ABOUT THE CLINICAL PROTEOMICS LABORATORY

The Clinical Proteomics Laboratory is a CAP- and CLIA-accredited facility specializing in advanced proteomics and biomarker research. With a mission to accelerate biomedical innovation, the lab supports the development of early diagnostic tools and personalized treatments for cancer, infectious diseases, and neurodegenerative conditions. While housed within the Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine (CAPMM),the lab operates with a distinct focus on translational science, bridging research and clinical application through validated, regulatory-compliant methods.

ACCELERATING DISCOVERY TO CLINIC

Accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP)and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)ensures the lab adheres to rigorous clinical and regulatory standards. This allows for faster, more reliable translation of research into real-world solutions.Full-service research support is available for academic collaborators, biotech startups, pharmaceutical companies, and government agencies.

OUR TECHNOLOGIES

The Clinical Proteomics Laboratory provides advanced analytical and translational research services, helping partners move biomedical discoveries from bench to bedside.Leveraging state-of-the-art tools and expert support, we offer end-to-end solutions for researchers, clinicians, and industry collaborators aiming to advance precision medicine.

Our team uses patented technologies developed by CAPMM scientists, including:

Reverse Phase Protein Microarray

A powerful multiplex immunoassay that quantifies hundreds of proteins and post-translational modifications from small cell samples

Nanotrap® Technology (Licensed by Ceres Nanosciences, Inc )

A tool that captures and protects rare disease biomarkers directly from blood, urine, and saliva for enhanced analysis

Laser Capture Microdissection

Enables isolation of pure cell populations under microscopic visualization for high-precision studies

OUR CAP-COMPLIANT SERVICES

Advanced biomarker discovery using mass spectrometry and protein microarrays

Biomarker verification and validation

Development of precision diagnostics

Infectious disease testing, immunohistochemistry, and proteomic assays

Support for clinical trial implementation

Experimental design, data, and documentation preparation for FDA submission

SCIENCE IN CAPMM THAT CHANGES LIVES

Advancing Lyme Disease Detection

A novel protein-based urine test was developed at George Mason University for faster, more accurate diagnosis of Lyme disease. In collaboration with Johns Hopkins and Inova, the team is leveraging the Clinical Proteomics Laboratory to identify early biomarkers to support timely treatment and expand detection to other tickborne illnesses.

Advancing Precision Medicine for Cancer Patients

George Mason scientists used cutting-edge technologies including reverse phase protein array and laser capture microdissection to identify protein activation signatures that reveal how patients respond to treatment. In collaboration with leading oncology partners through the I-SPY 2 Trial, the DoD APOLLO Cancer Moonshot Program, Inova Schar Cancer Institute, and the Side-Out Foundation, this work helps drive more personalized and effective cancer therapies.

RESEARCH LEADERSHIP AT CAPMM

Dr. Lance Liotta is Co-Director and Co-Founder of the Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine at George Mason University.Previously,he served as Chief of the Laboratory of Pathology at the National Cancer Institute and Deputy Director of the NIH.He is known for co-inventing Laser Capture Microdissection and developing technologies that have shaped cancer diagnostics and molecular research.

Dr. Emanuel F. Petricoin is Co-Director and Co-Founder of the Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine and a University Professor at George Mason University.Prior to Mason, he served as a Senior Investigator at the FDA, where he co-led the FDA-NCI Clinical Proteomics Program. His work bridges proteomic innovation and clinical application, with a focus on biomarker discovery and therapeutic guidance.
