurturing our students. Thank you for rising to the occasion and soaring above and beyond.

Jacob Miller was named a National Merit Scholar, the highest academic recognition one can achieve from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It is a national distinction that puts a student at the pinnacle of academic achievement.

Of the 1.6 million high school students who enter per year, 50,000 receive recognition from the National Merit Scholarship program, with only half of those students being named a National Merit Scholar.

ICJA Mathletes finished strong in our division taking 2nd place in the oral competition, with the Freshmen team taking 2nd place overall and the Sophomore team taking 3rd.

Tova Kahan and Yaakov Rosenberg were also National Merit commended.

Shira David finished in 2nd place in the National Yeshiva University High School Girls Bekiut Competition.

Our students received over 95% on the Jerusalem Exam of Hebrew University.

Athletics Boys Basketball For the first time in ICJA Boys Basketball history, the varsity team won the co-championship of the Chicago Prep Conference. This was led by our three all-conference players (most ever) Benny Albom, Micah Cohen, and Josh Goltz.

Coach Lee Gruen also won Conference Coach of the year. Our Sophomore team made it to the conference championship for the first time in five years and our Varsity team made it to the State Regional Finals also for the first time in five years.

Cross Country In a historic event for Ida Crown Jewish Academy and the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), ICJA hosted the first ever non-Saturday Regional Cross Country Race as part of the Illinois State Championship Tournament.

Ida Crown has been the dominant wrestling team over the course of a quarter century at Wittenberg competition.

Boys Wrestling The ICJA Wrestling team competed in its 25th Annual Henry Wittenberg National Yeshiva High School Invitational Wrestling Tournament at the Frisch School. ICJA is one of four schools to have participated in every Wittenberg since its inception. This was Coach Doug Klein’s 28th year coaching ICJA Wrestling as well as coaching ICJA through all 25 years competing in Wittenberg. Over that span, ICJA has won the team title eight times and claimed sixty-seven individual championships.

Athletics Lady Aces Varsity Basketball

ICJA girls basketball won "Sportsmanship of the Year'' award, as voted on by the coaches of the conference.

The ICJA Lady Aces JV team had an impressive and award winning season this year, taking 3rd place in our conference tournament.

Get to Know Our Athletics Director

Ms. Brittany Peters began her career at ICJA in 2016 as the Assistant Girls Varsity Basketball and Soccer Coach, both sports she has loved and excelled in since childhood. ICJA offered her the opportunity to take on a larger role within our athletics department this past year as the Athletics Director. Prior to working at ICJA, Ms. Peters received a college scholarship to play for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers' women's basketball team, followed by a season playing professionally in the WNBA for the Minnesota Lynx.

ICJA point guard Lior Pinchot featured in the Chicago Tribune for helping lead the girls basketball team to victory.

Fencing The Aces Fencing team had great improvement from the returning fencers and the very naturally talented freshmen! We competed against some of the strongest teams in Illinois.

New Trier and DeerďŹ eld/Highland Park High Schools were challenged by our epee and foil teams. The strength of each squad was conďŹ dently led by upperclassmen in epee and experienced foil fencers. It was amazing to see the progress of the athletes, not only in their skill level, but in their responsibility to take on tasks and grow as the season went on.

AIPAC

Our very own Ms. Susan Sennett was selected to give the opening remarks at AIPAC’s Policy Conference to students, teachers, and advisors from across the country, an honor given only to the top advisors. At AIPAC’s conferences, our students learned about the issues facing the United States-Israel relationship and attended programming to gain advocacy and lobbying skills, further developing their role as ambassadors for Israel. Following presentations, students went to Capitol Hill and used their new skills lobbying their representative to advocate for Israel. Because of ICJA's continued commitment to advocating on behalf of Israel, we have been proud to send at least 10 students to the Policy Conference each year, made possible by The Sam Gorenstein Scholars Fund and subsidies by AIPAC.

Yom Ha'Atzmaut There is no day more special and beloved to ICJA than Yom Ha'Atzmaut. The celebration is a school and community favorite that we eagerly anticipate every year since 1948 when the students of the Chicago Jewish Academy celebrated the creation of Israel. This year we marked the 72nd birthday of our homeland in a unique way, taking the program online. Though it was virtual, we were still able to capture the excitement and enthusiasm of the day. This program has been made possible by the Gertz Family in memory of community pillars Paul and Doris Rosenberg z’l.

The celebration began from Israel with inspired words of Torah from a modern day Jewish leader and world-renowned teacher, Racheli Fraenkel.

We were joined by our Consul General Aviv Ezra for a passionate and strong presentation about our unwavering love for the land and the people of Israel.

Celebrating the 72nd birthday of our homeland together.

The celebration continued with some light hearted fun playing the popular trivia game, Israel Family Feud. Students pulled out their knowledge of Israeli history, culture, food and more to win prizes.

The event culminated in an exclusive ICJA concert with Israeli singing sensation Ishay Ribo, live from Israel. His music uplifted us on this very special day.

ICJA students are proud leaders in building relationships with our neighboring communities.

COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS: The Middleton Mentorship Initiative is an amazing opportunity for our students to provide chesed to our neighbors in the Skokie community. Only four years old, this program has grown to include 12 ICJA students. The students at Middleton enjoyed working with our students and the ICJA mentors had a positive experience as well. Some of their assignments were helping children grades 2-5 with reading, writing, math, and advanced math as well as helping in special education classrooms.

ICJA Partners with JUF, JCC & Camp Moshava Core to ICJA’s mission is our involvement and commitment to community. This year when the pandemic happened, ICJA made our facility available to several partner organizations. The JCC housed a unit of their camp so that the children could be socially distanced. The school was also a drop-off site for JUF’s TOV food drive, and was also the site for special programing of Camp Moshava.

We are so proud that ICJA seniors Sammy Moscovitch and Josh Pogonitz were both named JUF 18 Under 18 Honorees!

Sammy Moscovitch is the President of Chicago Yachad, an organization that is dedicated to the needs of Jewish individuals with disabilities, ensuring their inclusion in every aspect of life. Sammy works tirelessly as an advocate for people with disabilities and selflessly does not take community service hours for his work with Yachad.

Josh Pogonitz gave a powerful and eloquent speech earlier this year for No Shame On U, an organization dedicated to eliminating the stigma associated with mental health conditions and established by ICJA alumna Miriam Ament ('89). Josh discussed his personal struggles and journey regarding mental health. He has transformed his own pain into the tool that will help others take steps towards hope.

Beyond the Classroom

TORAH

Siyum HaShas ICJA students were given an incredible, once-in-alifetime opportunity to take a two-day trip to New York for the 13th Global Siyum HaShas at MetLife Stadium.

These students earned their spot by doing the most Torah learning outside of school and joining over 200,000 participants across cities and countries worldwide to celebrate Torah. As meaningful as the event itself was, ICJA took it to the next level the following day by arranging for a private shiur with the YU Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Hershel Schachter shlit'a. The students were overjoyed by this unique experience with such a great Torah giant. Never missing an opportunity to reconnect with our former students, the group met ICJA alumni for lunch after the shiur.

"Attending the siyum was incredibly inspiring and uplifting. During a time when anti-Semitism was on the rise in New York, it was amazing to see hundreds of thousands of Jews come together despite all the attacks. It really changed how I view the power of Judaism and the loving community around me," said Liat Mott, Senior.

This trip was generously sponsored by the Schwartz family in memory of Zaide Robert Berezin z"l.

ICJA Summer Kollel

Modern Jewish Thought and Spirituality The Machshava Curriculum is a pilot project developed by ICJA teachers who participated in a special Professional Learning Community (PLC) as part of their professional development and collectively chose to emphasize a curriculum of Jewish values and beliefs.

The wheels were set in motion to develop a four-year program on Jewish thought. Tied closely into another initiative emphasizing inspiration, key lay leaders and staff identified ways to add inspiration to our student body’s dayto-day lives at ICJA. They developed a popular weekly Whatsapp group dvar Torah, added photos of students around the building, and structured Jewish classes to include more discussion focusing on Jewish ideas and philosophy.

Simultaneously, a mechanech program for boys and mechanechet program for girls was expanded, reinforcing that ICJA is a community and not just a school.

This summer Rabbi Yitzi Sprung and Rabbi Moshe Simkovich imagined how they could create a special program for ICJA students.

Their ideas became an initiative staffed by volunteers from ICJA faculty and community rabbis who studied with our students from 9:30am-12:15pm Monday-Thursday for four weeks. Students were rewarded for their commitment with a $100 stipend per week.

Funding was provided by people throughout the community who saw the value in this exceptional initiative .

JUF Day School Innovation Grant Recipients

Brandeis University Teacher Leadership Program ICJA Science Chair and chemistry teacher Mrs. Chavee Gottlieb was awarded the Brandeis Jewish Day School Fellowship as part of their Teacher Leadership Program. This prestigious 13 month course of study is an opportunity for talented educators at Jewish day schools to gain the knowledge and skills they need to motivate and mentor fellow teachers, collaborate with administrators, orchestrate school reform and influence education policy. Mrs. Gottlieb continued on at Brandeis after the fellowship ended, earning a second Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on teacher leadership.

Student to Student was designed to combat anti-Semitism and foster knowledge and understanding of contemporary Jewish life through face-to-face presentations in public and parochial high schools with low to no Jewish population. This type of far reach did not go unnoticed and student adviser Mrs. Alissa Zeffren was awarded a JUF grant of $25,650 toward expanding the Student to Student program into more schools in the Chicagoland area.

We anticipate impacting over 3,000 students next year with the additional financial support.

OU Women's Initiative The OU Women’s Initiative works with Orthodox communities in the U.S. and Canada to identify and address women’s spiritual, educational, and communal needs. Mrs. Lynn Kraft, the Tanach Department Chair, Israel Guidance Counselor, and Mechanechet at ICJA was hand selected as a teacher for this program.

In this leadership role, she has been a nationally-featured teacher lecturing about Jewish holidays, Tanach, Rosh Chodesh, and Tefillah.

“ICJA is proud to foster an environment of growth and opportunities for our teachers and staff to explore the world of education outside the classroom.” Mr. Sears

ICJA Physics teacher, Mr. Allen Sears, was chosen to attend the prestigious and exclusive International Teachers Week at CERN. CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research, located on the Swiss-French border near Geneva. It is the site of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) where the Higgs Boson, 1 of the 17 known particles, was discovered around seven years ago.

Only 4 teachers were chosen from the United States to attend. Mr. Sears will attend the 2-week program to work collaboratively with physics teachers from around the world on integrating modern physics topics into the classroom. Funding was provided by people throughout the community who saw the value in this exceptional initiative.

Ari Strulowitz ('05) is being honored by the JUF as a 36 Under 36 honoree this year as the Director of Camp Nageela Midwest. He works with Jewish youth, helping them develop into inspired and committed community members. Through his leadership, he helped turn Nageela into a flourishing, successful, and innovative nonprofit organization.

Empowered to Lead Max Dayan ('06) is a businessman and the Executive Director of the Kehilla Fund.

"Due to the unique features of the school such as the smaller class size and extensively available extracurricular activities, ICJA was part of an environment that helped develop my leadership skills, enabling me to become the entrepreneur I am today.”

Top Jewish Basketball Players in the Nation ICJA Alumni Kevin ('15) and Ryan ('18) Bokor competed on the YU Maccabees Basketball Team for an award winning season as some of the top Jewish players in the nation.

ICJA Alumni Getting Together and Making a Difference 4 ICJA alumni Rocky (Fishman) Brody ('88), Jonathan Polin ('88), Murray (Meir) Chasan (’76), and Yuri Shoshan ('85), participated in the 20th Annual Wheels of Love, a 5 day charity bike ride for the benefit of Alyn Children's Hospital of Jerusalem.

Three Generations of ICJA United ICJA alumnae Elana (Lichtenstein) Pnini (’01), Rachel (Levin) Weinstein, wife and mother of ICJA alumni, Adina (Trattner) Appel (’75), and Sharon (Yellin) Weingarten (’73), found themselves working together at Bar Ilan University.

Though their ICJA connection was a surprise, their shared memories brought them closer together.

JEWISH DAY SCHOOL GUARANTY TRUST FUND

HEEREY SCHOLARSHIPS

Thank you to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and the generous donors to the Jewish Day School Guaranty Trust Fund. In Fiscal Year 2019, the Fund distributed $67,356.40 to ICJA and $1,328,406.44 in total since the Fund started. Gifts to the Fund are considered commitments to the Jewish Federation’s Centennial Campaign and are over and above the donors’ annual gifts to the Jewish United Fund and to the individual day schools they may support. Middle class families with multiple children in day school feel the “financial squeeze” of day school tuition more than any other group. The Bernard Heerey Family Foundation Scholarship was established to meet the needs of these middle income families. Scholarships can finance as much as full tuition for families who meet these requirements.

This year THE HEEREY FOUNDATION HELPED 35 STUDENTS ATTEND THE ACADEMY. We gratefully acknowledge the Bernard Heerey Foundation for its generosity and commitment to day school education.

THE IDA CROWN ENDOWMENT FOUNDATION The Ida Crown Endowment Foundation was created in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago’s Day School Endowment Program and the Associated Talmud Torahs to ensure that ICJA and our sister day schools have the necessary resources to meet growing and evolving community needs. All endowment commitments are recognized as gifts to the Jewish Federation’s Centennial Campaign.

Celebration of Philanthropy Dr. Edward A. Crown Virtual Scholarship Dinner While we could not be together in person for the Annual Scholarship Dinner, the feeling of warmth and unity shined through into every home that night. It was a special evening paying tribute to Debbie and Dr. David Dobkin, Crown Leadership award; to the memory of Sammy Bernstein z”l by establishing the Sammy Bernstein z”l Music Program; and Shelley Stopek, Educator of the Year. It was also very exciting to learn more about 2 of our most popular programs, Ida Crown Girls Club and Student to Student as well as get a glimpse into the life of ICJA student Moshe Lodkin, who balances his school life with his dedication to playing violin.The room was full, there was so much excitement and inspiration in the air, and it was truly amazing to see all these familiar faces in one place!

The development team and lay leadership set out to achieve an unprecedented campaign goal this year. We are grateful, thanks to a dedicated group effort, to have surpassed that goal just prior to the annual campaign close on June 30th, despite the challenges of coronavirus.

IN TOTAL, THE ICJA FAMILY RAISED $1,337,527 MILLION FOR THE ICJA SCHOLARSHIP FUND-TOPPING $1 MILLION FOR THE FIFTH YEAR IN A ROW. Scholarship Funds assist more than 66% of our student body, ensuring the continuation of our founders’ mission that no Jewish child is denied a Jewish education. As we work tirelessly to prepare our students to thrive in the modern world both as Jews and as contributing members of society, we are so grateful to the many donors who enable us to accomplish this mission.

SOCIETY OF PATRONS Members of the Society of Patrons serve as the foundation of our fundraising efforts. Participation as an SOP enables ICJA to continue to provide direct scholarship assistance to families who cannot afford full tuition, fulfilling our mission that no Jewish child should be denied the opportunity to receive a Jewish education. This year’s Society of Patrons reception was at the beautiful and woodsy Evanston Ecology Center.

Our SOP members were treated to an elegant evening of wine and cheese tasting with sommelier Shulim Knobloch, and Brent Delman, the purveyor of the “Cheese Guy” cheeses.

Guests sampled the finest kosher wines and cheeses from across the world, pairing them with hors d’oeuvres, followed by a delicious dinner.

Celebration of Philanthropy GRANDPARENTS GIVING CIRCLE There is no doubt that the lessons grandparents teach their children and grandchildren form the foundation of these children’s Jewish identities. We pay tribute to our grandparents annually at our Grandparents Day. Not only was this year’s Grandparents Day unique because it was online, but we also opened it up to include parents as well for a multi-generational evening of entertainment. We were amazed by the mentalist show of Eran Biderman, a top mentalist performer. He regaled us with his sharp sense of humor and mind reading. His tricks were truly unbelievable and kept us on our toes. Thank you to the generations of families that participated and joined us that evening to create an unforgettable event.
