Professor's Page Programme director of IBP Welcome to IBP! It’s a great pleasure to write to you as the Programme Director for the BSc. and MSc. IBP degrees. I’ve been involved in IBP from the start, mainly teaching International Political Economy, a field of study you will come to know well in the coming years. The BSc. IBP degree is a combination of economics and finance, business & management studies, and political science and political economy. The aim of the degree is to enable you to see both the micro- and macro-elements of social and economic systems. You will be able to assess how firms develop strategies and the logics of managerial behaviour, as well as fostering analytical skills to understand and explain geopolitical and socio-economic trends. You will also know how to interpret financial statements and accounts and learn various ways of looking at data relevant to the social sciences through qualitative and quantitative methodologies. All of this will be related to the Nordic Nine values being embraced at CBS, which focus on Knowledge, Values, and Action, including your ability to analyse, to use critical thinking, and foster global connections. While this is a lot to take in, you have some considerably powerful help. The faculty, the administrators, and your fellow students will help you through the process.

Now we are in the post-pandemic period—at least in policy—the faculty and students are back to ‘normal’ with face-to-face teaching and engagement. We place a very high price on this interaction. The pandemic taught us that the best learning environments are ones where there is a lot of free exchange of ideas and confidence to ask questions. We also know that your wellbeing is a priority and we’ve been adjusting how we teach to allow better pacing in the structure.

You are now university students, IBP students at that, and that means that we are looking for debate, placing focus not on learning scripted ‘right’ answers, but how to develop the critical and analytical skills that employers are looking for. To develop these skills you need concepts, theories and methodologies, which allow you to apply strategies and tactics for finding new information across a range of cases. You will be learning a lot of those.

On practical matters, please be aware that you have a compulsory Academic Integrity Test to complete.

You’ll hear more about this in the coming weeks and it’s nothing to worry about, but something to attend to.

Also, on practical matters you should know that you have a say in what happens in IBP. The IBP Study Board is very active. Our work is organized by our excellent Programme Manager, Helle Bunde and me, and executed by the entire board, which includes a student Vice Chair and our IBP student representatives.

Once you know who your student representatives are don’t be shy in letting them know what you think.

Be prepared to have the best time, as we ourselves still consider our own introweek one of the best memories at IBP so far. Once the exhilaration of intro is over, uni life might hit you harder than you expected. Questions about balancing social and academic life, navigating through all the reading and motivation will most likely come up.

This is where we, your mentors, are here to help you! We are hired by CBS to support you during your first year. Together, we will have group meetings for study-hack sharing, group work, exams, planning - it will be a space where we can talk about anything you want and support each other. Besides that, we will be available for one-on-one talks so don’t hesitate reaching out to us! We are looking so much forward to getting to know you, but for now, enjoy intro!

Are you ready for take-off? Because this intro week is going to be a wild ride around Copenhagen and CBS! First year at uni comes with some turbulence, but we are your designated wing-men and will help you might need - and we cannot wait to get to know you. Put on your aviator sunglasses, your leather jackets and biggest smile because we will take the other intro group’s breath away!

What was your biggest surprise moving to Copenhagen?

For sure the horizontal, one-sided toasters! Also, the little Danish flags on the buses, that are only used on holidays or royal birthdays, I think? And not to mention how Danes drink beer like it was water.

What is your biggest struggle during summer? it has to be my sunburns after just 30 min in the sun and the mosquito bites the size of my fist. Also, the SAS strike came with some challenges, but other than that summer is pretty struggle-free which is why we all love it I guess.

Best book you ever read?

Maybe it is because I read this book this summer and it is fresh in my mind, or it is actually my favorite, but I highly recommend A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. Beautiful, disgusting and heart wrenching

Jacob Uno Joensen

What does your typical weekend look like?

My weekends differ greatly, it's either working friday,saturday and sunday at Hotel sanders, bussing tables, earning enough money for the weekends where I don’t have to work. When I’m not working weekends I will often go out for beers with the boys and see where the night takes us.

A regret from your own introweek?

I don’t have any, I had an awesome time with some lovely people!

Why did you go for IBP? I realized how important it is to understand how intertwined politics and business are in the context of our international society. Additionally, I want to live and work abroad and I believe and hope IBP will make this possible.

Jeppe Grønborg Jensen What makes a good day in your opinion?

Gather a bunch of your friends and grab a game of pétanque during the summer at Sønder Boulevard - head to Kihoskh and go to the basement for one of the best selection of beers in Copenhagen after playing What has been your favorite part about IBP so far?

That’s a hard one! But probably how different the courses have been so far - and Galla of course What meal do you make to impress?

Homemade pasta made by hand is always a winner.

Your go-to icebreaker?

Cooking or doing a sport that neither is any good at! All awkwardness goes away when doing something with your hands or having a laugh.

A topic that makes you talk for hours?

Dance, democracy, society’s structural defects, heartbreaks. I tend to talk a lot!

Why did you end up choosing IBP? I was very much in doubt, but IBP seemed like the perfect all-around education, where I, eventually, could figure out my main interests - still waiting for that to happen??

Best spot in Copenhagen?

I would say that Friheden at Nørrebroparken is the best spot. You can watch people skate while having a beer. Copenhagen is filled with hidden pearls, come and ask me and I’ll find the right spot for your mood!

Who is your all time idol/role model?

David Bowie!!!

Favorite drink?

I’m massively into caipirinhas but being a Dane I have a weak spot for any beverage containing alcohol.

Cozy Bar What made you choose IBP? I enjoy business but I've always been fascinated by politics and IBP lets me do both.

What was your biggest surprise moving to Denmark?

Being able to drink in public and just how much Danes drink.

Anne-Louise Ryhl If you could go anywhere - where would you go?

As the daughter of two pilots I have seen many places I would love to go back to, but I would at any time jump on a plane to New York City - the most amazing in the world!

Speed-dating - quick, awkward, and a possible beginning of something great What meal is your masterpiece?

How do you make your busy schedule work?

Having a carefully planned calendar is essential for me. It can sometimes be very confusing to have two jobs alongside your studies if you don't keep an overview. In addition, it works really well for me to synchronize my CBS calendar with my own private calendar so that I can always see when my lectures are, and from there I can plan my hours at work and my private appointments, so that I don't have anything overlapping.

Welcome to Hogwarts! Or at least the second coolest school in the world, Copenhagen Business School. If you are one of the lucky ones that ended up in our magical intro-group, you should prepare yourself to get your Sorting Hat blown away by an unforgettable week accompanied by the coolest tutors the IBP program has to offer. No matter if you identify as a member of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw we are here to welcome all the new wizards and students and give them an amazing study start here at the IBP study program. We are going to have so much fun! So, please bring your brooms and magic wands and join us through this enchanted week!

Greatest element of motivation?

My biggest motivation is to set goals and work hard for the things I want to achieve. You can also set some sub-goals. However, you mustn't lose yourself in the process of achieving your next big goal, it is therefore important to celebrate your victories, whether they are big or small. As long as you do your best, you should be proud of yourself.

Your go-to icebreaker?

It is extremely important when you start studying or meet new people in other social contexts, to break the ice. As a person, I am very extroverted and I feel very comfortable in larger social groups, but I still think it was extremely important to participate in the Intro week, as it can really help break the ice between you and your fellow students.

What is your favorite thing about IBP? Definitely the people and how helpful everyone is.

Watching the Premier League on a Sunday.

Your true food love?

Ladies, gentlemen, aliens, and everything in between fasten your seatbelts, and get ready! We, Christian and Trine, are gonna take y’all back to the future and do our very best to guide you through your next three years from the freshest of freshies, to a stressed secondyear student, and finally the greatest of all graduates! We cannot wait to meet all of you freshies, get to know you, and share a memorable week with y’all; it’s going to be an experience second to none - even time traveling ;)

Trine Curting Sørensen

What made you choose IBP? Over the last couple of years I have considered numerous degrees related to business and politics, and when I found IBP, I knew I had found the perfect match for me, as it contains a little of everything. However, I almost ended up applying to Medical school, so don’t stress about not knowing if IBP is right for you right away.

What’s your best advice in life?

I don’t know if I have any specific life advice in life, but I do my best to live by the quote “This too shall pass”. Take one day at a time, and just enjoy every great moment you get.

Christian Ganer

Favorite meal to eat when hungover?

I always get hangovers second to none, so usually I can’t get anything down. However, my go-to meal is a dürüm with french fries and mayonnaise on the side.

What music do you put on to get a party started?

It depends on the party. However, if MGMT’s “Electric Feel”, Snoop Dogg’s “Signs,” or Edward Maya’s “Stereo Love” does not do the trick, you are probably at the wrong party.

Fashion advice?

I don’t have a lot of advice, but I would often say that less is more. I also think that pants are the most important thing, which is why I have a lot of trouble buying new ones and why I have multiple of the same pair :) Your guilty pleasure?

Sidsel Storm Mogensen

Calling all adventurer-seeking, good-looking, treasurehunting freshies! YOU are beginning one of the most incredible adventures of your life here at CBS - especially at IBP. So make sure to find your jungle hat and boots, dust off your khaki clothes, and grab your whip - we are off for an adventure during the intro week! We, Sidsel and Victor, look forward to meeting all of the freshies, as we’ll be your experienced treasure hunters, guiding your way to the holy grail, the crystal skull, the CBS hallways and life as an IBP student!

Favorite sport?

Ooooh, an easy one! I spend quite some time climbing and I love both the sport itself but also the comfortable environment around it. Actually, these words are currently being formulated by a tired Sidsel after a long day of climbing in the Alps!

Best advice for your new freshies?

My best advice is no doubt that you should remind yourself that everyone else is just as confused, tired and overwhelmed as you! Study start is not easy on anyone and I found that asking for help is the most obvious life hack for ya (plenty of peers and tutors to ask!).

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of you life, what would it be?

Honestly, I just really have this thing for cottage Dream vacation? cheese. Not kidding when I say that I’ve been A couple of weeks at a luxury resort at Maui in eating this with a spoon straight out of the Hawaii during the winter seasons of Denmark (I’ll get container since always really:) restless if I’m on vacation for more than a few weeks).

Describe your perfect partner (platonic)?

My perfect platonic partner is ambitious, determined, honest, direct, loyal, and helpful.

Best study technique tips?

I’m not sure if this is tips, but I haven’t really done anything specific during my first year… My advice would be to follow along and attend the lectures and exercise classes, take some notes if you feel like it, and do your best to actually understand the topics.

This has been my way of doing it - it’s kinda basic, but everything does not have to be so complicated!

Your favorite course during your time at IBP and why?

My favorite course so far has definitely been Financial Accounting or Micro - I like when things can be put into boxes :))) Or Political Science, which is mainly because of the professor <Eddie333.

How are you planning to impress your new freshies?

Well, first of all, I hope you all find this magazine helpful!

Secondly, I don't really want to impress you, but I hope I will be able to help ease your uni start, so please don't hesitate to ask me any questions!

Favorite vacation memory?

That's a tough one. Last summer, I got to walk the Camino Francés with my best friend, and walking 25+ km a day for a month reeaally bonds you in a unique way. But I'm not gonna lie, laying by the poolside with a good book or playing 500 with my bf and family in France this summer has been amazing.

A topic that makes you talk for hours?

I am all about the outdoors. I grew up north of Copenhagen on a small farm bordering the woods, so from a very young age I would spent all my time in the forest, either hunting with my dad or fishing on my own. These are both activities I’ve spent countless of days enjoying and doing since. Hiking and camping in the mountains is a great convo starter as well. Other than that I played basketball for numerous years before my sabaticals, still a sport I like to watch and talk about every now and then.

How to get rid of a hangover fast?

Studying for Macro and Micro. Wrapping your head around that stuff just eases and clears the mind. For those of you who don’t know me very well (being all of ya), thats a joke. Personally, I make myself a hangover cocktail of Elderflower, Faxe and vodka. This is mostly at Roskilde tho. I hardly ever get hangovers elsewhere.

Favorite music artists to put on for the dancefloor?

ABBA! ABBA!! ABBA!!!

Ding ding ding! Are you prepared for 6 rounds in the ring with the formidable IBP bachelor? Not to worry, we’re here to get you in your best fighting shape(preferably to the tune of Eye of the Tiger) by giving you the 1-2s of how to thrive during your time at CBS!

Best advice for your new freshies?

As a freshie, everything is new and exciting, but it is super important to stay true to who you are even though meeting new people and starting a new study can at times be intimidating. Try to be present with the people you are with and participate in social gatherings, though be sure to not stress yourself if you should miss something. It is going to be a super fun, but long week, so make sure to maintain your energy levels!

What would you do on a perfectly chill Sunday?

Brunch with my besties!! Preferably with a boozy champagne start of the day. Enjoying the always sunny summer weather of Denmark in my favorite town of Copenhagen. Later during the day I would grocery shop to make a homemade meal to enjoy with a glass of wine to recharge for the beginning of a new week.

What are your favorite hobbies?

Collecting art and wine, cooking italian dinners and shopping for shoes

3 things to bring to a deserted island?

I would bring rosé, sunscreen, and a copy of War and Peace.

What does your typical weekend look like?

You will either find me serving drinks at PS Bar, or meticulously destroying my economy through questionable investments in shots and junk food on the way home from Sø.

As a foreigner moving to Denmark there are a couple of things that are good to sort out sooner than later, but we will go through them all and much more in our presentation for the new international freshies on monday the 22nd of August at 15.00 - so be there! Anyways here is a little introduction to the essential things to have in place eventually.

The Danish national identification number is called CPR number and gives you the right to health care, voting in municipal elections, is needed to open a bank account, and everything else you can imagine. The process is different depending on if you are a Nordic, EU, or non-EU citizen, but similar to all is that you need to book an appointment at International House (or Borgerservice if you are to reside outside Copenhagen municipality) and bring all your documents after you have applied for a CPR number. An EU-citizen will need to get a EUresidence permit before the above-mentioned CPR appointment, and a non-EU citizen will need a residence permit as well. We will go through the process in more detail during the presentation, but you might be able to start the CPR application now, or just wait until after intro week like most people.

The process of opening a bank account also usually takes a long time because banks will wait for months to answer applications.

Therefore, get started with the second you receive your CPR nr because a CPR nr is necessary to open an account. All you have to do is to fill out an application about what you will use the account for, how much money and how frequently you will have money transfered to it. When you get a bank account your next step is Mobilepay, an essential in danish student life, making it easy to pay your friends, split the bill and most importantly reserve a spot at the infamous IBP Friday bars.
