EDITORS LETTER Dear Readers, Time passes quickly at IBP. Although it feels like the semester has just begun, most of us are already busy preparing for the exams in December. Actually, most of us are quite busy in general. Probably because we want to get the very most out of our time and because our surroundings allow us to engage in a lot of cool things. Being a student is all about growing academically, professionally and - most importantly - personally. We are privileged with IBP’s framework for personal development which is quite unique, and we should appreciate the opportunities that our study program provides us and cherish the people that surrounds us – that’s all of you guys.

“Being a student is all about growing academically, professionally and most importantly - personally” Being in an environment that’s conducive to personal growth is definitely a good thing, and if you stay curious it is extremely rewarding.

Talk to people you don’t know, approach alternative ideas with an open mind, explore new territory and always intend to share, contribute and inspire. But do so while staying critical toward what you encounter and staying faithful toward yourself. Reflect, ask questions and be honest to yourself. What do I want to gain from reading this text? Is this event actually worth my time? And what is my genuine motivation for applying for this student position?

Those are some of the considerations that should drive our personal development as students.

IBP has so much to offer. To get the most out of it, you must stay curious and critical.

IbP of the issue Explain the history behind the CBS Climate Club We were three people who went to the student society day last year and wanted to sign up for a climate specific club, but we couldn’t find anything like that at that time. That was when the idea started. In the beginning there was no real incentive, other than that it was simply in our interest.

We went to one of the climate marches and heard a group from Copenhagen University. They inspired us and we believed that it is important for CBS to have a climate club as well. The business world and the Copenhagen Business School are closely linked and many students will later have important jobs in business. With that in mind, I think it is significant to show that we as business students care about issues like sustainability and climate change.

What is the CBS Climate Club working on?

We have so many things that we want to do. Sometimes I think that we have too many ideas and it is hard to actually implement them all. We will organize one large event per semester and other than that we want to have smaller workshops and training classes. We talked about doing a carbon literacy training class, where we don’t expect 150 people to come but more around 30 people, who are interested and engaged in this topic.

Sara is a second year Bsc. IBP student from Denmark.

She is one of the founding members as well as the current president of the CBS Climate Club. Apart from this, Sara has a student job at Axcelfuture and is also on the advisory board of Cult, a Danish beverage company.

The goal of CBS Climate Club is to engage students in integrating environmental sustainability as a part of both their personal and professional lives, in order to address the challenges of climate change.

Apart from your engagement in the CBS Climate Club you have a student job at Axcelfuture. Can you tell us more about that? Axcel is a private equity firm and Axcelfuture is kind of a Think Tank. It is mainly about the future investment environment. We do a lot of reports about what is happening in the investment environment.

Is there a general interest that ties together all the things you do? It is a lot of different things. I have always been interested in politics and the environmental change that needs to happen. The political system is not that simple, which is why I think that the private sector also has a responsibility. An interest of mine is how the private sector can make a difference. So it is really that link between politics, business and sustainability that interest me. “I had to take quite a few turns to realize what is purposeful for me” When you were young, what did you think you’d doing at this age?

I never really thought about what I would expect me to be doing. When I was five or six years old I wanted to become a dog walker. I did not expect me to be where I am right now. Before I started IBP, I studied fashion management and design in New York. I thought that this was the environment I should be in, which is of course totally different to where I am right now. I am happy with where I am right now, but I had to take quite few turns to realize what was purposeful and what the most important thing was for me. Sometimes you have to try out things to see what is really right for you.

How do you manage all your activities? Do you have any advice regarding time management?

Good question, I sometimes feel like I need some advice myself. To be honest, I did not really have time for starting a society and actually being a part of it. But if something is important enough for you, then you make the time.

Regarding the Climate Club, I thought it was something that needed to be done and somebody needed to do it.

I really wanted to be a part of that. In general, managing time is all about planning and I use my calendar a lot. Sometimes it can be a bit annoying that you cannot be as spontaneous as you want to be. Some weeks are crazy, some weeks are fine.

I would really like to study a master program in sustainable economics or environmental politics. In terms of jobs I do not really know yet. I just know that I want to work in the field of business, politics and sustainability.

Why did you choose to begin with IBP in the first place? When I studied fashion I just realized that there is a difference between an interest of yours and what you actually want to do for a living. I realized that Fashion itself was not what I was looking for. I have been interested in politics since high school and wanted to learn more about how politics and business therefore interfere. That is why I ended up applying for IBP in the end.

After a lovely little hiatus over summer, we are back and better than ever! The highlight so far has got to be the VERY successful Student Society Day filled with the coolest merch and interesting conversations! Besides that, September has brought the expansion of our little family and we are so excited for all the new members of the IBP Union and the three committees! Tons of bright students ready to plan the most amazing events for the most amazing study programme. We, the Board, have been focusing on boosting engagement, diversifying events, and growing our social media presence. Morten Lund Jensen, Head of IBP ACADEMIC In IBP Academic we have recently welcomed 13 new freshies to our member group, held our first stock exchange event with Jyske Bank and visited the consultancy Struensee & Co. Soon we will be begin planning all of our events for the coming year, which includes more stock exchange events, company visits, the Linking Minds Case Competition and our study trip. Carl Rørbye, Head of IBP SOCIAL IBP Social has had the honor of welcoming 15 bright and passionate new members to the committee. With the new Friday bar team, the first Friday bar of the year turned out to be very successful (all beers sold out!) and we were very happy with the great attendance among first years. After our first meeting, we have set out a great plan for the remainder of the semester and established working groups for the different upcoming events including fall dinner, Christmas dinner, FIFA tournament and so on. “please spare me the annual embarassement of looking at the ibp turnout figures”

Dear IPB, As the nights draw in we are not only approaching Halloween and beyond that the prospect of Christmas (with - as I write this - the possibility of Brexit coming along at some point as well .. but then maybe not) but also the annual ritual of Study Board elections.

There are moans in every annual evaluation (yup .. those things that 16% of you kindly completed) about the lack of communication from the IBP Study Board.

My reply is always the same. You have elected student representatives and you should establish a line of communication with them . . and they should establish a line of communication with you. I, along with other staff representatives on the IBP Study Board, am answerable to a staff electorate. The only difference is that we serve four year terms and you disappear rather more quickly.

The problem however goes beyond communication or indeed the lack of it. Turnout in Study Board elections is, for a programme rooted in politics as well as business and economics, bloody awful. And I am not entirely sure of the reasons. It is, after all, difficult to be unaware of the elections when enlarged mugshots of the candidates greet you every time you enter a CBS building. And you can’t buy lunch without a reminder popping up at the register.

So why? If we employ the standard approaches and frameworks in political science (remember?) it could be ‘hapathy’ whereby your unalloyed happiness with everything at CBS leads to indifference about governance but somehow I doubt it. Or the answer may lie in the character of the labour market. Student jobs and other commitments take your focus of attention away from IBP and CBS. Or maybe we should, like Tony Blair and Bill Clinton two decades ago, turn to the wisdom of Robert Putnam and see low electoral turnout as a function of broader civic disengagement. Or is something happening at candidate selection level (well, in this case, they select themselves)? Are they too alike or too unrepresentative of the electorate?

In sum, I haven’t got a clue but there’s a potentially interesting Bachelor project there. I could construct a few reasonably concise and precise lines of argument if that’s any help.

This is, as you will be realizing by now, a thinly-veiled attempt to encourage candidates and votes in the coming contest. IBP needs your ideas and experience.

Apart from everything else, please spare me the annual embarrassment of looking at the IBP turnout figures compared with those of more or less every other programme.

Whether you are running or voting, you now have the chance to choose your preferred representation of the students in IBP and CBS. In IBP, we elect 5 students for the study board, who will represent our student body in any IBP related matter - and representation matters.

On the study board we solve, discuss and decide any issues from scheduling hazards to exam forms, to the future of the IBP profile such as: - Should we have more assessments throughout the course, and if so, should they be mandatory or voluntary?

- Can we make changes to increase participation rates in the lecture halls?

- Can we meet the high demand for feedback using the unused office hours?

- How do we ensure an IBP profile accommodating the ever-changing labour market?

- Which skills do we want future IBP graduates to be in possession of?

The elections will run in week 47 powered by CBSstudents, who will provide all the information needed in the coming few weeks. Additionally, feel free to contact me or one of the other current study board members with any questions - election or IBP related.

Internationals eyes on denmark Moving to Denmark is not as straightforward as one might think. Regardless of if you are a complete newcomer, or if you have visited the land of the danes before - there are plenty of culture clashes to experience. We have the ironic humour, the (half swallowed) langauge and the franatic biking, just to give a few examples. And not to forget the heavy beer consumprtion, always paired with highly sophisticated games. Lets hear about how some of our fellow IBP see Denmark from their international perspectives.

Why did you choose CBS and Denmark as your study place?

I knew I wanted to study in English and also not in Italy, and the rankings for CBS and IBP are really good. I had heard really good things about Copenhagen as a city and also that the Danish people are very driven and productive compared to, for instance, Italians.

What were your thoughts about and expectations for Danes and Danish culture before coming to CBS and Copenhagen?

I had an idea of Danes being hard to approach and not being very open towards new people, but that was completely wrong. People here are very approachable. From media I had quite high expectations on Denmark which proved to be correct. I had been warned that the weather would be really bad, and, unfortunately, I have to say that also that was correct.

What is your favourite thing about Denmark?

I really like the people in IBP and also that the programme is so social.

Everyone still hang out all the time, even though intro was long ago. I also love biking around here and that everything is close by even if it is a large city. What I like the least is definitely the weather and the prices here.

Alva Schelin What were your thoughts and expectations on Danes and Danish culture before coming to CBS and Copenhagen?

I have to say that I actually was expecting less of a culture chock, being Swedish and Scandinavian. The Danish approach to life is different to the Swedish, for instance Danes are much more outspoken and have harsher jokes compared to Swedes.

The stereotype that Swedes are very politically correct becomes quite evident here.

What is the biggest difference between your home country and Denmark?

Being very similar in most aspects, I feel like the biggest difference between Sweden and Denmark is the people. Danes are much more upfront, which is something I really appreciate.

People in Stockholm are much more laid back and do not talk to strangers unless they have to, while Danes actually are interested and curious in talking to people they don't know.

What is your favourite thing about Denmark?

Not to sound like a complete alcoholic, but probably the drinking culture with the access to alcohol and the bar culture, with drinking at all hours and in a more "casual" way compared to Sweden.

Why did you choose CBS and Denmark for your studies?

I felt like I needed a break from the US, and my parents have worked at CBS, so my mom really recommended the school. Besides, everyone who knows about CBS in the US only talks about IBP, it's a fantastic programme.

What has been the weirdest thing so far in Denmark?

Oh, I would definitely say everything related to Cabin Trip, the bus ride and everything that happened during the trip.

Another thing is that literally everyone in Denmark is so hot, both guys and girls, it's insane.

I just love how friendly and open everyone are towards each other. In the US, people are much more competitive and sometimes a bit scheming. Everyone here are truly warm and genuine people. Also, Natalia.

meet the freemovers who went to vietnam Where are you on exchange? We are doing our exchange semester in the vibrant Ho Chi Minh City, known and preferred as Saigon by the Southern Vietnamese population. From October 14th and onwards, we will study at the Australian University Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) at their Saigon South Campus. RMIT offers great electives within business, economics and management for both bachelor- and master students.

After we decided to share our fifth semester together, we talked about our expectations and what we wanted to achieve and take away from a semester abroad. First, the country would have to reflect an interesting profile in regard to culture, economic state, political system and its nature.

Secondly, the destination had to facilitate travel opportunities why Vietnam’s central location in South-East Asia is perfect.

Furthermore, Vietnam is experiencing a rapid societal development, and we both thought it would be cool to experience this first-hand. Lastly, we did not want to compromise with the academic level, hence the constellation of an Australian university in an emerging country seemed perfect.

Why did you choose to be a freemover instead of going on exchange through CBS? And can you perhaps shortly explain what it means to be a freemover? Being a Freemover entails that you arrange your fifth semester at a foreign university yourself with great support from a Freemover-organization. We are doing our semester through one called EDU, who has offered great assistance completely free of charge. The simple difference between exchange and study abroad is that you do not switch place with a student from another university that CBS has an exchange agreement with.

Why freemovers? We chose to be Freemovers, first and foremost, because of the unique opportunity of going abroad together. The exchange system at CBS makes this rather difficult, as grades, at least for our year, were solely dominant. After beginning our application process, we quickly learned that by applying directly to our university abroad, we gained a time advantage.

This was in terms of getting our courses pre-approved by the IBP study board, applying for scholarships and getting our flight tickets at a reasonable price compared to our fellow students who did exchange through CBS.

How do you pay for your time on the exchange?

As a Freemover you have to pay tuition fee to the foreign university. This fee differs substantially depending on where you wish to go. For our semester, we paid US$ 6.000,00 (around 40.000,00 DKK).

However (only relevant for Danish students), you receive the Udlandsstipendium from the Danish government which helps pay for your tuition fee.

The stipendium is calculated based on what you study and how many electives you will take. As business students you receive the lowest rate, which for us, when taking four electives, amounted to 21.550,00 DKK. It is basically the money CBS would have received if you had been enrolled there during your fifth semester.

Furthermore, we have both received scholarships.

EDU provides you with a complete list of scholarships, which previous students have received along with examples of budgets and motivational applications for the scholarships. This makes the process of applying for scholarships a whole lot easier. In addition to these, the SU gets you far in a developing country where prices are substantially low, however, savings from e.g. student-jobs is an important factor as well.

Here, you can ride your motorbike in the Ha Giang Loop exploring the mesmerizing nature, local tribes and the Ba Be National Park. Furthermore, although a bit unexplored, the Con Dao Islands in the south is another must-visit during our time in Vietnam. These used to be a French prison for Vietnamese involved in the independence movement. Now, it is on the rise to becoming a new star in Vietnam’s many attractions.

Lastly you have to explore the Vietnamese street kitchen. Ordering a Banh Mi on the street for 5 DKK or slurping a Phó at the market will both satisfy your bank account and your tummy. If you have not yet watched With the semester starting quite late, we were able the Netflix documentary series ‘Street Food’, put it on to travel in South-East Asia a month before arriving in your to-do-list.

Vietnam. Despite the write you a recommendation as these are needed for many must-sees in Vietnam such as Hoi An and some scholarships.

Halong Bay, we have narrowed down the Northern part of the country as being another must-do.

What are your first impressions being on exchange? As we have not started school yet (today’s date: 09-10-2019), this is a tough question to answer. So far, the RMIT Saigon South campus looks amazing. It has a variety of sport facilities such as tennis-courts, basketball, volleyball, badminton and a gym with free personal trainer (whaaat?!). We will only have classes on Mondays and Tuesdays, which means we will have plenty of time to travel as well. Saigon is an incredible city. It is so vibrant and the opportunities to explore new areas seem infinite.

Maria Hatzisavva Damsgaard is a 3rd year IBP bachelor student, who is undertaking an internship position in the Political- and Economic Section at the U.S. Embassy to Denmark in the fall semester 2019. Read about the benefits of an internship and get inspired!

Working at the us embassy

What were your reflections on your choice of internship? After many years of studying, I felt an urge to completely submerge myself in an organization. When I started looking for internships, I therefore only looked for full-time positions. I have always found the intricate nature of modern U.S. politics and foreign policy-making to be very fascinating, and I knew early on that I wanted to intern in an organization that, broadly speaking, dealt with international relations. I sent out a few applications to different organizations, and the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen was the first to reach out. It was very important for me that the organization I would intern for, was one that valued and professionally challenged their interns. I was invited for a very nice interview, where I got the feeling that all of my before mentioned criteria were an integral part of interning the Embassy.

When I was offered the position, I had no doubts about doing a full-time internship at the U.S. Embassy

What are the requirements when choosing an internship on the 5th semester? Before you apply for an internship, you need to identify how the IBP competency profile relates to both your host organization and the internship position itself. Working at your favorite NGO is not enough, if all you will be doing is making Power Points and coffee – but you already knew that. Next, you will need to choose whether you would like to do a 7.5 or 15 ECTS internship, supplemented with electives on the side, or a full-time 30 ECTS internship, which is the total ECTS requirement for the semester. Depending on the amount of ECTS you would like to do, there are different requirements for the internship paper, both regarding the content and the length of the paper. I would recommend looking at the course information of each of the three courses. Lastly, you need to write a love letter, and forward it your favorite supervisor of choice. How does a normal day at the U.S. Embassy look like?

There is no such thing as a normal day at the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen. Sure, certain tasks are recurrent, like translation work or attending meetings, but you will undoubtedly be met with new tasks every day. You also get to attend many exciting conferences and other events, which is a great chance to meet interesting people, and to get insight in topics you might not have been exposed to as a full-time student.

What has been the highlight of your internship? The highlight of my internship has been to gain understanding of what American diplomacy entails. The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen has a highly professional work environment and being a daily part of that milieu, encouraged me to work hard and to do my best in a way I haven’t experienced before. Fully submerging yourself into an organization lets you identify a lot about the organization itself, but also about yourself, and how your competencies fit into that environment. A positive byproduct of that, is that my internship experience has led me closer towards deciding on what I want to do after I receive my bachelor’s degree this summer.

What has been the biggest personal challenge during your internship? I wouldn’t say that I have had any big personal challenges during my internship. With that said, I quickly learned that I had to prioritize very differently in my weekly schedule as a full-time intern. But I have enjoyed the entire process, and fully embraced the 8-17 working days.

What is your best piece of advice for IBP’s considering doing an internship? I have two best pieces of advice, and the first is a practical one: Don’t be afraid to reach out to an organization or a company that you want to intern for, even though they don’t have any internship positions available at that moment. We are very lucky in Denmark that company structures generally are very flat, which means it’s easy to get in contact with management. I really encourage everyone to utilize that fact. The second piece of advice is to not be afraid to do something different than your peers. When I chose not to go abroad, it felt like there was a certain IBP-stigma attached to that decision. But for me, it made more sense to pursue an internship during my bachelor program rather than during my master’s degree. There really is no one way to work through the IBP bachelor program.

Would you recommend other IBP’s to take an internship? I would very much recommend any IBP student to do an internship. But I also think we need to realize, that choosing an internship isn’t the antithesis of going abroad to study, and one isn’t better than the other. I especially think that interning can be valuable, when you get to be a part of an organization that otherwise doesn’t have student assistants, much like the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen. That makes your internship a very unique opportunity to experience an organization that you otherwise wouldn’t have been able to gain access to.

NIkodems guide to Slovakia Being so international as we are, both in terms of traveling all around the world and coming from every corner of the world, we thought why not take advantage of that? Even though TripAdvisor can be quite helpful we all know that local tips are the ones that really count - because where do you find the truly best place to have Slovakian Halušky?

Your favorite Slovakian Tradition?

No doubt, it’s Easter Monday. Tradition says that we must throw our women into the Danube river.

However, today it is not so extreme, so we usually just throw buckets of water at them or spray them with a perfume meanwhile singing a good-wish song.

This is believed to help women stay healthy by “washing away” the bad spirits and is also a very great opportunity to splash water onto siblings and your mother. I would claim the Ice Bucket challenge to be Slovakian heritage.

Where to stay The Old Town which is the city center. It’s just full of life and you can find really good places here.

Best restaurant for a true Slovakian meal Halušky is the dish you have to try! It is dumplings with a special cheese (sounds delicious!!) and the best place to get it is at Meštiansky Pivovar.

Best museum The National Gallery is really good, however there are lots of small galleries all around and I would recommend going to Slávica which is both a gallery and design store. Generally, Bratislava has a lot of design events I really enjoy “White Night” and Design Week during June.

TripAdvisor recommendation worth going to The Castle located in the old town is really worth going to. Slovakia has the most castles per capita in Europe so if you’re really into beautiful old buildings, I would consider also outside of Bratislava to see Bojnický Zámok.

Best place to study and get coffee Sväg To Go or MAD DROP (here they only play hardcore rock music which obviously helps get you into the studying spirit).

Best club or bar Bukowski Bar has very interesting drinks and is located in an old and cool building in the city center. If you’re up for dancing and great concerts and cultural events you should go to KC Dunaj Favorite Sunday activity I enjoy going to a nice park, my favorites are Medická Záhrada or Sad Janka Kráľa. During the winter, I prefer meeting up with my friends for a beer in the city center.

One thing to be aware of before going?

You cannot drink in the streets and I would say use a taxi app instead of hailing a taxa - they will rip you off.

AND skip all the “turisty” places.

LIFE AFTER IBP

MEET Mads Tvilling Kjærgaard Associate Consultant, Struensee & Co.

Can you take us through your academic and professional career? I started my IBP studies in 2013 and I had three wonderful years at IBP. I still have some of my best friends from IBP and I still identify as an IBP, but when those three years had come to an end I thought that it might be a good idea for me to try something else than writing essays on monetary policy in Argentina and stuff like that, so I switched to Finance and Strategic Management also at CBS for my Master’s. I also had an exchange visit at University of British Columbia in wonderful Vancouver.

Now I’m an Associate Consultant at Struensee & Co. Why did you choose IBP in the first place?

I think choosing IBP was very much a way to procrastinate my decision on whether I liked business or politics more. I’ve always been very engaged in society and I’ve wanted to change things. I was politically active, but I was also thrilled by the workings of the financial sector and how huge money flows can actually affect society more than political decisions. So, I was split and I didn’t know what to do. But then I encountered IBP and I thought ‘well, here’s a program at CBS that is called business AND politics and is also well renowned. How can that be any better?’

What is the most valuable competence that you acquired during your years at IBP? I think to me the most valuable thing I learned at IBP is that there’s something special about being an IBP. We are kind of alike and we are ambitious, not only on behalf of ourselves, but also ambitious for the world as a whole. I think that mix between not being naïve and idealistic, but not being a cynic either, of being both ambitious on behalf of yourself and on behalf of society is really great.

That’s like the overarching culture, but more concretely, I think IBP teaches you some very useful skills. We are neither experts in economics and business nor in politics.

We don’t know about the inner workings of the Danish public sector and we don’t know how to build advanced excel models, but we understand quantitative method and we understand qualitative method and that means that we’re really good at building bridges. I think in the future we will need even more generalists who are able to speak multiple professional languages and I think that IBP is a really, really good starting point to become a great generalist. In addition to acquiring quantitative and qualitative skills, you also acquire social skills, presentation skills and you get an international outlook.

What are your tasks in your current job as an Associate Consultant at Struensee & Co.?

The thing about consulting is that it’s really difficult to talk about tasks because your tasks will vary from project to project. But something that’s always a task is approaching problems in a structured way. We’re usually faced with big problems in the public sector. That could be finding millions of DKK that can be relocated to other purposes or formulating strategies for some of the major actors in the public sector.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your current job at Struensee & Co.? I think my answer is two-fold. The first thing is that I’ve been allowed to work on a lot of stuff that I really find rewarding.

Specifically, on the sustainability agenda that I’ve been working a lot with during the past year. I’ve been working a lot with the EU directives on plastic and recyclability and how we should implement them in Denmark. That’s something that really has a major impact on both public and private institutions, so I think that’s really rewarding to work with.

We always have a problem-solving session in the beginning of a project and try to break the problem down into minor problems. Next step is to communicate some very complex issues to top management. And top management is not always interested in all the facets and details, they need to know the essence of the problem and the essence of the solution. So, what we’re really learning at Struensee & Co. is top-down communication.

Lastly, we do a lot of stakeholder management. Consulting in the public sector is very political, which means that we’re not only accountable for revenue targets or sales targets as you might be in a private company. We also have to consider political interests and - at least for me the stakeholder environment is often way more complex.

You need to be able to handle various stakeholders, such as the CEO of the institution you’re dealing with, the Head of Division of a Ministry, the Head of Section of another Ministry, industry interests and political interests.

On the other side – and this is probably a general thing for consulting - people are quite young which is of course a derivate of the workload. It takes a lot, but that also means that we’re all in the same place. We are young people, we really want to make a difference, we’re ambitious, we want to work hard for the company and for our clients. That means that even though you work long hours, you don’t do it alone. You do it sitting next to people that I don’t hesitate to call my friends. We are really just one big team, and actually I’d say that the most satisfying thing for me is that I actually get to work with my friends. As a matter of fact, later this afternoon I’ll fly to London to watch a football game with six of my friends from Struensee & Co.

Do you work long hours? Yes, we do work long hours.

A lot of people are trying to say something else about consulting, but it’s a lie to say that we don’t work a lot.

I mean, people in consulting are ambitious and they also require a lot in terms of their personal development. People want to get quick promotions; they want to be able to assume responsibility really quickly and that requires something from your employer. They need to put up an infrastructure that allows you to grow and gives you a lot of responsibility. But it does also require something from you. And one thing that it does require from you is long hours. I would say that working hours at Struensee are about 55-60 hours a week.

Travel (sustainably of course), see the world, get some incredible experiences. Thirdly, read more books. I don’t mean textbooks, but read something that’s of interest to you and that is outside your studies. That will give you a broader world view that you will be able to use not only in school, but also in conversation with people you meet along the way.

You might be interested in something and meet someone who knows something about it and that can lead to some super cool stuff. So, I would say read more even though it’s a tough one and Netflix on the couch might seem more appealing. Fourthly, - and I wish I had done this more – engage in the really good student societies that you have at CBS.

What are your plans for your future career?

I think a lot of young students ask about how they should design their career and think about career planning. One thing I always say to them is ‘go with your gut feeling’, because eventually your gut feeling will lead you to what you’re best at and enjoy the most. For myself, I would love to work in Vsncouver one day in a not too distant future. In three years maybe. I was on exchange there and to me it’s the most gorgeous, wonderful city in the world, but I don’t know what I will do there. Maybe I will stay in consulting, maybe I will go into sustainable investments or maybe I will work for a Danish company that has an office in Vancouver. I don’t know. I will do whatever feels right.

In retrospect, is there anything that you should have done differently as a student?

Definitely. Many things. I have a list of advice that I would have liked to give to my younger self. I think most importantly, I’d say go with your gut when you choose your Master’s, that’s very important. I myself chose the Master that I thought sounded the coolest and had a good reputation. That’s not a good idea.

Secondly, - and I think this is very relevant for CBS students – don’t rush it. I did it all in five years and I wish I’d taken six or seven. You’ll have plenty of time working full time and even though it is awesome to work full time, the flexibility and freedom you have as a student is unique and you won’t get it like that again.

As we both are hoping for a career in IOs and NGOs, IBP seemed like a really good master because of the international outlook and the combination of politics and economy, which would give us tools to understand both areas.

What is the biggest difference between the master and bachelor?

The amount of readings is more significant than the bachelor, and there is an implicit expectation that all are read and understood before class. This means that we rarely go into depth the theories in lectures, but instead work on applying the directly.

This also means that the classes are more case-based. While it means much more group work in class, it also makes it less abstract than on the bachelor. But many of the theories we’ve studied so far on the master builds on the ones we learned on the bachelor, which makes it easier to understand them.

“classes are more case-based” Why did you choose the IBP master?

As on the bachelor, the IBP master combines the elements of economics and politics, which is something we both really liked from the bachelor. This also gives a broader range when looking at career opportunities, if you don’t yet know what you want to do, this is really nice. What really attracted us was the stream course structure in the second semester. This makes it possible to make the master a bit more focused on your interests.

Another difference is that the courses interlink from the beginning. It both makes it harder to separate the different theories and readings, but it’s really nice that you can apply things from one class in another.

Lastly, because both HA.soc and IBP have a legal claim to the master, there is an even mix of the two programmes. This makes the discussions in class more interesting, as we have different backgrounds.

What do you think of the new course schedule of the master programme, and what are your thoughts of choosing one of the four directions?

On the master, we have semester structure, which we had not tried before on the bachelor. This means that per week we spend less time at CBS (compared to the first and third quarter on the bachelor). On this semester, we have very intensive days at the beginning of the week and then the last part of the week, we have time for work and preparation for the lectures. Especially, due to the amount of readings, preparation takes longer compared to on the bachelor.

In the first semester, we have four courses that give a good introduction to the four streams. It is then possible to get a feeling of which stream that might suit you best.

What skill do you find most valuable (academic or personal) attained from the IBP programme?

The bachelor has given us both academic skills and developed us personally, which is useful for the master. The personal development can especially be seen from the fifth semester when we both went abroad - exchange in Ireland and internship in Australia.

The internship in Australia was a good introduction to learning how to work in a foreign country. Just to learn the business culture was not as easy as it may seem. There are many informal rules, which are not being spelt out since they are taken for granted.

Therefore, it may take some time learning to navigate in this.

Besides learning a different business culture, it also takes time to learn how to live in a different country and build a social network. There is a big difference between living in a city due to a job and travelling around as a tourist. Therefore, it gives a different experience than travelling around in a gap year.

The exchange in Ireland was a fantastic way of meeting people from all around Europe (and the US), which really broadens your horizon. Especially living with other international students teaches you to appreciate the cultural differences and how much it may change just within Europe. But it also gives you friends for life and a place to stay when you travel. Exchange is also a good way to experience other styles of teaching. For example, while we at IBP have a lot of lectures in very large classes, at the University of Limerick, they taught in smaller classes where participation was mandatory, which pushes you to speak up and apply the knowledge differently.

The academic skill that we especially have gotten from the bachelor is how to study. On the master, we already know how to read an academic text and know how to work depending on the different types of courses. These skills are something that can easily be taken for granted, but we remember that this could be very time-consuming at the beginning of the bachelor. As mentioned, the theoretical background from the bachelor is very useful on the master and there is a good interlink between the bachelor and master. This is one of the benefits of choosing the same direction as the bachelor since it builds on previous courses.

Karstins Browned butter caramel cake

This cake is perfect for the autumn! The browning of the butter is a little tedious and not crucial for the cake, but it truly adds depth and lots more caramel notes to the flavour. If you skip this part, simply use 100 grams of normal salted butter for the batter. The cake can both be made in a large sheet pan for ease of making and transporting (approx.

24x30 cm) – or baked in a springform pan and frosted like a traditional layer cake for that special occasion.

For the cake 150 g of salted butter for browning or 100 g of salted butter if not browned 3 eggs, room temp 200 g of sugar 180 g of flour 1 tsp of baking powder ½ vanilla pod or 1 tsp of vanilla sugar 1 pinch of fine salt 1 dl of milk (pref. full fat)

The Brown Butter Melt the butter in a (larger than you think you need) pot over medium high heat. Stir occasionally with a whisk, making sure to scrape the bottom of the pot and make sure not to leave the pot alone. The butter will boil, sizzle up and start changing colour. It takes a while, but be patient; as with sugar, you need to be brave and take it a little further than you think.

For the creme caramel 2 tsp of flour 2 tbsp of brown sugar 1½ dl of light golden syrup 2½ dl of heavy cream 100 grams of salted butter 1 pinch of fine salt

When the butter is ready, all the water has evaporated, and the scent of nutty caramel should fill the room. If you are lucky enough to be in possession of a sugar or pin thermometer, it should read approx.

150-165 degrees Celsius. Working with these high temperatures, of course it is vital to stay calm and avoid burning (165 degrees fat on the skin is not pleasant!)

Remove the pan from the stove and pour the browned butter through a sieve covered with kitchen paper to remove the (burnt) milk solids.

Don’t feel unsuccessful if the butter looks too dark (close to burnt), it truly only adds to the flavour. Set aside at room temperature while proceeding with the recipe.

The batter If you skip the browned butter, simply melt 100 grams of salted butter over low heat and set aside.

Preheat the oven at 185 degrees Celsius. Whisk the eggs with the sugar and vanilla at high speed. If you’re indulging yourself and your guests with a vanilla pod, scrape the seeds out and use a knife to disperse the heavenly scented seeds with some of the sugar and add to the eggs and remaining sugar. The mixture should be very light in colour and texture, and it might take up to five minutes. Whisk the browned butter into the egg mixture (make sure it is not scorching hot, avoiding curdling of the eggs).

Mix the flour with the baking powder and the salt and fold (or sieve) this into the batter along with the milk. If “folding” with a handheld whisk or mixer, avoid overmixing. Pour into a 24x30 cm sheet pan or 20-22 cm springform pan. Place the cake on a rack in the middle of the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 min, or until a skewer or knife inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool to room temperature or covered overnight.

The crème caramel In a medium sized pot mix the flour with brown sugar to disperse and avoid lumps later on. Add in the rest of the ingredients and mix well, again avoiding lumps. Bring to the boil on the stove and cook for approx. 6-8 min. To make sure the crème caramel will set up properly, put a small amount of the crème caramel on a cool surface (e.g. a refrigerator cold teaspoon) and wait for approx. 5 minutes to see, how it sets. If it is still runny, simply continue cooking for a few more minutes to evaporate some more of the liquid. When the desired texture is achieved, let the crème caramel set for a few hours or overnight at room temperature, or in the fridge until it has set up and is pliable. If placed in the fridge, allow the crème caramel to come back to room temperature before frosting the cake.

Decoration For sheet pan: simply frost the cake with the crème caramel and enjoy.

For springform pan: either slice the cake into two layers and add some of the frosting in the middle before proceeding, or simply slather on the crème caramel on the top and sides of the cake.

Decorate however you fancy; in the picture the cake is decorated with flowers from red oxalis and dried “bark” of parsnip.
