THIS IS CATALAN CINEMA

The Catalan Focus at Tallinn Black Nights comes at a very timely moment. Catalonia has established itself as one of the most vibrant audiovisual hubs in Southern Europe: a place where creativity, institutional support and international projection go hand in hand. Catalan cinema and culture have built a strong identity of their own, while at the same time becoming a trusted partner for global collaboration.

What defines this industry is a clear creative signature Catalan cinema has managed to combine strong artistic voices with a collaborative, cross-border way of working. Producers and talents often develop projects in dialogue with international partners, creating works that travel widely, connect with audiences, and show that cultural identity and market potential can reinforce each other.

This vitality is also sustained by a solid public framework. The Government of Catalonia through the ICEC – Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies and Institut Ramon Llull work together to support the whole audiovisual value chain, from training and development, to financing, production, international promotion and exhibition. Specific tools such as dedicated co-production funds and schemes for high-end TV series make Catalonia not just a fertile ground for ideas, but also an attractive partner for co-production, distribution and creative exchange.

Tallinn is the right place to highlight this moment. Its festival and market open doors to Northern and Eastern Europe, providing new opportunities for Catalan companies to build alliances with producers, sales agents and distributors. It is also the perfect setting to show Catalonia’s strengths as a competitive ecosystem: outward-looking, innovative, and committed to long-term partnerships.

The Catalan Focus at Tallinn Black Nights is therefore more than a showcase, it is a statement. It underlines the capacity of Catalonia’s audiovisual culture to generate distinctive works while engaging actively with the international industry. It invites new partners to join a thriving hub where creativity, strategy, and collaboration converge, positioning Catalonia as a strategic ally for coproduction, distribution, and creative exchange in today’s global market. Catalan cinema today stands in dialogue with the global world and its challenges, offering stories that connect local perspectives with universal concerns. The festival’s curated selection perfectly captures this remarkable moment for Catalan cinema, showcasing the diversity and vitality of a creative ecosystem that bridges art, industry and identity.

An actress revisiting her career (Marisa Paredes), a disoriented anthropologist (Naomi Kawase), and two legendary divas (Arielle Dombasle / Myriam Mézières) travel with other strangers in a mysterious vehicle from which they cannot easily get off. Along the way, they fable about their identities while Desire, Eros, incarnates to seduce them all. A liminal journey between life and death, in which the phenomenological is never a closed reality. A road movie in the mood of Cortázar, the Tibetan Bardo, and Jules Cotard. The film blends visual art, literature, and music, drawing inspiration from expressionism, symbolism, and Latin American magical realism. It weaves together diverse traditions, echoing the cinema of the 1970s in its forms and atmospheres.
